Ring in the Pantone's Color of the Year!

Happy New Year everyone. I like to generally start out the year exploring new clay colors and mixing up some of the Pantone color recipes. Pantone actually made the news quite a bit last month with so much talk regarding Pantone's Color of the Year for 2026. I am curious what your reaction was?

When I first saw it announced, all I could think of was. "WOW, Are they serious? This must be a joke!" I have been following the Pantone Fashion Colors since around 2006 when someone first introduced it to me. A few years later, I started mixing up the colors using Kato Clay but didn't start posting the recipes on my blog until Fall 2011. Over the years I found each of the season's color palette to be a wonderful mix and provided plenty of inspiration. The past few years, however, I have found them to be less inspiring as many of the colors are repeated over time.

Pantone Spring 2026 Fashion Colors

When I look at this years spring colors I find most of them are a similar tone and seem more like fall than what you would expect for spring or summer.

For instance, here are 3 colors from the above Spring 2026 palette that have been used in previous years in fall and winter palettes. The others are very close variations of previous colors which I will share with you a little bit later.

In my eyes, Pantone pretty much hit bottom with Chocolate Mousse (a fancy word for brown) as the color of the year 2025 and I didn't think they could do worse . . . that is until I saw this years! I actually find the names they use for their colors more inspiring as Cloud Dancer sounds so much better than "white". So is Black going to be for next year?

I apologize if I sound too cynical, in which I am, but I cannot help it. To me, a color of the year should be an actual "Color" that is full of life and vibrant! To me, as someone who also likes to paint, looks at white as not a color but as a "blank canvas" in which to add color.

In the world of polymer clay, it does make a great neutral or contrast in our work. But working with a large white base or background, however, has a huge challenge of keeping it clean and completely lint or blemish free before baking as well as preventing it from discoloration during the baking process.

Later on I will share with you a few tips that I have discovered in working with white clay -- that is unless you have a pet (cat or dog), it might be hopeless, but I do have tips on that as well. So here are a few examples of my work using white in my designs which I will talk more on in my next post.

Merry Christmas from my House to Yours!

Things are quite different for me without my mom this year at Christmas. I was enjoying putting out some of my favorite Christmas decor items but I was totally exhausted afterwards. I was at a point where I was wondering if it was worth the effort to put up my tree but them my sister reminded me of how it could help lift my spirits a bit and I can enjoy it through the season, even if they are not here to enjoy it with me. I am glad I did, even though it took me several days to decorate!

I live in a large condo complex that is age 55+ and very well maintained. We have an active social committee, along with many volunteers, who create various events throughout the year but also look after putting up all the Christmas decorations throughout the building. Our building has a very large dining room and lounge for such events and a caterer comes in to provide special dinners or brunch 2 to 3 times a week.

As of several months ago, I am officially retired from my day job (which was only part time) but now I can totally focus on my health and enjoying life which of course includes working with my clay and other art work. I don't seem to be able to accomplish as much in a day like I use to but I am now learning more how to enjoy the "journey" instead of always looking towards the "destination". I think that makes a great New Year's resolution, doesn't it?

So I just want to wish you all a very restful and Merry Christmas! -- I will be back again soon with some more updates.

New Travel Jewelry Pouches

Ever since the creation of my Snap Decisions! Jewelry collection, I have been on the look-out for the best ways to organize my own jewelry at home and also for travel. For organizing at home I decided to update my walk-in closet with a section just for my jewelry and accessories. This was fun to do and I am still tinkering as I add more pieces. I organize most of my items by color so it is quick and easy to match what I am going to wear.

For travel, items are organized a bit differently and of course it depends if it is a short trip where I would only use a carry-on bag or if I will be away for a longer time and need more clothes and travel bags.

Here are the last five clay recipes for the 2025 Pantone Fall/Winter Fashion Colors. I hope you find them inspiring and a great way to kick start your creativity. With all the noise going on around us these days, it helps to distract oneself with some form of craft. I have always found that working with polymer clay can be very calming. More Fall 2025 Pantone Fashion Color Recipes

I am not sure how many of you out there have ever heard of Color Draping? It was very popular back in the 1980's and 1990's. I remember going to home "parties" where they determine your "seasonal" colors and then you purchase color swatches in those colors for color matching while shopping for clothes. We were told that if someone compliments your outfit (but not yourself) then they are saying the outfit is nice but not necessarily in your proper seasonal color, otherwise they would tell you how nice "you" look (in that outfit). I found it quite interesting and even though I somehow lost my color swatches a while back, I still remember that I was told I am a "Vivid Summer". These are examples of the seasonal colors today and I noticed that the colors are somewhat similar but the titles have changed.

