The Maritime Experiential Museum at Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) is a must visit for the whole family! It not only has alot of information about the maritime history of asia, there are also interactive points throughout the museum that kids can enjoy! The best part is that the price is relatively cheap as well!

Things to do at the Maritime Experiential Museum

<img src="http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l626/2bearbear/The%20Maritime%20Experential%20Museum/SAM_7801.jpg" width="640"height="480"border="0" alt="The Maritime Experential Museum Level 1">
The Maritime Experential Museum Level 1

At the entrance of the museum, you will see the Bao Chuan…

<img src="http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l626/2bearbear/The%20Maritime%20Experential%20Museum/SAM_7796.jpg" width="640"height="480"border="0" alt="Bao Chuan - Zheng He's treasure ship">
Bao Chuan – Zheng He’s treasure ship

Bao Chuan is actually the treasure ship of Zheng He’s fleet of ships. Its main symbol is the figurine called Bi Shu (did we spell that right?). Legend has it that Bi Shu stole treasure, kept it to himself but was discovered by Zheng He. Zheng He then punished Bi Shu and placed him to guard the treasure. Hence, now Bi Shu is associated with guardian of wealth, well…it’s all just a myth. The cool part is that it actually moves during the start of the show. The light brown portion will show a short clip about Zheng He and his expedition to this part of the world!

Moving to the left, you will see “The Souk” exhibition.

<img src="http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l626/2bearbear/The%20Maritime%20Experential%20Museum/SAM_7799.jpg" width="640"height="480"border="0" alt="The Souk - Ports along the Maritime Silk Route">
The Souk – Ports along the Maritime Silk Route

The Souk covers ports along the maritime silk route such as Quanzhou, Qui Nhon, Palembang, Malacca, Galle, Calicut, Muscat and Malindi.

<img src="http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l626/2bearbear/The%20Maritime%20Experential%20Museum/SAM_7786.jpg" width="480"height="640"border="0" alt="Along the Souk">
Along the Souk

Here, kids can play the various interactive games such as learning to trade in a port, taking photos superimposed on a traditional costume and watching video of the construction of the Omani Dhow (Jewel of Muscat)

<img src="http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l626/2bearbear/The%20Maritime%20Experential%20Museum/SAM_7783.jpg" width="640"height="480"border="0" alt="Dhow - A gift from the government of Oman to Singapore">
Dhow – A gift from the government of Oman to Singapore

The Dhow (aka Jewel of Muscat) is a centre piece in the Maritime Experiential Museum. It is a gift from Oman and it is entirely constructed out of organic material (i.e. no nails!). Fibres are interwoven and these strong fibres are then used to hold the pieces of wood that form the ship. After construction, the ship actually took the journey that the forefathers took and finally arrived in Singapore! Then President Nathan accepted the gift on behalf of the people of Singapore!

<img src="http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l626/2bearbear/The%20Maritime%20Experential%20Museum/SAM_7789.jpg" width="640"height="480"border="0" alt="Information about the Dhow">
Information about the Dhow

The other main attraction at the Maritime Experiential Museum is the Typhoon Theatre.

<img src="http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l626/2bearbear/The%20Maritime%20Experential%20Museum/SAM_7785.jpg" width="480"height="640"border="0" alt="Entrance to the Typhoon Theatre">
Entrance to the Typhoon Theatre

The story starts with a chinese trading/sea faring company being entrusted with carrying a gift from China to Oman.

<img src="http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l626/2bearbear/The%20Maritime%20Experential%20Museum/SAM_7792.jpg" width="640"height="480"border="0" alt="Storyline of the Typhoon Theatre">
Storyline of the Typhoon Theatre

The father (captain) and son (first mate) together with the ambassador takes the golden cup and begins on the journey. You will then enter the typhoon theatre which is actually a 4D show. The ship then enters a storm and eventually sinks, leaving the treasure at the bottom of the ocean. During the storm, you will feel the wind, droplets of water as well as the platform on which you’re seated, move a little.

The show nicely leads to S.E.A Aquarium – The World’s Largest Aquarium…

<img src="http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l626/2bearbear/The%20Maritime%20Experential%20Museum/SAM_7793.jpg" width="640"height="480"border="0" alt="Sunken Ship at the S.E.A Aquarium - World's Largest Aquarium">
Sunken Ship at the S.E.A Aquarium – World’s Largest Aquarium

It is like a preview of the aquarium (enticing you to pay to go into the aquarium itself) where the sunken ship from the 4D movie is shown in the tank together with marine life inside.

<img src="http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l626/2bearbear/The%20Maritime%20Experential%20Museum/SAM_7794.jpg"width="640"height="480" border="0" alt="Viewing point of the S.E.A Aquarium">
Viewing point of the S.E.A Aquarium

Paying the low price to the maritime experiential museum, we think it is well worth it to enjoy the aquarium at these 2 viewing areas. You will be able to sea the sharks, hammer head at that plus all other smaller and interesting fish.

