It’s July, there is no new iPhone, and the analysts are restless. This time last year, Apple had already announced and begun shipping the iPhone 4 — in fact, every single previous model has been announced in June, save for the first, which was unveiled in January 2007. So, now that the month has come and gone and WWDC with it, what are all of the tech publications out there to do? Make with the rumor stories, naturally — and over the past few weeks, they’ve been coming fast and furious.

DigiTimes has offered a fairly constant stream of sometimes dubious rumors surrounding the device from its stable of supplier contacts, and a recent article from The Wall Street Journal has reopened the floodgates. GigaOm has gone so far as to suggest that the latter may well be a controlled leak from Apple, and certainly it has reignited interest in the belated device.

There’s not a lot in the way consensus here, save for one key detail: Apple appears set to release a new iPhone. That much seems certain. After all, the iPhone remains the company’s biggest money maker, even in this post-iPad world. Last year, of course, we had a slightly better guide ahead of the launch, but this time out, for better or worse, no one at Cupertino has been considerate enough to leave the upcoming handset at a Redwood City bar after a night of partying, so let’s cut through the noise and and piece together a cohesive picture based on the wide assortment of rumors.

Name: at least maybe it’ll have “iPhone” in there somewhere

While Apple has traditionally released the iPhone on a fairly consistent schedule, the new device’s name has always been a bit harder to predict — the iPhone, the iPhone 3G, the iPhone 3GS, the iPhone 4. The two primary candidates here are the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5, both of which are being used mostly interchangeably in rumor stories about the device, though the latter seems the more popular option. The iPhone 4S moniker has been used to refer both to the flagship iPhone 4 successor and a slight revamp to that handset to be released alongside an iPhone 5 at a lower price point, perhaps targeted primarily toward pre-paid customers.

Announcement: if not now, when?

With June come and gone, there’s an “any day now” vibe amongst tech sites. Back in June, BGR cited a source suggesting that an iPhone event in early or mid-August was “quite possible.” Most rumors, however, point to a September event, perhaps coinciding with the iPod unveiling traditionally held that month. Many those September rumors are coming courtesy of supply sources offering up a wide spectrum of shipment numbers — “a few million” at launch and 25 million by year’s end, according to one and 15 million at release, according to another. DigiTimes, a few days before offering up the 15 million number, cited sources suggesting a shipment of “millions” for an October release.

All of which prompts the question of why Apple missed the June cutoff? Production problems seem to be the primary culprit, according to the majority of the rumors we’ve seen. The Wall Street Journal is blaming a problem with the production rate at iPhone assembler, Hon Hai Precision Co., which may delay the phone’s launch even further if not improved. A rep from Hon Hai suggested last month that production issues were due, in part, to the difficulty of installing components in thin touchscreen devices. OmniVision is reportedly having some troubles producing the camera for the upcoming version of the iPhone, as well. Word is that such an issue may jeopardize its relationship with the oft fickle Apple.

Hardware: totally the same, yet completely different

Just how different would a new iPhone be? That, not surprisingly, is the subject of much debate as well. Apple has certainly seen the competition stepping up its game, with handsets like the Droid Bionic, HTC Sensation, and Galaxy S II, so staying on top may mean some serious upgrades in this latest version. That said, a number of outlets are reporting that the new iPhone may be a minor upgrade to the iPhone 4, perhaps with a few small cosmetic changes.

Most sources are pointing to some updates to the device’s design, including an edge-to-edge screen, upsetting bezel diehards everywhere. Many also expect that the latest version of the handset will be both thinner and lighter than its predecessor — not a radical suggestion, by any stretch. One analyst is predicting a return to the curved back that went away with the iPhone 3GS, but that’s nothing compared to the bizarre teardrop design that we saw back in April. A month later, it was reported that Apple had purchased hundreds of glass cutting machines to created an iPhone with a curved glass front.

