As big of a story as the opening of Norfolk’s first-in-the-state light rail line was this weekend, it is another event which kept riders such as myself away from it: the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge fire. According to this story, the fire started August 4 and has grown to be the largest since 1974, covering almost 6,000 acres of the 112,000 acre refuge.

The fire has made going outside difficult as the smoke has blanketed the area. We were under a code orange air quality alert:

Code orange means individuals with respiratory or heart problems, older adults and children should reduce prolonged or heavy outdoor exertion, according to the National Weather Service.

The winds are supposed to keep most of the smoke to the south of us today.

As I do every morning, I went outside to get my newspaper off the porch and for sure, it is better than it has been. The last few days have not been fun with the higher, code red alerts. I’ve stayed inside – and been fairly productive in the process

But I sure hope I get a chance to ride the Tide this week

Gina Smith editor-in-chief of BYTE.com and co-author of iWoz: How I Invented the Personal Computer and Had Fun Along the Way (available at the iBook Store) spoke to Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak yesterday and according to BYTE the announcement that Jobs was stepping down as Apple CEO made him “happy for Jobs. ”

According to Steve Wozniak Jobs, “really has had to sacrifice a lot to run Apple. I mean, just your time, everybody wants you day and night, that’s what I mean by sacrifices. It takes so much out of anyone to be under just the constant pressure and demands like that. ”

Wozniak later added that, “Steve needs now to just have some ‘Steve time. “He deserves it.”

The best part of the interview with Wozniak was his confidence that Apple will continue because Wozniak said, “You’ve got to remember. He was surrounded by great, great people at Apple … and those people are still there. I don’t think the core Apple culture will change because of (Jobs’) leaving, not for a long time. Apple is set up.”

Wozniak is right there are a lot of good people at Apple. It’s doubtful that things will change — at least not immediately. Although the people remaining at Apple have a legacy that is very important to uphold and nurture. We think they can keep that legacy alive and we have confidence in the future of Apple, Inc.

Aaliyah|Dame Dash Remembers Aaliyah 10 Years After Her Death

Aaliyah's death 10 years ago stunned the nation, but no more than her boyfriend at the time, Dame Dash. The couple's magnetic relationship was apparent to anyone blessed enough to see them together, and Dame recently sat down with The Juice to dish on the time they shared together.

"She was intelligent and she caught me," Dash tells The Juice. "I'm the kind of guy who says things sometimes just to make myself laugh, but she would just catch me making jokes for me. I couldn't get anything past her. She had a very quick mind and a very kind heart."

Both artists were on top of their game at the time of Aaliyah's death, so they didn't have a lot of physical time together during their relationship, but Dame cherished every moment of it.

"The energy we created together for people to observe was kind of crazy. We'd be in a room full of people talking to each other and it felt like everyone was listening but it would be just us. It would be like we were the only ones in the room," Dash says. "It was like something was going down in history every time I was with her. Every time I was around her I felt it was the place to be. Our time together meant so much that when we got more time, we felt like that [engagement] would be next. She was one of the best people I ever met. Even with the pain I felt, I would do it all over again."

ATLANTA -- A faction that lost a lawsuit over who should lead a civil rights group co-founded by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. is appealing the judge's ruling.
Several leaders from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference - including ousted treasurer Spiver Gordon - held a news conference Monday afternoon to formally announce an appeal in which they continue to seek control over the group.

James Harrison: I Try to Hurt People, Not Injure Them

Hits to the head are drawing increased scrutiny from the NFL, in the wake of a weekend that saw several of them leave players knocked out on the field. There's even talk of suspensions for future incidents in an effort to force players to be more diligent about avoiding them.

Judging by Steelers linebacker James Harrison's response to the outcry over two hits he put on Browns receivers Sunday, that might be the only way to get players to stop. Harrison said it would be a travesty if he was fined for hits that knocked Josh Cribbs and Mohamed Massaquoi out of Sunday's game. Then, he went a little bit further.

"I don't want to see anyone injured," Harrison said, "but I'm not opposed to hurting anyone.

"There's a difference. When you're injured, you can't play. But when you're hurt, you can shake it off and come back. I try to hurt people."

Harrison is splitting a pretty thin hair there, especially in light of the fact that both guys he tried to "hurt" on Sunday were rendered unable to play. Vocalizing his intent, whatever distinctions are drawn, probably won't help Harrison when the league decides on his punishment.

That's not to say that the hits were dirty simply because the two players were knocked silly. There didn't seem to be the same malicious intent that appeared to be in play when Patriots safety Brandon Meriweather -- who was equally unapologetic for his actions -- launched himself headfirst into Ravens tight end Todd Heap, for example. There are going to be blows to the head in a game as violent as professional football and some of them are going to come on plays that shouldn't be penalized.