<img src="http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l626/2bearbear/The%20Maritime%20Experential%20Museum/SAM_7802.jpg" width="640"height="480" border="0" alt="The Maritime Experential Museum Level B1">
The Maritime Experential Museum Level B1

Moving on, you will arrive at the Maritime Archaeology Gallery. Here you will see artefacts from the Bakau and Temasek shipwrecks. Nearby is another main attraction of the museum – the Bao Chuan Cutaway

<img src="http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l626/2bearbear/The%20Maritime%20Experential%20Museum/SAM_7795.jpg" width="640"height="480"border="0" alt="Bao Chuan Cutaway">
Bao Chuan Cutaway

It is a cross-section of the ship showing its treasures such as the giraffe that Zheng He brought back to show to the emperor. Below which, there is also the pirates and pirate hunters exhibit. Zheng He was also a pirate hunter in pirate infested waters.

Navy Open House 2013 was a blast! It’s really cool to be up close with our very own Navy ships! The journey starts at the Singapore Expo. Although the queue was long, the queues moved very fast in an orderly fashion and soon we were heading into Changi Naval Base!

<img src="http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l626/2bearbear/Navy%20Open%20House%202013/SAM_9353_zpse1252ef1.jpg" width="640"height="480"border="0" alt=" Navy Open House NOH 2013!"/>

After a quick security check, we immediately chanced upon our very own submarines!

<img src="http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l626/2bearbear/Navy%20Open%20House%202013/SAM_9289_zpsf192ebca.jpg" width="640"height="480"border="0" alt=" Submarine at the Navy Open House 2013!"/>

It was really cool to be able to see these amazing boats in action right in front of us! We also managed to catch the dynamic display segment by the Naval Diving Unit, Naval Helicopter as well as the submarines. Displays such as this just shows the professionalism of our Navy personnel. Professional and cool!

I Love Navy Board with the Landing Ship Tank (LST)

One of the highlights of the day was the ship visit to our Navy ships. The Endurance Class LST (Landing Ship Tank) is the biggest class of ship in our Navy and it was amazing to have stepped on board this fine ship for the very first time!

In addition to the LST, visitors can also visit the Bedok Class Mine Counter Measure Vessels (MCMVs), Fearless Class Patrol Vessels, Victory Class Missile Corvettes as well as the Formidable Class Stealth Frigates!

<img src="http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l626/2bearbear/Navy%20Open%20House%202013/SAM_9338_zpscfe527ef.jpg" width="640"height="480"border="0" alt=" Ships at the RSN's Navy Open House!"/>

You can also visit foreign warships at this year’s Navy Open House. One of the highlights must be the Littoral Combat Ships from the United States Navy – USS FREEDOM!

<img src="http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l626/2bearbear/Navy%20Open%20House%202013/SAM_9341_zps36d458c5.jpg" width="640"height="480"border="0" alt=" Foreign Warships at Navy Open House Singapore"/>

Besides ship visits, visitors can also ballot for a chance to ride onboard these ships as well! Duck rides were also available. Just have to Q. In case you ask where they sail to…the answer is “Cruise to Nowhere!” Sounds very Star Cruise hor?

There’s also a ONE SAF Avenue, where visitors can have plenty of photo opportunities with assets from the Army and Air Force. In the 3G SAF, the three services (land, sea and air) work together as one integrated and formidable fighting force! Phew!

<img src="http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l626/2bearbear/Navy%20Open%20House%202013/SAM_9296_zpscfb42da9.jpg" width="640"height="480"border="0" alt=" Tanks from the Army"/>

If the weather gets hot or the rain threatens, no worries at all. There are several tents that you can visit. For the foodies, check out the F&B tent where there are many food and drinks options available. There are also performances on stage while you enjoy your meals! Don’t forget to try the Mao Shan Wang ice cream! Yummilicious!

At the Experience Zone, you can try your hand at fire fighting or prove your worth as a marksman at the shooting range.

Nestled at the corner of level 2 at Parkway Parade is Toby’s the Dessert Asylum. Kate and I saw the unpretentious ambience of the place and decided to give it a try.

<img src="http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l626/2bearbear/Toby%20Dessert/PicsArt_1346566547103.jpg" width="600"height="400"border="0" alt="Toby's the Dessert Asylum @ Parkway Parade">
Toby’s the Dessert Asylum @ Parkway Parade

The first thing we noticed was that the crew did not have any uniform or same-coloured polo-T. Everyone wore their own shirts to work. Everyone was able to be cashier, serve the food and clear the tables. Talk about empowering! Perhaps it’s a family owned business? Anyone care to comment?

We took some time to scan through the menu as there were simply too many items to choose from!