I had discovered that when I wear the colors from my palette, people always notice it and tell me how "that color really looks good on you" so it does make a difference. I think that was what first really introduced me to color palettes or variations. I use to paint, but never really developed a true love for mixing and combining color until I discovered polymer clay. To me, polymer clay became the "3-D" version of color!

The other thing I noticed about this years fall/winter colors is that most of them have a red or brown tone or undertone which is a little unusual for the typical Pantone seasonal palettes.

So even if you are someone who likes to make jewelry (either for yourself or to sell) or someone who likes to wear jewelry or other accessories, these can be in colors to compliment the clothes in your own wardrobe as an accent but does not necessarily have to be so "matchy".

I like making my clay tiles as they are great for matching items while shopping or looking for various combinations. I have these listed in my online store (made to order) and will be available when my shipping issues are resolved (hopefully this week).

Mocha Mousse - Pantone Color of the Year

I have been busy setting up a business account with several couriers to replace Canada Post. If and when Canada Post starts functioning again, I will still have those other shipping options available. I find dealing with these companies are a little more complicated than the postal system so hopefully I will have it running smoothly very soon.

In the meantime, I had finished and delivered the fall order to Kelowna Yarn & Needlecrafts in time for their anniversary sale which was over a week ago. They sell a lot of yarn for baby and children's items and so my small buttons are quite popular. My best seller is the simply textured Rainbow buttons which I make in "all the colors of the rainbow" including the Pantone colors.

I now expanded these Rainbow buttons into little heart shapes which are also now available at the Kelowna Yarn store.

I also make custom stitch markers that are based on their store logo (shown below).

This is a hint on how they are created. I first make a large cane and then reduce it smaller to the size I need. Then each "yarn ball" is created by sandwiching a bit of clay filler in between two slices of the cane.

Each year for their anniversary I create stitch markers in the Pantone Color for the Year so the batch I made up here is in Mocha Mousse.

Since I mixed up the Pantone clay colors for this fall (using Kato clay) I thought I would share them here one final time. I have been slowly using up the large supply of Kato clay I still have and now even if I wanted to, I wouldn't be able to purchase any more soon as Donna Kato just announced that Van Aken International is clearing out all their stock and will no longer manufacture it. So in the future, any new colors created with be using Cernit clay. If you do use other clays that are in the true artisan colors (Fimo professional or Cernit No. One) you can improvise and still mix up these colors. When I get the chance, I will add the converted Cernit recipes here later.

I was Down But Not Out

Hi again. I don't know where the time has gone these past 6 months but I will give you a quick update before I get into the new stuff:

As I have shared before, back in January 2020 my dad sadly passed away. When Covid hit very shortly after, I brought my mom out to Chase, BC to stay with me. We decided to make it permanent and so the two of us moved together in a new condo in Kelowna. My plan was to take care of her until the end and avoid her having to go to a care home. She had 2 leaking heart valves and one valve occluded (due to the pressure caused from the leak) so her heart was only functioning at 25%.

So mom's mind was very good and I enjoyed our time together including our talks about family history, etc. Sadly, on May 29th, my mom passed away and she will be missed so much. Our family had a beautiful memorial service for her in Alberta and her ashes along with dad's ashes were buried together.

While in Alberta, I stayed a bit for my nephew's wedding and visiting family and friends whom I hadn't seen in awhile. Between all of this I have been learning to deal with my new "normal" -- Fibromyalgia. I didn't realize how many of my health problems were all related to this one diagnosis. Fortunately I have several wonderful doctors (family GP, Neurologist, Gastroenterologist and doctors at the Pain Clinic) who are working with me to improve my situation as much as possible. I have to say there has been quite a bit of improvement in the past few months -- and as long as I can pace myself and not push too hard, it should be a bit more manageable.

