Outdoor sports have begun!

Krysta has started playing softball for her middle school team. Finally, she has something to keep her active. It has been a long stretch for this very athletic girl since 7th grade basketball ended in November. They have begun practice and had a scrimmage already. She has been playing ball for 6 years now. She can play any position except third and pitching. We threw the ball around for a while. Man o’ man, it takes a bit to get in shape after sitting around all winter.

Darik started his golf season a couple of weeks ago. He got his driver out and started wailing on the balls. There were still piles of snow in the yard. He has improved his distance since last fall and is now driving about 75 yards. But now his interests have curved a bit and he seems to be favoring the “all-American” game. Since his older sister has started softball, he decided he wants to play baseball. He already had a glove and made sure I got him a bat “a real one like Krysta’s”. I tried to get him a plastic bat, or a wiffle ball bat, but that just didn’t do the trick. So I went with the Wilson metal tee-ball bat. I thought it was a little big for him, but turns out he has a mean swing with it. He is crushed that he is not old enough to play tee-ball this year. He won’t turn 5 until August, after the season ends.

This one is so cute, Darik has a little butt wiggle dance thing before he bats.

Waiting for the right pitch.(Photo by Trina Johnson)

Miss Kylee bug is trying her hardest to keep up with her older siblings. She stole one of Darik’s clubs from his bag and started swinging. She threw some balls around and was a good ball-chaser. Her favorite outdoor activity was riding the power wheels four-wheeler with her brother.

Dad steps in to assist Ky with her golfing.

Ky and Darik riding the four-wheeler.(Photo by Trina Johnson)

This golf club is almost as tall as Kylee but that didn't stop her!(Photo by Trina Johnson)

All three of the kids love the outdoors, it is so good to get them outside and get fresh air.

When it was raining and we couldn’t get outside, we practiced our musical talents with guitar hero and rockband.

Darik jammin' on the guitar(Photo by Trina Johnson)

I'm gaga for Google

Are you on the Google bandwagon? There’s Gmail (Google email), Google calendar, Google chat, Google photos, Google groups, Google documents, Google blogs, Google maps, Google images and of course the search engine. It’s common practice now for people to say “Just Google it.” Whenever they want to find something.

According to Wikipedia: "Having found its way increasingly into everyday language, the verb, "google," was added to the Merriam Webster Collegiate Dictionary and the Oxford English Dictionary in 2006, meaning, "to use the Google search engine to obtain information on the Internet." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Google)

You also see Google ads pop up all over websites, like knox.villagesoup.com.

Google is a tremendous organizational tool. I cannot live without my Google!

Gmail
I have Gmail set up for my personal account, another one for my freelance work inquiries, and another one set up for junk mail so when you are forced to enter email address for mailing lists and registering for sites you don’t want to send you mail, they go to a legit email, but don’t flood your personal box. And there is no limit, (well at least not one that anyone could fill up), over 6,000 MB.

Calendars
I have three Google calendars set up, one for my regular every day appointments, one for my class schedule which notes my class times and homework assignments, and another for my work schedule. Then I can share my calendar with friends and family. So my husband, mom, daughter and sister can see my schedule. My husband puts his work schedule on the Google calendar and so does my mom, so I know when they are working. My daughter has a calendar to keep school homework due dates and sports schedules and she can share them with me and her dad and grandma.

Google calendar also has email reminder features so it will email or text message you when you have an appointment. And Google maps show you where the appointment is. You can set up appointments and invite others to attend, send them the directions and they can RSVP through Google too.

You can add public calendars to your calendar. I have added the US holidays, moon phases, local weather and the best thing…. The Red Sox schedule! Now my calendar will tell me when and where the Red Sox are playing! Now if it can just tell me where Papelbon is at any given time. Other public calendars include TV schedules and area fairs and events.

The calendar is arranged with color coded bars and you can turn on or off the calendars you want to view.

Chat
When your friends and family have Google accounts you can see when they are online and chat (instant message) inside Google.

Documents
Google documents allow you to create word docs, spreadsheets and slideshows to share with friends and family. I use that for sharing contacts and address lists with family. Other members can edit the documents and make updates as needed.