<img src="http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l626/2bearbear/Toby%20Dessert/PicsArt_1346562904501.jpg" width="600"height="400"border="0" alt="Mains Menu @ Toby's the Dessert Asylum">
Mains Menu @ Toby’s the Dessert Asylum

The blue lightning beside some of the dish represents “Chef’s recommendation” or something along those lines. This day, we decided to have one mains and one dessert to share, so we went with the pork stew baked rice.

<img src="http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l626/2bearbear/Toby%20Dessert/PicsArt_1346565042979.jpg" width="400"height="600"border="0" alt="Pork Stew Baked Rice with Chardonnay @ Toby's the Dessert Asylum">
Pork Stew Baked Rice with Chardonnay @ Toby’s the Dessert Asylum – $12.95

The pork stew somewhat resembled the chinese mei cai kou rou. Surprisingly, this east (pork stew) meets west (baked rice with cheese) combination, worked really well and we tucked into it readily!

Next we had our dessert.

<img src="http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l626/2bearbear/Toby%20Dessert/PicsArt_1346562765639.jpg" width="600"height="400"border="0" alt="Dessert Menu @ Toby's the Dessert Asylum">
Dessert Menu @ Toby’s the Dessert Asylum

We scanned through the menu and decided to go for another chef’s recommendation that needed 15 minutes of waiting time – The Leaning Tower of Toby.

<img src="http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l626/2bearbear/Toby%20Dessert/PicsArt_1346568041331.jpg" width="400"height="600"border="0" alt="The Leaning Tower of Toby @ Toby's the Dessert Asylum - $12.95">
The Leaning Tower of Toby @ Toby’s the Dessert Asylum – $12.95

The tower was made up of 2 squarish pastries, sandwiched between a strawberry / whipped cream layer as well as a scoop of vanilla ice cream, topped with another roll-like pastry.

The highlight of this dessert would be the fresh cream that went really well with the pastry and berries (there were blue berries as well). We think that the taste and presentation was good. But the price was a little steep.

We also ordered a bottle of Chardonnay ($28.95) to accompany our meal and dessert.

All in all, Toby’s the Dessert Asylum offers good service (friendly staff), warm and welcoming ambience. Standard of food is somewhat comparable to most western joints. Good place to hang out with friends!

To many people, being a travel blogger (especially in Singapore) is like a dream come true. Afterall, it is not without its perks. We do get invited to visit this attraction, stay at that hotel and try out new restaurants. However, behind all the “glitz and glamour” of having the dream job, the hard truth is that travel blogging is TOUGH and here’s why…

Hard Truth No. 1 : You run your own business

No one ever told us that being a travel blogger is like running your own business AKA TOUGH. Besides writing (which you must enjoy), you tend to various aspects of the site much like a business. You will have to write good quality content (really important!), market the site, speak to potential sponsors, negotiate with companies, compete for travel spots, ensure good customer service, do up your financials and constantly think of ways to improve. Of course, you will be travelling much of the time as well (which drains you physically – we’ll get to that)

Hard Truth No. 2 : Blurred distinction between Work & Play

Since the business is your baby, you will spend alot of time thinking about it. Even in bed. Just before you sleep. If you hold a 9 to 5 job, the distinction is clear. You will focus on your job and go home and relax. The weekends are free for you to enjoy. Not so when you own a business. It becomes a 247 task to make sure that your business runs smoothly.

Travelling also takes on a different meaning. In the past, travelling means “Yay! Time to chillax!”. With travel blogging as a full time job, you will have to think alot about what the readers (yes, we’re thinking of you when we travel) need from our travel experiences. What are the small nuances that will help our readers in their next travel trip. How to have picture perfect moments (still waiting for camera sponsors…) and to deliver the best content to our readers.

Not that we’re complaining, but it is afterall now a whole new ball game.

Hard Truth No. 3 : You really don’t get paid much

You must be thinking that being invited to all the countries, attractions, hotels and restaurants must mean that the companies pay us alot. No. They don’t. Sponsors dont usually give you spending $ per se, which means that you will still need to spend to buy that souvenir or enjoy that dinner.

To that end, living in Singapore also adds to the stress because some months you may do well and in others, “not so well” may be an understatement. The stress is constant and you do have mouths to feed. Aka Kate’s.

Travel blogging is still a dream job!

However, it is not all that bad. It is really a dream job! Writing and travelling combines what we love to do. Takes us to places and allows us to share these experiences with you, our readers.

Whatever you’ll be trying out in the future, the most important thing is to enjoy it!

Zaanse Schans is a little village located along the Zaan River. In the past, this river had thousands of windmills producing spices and mills such as saw, oil and dye. However, due to urbanisation, many of the windmills were relocated. To save the tradition (and the windmills) some locals came together and preserved what was left. Today, there are still working windmills on the banks of the Zaan River. Together with clogs shops, cheese shops and museums, Zaanse Schans has today become a huge tourist attraction in and around Amsterdam.