As for the innards of the thing, The Wall Street Journal was tipped off on the possibility of a full switch from Infineon chips to Qualcomm by one of its endless line of anonymous sources. A camera upgrade seems like a no-brainer, meanwhile, with the megapixel count on the rear of the device getting bumped up to eight, along with a sensor better equipped to handle low-light conditions. Back in June, a dual-LED flash was also added to the list of potential upgrades.

And what about LTE? It’s been floated as a possibility, of course, as has NFC, but these features seem largely the musing of analysts creating a laundry list of ways Apple can remain competitive. Verizon’s own comments haven’t been particularly encouraging in the case of the former. The carrier’s CFO did, however, make mention of a “global device.”

The carriers

AT&T, check. Verizon, check. Both providers are apparently getting the device at the same time. And hey, since the multiple US carrier floodgates have already been opened, why not add Sprint to the list? The wireless provider is being pegged as the next recipient of Apple’s beloved smartphone, with an analyst predicting that it will be happily receiving it before the holidays roll around. The handset is said to be priced the same, but may have a leg up on the competition with lower-priced data offerings. T-Mobile, naturally, has been suggested as a possibility as well, but given recent events, that could soon be rendered moot.

Wildcards

Have you heard the one where Apple releases the next version of the iPad at the same time as the new iPhone? That rumor’s been pretty persistent since before the release of the iPad 2, and hey, it would certainly make help the company get a jump on paying for that giant new spaceship campus the Cupertino City Council seems so excited about.

And what about the iPhone 6? The Wall Street Journal is predicting big things for that one — seemingly lending credence to the rumor that the 2011 release won’t be a major upgrade. On the list of possibilities: inductive charging. Sorry, PowerMat.

Back in Skype’s early days, it was adding users so fast that it liked to boast that it was “the fastest growing, globally available communications tool in history.” Well, by at least one measure (registered users 9 months after launch), mobile video chat service Tango is outpacing Skype. Tango now has 17 million registered users across both Apple and Android devices, only 9 months after it launched. By comparison, Skype celebrated 9 million users on its first birthday back in 2004.

Today, Skype has more than 600 million registered users, so Tango still has a long way to go. But the company wants to reach 100 million users over the next year. (Don’t we all?). If it does that, it will certainly earn the title of fastest growing communications tool.

But even getting to 17 million registered users in less than a year is quite an accomplishment. Tango took four months to get to 8 million, and another five months to add another 9 million. And all on mobile too. Tango is adding 2.5 million registered users per month.

The number of active users is 5.5 million in the last 30 days. Tango’s peer-to-peer service is handling 2.5 million minutes worth of calls every day, and the average call is 4 minutes.

Tango came out just as Apple was spending millions of marketing dollars promoting its own mobile video chat feature, FaceTime. Whereas FaceTime only works between Apple devices, Tango works across platforms on both iOS and Android. That cross-platform compatibility really helped drive growth. Downloads are split 50/50 between the two, and Tango is the No. 6 most popular free social networking app for the iPhone.

Tango already has 56 employees, and is building an engineering team in China, where it is also growing among users. The service is still free, but Tango will introduce premium paid features at some point in the future.

What is incredible about Tango’s growth is that it doesn’t even offer any desktop or Web software yet. Although, this seems like an obvious direction for new products, going mobile first certainly hasn’t hurt the company.

It looks like everybody’s favorite limited social networking and photo-sharing app has finally come to Android. That’s right, Path has announced via its blog that, beginning today, its app will be available in the Android Market. Check it out. But, while the app is officially on Android, this is apparently not a finished product. Path considers Version 1.0 of its Android app to be a public beta, and will be using it to test the Android waters to learn what works and doesn’t work as it ports to a new mobile OS.

This maiden voyage for Android has quite a few features that Path users have become familiar with, but according to Path Co-founder Dave Morin, there’s definitely more to come down the road. But, ‘will Path Android users hang around to find out just what those are?’ that’s the question.