Legal or dirty, the push to suspend players is going to be the best way for the league to cut down on hits to the head. Players aren't going to pull up or think twice because of a fine, in large part because the kinds of hits that draw fines are also the kinds of hits that wind up making players big money as free agents. Missing those plays, on the other hand, is a one-way ticket to the UFL.

Maybe Harrison's hits wouldn't be deemed worthy of suspension, but the league should be doing more to eliminate them whether the intent is to maim, injure or simply hurt another player.

During Saturday's Rutgers-Army game, Rutgers defensive tackle Eric LeGrand was injured while trying to make a tackle during a kickoff return towards the end of the game. He was motionless for seven minutes and taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, and yesterday, the school announced that the 20-year-old has no movement below the neck. His family issued a statement, "We want to say thank you to everyone for all of your prayers, kind words, and well wishes. We appreciate every single thought. Eric is in good spirits and we are praying for a full recovery."

According to Rutgers, LeGrand's injury was at the C3 and C4 level of his spinal cord; CNN explained, "Generally, the higher up on the spine an injury occurs, the more the nervous system is affected. LeGrand's injury occurred in the middle of the neck. Doctors said Monday that with many spinal cord injuries, the first 72 hours after surgery give a good indication of how much function a patient may recover." Rutgers coach Greg Schiano said yesterday, "Eric's spirits were as good as you could expect and he was cognizant of me being there and his mom and everybody. I saw him before and after surgery. However, teammates were "visibly shaken" when speaking with reporters about visiting LeGrand. Khaseem Greene said, "It was bad. You don't want to see your brother like that. But at the same time, I needed that. We needed that. We didn't talk to him. We let him rest. The main focus was just to see him," and Scott Vallone, LeGrand's best friend, said, "I told him that I loved him. "He acknowledged I was there. His eyes opened up pretty wide. It was good. He's going to make it. I know his personality.''

A Rutgers student told ABC News that hearing about LeGrand's injury was upsetting, "This year has been really tough. Every time I look up Rutgers is in the national headlines for the wrong reasons... You wouldn't expect either event to happen here. There's kind of a feeling here like what else can happen to us?"

Aly Michalka Has “Fearlessness” for ‘Hellcats’

Former Disney star Aly Michalka has been popping up everywhere lately and has now stuck her landing in the hit CW show, Hellcats! But, just like her sister AJ Michalka, Aly has also been hard at work on her film career as well as music.

Aly not only is working on her new album with AJ for 78violet, but can also be seen in theaters in Easy A with Emma Stone and on TV in Hellcats with Ashley Tisdale.

“It takes a certain amount of focus and fearlessness to be involved in that sport,” 21-year-old Aly told Entertainment Tonight.

Aly didn’t have any formal training as a cheerleader, but her mother did cheer for the Rams, Raiders and UCLA “so I definitely have some legit blood in me.”

Even though Aly is conquering her fears in Hellcats, she doesn’t have any rivalry with her sister AJ who can be seen on the big screen in Secretariat.

“We go out for the same parts every once in awhile, and that we kind of laugh about because we’re completely different people,” Aly explained. “Even if [one of us did land it], I think we would be super supportive of each other, because if I want anybody else to book a role that’s not me, I want it to be AJ.”

The sisters are still working together on their music, but they’ve ditched their previous “Aly & AJ” name.

“We’re women now and we’re growing up,” 19-year-old AJ said. “It was time for a change.”

“Our sound is changing, and the changes that are happening are natural and it’s been a slow progression,” Aly explained and the girls have switched names to 78violet.

“Purple and violet have been a huge part of out lives — it’s a really powerful color. … 78 stands for platinum in the periodic table of elements,” Aly said. “The definition of platinum means that no substance can corrode it, and I was like, ‘Dude, that’s our relationship. We cannot be corroded. Our relationship as sisters is unstoppable.”

And that certainly seems to be true!

Mike Tyson Sued for $25 Million

Mike Tyson is being sued by the photographer who claims the former heavyweight champ beat him down last November ... and he's asking for a whopping $25 million.

As TMZ previously reported, Tyson was arrested after a run-in with a photog at LAX. Tyson was initially booked for misdemeanor battery, but the L.A. City Attorney officially rejected the case, citing "insufficient evidence."

According to the civil lawsuit, the photographer -- Antonio Echavarria -- claims Tyson attacked him, hit him with a closed left fist, and broke his camera. Echavarria also claims he suffered a concussion and strain to his spinal cord.