Photos
Google photos allows you to upload, store and share your photos with friends and family online.

Blog
Google has teamed up with services like blogspot. Check out my blog 2girlz1boy

iGoogle
The new wave of Google is the iGoogle. This is a page of all sorts of Google gadgets like your gmail inbox and calendar, to do list, joke of the day, newest youTube videos, weather forecast, local gas prices, solar system, Google news, movie and music releases, horoscope, games, Christmas countdown, National Geographic photo of the day, comics, and more.
One on one with Kylee

This weekend, Darik went to my mom’s for an ice fishing derby and Krysta went to a friend’s house for the weekend. So, Ky had my undivided attention for a whole day. More like she dominated my time for the day.

Saturday started out great, I got to sleep in ‘til 7:30a.m. that was a treat. David worked the night shift the night before so Bug and I went quietly into the kitchen to get “doffee” and “eeral”. in Ky’s words, coffee and cereal.

She liked to sit up on the bar stools and eat the “big” table (the bar). I got every box of cereal we had in the pantry, finally, she decided on n Special K with red berries. I poor her a bowl and she screams at me “no milk!” I haven’t had my first cup of coffee yet, so I was not going to argue with her.

I go for the computer and check my email (I’m living in 2008!) Ky was not too happy with that, “no puter” she warns. Wow, does she know me or what? She asks to “dolor”. Bug loves to color, so I get ot some paper and she starts on her masterpiece.

I get a loaf of banana bread going in the bread machine while she colors. Then I decide if I get her involved in a cartoon I can get a peak at my email. “Eintein” (great she wants to watch Little Einstein’s which doesn’t come on until 10.) Then Mickey Mouse Clubhouse comes on, she starts dancing to the theme song. Finally, my chance to grab the laptop. Wrong! “Mommy lap” she demands.

At a commercial break I get up to start some laundry. I am in the laundry room and I hear, “mommy doffee”. Oh no she didn’t. yep, what a sweet girl, she brought me my coffee… from the living room, through the dining room and kitchen to the laundry room. I know what path she took cause she left me a drizzled trail all the way.

Great, now I HAVE to wash the floors. After that I decide to go run some errands. Post office, bank, and breakfast at the Hole in the Wall Bagel. She snacked on a blueberry bagel while I enjoyed my garlic bagel with green olive cream cheese. She entertained the elderly group that was at the table next to us by saying “hi” every 15 seconds.

When we pull into the driveway at home, she always asks “daddy hone?”. “Yes Bug, daddy is home”. She can’t wait to get out of the car and show dad her bagel. She carried the bag around like she had a prize possession in it.

At noon I put her down for a nap. Finally a chance to get on the computer and catch up on everything. Time flew by so fast, next thing I knew two hours went by and she was up from her nap. I didn’t get anything done. Now what can I entertain her with for the next 5 hours? She loves to help with the laundry. That’ll keep her busy for a bit, she tries on everything in the pile.

After my husband went to work I got out the camera and started taking some video and pictures of Ky. I got some of her saying different words. It amazes me how much she has added to her vocabulary in just a couple weeks. Going from one word to two and three word phrases.

Later we headed into town to get a movie and dinner. Ky insisted on chicken and “tatoe”. Super! I was in the mood for some KFC. A perfect side to the dinner is Bug’s fave, cranberry sauce, she ate over half the can.

After dinner we settled in with her nightly routine, cuddle time in the recliner with a cup of milk. Ky is the only one of my children that asks to go to bed and nine times out of ten it is at 7 p.m. on the dot. When she starts asking for “baby” she is ready to go upstairs. She is also the only one of my kids that is attached to a bedtime object.

So, here I sit, in a quiet house at 7:30 p.m. on a Saturday night, on my computer, thinking about my day with my baby bug. Boy am I exhausted!

Ky loves her babies.(Photo by Trina Johnson)

Aren't I cute?(Photo by Trina Johnson)

Pretty girl, blonde and blue(Photo by Trina Johnson)

You can dress her up but she is still a tom-boy. The drive was filled with snow, sleet, rain, you name it we drove through it. If you recall my blog from the last trip (“Are we there yet?”) the trip is quite an excursion for us with three kids who don’t like to ride more than 15 minutes. Adding two hours of drive time to the usual 4-hour trip was not a great way to start off the holiday weekend.