For those unfamiliar with Path, the startup was founded in 2010 by Dave Morin and Dustin Mierau as an alternative approach to the idea of broadly sharable social information, as Path targets sharing among a smaller group of close friends and family. With a 50 friend limit, Path chose to offer no outside sharing features, Facebook, or Twitter integration. The team later amended this a bit by adding a complementary app for Twitter photo sharing called With and has added a host of features, like Stacks, etc.

Since its inception, the startup has grown in fits and starts, but has been on a kick this year, turning down a $100 million acquisition offer from Google and raising an $8.5 million round from Kleiner and Index, and more.

Though the app got its start on iOS and has grown its feature set on Apple’s platform (and has taken its sweet time in expanding beyond iOS), today confirms that there’s not actually any OS bias over at Path. And to be fair, it seems par for the course today for app developers to start with Apple before moving to Android. As is such, Path’s Android v1.0 won’t be offering the full suite of features available on iOS, but it’s a good start.

With Android, users can capture and share photos with the same 50-friend limit, tag moments with people, places, and things, view friends’ moments, and make use Path emoticons to let friends and family know how you feel about their pictures and moments. Users can also take advantage of chat, see when friends have viewed their moments, and publish a few moments to Facebook.

And apparently there’s more to come. As Path’s blog entry indicates, the startup will “continue to iterate and release updates with more features frequently”, and users can expect things to improve “rapidly” as Path continues through beta.

A few quick additional notes: Some users have pointed out that currently the only way to authenticate or sign up for the Android app is through Facebook Connect, and that the Facebook permissions are pretty invasive. While this could scare some users away, Morin told me that, for now, Facebook Connect with remain the primary form of authentication, just as it is on iOS and the web, but the team will be adding email signup to Android in the near future.

Version 1.0 also does not include the ability to delete posts, which is a bummer if you share some of those inappropriate private pics, but Morin said that this feature, too, will be arriving shortly. Good things come to those who wait, right?

Path is currently available for users of Eclair version 2.1 and up.

Onkyo is the latest company to trade Android tablet royalties for access to Microsoft’s patent licensing program. The details of the agreement wasn’t released. This makes Onkyo the third company this week that has signed such an agreement. Velocity Micro and General Dynamic’s Itronix brand joined the club just days ago.

“We are pleased that Onkyo has taken advantage of our patent licensing program for Android devices and has signed this agreement,” said Horacio Gutierrez, corporate vice president and deputy general counsel of Intellectual Property and Licensing at Microsoft. “This agreement and similar agreements recently announced evidence the momentum and success of our licensing program.”

Thanks to an update of Skype’s Android application, you can now make one-to-one video calls over both WiFi and 3G connections. You can download the Skype app from the Android Market or point your browser to Skype.com/m from your phone.

Note that your smartphone needs to be running Android Version 2.3 (or above) and have a front-facing camera. Supported handsets include the HTC Desire S, Sony Ericsson Xperia neo, Sony Ericsson Xperia pro and the Google Nexus S.

This is just the first phase, Skype says, so expect support for more devices soon.

Once installed, you can have video calls from your Android phone with your Skype contacts on iPhone, Mac, Windows PCs and even a number of TVs.

The Skype for Android app has also been given a new lick of paint.

There’s now a new main menu where you can navigate more easily through your contacts, access your Skype profile to change personal details, use the dial pad to make calls and see the balance of your Skype Credit.

A new mood message box at the top of the Skype app menu also enables you to share whatever you’d like to share with your contacts.

Finally, you can now send SMS messages from the Android app.

Neil Stevens, Skype’s vice president and general manager for product and marketing, says approximately 30 million concurrent users log into Skype at any given time and make up to half a million simultaneous video calls (at peak times as of June 2011).

The Background Check App does exactly as you might expect: It pulls data from BeenVerified’s site and allows you to check up on the people you know through name queries or email addresses. Users can check up on their contacts with one click, allowing you to see how many times the person in the cubicle next to you has been arrested. Luckily, I have a spotless record, or else I wouldn’t be writing this. Right, BeenVerified?