So to add more misery to my life (any many others who are affected), the wonderful orange guy from south of the border has inflicted our country, along with the rest of the world, tariffs on anything shipped to the US. The tariffs are 35% on top of what is purchased. We also have to pay an extra 10% to the company that would be collecting the tariffs plus an extra charge of $2/package to Canada post. I refuse to pay these extremely high taxes/charges and I cannot see anyone wanting to pay that as an extra fee to their order so, sadly I have decided to suspend any orders shipped to the United States.

Then to beat us up even more . . . the Canadian Postal Workers decided to go on strike .. Again! Yes this is the same strike that disrupted our deliveries for last Christmas. It was suspended but not resolved and so here we go again!

In the meantime, my tutorial/lessons do not require physical shipping as they are PDF files that are sent directly to your e-mail address that is provided when purchased. And right now I have a 30% off sale which will run until Tuesday, September 30th.

So I have been able to do a bit of claying over this time to fill some store orders. I will share some of that in my next post. While working on an order for Kelowna Yarn & Needlecrafts (here in Kelowna), I managed to mix up the Pantone colors for this Fall/Winter using the Kato Clay so I am planning on sharing those here if any of you are still interested.

A Total Blackout so Make Hay While the Sun Shines!

Happy New Year to everyone! I was quite surprised to discover that almost a year has gone by since I last posted! This has been quite the year with so many ups and downs for myself and my mom (who lives with me and I take care of). She is now considered palliative as her heart continues to fail more each day. We are still thankful for another year together and didn't think she would see her 91st birthday which we just celebrated this past week.

My own health has been slowly deteriorating for quite a few years with this past year being the worst. After being referred to several specialists, a surgery (which led to the discovery of my sleep apnea) and lots of x-rays, scans, ultrasound and finally an MRI that finally led to my diagnosis of Fibromyalgia. I am still going through a lot of emotions trying to process this news. I have learned there is no cure but just finding ways to manage the pain in which I am currently waiting for a consult with a local pain clinic.

All I do know, for me right now, is that I will have to accept the fact that my life has slowed down a fair bit but I refuse to have it come to a grinding halt. I have heard my parents and grandparents use the phrase "Make hay while the sun shines!" but now I understand the meaning. I have good days and bad days that are total write-offs. I have also learned that if something important needs to be done, leave it until a little later in the afternoon or evening when I am feeling a bit more normal. I do have orders to fill that I need to work on so I have learned to take more advantage of the good days or times when I am struggling less.

So during those "good" days, I managed to fill a recent button order for Kelowna Yarn & Needlecrafts store. They have a rich texture in jewel-tone colors. Thank goodness for my Dream Machine (a huge oversize pasta-like machine) with a motor to help with my creating, as my hands would not be able to do this without it.

The colors are created using various mica powders or colored pigments. I share lots of tips in several of my tutorials on how to work with these powders and achieve certain colors. (Click on photo below for link).

I use a lot of black clay for the background, which helps makes the jewel-tone colors pop. As I am using up most of my Kato clay (and in the process of changing to another clay brand), I realized I was running out of black. I had heard about the new "Black-out" clay the Kato brand came out with and so decided to order some to try out. With this Black-out clay, one is suppose to be able to tint any scrap clay into black.

I have to say that this stuff is so amazing and a real game changer!!! I have plenty of scrap but an abundance of "mud" or brown. I generally use this color as bead filler but one can only use so much of it. You can see in the above photo the black clay on the left was created from the same brown clay on the right -- and I only used maybe 1/10 of the blackout for mixing. It not only tints the clay but also makes a wonderful conditioner. The brown was a little on the dry side but really soft and pliable after tinting.

I create a lot of items using this coloring textured technique such as our interchangeable jewelry snaps and buttons for sewing or knitting. The stores we sell to have samples like these that are all numbered. This way they can match the color samples with their fabric, or yarn to make it easier for ordering. It also allows them to be creative as well in selecting the texture with the color to suit their project.

The bags shown above and below, for instance, are examples of the kits created by Fibre Expressions, a quilt shop in the Sunshine Coast of BC. They put together amazing quilted bag kits which include one of our coordinating buttons.

The Future is Clear!

Happy new years everyone! I have something exciting I recently discovered that I realized I had not shared here yet so figured now is a good time.