This time they were all fed so we didn’t need to stop for food. And we hoped they would nap at least until we get to our favorite rest stop, the New Hampshire Liquor Store. I remembered the DVD player this time so we started the ride with our favorite Christmas movie, A Christmas Story. We saw it 500 times already before this trip, but it never gets old.

The only thing Darik wanted for Christmas was “a gun”. He has been begging for one for some time now. “You’ll shoot ‘yer eye out!” I tell him, He argues and promises he won’t shoot anything, including his sisters.

My father-in-law is an avid outdoorsman. He has spent the greater part of his life working for the fish and wildlife management base in Greenville before he retired a couple years ago. So the new Bass Pro Shop store is open near Gillette Stadium and he wanted to take the grandchildren. He was hoping Darik would love it. I was like a theme park for him and the kids. There are animal statues everywhere, and live fish and turtles in a stream. Kylee wanted to pet everything. Darik wouldn’t go near anything. The kids (including my husband) climbed on all the boats and ATVs. There is even a shooting range you can target practice with BB guns.

Ky was fascinated by all the wildlife at Bass Pro Shop.(Photo by Trina Johnson)

Darik with Grampy Paul at Bass Pro Shop.(Photo by Trina Johnson)

The boys at the shooting range in Bass Pro Shop.(Photo by Trina Johnson)

As we wondered through the store, which also had a restaurant and a bar (opening in a couple of weeks) we found ourselves heading for the hunting section. And there it was, the mother of all hunting sections! I immediately lost David to the archery section and Darik headed to the guns. The entire back wall was lined with guns, side by side, and counters filled with them.

“I want a gun!” Darik screamed. “Please, can I have a gun,” he pleaded. He pressed his face to the glass counter and pointed to which one he wanted. “I want that one.” This was no toy gun. All I saw was the price tag, $7,999.00. “I want a water gun!” “Darik, that is not a water gun, they don’t have water guns at this store.” I tried to explain to him. “But I want a gun,” he cried. We tried to continue walking through the hunting section but Darik burst into tears, fell to his knees and draped himself over the counter, and yelled, “mom, please, I want a gun, I promise I won’t shoot my eye out!” I laughed so hard, and so did all the people standing around us, and the sales people. He was not leaving on his own free will, I had to pick him up and carrying him out of the store on my shoulders. It was quite a scene.

In the car, I put Ky in her car seat and Darik still cried for a gun. Kylee fell asleep before we got out of the parking lot. After about 10 minutes in the car, Darik finally settled down.

Ky was all tuckered out after the excursion in Bass Pro Shop.(Photo by Trina Johnson)

Friday night we found ourselves in the Edaville Christmas Village. An enormous light show with carnival rides, food and a train that took you through the woods and fields to see more light displays.

Edaville Railroad Christmas train(Photo by Trina Johnson)

Santa was stationed there as well. The first time Darik saw Santa this year was at the Bangor Mall and he wouldn’t talk to him. So this time, he wanted to talk to Santa. Oh, great, I can imagine how this will turnout. So we waited in line. When it was our turn, he hopped right up on Santa’s lap. When Santa asked him what he wanted for Christmas, (can you guess what he asked for?) “a gun”. Santa just laughed. I thought he was going to say “you’ll shoot your eye out.” But he didn’t.

Saturday we attended a Christmas party. We all got dressed to the nines in Christmasy attire. What a perfect photo opp. I got some great shots of the kids, one was perfect for our holiday cards.

That night we attended another light display. This one was at La Salette Catholic Church. We walked through the displays and as we headed back to the car, Darik says “Dad, don’t you dare me to stick my tongue on that pole.” We all laughed. The kid is obsessed with this movie! All weekend long references to the movie popped up.