When the Background Check App first dropped in 2009, it was downloaded nearly a million times in less then a month. Thanks to this aggressive downloading (and some questions over privacy issues), Apple actually pulled the app from its app store after a few weeks. But, this month, after lengthy conversations with Apple, BeenVerified was able to assuage Apple’s concerns, and has now re-released the app with their blessing. In the first four days, the app was downloaded over 14K times.

As Reputation.com’s Michael Fertik told TechCrunch’s Andrew Keen, the issue of privacy is gearing up to be “the next big thing in the online economy”, and people are becoming are now more willing than ever to pay for online services that keep cookies at bay and protect their web-based reputations. As social media has become ubiquitous, and the Web proliferates, it’s no wonder that our perception of privacy is being categorically altered. Some, would say “threatened”, while others would argue it’s a natural part of our digital evolution.

Regardless of where you come down on that question, a lot of the information on the Web is shady to say the least, and people still want to know that those they’re doing business with, or dating, or interacting with, are trustworthy and not out to do harm. The social web is moving forward at lightning speed, and with services like Airbnb, Match, Craiglist, and umpteen others, the gap between virtual and physical worlds is narrowing. As this is the case, the demand for 3rd party, objective public record information about those we meet on the web is increasing exponentially, especially in cases like, say, who we’re renting our apartments to on Airbnb, and we want this information accessible on-the-go.

Thus, BeenVerified’s mission is to make background checks accessible — and more importantly, affordable — which is why the app is free to download and each user gets one free background check a month that includes criminal, age, and address history. Unfortunately, however, it’s not all free. If users want more than one report a month, additional checks can be purchased through in-app payments for $9.95 a pop.

While BeenVerified has already served over 10 million free background checks and is providing unlimited free reverse phone lookups through its mobile and web app NumberGuru, there are certainly some questions over just how much access there is to personal information and how pervasive it is. Can I really just search for anyone in the U.S. and pull their background info?

Not quite. BeenVerified Director of Communications Danny Canarick told me that most criminal records are stored and maintained at the county level, yet as one might imagine, not all 3,100+ counties in the U.S. have made digital versions of their records available yet. Which is why the company began a “Court Runner” service, which, for a small fee, directs a real-live court runner to go to the local courthouse to pull actual hardcopies of the records and to create a one-off digital version. While this service is currently only available through the BeenVerified site, Canarick says that the company plans to bring it to mobile in the very near future.

Currently, the company’s apps have digital access to criminal convictions in 46 states, and arrest warrant data from portions of 35 states. This data comes directly from the administrative offices of courts, departments of public safety, departments of correction, etc.

And, finally, for those TechCrunch readers out there looking to try this out and educate themselves on public record data, for the next seven days, all in-app background checks will be available for 99 cents. So, readers, check out the Background Check App and let us know what you think.

The next phase of growth for local deals will be mobile. Groupon knows this, and so does Yelp, which today is rolling out Yelp Deals to its iPhone and Android apps. An update to its mobile apps that is getting pushed out today will add a new deals icon to the app. When you click on it you can see a list of nearby Yelp Deals for discounts at restaurants, spas, and other businesses. (These are in addition to Yelp Special Offers and Check-In Offers, which already appear on mobile).

Yelp started offering daily deals at local merchants about a year ago, and it now has deals in over a dozen metro areas, including San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Boston, LA, Phoenix, Seattle, and San Diego. You have to sign up for these deals currently and you get an email when there are new deals, just like with Groupon or LivingSocial.

With Yelp Deals on mobile, you can search for nearby deals when you are walking around, and they are instantly redeemable. You get a redemption code that you can show the merchant right from your mobile phone. This is similar to what Groupon is trying to do with its Groupon Now mobile app, which is only available in a handful of cities (fewer than Yelp Mobile has out of the gate).

