After a week of cold and some days of boring rain we finally got the promised snow. The photo above is taken half an hour ago while the one below is taken just right now. (It's 12.15 now). No weather for cats apparently.

Na een week van kou en een paar dagen saaie regen kregen we uiteindelijk de beloofde sneeuw. De foto bovenaan is een half uur geleden gemaakt en de tweede foto is net een paar minuutjes jong. (Het is nu 15 over 12). Kennelijk geen weer voor katten.

Undelivered and unopened mail up to 18 months was recently found in and near the house of a Yorkshire postman. The mail should have been delivered in a few places and amongst them was the place we live. During the last 18 months we did receive mail, so 'the damage' for us personally was not too big.
We were really delighted to finally receive some Christmas mail and so was Dave who already sent his christmas present for a second time :)). His mail (and other mail) took about 2.5 months to arrive. Here is the last article about this bizarre story.

Onlangs werd niet-bezorgde en ongeopende post, tot zo'n 18 maanden oud, gevonden in en nabij het huis van een Yorkshire postbode. De post moest werden bezorgd in een paar plaatsen waaronder die waar wij wonen. Gedurende de laatste 18 maanden kregen wij wel post dus 'de schade' was voor ons persoonlijk niet zo groot.
We waren echt opgetogen nog wat kerstpost te krijgen, net zoals Dave die ons zijn kerstgeschenk al voor een tweede keer verzonden had :)). Zijn mail (en van anderen) deed er zo'n 2,5 maand over om aan te komen. Hier staat het laatste artikel over dit bizar verhaal.

Walenpleintje Amsterdam

One of the things I brought with me from Holland is this drawing, once bought by Gerrit in a second hand shop. It's a pen drawing by P. Elzinga, dated 27 February 1950 and it shows Het Walenpleintje in Amsterdam. I think it's one of the nicer Dutch things over here in our Yorkshire house.

Een van de dingen die ik meenam uit Nederland is deze tekening, ooit gekocht door Gerrit in een tweedehandse winkel. Het is een pentekening van P. Elzinga, gedateerd op 27 februari 1950 en het toont Het Walenpleintje in Amsterdam. Ik vind dit een van de mooiere Nederlandse spullen die we hier in ons Yorkshire huis hebben.

Due to several different things I haven't been able to post blogs for a while. At the moment it doesn't look like the situation will be changing for a while. However, I will be back soon, hopefully in a week so please, call here from time to time.

Vanwege verschillende zaken was ik gedurende de laatste tijd niet in de gelegenheid iets te schrijven hier. Momenteel ziet het er ook niet naar uit dat daar spoedig verandering in zal komen. Ik verwacht echter wel gauw, misschien met een weekje, weer hier terug te zijn, kom dus a.u.b. even aan van tijd tot tijd.
Ondertussen: bovenstaande foto is vanmorgen genomen. We hebben weer een felle winterzon aan een gladblauwe hemel. Fijn weekend en tot gauw. :))

Building ....

Like in Deventer NL (and many other places of course) Sheffield's in the middle of big changes. Many roads are narrowed due to street force and cranes are seen everywhere, even close to our house where a new medical centre will be built. The building on the photo, in Sheffields centre, is in the middle of rebuilding as well. The historical front is saved but everything behind will be renewed. I heard rumours that Borders, a big bookshop, would come in here. As a book lover I hope it's true but time will show.

Burning gorse

A few days ago gorse burning took place on the hills behind our house. This burning takes place in the winter months and is essential for mountain management so the spring grass and plants can grow better. Burning gorse is timed as there are no nesting birds at this time of year. Because of the oils the fires can easily be big and hazardous so the local fire brigade is informed beforehand. Indeed the fire brigade came later to see if the fire had stopped properly.
In the Bach Flower Therapy Gorse is used as a remedy when one feels without any hope.

Piggy

This is the Piggy Bank I made in the pottery Class. Instead of a coin slot, I made a little lid so I won't have to break the pig when it's full with money (keep dreaming, Astrid... ) On the second picture you can see a little bit how it's made. First there is the shaped pig, still in fresh clay. After the first firing I glaced it. The colours are now still very vague but after the second firing the colours came out shiny and intense. Just how I hoped it would be.

Dit is het spaarvarkentje dat ik op de Pottenbakken-cursus maakte. In plaats van een muntgleufje maakte ik een klein dekseltje zodat ik het dier niet hoeft te breken als het vol geld is (blijf maar lekker dromen, Astrid...). Op de tweede foto zie je een een beetje hoe het gemaakt is. Allereeerst is er het gevormde varkentje, nog in verse klei. Na het bakken glazuurde ik het. De kleuren zijn nu nog erg vaag maar na de tweede keer te zijn gebakken, kwamen de kleuren er glimmend en intens uit, precies zoals ik hoopte.

Why is this little read bear laughing when there's a smelly green & orange mandarin sticking to its feet? I will never understand bears.