The lights at La Salette.(Photo by Trina Johnson)

Sunday morning arrived and we said our goodbyes. Knowing the ride home was going to be delightful as usual. Surprisingly the kids slept from the time we left until we got to Topsham. They must have been exhausted! We stopped for lunch in Topsham and then continued home.

Monday, Christmas Eve, we had a delightful dinner, made by my husband. Then we opened one gift. They all got Christmas PJ’s. Then we put out Oreo cookies and milk for Santa and celery for Rudolph. I had not wrapped anything yet so after the kids were snug in their beds, we began wrapping presents. We didn’t get to bed until after midnight.

Christmas morning came and the kids got up at 7. They got started with their stockings and a bout half the tree, then we had a big breakfast, also made by my husband. Then finished the tree. Kylee made it through about 5 gifts and decided she had enough things to play with and wouldn’t open anymore. Darik wanted to do everything now… I think he was looking for his gun. He did get a gun. One of our relatives gave him a Spiderman laser gun that lights up and makes noise.

Darik with his Spiderman Laser gun.(Photo by Trina Johnson)

Krysta, eagerly awaited opening the HUGE box that was under the tree with her name on it that we saved for last. What could be in there? So she started opening the box. Another box. Opened that box. Another box. Opened that box. Another box, this one wrapped in its entirety in duct tape. Finally, one more box. An iPOD!!!!! Screams flooded the house. But wait there are more boxes. An iDog, a carrying case and an accessory kit. Needless to say she was more than delighted.

Krysta and her new iPod(Photo by Trina Johnson)

Santa was good to me too. I got a new coffee pot and more villages to put in my set. Oh, I got an iPOD too! Santa must have seen how much fun I was having with Krysta’s before I wrapped it.

So all in all Christmas was a great time with our family. I hope yours was great too.

Happy New Year. I look forward to sharing new tales with you in 2008!

P.S. He was amazed at the size of it, and liked the “crab” on top with the star.

As we headed back to the station he asked me if we were riding “Thomas” tonight. He pictured in his mind that we would be riding “Thomas the Train”. When we arrived back at the station, passengers were getting off the train. “That’s not our train,” he said, “Mom, where’s Thomas”. I tried to explain to him that this train wasn’t Thomas the Train but that it was the Polar Express Train to take us to the North Pole to see Santa and his elves.

Kids (and some adults) were dressed in their pajamas and the girl scouts were singing Christmas carols to get everyone in the Christmas spirit and then we boarded the train.

The storyteller Dave introduced himself and his helper Sue. "What's that I hear?" Dave's phone started ringing. Santa was calling to make sure Dave was on his way with a train-full of boys and girls.

As Dave read the book Polar Express Sue walked up and down the isle and showed guests pictures in the book. As we arrived at the North Pole we saw elves building toys, and elves gathered around the tree and filling the sleigh up high with presents.

Santa came on board and gave each boy and girl a silver bell. “The first gift of Christmas” according to the story.

As the train headed back to the station we all sang Christmas carols. At the station, cookies and hot cocoa were waiting for all.

Darik had such a great time, he really enjoyed the ride. It was just the right length to keep him entertained without getting bored. He was so excited about his gift from Santa, went to bed with his bell.

A+ student and great basketball player

Krysta has earned high marks on her first quarter report card. And some two-word phrases.
Some her words are: outside, want some, more, puckin (pumpkin), appie (apple), all done, tub, hello, ride, sit, dink (drink), baby, blankie, nigh nigh (night night).
We try very hard to correct her and get her to practice the right pronunciation of words.
Perhaps there is an age gap where she learns how to say certain syllables. For instance she could not put "L's" in her words a couple of weeks ago and now she can. She still has trouble with "S's",that are in sissy and Krysta.
And then there's the word we don't want her to learn, the ones her brother and sister teach her, and the ones she may overhear mom and dad blurt out.

Colorful Sunday &picking "puckins"

Sunday was another perfect fall day, such unseasonably warm temps brought me and the kids out to play in the veterans memorial park in Camden and to go pick “puckins”. Ky was practicing her vocabulary and calls the pumpkins “puckins”.