I see so many asking the question "what sealer works best on polymer clay?" But does polymer clay really require "sealing"? My answer: "No it does not". A lot of my creations have no "sealing agent or glaze" and even years later they still look good as new. If I want a high shine, I prefer to sand and then buff with my Dremel tool. I especially love how it feels when I touch it with my hands. You can read more info on this if you click on the tab at the top of this blog "Polymer Clay Tips". Here is a video of my past hubby/claymate buffing a piece with the Dremel tool. I have the buffing pads I make myself listed in my online store here. (right now on sale until the end of the month).

I also create pieces that I cannot sand or buff and DO require a sealing agent or glaze. This is when I add coloring agents to the outside of my piece such as mica powders, inks or pan pastels as in the textured tube beads shown in the photo below -- my tutorial for this is here. If the coloring materials are not sealed, they can eventually wear off over time.

To Glaze or Not to Glaze . . .

I wrote a blog post quite a few years ago on glazing your work (in 2010) and realized it needed an update. So many products are constantly changing and have even been discontinued over the years. It seems I just find a product I like and then it suddenly isn't available any more! I am constantly in search of a better product -- not just something better to work with but that gives excellent results and is also safer for the environment.

One of the products I have been using for many years to seal my work (that has coloring agents which require sealing) is, believe it or not, "Future Acrylic Floor Finish". I know many who have been working with polymer clay over the years are aware of this trade "secret". Some, like myself, still use it today. Many "newbies" are not aware of it, or when they see a photo or a reference to it, they are confused. This is a product that was introduced into the market as far back as in the 1960's. The bottle pictured above is of the original vintage bottle. Over the years, the label had changed many times and was later purchased by Johnson & Johnson, thus eventually becoming "Pledge with Future" and then lastly, "Pledge Revive".

So now, Johnson & Johnson discontinued their latest product and sadly, is no longer available.

Or is it?????

Well, introducing . . . . drum roll . . . . Quick Shine!

It is by a different company but very much the same as the original "Future Floor Finish". I have been testing it out to see how it compares and so far, it is pretty darn close --- other than the smell. I really didn't mind the smell of the original Future (had somewhat of a fruity odor) but this one is not as strong and slightly different, yet not objectionable -- at least not to me.

I should mention I also like to use the other glazes made for polymer clay such as the Cernit brand -- which comes in a matte finish besides glossy. I find they are far better to use than a typical varathane. But when working with mica powders, I still prefer to use the acrylic floor finish (now Quick Shine) for the following reasons:

# 1 - Safer for the environment and our health! Just compare the labels. Quick Shine has the "Safer Choice" seal and all you have to do is look at those danger warning signs on the Varathane.

# 2 - Quick Shine has just as hard a finish as the varathane, and maybe even tougher. After all, it is made to be used on floors which can take quite a beating.

# 3 - Cleans up easy off your hands, etc. with soap and water.

# 4 - Cost! Quick Shine is by far way cheaper than the varathane plus the bottle size is larger as well and keeps for a very long time.

So where can you get it? I bought mine in a hardware store in the floor care section. You can google it to find what stores sell it in your area. I did see it on Amazon but at double the price but if you cannot find it elsewhere, then that can always be a back-up plan.

And here are a few quick tips for working with the Quick Shine (or Future if you still have some hanging around like I do):

Pour some Quick Shine into a small clean jar (not too much as you can top it up as needed). This way when you are done you can tightly seal the jar to use next time. Over time, the Quick shine can start to thicken. If it does (reason for not too much at a time in your jar), take some paper towel to sop it up and wipe the jar out. Discard the paper towel in the garbage and add some fresh product into your jar.

When applying it to your piece, use a dry, soft, clean, brush. Apply a thin, light coat to your piece. Allow to dry and then apply a second or third coat if necessary. It is better to do several thin coats than one thick one to prevent streaking, etc. It will also make the finish more durable. Wash your brush out with soap and water before it dries and hardens.

After your pieces have dried, they can be "heat-set" by baking again but this time at a much lower temperature (200 F or 100 C) for 15-20 minutes. Also be sure to place the pieces in a pan that has a cover or tightly cover with tin foil to prevent any fumes from escaping (just in case).

So lastly, if you prefer, you can always use other glazes that are created just for polymer clay such as Sculpey or Cernit. I quite like the Cernit glaze and like how it also comes in a matte finish besides glossy. These both also recommend "heat-setting" which makes them more durable. I haven't used them for sealing mica powders as of yet but have another special use which I will share with you in another post later sometime.