Yelp has one big advantage here over Groupon. It’s mobile apps are already very popular. They are used by 4.5 million people a month. Meanwhile, Groupon is trying to spread Groupon Now through deals with other mobile apps, such as Loopt. Yelp also has a large local sales force, much like Groupon, which is the key to getting local merchants to sign up for these deals.

The key is to get liquidity on both sides of the equation: users and deals. Yelp already has the users on mobile. But getting the deals will require a slower roll-out and a lot of phone calls. That is why Yelp Deals are only available in a dozen metro areas, and it’s taken a year to get there. And the deals come out once or twice a week, not every day. With mobile, there is the extra challenge of getting enough deals in dense geographic areas so that the likelihood of seeing a nearby deal when you launch the app is high.

You just need a lot more deals than you do through the current email marketing model, which gives people more time to plan their tris so that they can take advantage of a deal. The mobile model is more impulsive, but it also requires a greater density of deals for it to work.

This is going to be a long race. Yelp and Groupon are among the first to get off the starting line.

Google’s mobile OS is turning into a major cash source as Microsoft convinces more Android OEM makers to hand over royalties concerning some of Microsoft’s patents. A recent report states that Microsoft has made five times more from Android than their own Windows Phone 7 — without building, supporting, or developing a single Android device.

Both Velocity Micro and General Dynamics just entered into such an agreement where both will pay an undisclosed royalty to Microsoft. HTC signed one of these patent-protection deals with Microsoft back in 2010 and reportedly pays Microsoft $5 for each handset it sells.

A new Pew research survey of U.S. adults conducted in May, 2011 shows that ownership of electronic readers such as the Amazon Kindle or The Barnes & Noble Nook is now at 12 percent. The ownership of e-readers doubled from six months prior when it was 6 percent.

The adoption of e-readers continues to outpace tablets such as the iPad and Motorola Xoom. Only 8 percent of respondents said they won a tablet, compared to 5 percent six months earlier. So tablet ownership seems to be growing at a slower pace.

However, the line between an e-reader and tablet is beginning to blur. The Color Nook runs on a version of Android (albeit not as fully functional as the latest tablets). And of course, every tablet now has e-book apps from Kindle, Apple, and others.

Three percent of U.S. adults own both a tablet and an e-reader. (You early adopters will buy anything).

Both tablets and e-readers still trail well behind ownership of other digita devices such as MP3 players (44 percent), DVRs (52 percent), laptops (56 percent), desktops (57 percent), and cell phones (83 percent). This is also the first time in this survey that laptop and desktop ownership reached parity.

I think the last time we talked was three weeks ago? Something like that?

It’s been a little while. But your voice is better.

My voice is better, I can actually talk now.

There’s been a lot that has happened, including WWDC, a billion Facebook leaks, all this other stuff so let’s dive into it. First thing that we’re gonna talk about is actually pretty recent. I wrote a post a few days ago talking about Android and iPhone sales.

And basically why I believe the gist of the post is that Apple was letting Android win, and now it doesn’t want to do that anymore.

This was my post from a year ago, which was very popular and unpopular with some people.

Its polarizing. I basically, and this wasn’t my idea alone. There was an Android developer actually who had written a post saying, “If Verizon would just get the iPhone, no one’s gonna use Android whatsoever.” This was a year ago when he said this. And so I wrote a post basically ripping off of that. And saying, well is that true? What happens when, if and when, Verizon does get the iPhone.

It wasn’t a done deal at the time of course. But, you know, speculation was leading up the fact that it was gonna happen. And sooner or later we all knew it was gonna happen. So, it happened, and now we can revisit it. Cause now we’re about a quarter of the way, a quarter has passed since the Verizon iPhone came out so we have some actual data to back it up.

Just to back track a little bit, when the Verizon iPhone first came out, it seems like the reaction was sort of tepid.

