I stumbled upon a design piece on the London Velodrome by the German architectural magazine Detail back in March and have since then been fortunate enough to attend a number of lectures on the various design aspects of the Olympic Pack and the Velodrome.

Modular Velo, the team behind the London Velodrome have produced these illustrations of the velodrome’s they manufacture ranging from 50 to 5,000 seats.

The concept behind the modular Velodrome is “to help promote the sport of track cycling by creating a flexible Velodrome design which can provide anything from an affordable training venue to an international competition arena with a sustainable legacy.”

The first diagram is great for those looking to understand the different dimensions in tracks and velodrome’s typically constructed. The other illustrations give you a sense of how a velodrome is constructed.

For me, the elegance is in the simplicity of this piece of work.

Unsurprisingly the cyclist Jason Kenny is the fastest person over 200 metres.

Whilst this graphic might be fine for giving  a comparison of different sports, if your like me you’d like to see how the world’s top cycling sprinters compare side-by-side when not racing on the track or down the Champs-Elysees avenue.

Using the data from the Olympic data I have calculated the median average of all the competitors in the Olympic BMX race at London 2012. So what makes an average BMX’er?

Age
The average age of an Olympic BMXer is 26.1 years.

Weight
72 Kilos or 11 stone 3 pounds (158 pounds).

Height
176.9cm or 5ft 9 inches

Want to ride BMX at the Olympics but don’t meet this stats? Don’t worry, as with any type of analysis of this kind “Mr Average” BMXer doesn’t exist.

No rider competing in the Olympics meets these average criteria, they all have unique features.When it comes to riding a BMX, bike handling skills, a good gate start, and avoiding other competitors matters a hell of a lot more.

Another gem of a visualisation from the Guardian’s DataBlog, by Craig Bloodworth of the Information Lab, showing age, weight and height for each of the 11,000 athletes participating in London 2012.

This is a great diagram from the New York Times from there “how to win” series on Track Cycling.

Using the 2008 World Track Championship race featuring Theo Bos against Chris Hoy as an example, this guide is aimed at the those looking for a quick overview of the sprint race. Not for the track enthusiast but useful all the same.

Bike Radar also has a guide and track racing video series presented by Chris Boardman which is actually more comprehensive covering all the main track events and takes a style similar to the videos by ITV for their Tour de France coverage.

The data isn’t always particularly clear in this infographic and I will review the source data when I get a chance.

But stand-out stands which might save your life:

• Head injuries are the biggest killer, so wear a helmet. Yes I’m stating the obvious.
• Most accidents in close proximity, so take extra care at junctions.