I don't go out to the movies anymore since I lost my "Claymate" and hubby Dave. I prefer now to wait until I can watch the latest films from the comfort and convenience of my own home. Not that I don't miss going out. I do very much and our favorite way of celebrating our Anniversary was dinner and a movie. I have seen so many trailers for the latest Barbie movie and I have to say, it looks like a whole lot of fun. I hope to see it sometime soon, but, in the meantime, I notice a lot of people have been into the color Pink -- specifically pinks that "Barbie" would wear.

So I decided to research the color and see what the Pantone Color Institute had to offer. I also checked to see if there were other color matches for the Pantone 219 C and my Pantone Connect app came up with 3 close matches -- all of which I have shared my color recipes previously, on this blog.

To make things easier for you, I will provide you the links to these colors here (click on the color name below) so you can mix up some fun "Barbie" pinks in time for the Christmas season! So here goes:

The color Beetroot Purple was one of the spring colors for this year. A close match to this shade was Pink Yarrow. If you click on the name you will see the post I wrote on it.

So any of these three magenta pinks can work really well if you would like to create some vivid "Barbie Pinks". I hope you have some fun with it!

Snowflakes . . . in a Snap!

Introducing the new Revised Edition and Sale

I am happy to announce I finally finished the revised edition to my Clay Color System tutorial. My original tutorial was first published 12 years ago (2011). It is my own concept that I had been using for several years before that.

My original Color System tutorial was first based on Kato clay. At that time, it was the only brand that was made in the true artist colors. Previous to that, Premo (Sculpey brand) also had the true artist colors, but made the huge mistake of discontinuing them. This created quite an uproar within the polymer clay artist community, so Sculpey decided to put back some of the colors into circulation -- but only the three primary colors -- Red, Yellow and Blue. When the Sculpey company did this, a lot of clay artists jumped ship and switched to Kato clay.

While I personally like working with Kato clay, many artists find it difficult to condition (it is very hard/firm) and many have issues with the smell. For me, it had become more difficult to obtain here in Canada as the shipping charges and extra import fees are horrendous. And in the last few years, other clay brands that are made in the true artist colors have become more widely available, like Cernit (Number One series) and Fimo Professional (Not Fimo soft).

I have tried Fimo Professional and find it quite nice to work with, however it does have it's issues. For instance I like to make impressions in my clay which requires a mold release. I generally prefer to use water instead of cornstarch. Fimo clay reacts to water and becomes sticky and gummy. If you would like to apply any type of powders to your textured clay, after using cornstarch as a mold release, any colored powders will not stick.

Since a year ago, I started experimenting with the Cernit brand clay and discovered how much I like it. Not only are the colors true (Number One series) and vibrant, it is soft enough to work with without being too soft or sticky. I also have all the colors in the Metallic, Pearl and Translucent. Other than the Number One series, I love the Metallic the most. The colors are just so scrumptious! I am also intrigued with the Translucent as I have seen some amazing faux glass pieces created by other artists.

So in my last blog post, I announced that the Pantone color recipes would be the last I would be sharing with you here as I will be no longer using Kato clay. You might be wondering about what will be next. Any future recipes will be available in my online store and I will be sharing here inspiration on using those new colors.

The new Revised Edition of my Clay Color System was revamped to work with other brand clays besides Kato. It does not have all the extra color recipes provided in my Original Clay Color System that uses Kato clay but these recipes can be purchased separately or as an extra bonus. Many of these recipes are used as base colors to create the Pantone color recipes provided on this blog (see the link at the top of this page). This means you can still create the older color recipes provided here using other clay brands besides Kato, but the end results might not be the same.

Pantone Fall 2023 Fashion Colors Persian Jewel, Tender Peach & Doe

I will be sharing the clay recipes for the last three Pantone Fall 2023 fashion colors, Persian Jewel, Tender Peach and Doe. Doe is a actually one of the Classic Neutrals that I decided to include.

Persian Jewel is a gorgeous blue with a hint of violet yet slightly muted. Pantone says it is inspired by the precious stone, lapis lazuli. I really love this color and find it to be very calming. I would love to have a top or outfit in this color but might just settle for some new clay jewelry instead!

Tender Peach is a soft yet peachy beige with a slight pink flesh undertone. I think it would combine well with the Persian Jewel or even the Burnt Sienna. I will have to experiment and see.

