When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.</p> <p>The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.</p> <p>The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous ‘yes.’</p> <p>The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.</p> <p>‘Now,’ said the professor, as the laughter subsided, ‘I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things – family, children, health, friends, and favorite passions – things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, house, and car. The sand is everything else – the small stuff. If you put the sand into the jar first,’ he continued, ‘there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. So… pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out to dinner. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first – the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.’</p> <p>One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented. The professor smiled. ‘I’m glad you asked. My friend asked me while we were enjoying a salsa concert in the park and moving to sound of the music. What?<span style="">  </span>No! I said as were watching some of the people dancing. No, I just listen to the music, let it feel running through my body, look at my partner eyes and let him lead the way.</span></p> <p style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman,serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span></p> <p style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman,serif; font-size: 12pt;">With the whole Victor Garcia’s basic steps of salsa (very, very basic) he made famous on the super bowl and so many dance studios teaching salsa now days, I can’t help feel how I miss salsa.<p />Sure, you’ll say how there are now so many clubs playing salsa music, and salsa classes and even salsa conferences than ever before. And I would certainly agree.<p />But it's NOT the same salsa that I first knew, grew up with and feel in love. Over the years somehow, salsa has lost its soul.<p />When I was in high school and you still can hear on a regular basis many of the great songs from La Fania and many of their groups, I learned how to dance salsa with my friends. It was simple, and it was fun. Grab your partner, feel the beat, and move. That was all you need to do.<p />If you wanted to get fancy, maybe occasionally you and your partner would throw a turn in there. Or you could add that little extra beat with your foot <em>("la patita")</em> before stepping into the next step.<p />But mostly, you wanted to feel the music and enjoy dancing with your partner. You could even chat while dancing. Either way – verbally or nonverbally – salsa was about communicating with your dance partner and enjoying the music.<p />Not so anymore.<p />Salsa has somehow become a competitive sport. How many turns can you do in one beat? What's your signature flash move? Don't forget to throw your arm up in the air with a flourish every time you turn or step away from your partner! And do you dance on 1 or on 2? <p />Communicate with your partner? Enjoy the music? Not a chance.