We arrived at Miller Farm in Rockport about 1130 a.m. to find that they don’t open until noon on Sundays. So we headed to Camden so we could get a snack and hang out in the park before they opened. We stopped at French and Brawn for some beverages and we couldn’t leave without a chocolate chip cookie.

Then we headed across the street to the park. The kids ran around and played in the leaves. After a short time there we headed back to the car and went back to Miller Farm.

At Miller Farm, they have a nice patch where you can pick your own pumpkins or you can choose from ones they on display. We visited with the horse named “Champ” then decided to head out to find our pumpkins.

The kids rummaged around for a bit and decided the ones that were already picked would suit us just fine. So back to the barn we went and each one picked out a small pumpkin. We also got some gourds for decorating. The prices ranged from $2-$8 depending on the size. We paid for our pumpkins and gourds, the bill was $5.

They offered free hay rides, so the kids piled onto the wagon. I didn’t go on cause the wagon was filled with hay, which I am severely allergic to.

We headed home and Darik wants to carve his pumpkin already. I think we will do that next weekend. We need dad’s help with that part.

I am glad I have weekends off to spend time like this with the kids. We had a great time and moments like these are so important to them growing up.

To visit Miller Farm: they are located in Rockport on Main Street (just beyond Simonton Corner). Their hours right now are Thursday – Saturday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sundays Noon to 5 p.m. Free hayrides are Saturdays and Sundays from 1 - 4 p.m.

Sisters Krysta and Kylee playing in the park.(Photo by Trina Johnson)

Kylee(Photo by Trina Johnson)

Darik(Photo by Trina Johnson)

The entrance to Miller Farm.(Photo by Trina Johnson)

Kylee tried to pickup every "puckin" in the patch.(Photo by Trina Johnson)

Krysta, Darik and Kylee on the hay ride.(Photo by Trina Johnson)

Fall day in the park

Saturday was such a beautiful fall day. I could not let the day pass without getting the kids outdoors and breathe some fresh air. So around 4 p.m. we headed to Rockland. We went to the boardwalk. We watched the sailboats in the harbor and then the kids went into the pavilion and got a real kick out of their echoing voices. We only walked a short ways down the boardwalk before they got tired of it.

Then we went to the Ocean Street playground. The kids climbed on the playset and went on the swings.

Despite being a nice day, it was still a very seasonal fall. Baby Bug’s hands were froze after just a short time outside.

So we headed home and had the perfect “warming up” dinner, oatmeal and a cup of hot chocolate. The kids were so worn out they were yawning before dinner was over. The fresh air really did them good.

Darik and Ky on the park bench(Photo by Trina Johnson)

Darik and Ky watching the sail boats and seagulls(Photo by Trina Johnson)

Kylee(Photo by Trina Johnson)

Kylee(Photo by Trina Johnson)

got apples?

As I was putting my son to bed one night he asked me if we could make plans to go pick apples. We have never gone before, so I wondered why he would ask to go. So I just laughed and said, sure, hoping that my agreement would satisfy him enough to get him to go to bed without any drama. He is an early riser (530 a.m.) and sure enough the next morning he comes to my room to check and see if had made plans yet to go apple picking. I groggily chuckled, sure bud, we’ll go apple picking.

I hadn’t really made plans yet but the more I thought about it, it did sound like fun and we have never been before. I called a friend of mine and asked if she and her two kids wanted to come along.

So the seven of us piled into my van and headed to Hope Orchards on Route 105 in Hope. They have a “pick your own” Friday through Sunday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. When we arrived the greeter told us to pick out a bag, a small or large paper bag with a handle or a plastic bag, so each kid grabbed a bag. Then she informed us of the rules of the orchard, and which trees were Macintosh or Cortlands (both are in season right now). Then she let us know the price, $1.25 a pound under 20 pounds, or if you pick 20 pounds they are a $1 a pound. I grinned to myself and thought “there’s no way we going to pick 20 pounds of apples.”

So we headed down the first row. The trees aren’t too tall and they have low branches so it was perfect for the kids. Darik got the hang of it quickly and began filling his bag up. Ky on the other hand would not pick an apple off the tree. She would not touch the leaves! It was so funny, as I brought her in to grab the apple she leaned as far as she could away from the tree. So she stuck to the ones on the ground. When she realized that we were picking “appy”, she took a big bite out of one.