Doe is a soft brown with a rich gold undertone and perfect for fall. It definitely is a great Classic Neutral and thinking animal prints.

Pantone Fall 2023 Fashion Colors Carnival Glass, Kohlrabi, and High Visibility

The Pantone Fall 2023 fashion colors include two shades of green -- one is a mint and the other a more yellow green.

Carnival Glass is the minty shade of green and does have, as Pantone describes, an icy appearance. While this shade of green is particularly not my favorite, it could look nice when combined with another color such as navy blue. I will have to experiment and see what I can come up with.

Kohlrabi is a warmer green and while similar to the brighter color, Love Bird, from this year's spring collection, it is slightly muted with a gold undertone. This is my favorite shade of green that I always tend to be drawn to and can't seem to resist.

High Visibility is a very close match to Empire Yellow, which was also one of this year's spring palette. It is also very similar to the yellow, Meadowlark, used in the Spring 2018 Pantone collection. There might be a slight difference between each of these yellows, but it is so slight, one can hardly notice. It is also on Pantone's list for a "close match" so this is why I chose to use the same color recipe again for this fall.

The only items I have made with the Pantone Fall colors for this year so far are a few of my little textured buttons. Here are some in the High Visibility (Meadowlark) and Kohlrabi. These, along with a wide assortment of other colors are available at the Kelowna Yarn & Needlecrafts store.

So here are the recipes for these three colors using Kato clay:

Pantone Fall 2023 Fashion Colors Red Dahlia, Red Orange, Burnt Sienna & Rose Violet

While most of the Pantone Fall Fashion colors for 2023-2024 tend to be somewhat bright they all still have slight earthy undertones.

Besides Viva Magenta, there are 4 other colors in the red or magenta specter. I will share the clay recipes for these with you today.

Red Dahlia is a rich wine red and is a very close match to the Pantone Fall 2019 color Chili Pepper so I am using the exact same recipe again. This clay color may appear light after mixing but you will find it to become darker after it is baked. That is one of things I noticed with using Kato Brand Clay, especially when working with red, magenta and sometimes violet if added as an ingredient. I have learned to make an allowance for this when mixing my colors. I am currently working out some of these recipes with other clay brands, particularly Cernit, to see if I get the same results.

Red Orange is not exactly as it sounds. It is in fact a more orange shade of red as compared to the swatch shown on a computer screen.

Burnt Sienna is an earthy rust red that reminds me of autumn leaves.

Rose Violet was a Pantone Fashion color from last year - Fall 2022 - 2023. It is gorgeous fuchsia and combines quite nicely with this years fall palette.

Wow! Another fall is here, but with all the raging wildfires that surrounded us this past summer, I must say I am looking forward to cooler weather. I did manage to work out the Pantone fall colors a while ago but didn't get a chance to post here yet as I was busy filling orders. I am still dealing with some health issues so I do not get as much done in a day (or week) as I would like, but I am happy if I can at least get a few things accomplished.

Pantone Spring 2023 Fashion Colors - Final Clay Recipes

The final five Pantone Spring 2023 Fashion Color recipes that I will be sharing are Blue Perennial, Summer Song, Skylight, Macchiato and Gray Lilac - shown from left to right in the samples below.

The illustration below shows where these colors are located on the color wheel. You can see where Macchiato is a mix of orange and green (half way between - more or less), thus creating a shade of brown. It is also on the opposite side of the color wheel to the two blue colors making them "complimentary". Complimentary colors generally make a good contrast to each other and can also look good together.

Here are a few other illustrations combining these same five colors to see how they look on various color backgrounds and also as a gradient blend.

I like to play with my Pantone app and create various color palettes to see how they look together.

I should mention that the Pantone color Skylight is a lighter version of the Pantone Spring 2022 color Blue Harbor. Since it takes a fair amount of white to lighten, it is much easier to use a small amount of the Blue Harbor as the base rather than mixing the Skylight color from scratch. If you already follow my Clay Color System and saved any left over clay in the color Harbor Blue, you already know how convenient this method is. That is why my Color System tutorial is more than just color recipes. It is a simple easy to understand way to mix and combine color but also how to organize your recipes and your clay colors that are mixed.