I think that it’s fair, I mean they sold something like 2.2 million or something like that over the first 2 months, something like that. But at the same time people were a little bit concerned about buying it because the anticipation was that the iPhone 5 would be coming out soon, because it’s always come out in the summer.

I mean, it’s always been released in June or July, and that’s not the case this year. But that was hard to know at the time, no one knew for sure, and Apple of course wouldn’t give any guidance to that.

So the point that’s the point of view of your post. You can basically say that there have been, over the last month or two, a handful of reports talking about.

Over the last four months. Since right after the initial launch.

There have been some market reports discussing the market share of Android versus the market share of iPhone, and Android.

In the United States.

In the United States. This is all about United States and that’s actually one of the points of this segment. But in the United States, Android growth has stalled or whatever you wanna call it. It went from like 53% to like 52.

No, no, no, it’s not that high.

Yes, it is.

It depends on the report. In any case, it was doing really well and now the massive growth may have flight for a little while. So you think that this is because that the Verizon iPhone exists, that Android is sort of like, now its dying slowly.

And lets be clear, Android is still ahead. I’m not disputing that.

Can you get that again?

Android is ahead, the whole point is, that there’s no reason they shouldn’t be ahead. They are selling dozen of devices now on all four carriers. A year ago.

So this is why Windows phone is taking off right?

Yeah. But windows phone sucks.

No it doesn’t actually suck, it is pretty good.

But you know, maybe they will do better when they have Nokia on board. They had limited partners, they also didn’t have all the carriers for a while. But anyway, going back to Android. All four carriers, dozens of devices. A year ago the iPhone was on one carrier with basically two devices that you could buy. You could buy the new version or the older version for cheaper of the iPhone. Now, fast forward a year later, two carriers, the two biggest ones in the United States, which are AT&amp;amp;amp;T and Verizon. And we’ve still got the two models of the iPhone. The new one and the iPhone 3Gs, which basically everyone’s buying the iPhone 4 at this point, cause why wouldn’t you. Anticipating the new one’s coming out. There’s no reason why you wouldn’t get the new one. Anyway, so, this is how it stacks up right now. So there’s no reason that Android shouldn’t be outselling the iPhone, by leaps and bounds still, when they have so many more devices and they’re on all the carriers. At the same time the numbers are clearly showing that the iPhone is coming up and two phones are able to compete with dozens of phones. Across all the carriers. Two phone and two carriers, competing with dozens of phones on all the carriers. The numbers indicate that there has been some change in the last couple months that may or may not continue over the course of the next several several quarters.

Right, of course, things can change.

And the other thing, you talk a little bit about people holding off until the new iPhone that they thought may have come out in June, like I was just

Right

But, there was also pent-up demand prior to the launch of the Verizon iPhone.

Of course, of course. But, to your point, there’s much more pent-up demand for the iPhone 5 . When the iPhone 5 launches, and it’s going to be on AT&amp;amp;amp;T and Verizon, same time, hopefully in two colors. Who knows, whatever is going to happen about that. But it’s gonna explode, there’s gonna be this explosion.

He’s getting so excited right now, you don’t understand.

I mean, it just…

I’m a little nervous.

I just want to say that I really do think that there’s going to be a, like, the Android share is going to come back.

This is the downfall of Android, it’s upon us.

No, it’s going to at least happen temporarily.

The green robot is falling.

I don’t think you’ll even dispute that fact, that when the iPhone 5 hits.

I think you’re absolutely, I think the Verizon iPhone, there’s plenty of demand for it, and I do think that when the iPhone 5 comes out and it comes out and it’s on Verizon and AT&amp;amp;amp;T at the same time and possibly other carriers. I absolutely think it will take, it will stall growth.

But do you think Android users will switch over?

Some Android users, definitely will. Some of them wish they weren’t on Android phones anymore.

Like, 60%.

No, and the other thing is, as we previously reported, and has been reported elsewhere, Google has a big new phone that’s going to be coming out later this year. Times will likely coincide with the launch of the new iPhone. A new version of Android coming out, Android 4.0.