He's asking for $25 million in damages.

Junior Seau told police that he wasn't trying to commit suicide when he drove off a cliff in Carlsbad, CA early this morning -- insisting that he simply fell asleep at the wheel.

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... Seau told police that he simply nodded off in the driver's seat of his Cadillac Escalade in the hours after his arrest for allegedly attacking his 25-year-old girlfriend -- and never intended to drive off the cliff.

We're told Seau showed no outward signs of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs ... but a blood test was taken shortly after the incident and results are expected back some time in the next 6 weeks.

The accident is still under investigation.

BCS Rankings: BCS Standings and College Football Rankings Week 8 – Alabama and South Carolina both slipped further into the rankings as the latest BCS Rankings and College Football Rankings Week 8 had been released. The Bowl Championship Series (BCS) rankings was just released October 17 after the final results of the Week 7 games were in. The new number 1 on the BCS Rankings 2010 was Oklahoma.
For the NCAA College Football Rankings Week 8, Oregon remains at number 1 while the number 1 ranked Oklahoma at the BCS Rankings 2010 is at number 3. Quality wise and statistically wise at the moment the BCS rankings will hold the greater weight since this is the official ranking from BCS organizers.

Deals that contains frozen vegetables offered by Wal-Mart nationwide and Kroger stores in the Southeast may include glass fragments, the supplier said Friday in announcing a voluntary recall.

Although there are actually no reports of injuries, the Pictsweet Co. of Bells, Tennessee, is advising the public to not consume the recalled store-brand vegetables due to the possible for hurt.

The Rangers, with some incredibly daring baserunning and the mastery of pitcher Cliff Lee, have made history. They are finally in the American League Championship Series.

The New York Yankees are waiting for them.

The Rangers secured their position in baseball's version of the Final Four by putting away the Tampa Bay Rays, 5-1, in the decisive Game 5 of the AL Division Series on Tuesday night at Tropicana Field. The Rangers have finally erased the stigma of being the only Major League franchise never to have advanced to the League Championship Series.

"It's awesome," third baseman Michael Young said. "This is the best moment in team history and I'm so proud and excited to be a part of it."

"This means everything," shortstop Elvis Andrus said. "This is history. This team is really special. We can still do a lot of good things."

Andrus brought it to an end in the ninth. Rays outfielder B.J. Upton swung at Lee's 120th pitch -- 90th strike -- and popped it up to shortstop. Young started jumping up and down. Ian Kinsler pumped his fist in the area.

Lee jumped into the arms of catcher Bengie Molina. The rest of the team joined them in a celebration reminiscent of so many huge wins the Rangers have enjoyed during the season.

But this is easily the biggest victory in Rangers' history.

"When I saw that ball go up, I couldn't contain myself," Kinsler said in the joyous, champagne-drenched clubhouse. "I feel like I'm going to pass out. This game was incredible. It took everything out of me. But what an awesome feeling."

Now the Rangers can bask in the distinction of being the only Major League team to win a five-game Division or League Championship Series by winning all three games on the road.

"Three the hard way," hitting coach Clint Hurdle said.

"This is overwhelming," outfielder Josh Hamilton said.

"Amazing," outfielder Nelson Cruz said. "To win all three games on the road. Now we really are a part of history."

Andrus, Cruz and Vladimir Guerrero scored the Rangers' first three runs in stunning fashion. All three scored from second base on something other than a base hit. Kinsler then finished off the Rays with a two-run home run in the top of the ninth.

Andrus, in the first inning, scored from second on Hamilton's grounder in what could go down as a career-defining play for him. Guerrero's run in the sixth was the ultimate proof that those who thought during free agency last winter that he was in physical decline were dead wrong.

Manager Ron Washington scoffed and took offense at the suggestion the Rangers won the game playing the Rays' style of baseball.

"That's the way we've played all year," Washington said. "Baserunning. It's always been important to us. That's our style of baseball."

Also wrong were those that thought the Rangers would crater in Tropicana after losing two chances to close out the series in Arlington. But Lee did not pitch in Arlington.

Lee, expertly mixing his cut fastball with a curve that often buckled Rays hitters, pitched his third career playoff complete game, allowing six hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out 11.

"Tonight was all Cliff Lee," Young said. "We had some aggressive baserunning tonight and Kins hit a big home run in the ninth. But this was all Cliff Lee. When we scored that second run, you could see the look in his eye change."

Lee is now 6-0 with a 1.44 ERA in seven postseason starts, including 2-0 with a 1.13 ERA in his two starts against the Rays.