The Pantone Spring color Tangelo is next on the color wheel following the reds and peaches I shared yesterday. I should have included it as well since it combines and blends best with those shades.

Shown below are the next five Pantone spring colors going around the color wheel. Starting from the top, and working to the right are the following colors in order: Tangelo, Empire Yellow, Leek Green (behind Empire Yellow), Love Bird & Classic Green.

Gradient Blend

I really like the color blend combination of the orange yellow and greens -- you just have to be careful when combining or blending the orange next to green as they are both "secondary" colors and when combined they become a "mud" color-- or in other words, brown. That is why having a yellow in between works as a sort of "bridge" and prevents the mud effect. I explain a lot of these color mixing rules and tips in my Clay Color System.

So here are the recipes for these five colors using Kato clay. Again, two of the colors are a very close match to previous Pantone colors and I have provided a link to those original recipes.

Pantone Spring 2023 Fashion Colors - From Magenta to Red to Peach

The five colors, Fiery Red, Beetroot Purple, Peach Pink, Crystal Rose & Vanilla Cream are all close to each other on the color wheel. They range from a magenta to red to a peachy pink. The color wheel diagram below shows where they are actually located and how close they are to each other.

In fact, the color wheel below shows where Viva Magenta (Pantone Color of the Year 2023) fits in, which is right between Beetroot Purple (far left) and Fiery Red.

I have the Pantone Connect app which is a lot of fun to play with. You can create your own color palettes and see how the colors go together. Here are a few examples using these five colors:

Another feature with this app is that you can cross match Pantone colors and find other colors that are a close match. I have so many clay color recipes in my "library collection" and if a new Pantone color is a close match to one I already have, I will prefer to just stay with that color instead of tweaking it ever so slightly. It makes life in the studio a whole lot easier! One example of this is the new Spring 2023 color, Beetroot purple, is a close match to a previous Pantone color from Spring 2017 called Pink Yarrow.

Another close match to the Pantone color, Crystal Rose, is Gossamer Pink which was one of the Pantone Spring colors from last year.

The Pantone color, Peach Pink was the exact same color used in the Pantone Fall 2019 palette. Creme De Peche was another color used in the same Pantone Palette and is a close match to this year's spring color, Vanilla Cream.

And lastly, if you have my Clay Color System tutorial, then you already have the clay recipe for Fiery Red. It is a very close match to Cadmium Red, recipe # 4-2.

Viva Magenta! Pantone Color of the Year 2023

I am finally back and must apologize for the long delay. I have had many things to deal with lately which I will be able to share eventually but not now. In the meantime, I have just finally begun to mix up some of the new Pantone Spring Fashion colors for this year.

Pantone announced their color of the year for 2023. It is called Viva Magenta!

I have been seeing a lot of facebook posts regarding this new color. Some show it as an almost true magenta where some have even shared it as a plum or purple.

So is this color really a shade of magenta? Or is it more a deeper red?

Leatrice Eiseman, Executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, explains how they "drew inspiration from nature and what is real. Pantone, Viva Magenta, descends from the Red family and is inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known.

Cochineal is one of the most important insect dyes and you can read more about it here. And this is another interesting article on its' history: The Bug That Had the World Seeing Red

The dye it produces is a deep rich shade of red. By adding various other ingredients, however, it can change to shades of pink, purple and even orange. I have found that the Pantone color, Viva Magenta is a combination of both red and magenta. That is why it is so difficult to determine on which side of the scale it really is.

As I mixed up the clay color to match my Pantone Swatch, I suddenly realized that this color looked awfully familiar! I grabbed my samples and ran to my kitchen to discover why I had recognized it. It was a dear ringer match for the color on the walls I had painted! You can see my blog post here on the renovations I did.

I love this warm color and how it makes me feel whenever I am in the kitchen. I was looking for the paint color number but couldn't find the paint chip sample. I used a Behr paint in a satin finish (recommended for kitchens). When I find the color chip number I will add it here.

I haven't had time to create anything with my polymer clay version yet but should later on -- after I mix up the spring colors. So here is the recipe using Kato clay:

1/8 part Kato Black

As you can see it is a very simple recipe that makes such a rich and exotic color! I will be back shortly with more of my clay recipes for the spring colors.

A new year has already started and I am so ready to put 2022 behind me! But it seems the cycle never ends and January means back to end of year bookkeeping, taking inventory and such.
