I was very interested to read this article, particularly having been a professional resume writer since 1998. I actually have a number of pages on my website dedicated to the STAR model, it is a fantastic habit to get into, particularly when writing a resume or government application.

I find many candidates focus lots of attention on the situation and approach, but the result gets limited focus. The truth of it is that it is all about results. But thanks for posting a great article...

In the UK there is a definite perception that facebook is for friends, LinkedIn is for professional connections.

As for the other business networks, when I have invited people to use things like talkbiznow, most people tell me they're just going to use LinkedIn and that's it for professional networking - there's just too many sources of information to be checked if you sign your name up for all the others.

Good article with a new angle on an age old problem. Thanks.

The job advertisement should tell you the behaviours the employer is looking for, and if you can get a position description, that should tell you the competencies, dimensions or behaviours they are looking for. It is also a good idea to research the company on the web. If you can find any information about mission, vision or values, that should also give you some ideas as to the type of values or behaviours the company is looking for.

When putting your cv together, look at it from the audiences point of view.. not just was cool for you, but what would turn on the person reading the cv and making the decision.

However, being known or letting it known you are out there looking via all the mediums mentioned above is essential.

I would also recommend proactively connecting with companies via Twitter and other social networking tools.

I believe tools like Twitter will quickly becoming a more viable recruitment tool and will soon be common practice in Recruitment. Candidates will need to utilise these tools in their job search and be less reliant on using job boards to find a role.