"I expected to have success," Lee said. "I expected to pitch well. I just didn't necessarily expect to allow one run and go nine innings."

"He was the Cliff Lee that everybody is used to seeing," Rays outfielder Carl Crawford said.

"We just couldn't get anything going," Rays third baseman Evan Longoria said.

The only problem for the Rangers is Lee, after throwing 120 pitches, will likely be unable to pitch until Game 3 of the ALCS.

The Rangers will open the ALCS at 7 p.m. CT on Friday at the Ballpark in Arlington. Left-hander C.J. Wilson is expected to pitch for the Rangers against left-hander CC Sabathia for the Yankees. Game 2 is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Ballpark and the Rangers will likely pitch Colby Lewis rather than bring back Lee on three days' rest.

"That's the way it looks right now," Washington said.

The biggest thing the Rangers did in Tropicana Field was score first in Games 1 and 2 victories last week. That was the case again on Tuesday night and it was their baserunning that came up big in three innings.

Andrus led off the first with a single to right. After Young struck out, Andrus stole second on a 2-1 pitch to Hamilton. After the count went full, Andrus broke for third and Hamilton hit a chopper to first. As first baseman Carlos Pena fielded the ball and flipped to pitcher David Price covering, Andrus broke for home and scored easily without a throw.

"I was just playing baseball the way we played all year," Andrus said. "That's what we need to do. Play hard and play aggressive."

Ben Zobrist had an RBI single for the Rays in the third, but the Rangers got the run back in the top of the fourth with more daring baserunning. Cruz doubled with two out, then immediately tried to steal third. He was safe and kept on coming as catcher Kelly Shoppach's throw sailed into left field.

"There are nights when we've got to power our way through it and there are nights when we do it that way," Washington said.

Guerrero scored his run in the sixth after reaching on a one-out single and advancing to second on Cruz's infield hit. Kinsler followed with a grounder right at Pena, who threw to second for the force on Cruz. Shortstop Jason Bartlett got the out and then fired to Price, who was covering first, to complete the double play.

But Kinsler beat the throw. Price didn't think so and went to say something to first-base umpire Mike DiMuro. As he was doing so, Guerrero was rounding third and dashing for home. Price recovered and threw home but his throw was a bit high and off the plate, allowing Guerrero to slide in head-first for the run.

"That's three runs right there that's typically the kind of runs we score," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "So that was the part of it that was a little bit maddening. But they played well, they played hard, they came back after two big losses in Texas. You have to give them a lot of credit."

Lee did the rest and on a warm October night under the Tropicana dome, the Rangers rode into history.

I guess that settles it. I like the choice. He's a Braves kind of guy, pretty much every player already likes the guy, he'll fit right in and retain that Coxian style in the Braves clubhouse.

So much for the managerial "search." Best thing if this is the guy the Braves want, why keep everyone guessing.

Peter over at Capitol Avenue Club has a post up about this hiring being a mistake for the Braves. This is going to be the sentiment that a lot of folks will have. Not the majority, but a good number of fans. That will be the case until Fredi wins something with Atlanta.

Taking over for a Hall of Fame manager that is loved by just about every player in baseball is going to be one of the toughest jobs in the Majors next year. Every decision will be scrutinized with the "Bobby wouldn't have done that" label. The same thing could be said for Roger McDowell when he took over for Leo Mazzone -- it was an almost impossible task to live up to the expectations at the time.

The Braves are a different kind of club than most clubs out there who blame on-field performance on managers while not giving them the players who can perform at the Major League level. The Braves make their best effort to put a winning team on the field every year, and it usually works out. If it doesn't, they're not going to be riding the manager or blaming a coach (isn't Terry Pendlelton still the hitting coach).

The truth is that no one could take over for Bobby and have all the fans be happy. It's a rare thing in sports that managers leave with such applause from everyone, so this situation is one that comes around very rarely. So there really is no "man for the job" other than the man who just left.

Until everyone realizes that we can't rehire Bobby Cox, the less upset some will be about this decision. The best we could do is someone who worked and studied under Bobby ... and, someone who is essentially Bobby's choice.

Cast as baseball's John Wayne for more than four decades, the gentleman rancher with the blazing fastball and keen business sense, Nolan Ryan never has been one for outward displays of emotion.

His deep satisfaction on Tuesday night at Tropicana Field, having watched Cliff Lee pitch and will his Texas Rangers to the franchise's first postseason series triumph, came through loud and clear in his soft-spoken words.

"It's unbelievable, really," Ryan said outside a wild clubhouse celebration in the afterglow of a 5-1 decision over the Rays in Game 5 of the American League Division Series. "If you look at this game, it's the biggest game in the history of this organization."