We had no trouble filling our bags. We headed back to the entrance so we could pay for our apples. Up on the scale it went, four pounds (that was just Darik’s bag). The next bag, quite a bit larger, and fuller. 21 pounds! Holy cow! There goes my theory that we could pick that many apples. That’s 25 pounds of apples I just came home with! What the heck am I gonna do with 25 pounds of apples! Apple crisp, apple pie, apple pancake, apple butter, apple sauce……. On and on and on…….

My favorite kind of apple is the Macoun (or maybe you call it Macgowan). Those will be in season in a couple of weeks. And did you know Hope Orchards has pears too? I want to try picking some of those next time.

So, this Sunday (Sept. 23), enjoy the first day of autumn. What a great way to start the season with a trip to pick apples!

<embed src='http://www.brightcove.tv/playerswf' bgcolor='#FFFFFF' flashVars='allowFullScreen=true&initVideoId=1199226841&servicesURL=http://www.brightcove.tv&viewerSecureGatewayURL=https://www.brightcove.tv&cdnURL=http://admin.brightcove.com&autoStart=false' She passed in Dec. 2006 and spent the winter with Jean and Paul. Following the 2-day stay in Paul's old stomping grounds of Dublin we spent a couple days with David's brother and his family in Mass. We hung out by the pool and enjoyed the sun and BBQing.

Last weekend we were camping in Medway. Trina's family reunion was held up there and we take an extra couple of days to stay up there. The kids just love camping and overall it was a great time.

KRYSTA

The end of June brought the winning Championship game for Krysta and her softball team. This will be 5 years in a row now. She was also selected for Allstar (travel) team. So her playing has been extended a few weeks. She ended school mid June and will be entering 7th grade in the fall.

DARIK

Darik has been playing golf and baseball in the backyard as usual. He has acquired quite an attitude and mouth recently. He has been very aggressive and hateful to his classmates. We have been trying a reward system and it seems to failing miserably. Punishment of time-out doesn't phase him either. He does seem to act better if he has a goal in site, such as camping or a special outing with mom or dad. We hope this is a short-lived phase.

KY

Ky bug, what can we say... she is happy and cheering as ever, as long as she isn't hungry, or tired, or mom is in site. Her vocabulary has gotten much better. She is now saying "up" "duse" (juice), and when she is done and wants to get "down". She is shaking her head "yes" to whatever you ask her. She knows which shoes she wants to wear and can bring them to you (they even match). And she knows when she wants to go out. She can tell you when she has "poo". They are taught sign language at her daycare, she can sign "eat" and "more". The only thing I cannot get over is her "baby". no matter how hard we try, she is attached to this baby doll she sleeps with. I am a firm believer that children do not need to carry around "pacifier toys". I have managed to keep it to a bed-time item. It drives me crazy that she has a dependence on this doll. When it is bedtime, she stands at the bottom of the stairs and yells "baby!" When she gets up there she grabs hold of it and squeezes the life out of it like it was long lost friend she hasn't seen in years.
The greatest news of all is that her nose has stopped running! YEAH!!!
You will never guess what the solution was....
You will recall that she has had acid reflux issues since she was born. Well, since we cannot find anything that she is allergic to,her pediatrician discussed the possibility of her acid reflux causing a sinus inflammation. So we switched her meds and sure enough, within a day or 2 she had no nasal congestion. What a quirky thing.

Trina has been very busy with her freelance design business. She completed the Belfast downtown group visitor maps and is now working for a T-shirt shop. She designs logos and graphics for imprint on T-shirts. Sports jackets for the school, company T's, and kind of screen printing.

David has been busy artwork as well, this weekend is the fourth of July and he will be working 24 hour shift since all the festivities are in Thomaston.

We have a couple more trips arranged for camping, including a trip near Bangor, and one to Bar Harbor (possible) for Dave and Trina's 7th wedding anniversary.

As the summer progresses I hope to keep everyone updated.

Ride 'em cowgirl!

How many of you had one of these growing up?