Things to do and Attractions at Zaanse Schans

Big Mama Korean Restaurant located at the corner of Kim Tian Road (Address : 2 Kim Tian Road, Singapore 169244) has been making waves since inception. Kate and I have already visited this hugely popular restaurant twice and we would most likely visit again soon…

Recommended Dishes at Big Mama Korean Restaurant

If it is your first time visiting Big Mama, no worries. There are several recommendations including the Dakgalbi (Spicy Grilled Chicken – $15 per serving , minimum 2 servings) and Suyuk (Boiled Pork – $25) and you will definitely not go wrong with these recommendations. Even if you’re a newbie to Korean food like Kate and I, the friendly staff will show you the “ropes”.

On our first visit, we were pleasantly surprised that the staff took time to explain the different ways to savour the Suyuk. She made 3 different versions of the dish for us as she explained whether the dips were spicy or not (not spicy one). Unfortunately, we did not take many photos on our first visit. Hence, we made sure we did on our 2nd!

<img src="http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l626/2bearbear/Big%20Mama%20Korean%20Restaurant/SAM_9280_zps9101c84f.jpg" width="640"height="480"border="0" alt=" Free side dishes at Big Mama's!"/>
Free side dishes at Big Mama’s!

These 6 side dishes (ignore the reddish looking one at the extreme right – it’s actually a dip for the soup) are complimentary (AND REFILLABLE!!!! Did we put enough exclamations??). Our favourite, like most customers is the lotus root. In this dish, there are long beans and lotus root. The white sauce is peanuty and sesame-ey while the vege are crunchy and fresh. Really gets your appetite going!

<img src="http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l626/2bearbear/Big%20Mama%20Korean%20Restaurant/SAM_9286_zpsc7c927a1.jpg" width="640"height="480"border="0" alt=" pDakgalbi (spicy grilled chicken) - Recommended Dish @ Big Mama Korean Restaurant"/>
Dakgalbi (spicy grilled chicken) – Recommended Dish @ Big Mama Korean Restaurant

The Dakgalbi is definitely our favourite dish! Considering that we do not usually order the same dish twice, this dish must have caught our attention, having ordered it on both our visits. You will have a choice of having the dish prepared right in front of you or for the staff to prepare it first before bringing it to you. Well, the cool thing is that you can see how it’s done right before your very eyes. The not so cool thing? Well…smell that lingers on your shirt…Oh, on that note, please dress comfortably and not to the nines. Because of the preparation methods, the smell is actually quite strong. Yummy but strong.

You know when you watch Korean shows and towards the end of the meal, they will pour in some rice and fry it? This can be done with Dakgalbi. Again, no worries if you’re a newbie. The friendly staff will approach you to ask if you would like to have fried rice. A bowl of rice ($3 per bowl) will be added and fried together with generous amounts of grounded sesame seeds, seaweed and seasoning. Something not to be missed!

Last but not least, do not be mistaken by the red colour and think that this is “kimchi”. If you taste the Dakgalbi and the kimchi side dish. You will notice the difference. Another korean food lesson for us. The kimchi is spicy though. Beware…:)

<img src="http://i1127.photobucket.com/albums/l626/2bearbear/Big%20Mama%20Korean%20Restaurant/SAM_9281_zpse42a1ce6.jpg" width="640"height="480"border="0" alt=" Emuk Jeongol @ Big Mama - A Fish Cake Hot Pot"/>
Emuk Jeongol @ Big Mama – A Fish Cake Hot Pot

Remember the reddish dip above? It goes with the fish cake in this fish cake hot pot also known as Emuk Jeongol. We’re really glad that we were recommended this dish because it is a nice mild yet delicious soup that balances the strong tastes of the Dakgalbi. The servings of fish cake is really GENEROUS. We were thinking to ourselves “there’s still more fish cake?!” after eating so many pieces! There were 5 of us and we still left 1 piece standing. The texture of the fish cake is not the “do-ing” kind that we usually eat with our mee pok. It is chewy yet not jelat. Great dish.

Remember that the side dishes are refillable!!!

Location of Big Mama Korean Restaurant – Close to the intersection of Tiong Bahru and Kim Tian Road

REMEMBER : To avoid disappointment, you MUST make reservations by calling 6270 7704. For dinners, there are 2 time slots, 6 to 8pm and 8 to 11pm (last order at 10pm). If you are in the 6 to 8pm time slot, you must leave at 8pm for the next wave of customers. Well, good food ought to be shared right?

Overall Comment : Food is definitely good and service was great on our first visit. During our 2nd visit, the staff seemed to be quite busy as the restaurant is almost always full. Oh, the smokey thingy as well. Otherwise, MUST GO!