He grinned when it was pointed out that it could be just the start of something really big deep in the heart of Texas.

"Well," he said, in that familiar drawl, "I don't know where it's going to go from here. But I know all of us in this organization are feeling very good tonight. This is quite an achievement by everyone involved."

The Rangers would be returning home and getting ready for the invasion of the New York Yankees in Game 1 of the AL Championship Series on Friday night at Rangers Ballpark.

The Bronx Bombers have been unkind to the Rangers in postseasons past, but Ryan has a feeling this outfit is cut from a different cloth than previous editions.

"We play the Yankees well, and I think we can meet the Yankees head on and compete with them," Ryan said. "Normally in this league, you have to go through New York if you're going somewhere past them. I think our guys anticipated that, and they're ready for it."

As AL West kingpins for the first time since 1999, dethroning the three-time reigning champion Angels, the Rangers played through the court drama that resulted in the awarding of the franchise to Ryan and his group of investors headed by Chuck Greenberg, managing partner and CEO.

The completion of the sale to Ranger Baseball Express LLC came on Aug. 12, with Greenberg working closely with Ryan, the club president, and general manager Jon Daniels to make it all happen.

"This is everything we could have hoped for," Ryan said. "I know everyone involved is thrilled with the way this ballclub has played.

"I believe in momentum and you have to believe you can do it. And this club has believed right from the start. We were able to put some pieces together, and the biggest, obviously, was Cliff. It gave us the lead horse on our pitching staff, and he showed in this series what he's capable of doing."

Because the Rays extended the Rangers to the five-game limit by taking both games in Arlington, Lee won't be available to manager Ron Washington until Game 3 of the series against the Yankees.

"It was hard to get comfortable tonight, because we know how dangerous that ballclub over there [the Rays] is," Ryan said. "You never want to give them any momentum. We've seen what they can do when they get something rolling. Cliff was just so good, so dominant, he never let that happen."

Texas will have another talented southpaw, C.J. Wilson, rested and ready for Game 1 against CC Sabathia, the Yankees' lead horse.

Ryan is thrilled that the home-field advantage belongs to his club even though the Rangers are seeking their first postseason win at home, having dropped six.

"Our fans showed this weekend how hungry they are, too," Ryan said. "That was the disappointment of the weekend, that we didn't get it done for 100,000 people in our place.

"It will be rocking on Friday night again with the Yankees in town."

Cliff Lee added another impressive line to his growing October resume, putting the Texas Rangers on his back and carrying them into the AL championship series for the first time. Lee tossed another postseason gem and Texas won a playoff series for the first time, beating the Tampa Bay Rays 5-1 Tuesday night in a decisive Game 5 on the legs of some daring baserunning. Report: Bears' Cutler Back; Collins Now No. 3
The Bears will try to restore order to their quarterback situation heading into Sunday's game against the Seahawks. Jay Cutler has been cleared to practice fully on Wednesday after suffering a concussion and missing last week's game against the Panthers, the NFL Network's Jason La Canfora tweeted. Barring a setback, he will start against Seattle. Also, Caleb Hanie's brief appearance against the Panthers coupled with a horrid outing by veteran Todd Collins provided sufficient evidence for another change to be made on the Bears' quarterback depth chart. Report: Braves Hire Gonzalez To Succeed Cox

A week after tweaking his right hamstring while coming around a pick in the preseason opener, Wade is indeed feeling better. But coach Erik Spoelstra said Wade likely won't start basketball activities for another week, putting him in jeopardy of missing the Heat's remaining preseason games. It also refers to the method of Man at the end of the track “Can it be so simple? On the debut album Wu-Tang Enter Wu-Tang (36 Chambers):

In 2008, the mixtape called “permanent patient II was leaked on the Internet, it shows some original material as well as freestyle songs by other artists. Inspectah Deck said in an interview that the manifesto was to be originally announced further feature, the permanent patient IIwu tang clan .

Since early 2010, Inspectah Deck started rising again, and expressed interest in collaboration with several members of the Wu-Tang, as well as Snoop Dogg, E-40, Nas & Jadakiss on the album. On CNN's live stream, the Chilean Flag is displayed in the miners lair over 2,000 feet below the Earth's surface, above ground, and it seems everywhere you look on television.

In San Antonio, Texas, they think it's the Texas Flag.

Greg Hall's, who was part of the team that supplied the drill, is from a Houston, Texas company called Drillers Supply International. According to Fox Houston.com, Drillers Supply International developed the plan and formed the crew to dig a hole wide enough to get the capsule into and bring the miners to Earth.