Hoe komt het dat dit rood beertje lacht terwijl er een stinkende groen en oranje mandarijn aan zijn pootje bengelt? Beren, ik zal ze nooit begrijpen.

Amaryllus

We got this Amaryllus as a Christmas present and the bulb grew up very fast. Within a month the stem was about 80 cm (32 inch) and then, within two weeks, it had five beautiful giant flowers!

We kregen deze Amaryllus als een Kerstgeschenk en de bol groeide erg snel. Binnen een maand was de steel ongeveer 80 cm en binnen de twee daaropvolgende weken waren er vijf prachtige reusachtige bloemen te bewonderen!

Low water level

No, I was not far away but there was no time to write on my weblog. I did a few short courses and there was little spare time left. Time that I spent lying on the settee, looking at television, or having a lie in. I'll start to talk about a few things that had my interest during the last time. First the reservoirs in and around Sheffield. The waterlevel is so low that people start worrying. Apparently there was too little rain. Some people talked about the dry time in 1996 when drinkingwater had to be imported. Let's see what will turn out this year.

Nee, ik was niet ver weg maar ik had geen tijd om op m'n weblog te schrijven. Ik deed een paar kleine cursussen en er was weinig tijd over. Tijd die ik liggend op de bank doorbracht terwijl ik tv keek of die ik gebruikte om lekker uit te slapen. Ik wil nu een paar onderwerpen aanstippen die de laatste tijd m'n aandacht hadden. Allereerst de reservoirs in en rondom Sheffield. Het waterniveau is zo laag dat sommigen zich zorgen beginnen te maken. Het heeft blijkbaar te weinig geregend. Sommigen noemden 1996 toen drinkwater moest worden geimporteerd. We zullen wel zien hoe het dit jaar uitpakt.

Mandarijn & haar huisje

Mandarijn goes crackers with her newest toys: a foldable lightweight storage bag and a sweater dryer of the same material (I'm sure you know this kind of stuff). You can buy them in a 99p-shop and when I came home with the sweater dryer and made it ready to use, Mandarijn confiscated it straight away. Therefore I bought her later the bag as well. I made a 'door' at one side of the bottom and between the two compartments. She plays with it and sleeps in it many times a day. Kibbeling is curious but prefers to look at it from a distance.

Mandarijn is helemaal gek met haar nieuwste speelgoed: een uitklapbare lichtgewicht rommeltas en een truitjes-droger van hetzelfde materiaal (ik weet zeker dat je deze spulletjes kent). Je kunt ze in een 99-pence winkel kopen. Toen ik thuiskwam met de truitjes-droger en het gebruiksklaar maakte, werd 't meteen door Mandarijn geconfisceerd. Daarom heb ik haar later ook maar die tas gekocht en een 'deurtje' gemaakt in een helft van de bodem en in het tussenschot. Een paar keer per dag speelt zij er mee en zij slaapt er ook nog in. Kibbeling is nieuwsgierig maar geeft er de voorkeur aan om er van een afstandje naar te kijken.

Soms speel ik zomaar een beetje op de computer en dank zij deze gratis plug-ins kon ik deze plaatjes maken van onze straat. Leuk effect he?

Finally, after a few weeks of searching, I succeeded to buy fresh dill again. That means that I at last can make the Polish tomato and pepper salad Gerrit gave me the recipe for.
If you have a favourite recipe too, and you want it to be placed on my recipe site, please don't hestitate and send me an email so we can 'talk' about it. The chance is big that your recipe will be published in English and Dutch.

Eindelijk, na een paar weken zoeken, lukte het me weer eens om verse dille te kopen. Dat betekent dat ik eindelijk de Poolse tomaat en paprikasalade kan maken waarvan Gerrit me het recept gaf.
Als u ook een favoriet recept hebt die u graag op m'n receptensite geplaatst wilt zien, aarzel dan niet en stuur me een e-mail zodat we erover kunnen 'praten'. Grote kans dat uw recept in het Engels en het Nederlands wordt geplaatst.

Sheffield Ski-Village

Did I ever tell you about the Ski-village in Sheffield? It's there where the white track is on the hill in the background. For the ones who have seen the film The Full Monty I can tell that the part where one of the blokes wanted to gas himself in the car, was taken on that hill.

Heb ik je weleens verteld over het Ski-dorp in Sheffield? Het is daar waar je die witte baan op de heuvel in de achtergrond ziet. Degenen die de film The Full Monty hebben gezien, kan ik zeggen dat de scene waar die ene man zichzelf wilde vergassen in de auto, daar op die heuvel is geschoten.

Grey day today

Could weather be more depressing? It's grey, foggy, cold and damp. Snow was expected but this came instead. Of course I'm glad there is no snow and no slippery roads but the only thing I'd like to do now is crawl against the heater with a mug of hot chocolate within arm's reach. Melted Belgian chocolate stirred in hot milk ... mmm

Kan het weer nog depressiever zijn? Het is grijs, mistig, koud en wat nattig. Er werd sneeuw verwacht maar dit was wat er kwam. Natuurlijk ben ik blij dat er geen sneeuw ligt en dat de wegen niet glad zijn, maar het liefste zou ik nu tegen de verwarming aan willen kruipen met een mok hete chocolade binnen handbereik. Gesmolten Belgische chocolade in hete melk geroerd ... mmm

Haggis & Happy New Year!

Haggis with tatties and neaps (with potatoes and turnips) was our first meal in 2006. It tasted gorgeous despite all different stories about it! Both Michael and I enjoyed it a lot although Michael had to disguise the taste of the neaps with gravy. It all started last midnight, when 2006 just began, when we were unexpectedly invited to the New Year's Celebration at the local Rugby Union Club. We thought that would be great, so off we went to their homebase. As soon as we were in the building, we were coaxed to get some Haggis. I felt great as I've always wanted to eat this traditional Scottish food, and all of a sudden it was there, on a plate, in front of me. There was music and a joyous atmosphere (with a Scottish touch, hence the Haggis) which passed the time along nicely. In the evening there was another food surprise, a great buffet! All who wanted, could stuff themselves full with gorgeous things such as meats, fish, game and quiches. As I said, we met a lot of new people in friendly and relaxed surroundings and we decided to become members (which means parting with £2 a year) as we want to visit this club more often. So here's our first resolution for 2006.

Haggis met tatties en neaps (met aardappelpuree en gestampte rapen) was onze eerste maaltijd in 2006. Het smaakte heerlijk ondanks alle verschillende verhalen erover. Zowel Michael als ik genoten ervan ofschoon Michael wat moeite had met de smaak van de rapen met jus. Het begon allemaal afgelopen middernacht, toen 2006 net begon. Onverwachts werden we uitgenodigd op de Nieuwjaarsviering van de plaatselijke Rugby Club. Dat leek ons wel wat en we gingen er dus heen. Zodra we arriveerden, werden we naar de keuken geloodst voor wat Haggis. Ik vond het geweldig want ik heb dit traditionele Schotse voedsel altijd al 's willen eten en opeens was het daar op een bord binnen handbereik. Er was muziek en een vrolijke sfeer (met een Schotse tint, vandaar de Haggis), al met al een prettige tijdsverdijf. 's Avonds was er nogmaals een eetverrassing, een groot buffet! Wie wilde kon zichzelf volstouwen met heerlijke zaken van vlees, vis, wild en quiches. Zoals gezegd hebben we een hoop nieuwe mensen ontmoet in een vriendelijke en ontspannende omgeving en we besloten lid te worden (£2 per jaar) zodat we deze club vaker kunnen bezoeken. Ziehier ons eerste voornemen voor 2006.

What are we all searching for?

Every moment many, many people are typing a word in at the same time, on one of the many sites with search engines on the net, but what are we all looking for? Some sites show a list of the searched words during the last week or months. Some sites show a 'live' list and it can be fun to follow the words continuously passing by on such a list. 'Vinden-NL' is one of those site. I tried it out and it really works; can you see me stading on number 8? On this site you can look at lists on 'Alle zoekopdrachten' (All search orders), 'Het Internet (web)' , 'Het Internet (nl)', 'Afbeeldingen' (Images) and 'MP3 bestanden' (MP3 files). Besides you can click on any word that intrigues you as well. Funny, eh?

Elk moment tikken ontieglijk veel mensen tegelijkertijd een woord in op een van de vele sites met een zoekmachine op het internet. Maar waar zoeken we allemaal toch naar? Sommige sites tonen een lijst van de laatste zoekwoorden gedurende een aantal weken of de laatste maand. Sommige sites tonen een 'live' lijst en het is soms best wel heel leuk om allerlei zoekwoorden continu op zo'n lijst te zien opschuiven. 'Vinden-NL' bijvoorbeeld is zo'n site. Ik probeerde het uit en het werkte echt! Zie je me bij nummer 8 staan? Je kunt hier naar lijsten kijken op Alle zoekopdrachten, Het volledige internet, alleen op het 'Nederlandse internet', op 'Afbeeldingen' en 'MP3 bestanden'. Bovendien kun je op elk woord dat jou nieuwsgierig maakt, klikken. Grappig, he?

Animated Knot-Tying

Have you always wanted to know how to make the Trilene Knot or The Eye Splice? Would
you like to know which knot is used in certain situations? Here is a site with lots of information about knot-tying for, to mention a few, boating, climbing and fishing. They are shown in different ways: in a slow animation, a fast animation and a step-by-step drawn manual. At the moment there are 69 knots!

Heb je altijd al willen weten hoe je bepaalde knopen moet maken? Wil je weten welke knoop in welke situatie gebruikt wordt? Hier staat een site met heel veel informatie over knopen voor onder andere zeilen, klimmen en vissen. Ze worden op verschillende manieren getoond: in een langzame animatie, een snelle animatie en een stap-voor-stap getekende uitleg. Op dit moment staan er 69 knopen!