Ice cream sandwich.

Yeah. Ice cream sandwich which may or may not be good. I don’t know.

Well supposedly a little bit more like the Honeycomb.

Which frankly I don’t think Honeycomb was all that.

So the selling point though of this new Android device over the iPhone 5 would be the 4G. We don’t know for sure that the iPhone 5 won’t have 4G, but probably not.

If it doesn’t, I think your argument is totally, really gone.

You think people will really care that much about 4G.

I know, I think you made the argument people don’t care about, or someone wrote a post, people don’t really care about 4G. People don’t care bout 4G because they’ve never seen 4G. Right? That’s like saying people don’t care about how fast, if they have broadband because they are used to dial up, because they’ve never seen broadband.

Perfect example, we have the Nexus 4G, its already out there. Its already out there.

Its on Sprint.

I know people who have it, who just turn off 4G because the battery sucks on it…

OK.

…and it’s not everywhere yet so, like, it’s not even worthwhile to have. You and I have Verizon 4G cards, they’re awful.

Well that’s because the Samsung devices are terrible.

But even when they’re at full speed, its not that great.

I think the speed, the numbers prove this, its like 8 to 10 times faster, which is noticeable.

The argument that its not in enough places. Ok, but we’re talking months from now, when this is gonna roll out. And when you’re buying a phone, most people have their phones for years at a time.

Unless you are an Android user and then they come out with the new best phone six months, or three months later.

Exact same argument for every Window’s PC ever and yet people still bought them and still buy them.

Yeah but that was a mistake. Obviously.

Okay.

But what about the battery life. That’s a legitimate thing.

I think they’re obviously working on improving the chip sets, even if the battery isn’t that great and we’ll see, I would, for the option to be able, like in the moments when I really want the high speed data. I’ll go all right, shrug my shoulder’s, hit the little widget which Android has, and say I’ll switch over to 4G and then I switch back.

I think that what we’re getting into now and this kind of leads in to what we’ll talk about next, cause iOS 5 is coming out, and that’s gonna be a big part, obviously the iPhone 5. What we’re getting into now, is the argument of specs versus, the argument of.

I think 4G is a spec people care about.

I don’t think so, I think that if people go to a store, and see the iPhone, and see an Android phone, this one has 4G or i could get all of the iTunes ecosystem or something that you can’t get on the Android. And someone comes along and and runs a commercial showing the two devices side by side when they’re trying to download a webpage. That’s going to be pretty tough.

Have there ever been one of those commercials?

There will be, that’s what I would do.

Can they do that without permission of running those things?

I think so.

Anyway, Coke vs. Pepsi taste testing something like that. Okay

Your welcome marketer people, that’s your commercial right there.

So one of the things, iOS5 was announced of course at WWDC a few weeks back. They have a lot of features that I will admit, are catch up features to Android.

I love the notification bar. Actually, of all the things that i saw, I saw that one and i just started laughing. I actually tweeted a joke, how long until Android copies this notification bar. And of course all people, plenty of people were like, yeah seriously Android sucks. They’re gonna go copy. They’re like no people.

Android has had this for years and to be perfectly honest it looks like Apple’s is executed better, its much prettier.

I mean this is Apple’s MO. Cut copy and paste thing, that wasn’t on the iPhone.

Beautify.

When it comes out, it works well. It works as well as they think they could possibly get it and that’s when they release it.

I’m was actually surprised they didn’t do something more innovative, I thought they could have done what they launched quite a while ago, its not like the idea was new.

Well they wanted to perfect it and it’s going to just work.

I really doubt it took them that long to perfect the skin of Android’s notification bar.

What about, you know, but there’s a few big selling points here, one of them is, yeah, notifications are great and everything, also the ability to sync wirelessly is really nice. And the ability to have your apps downloaded the iCloud stuff is going to be the big selling point. If it works, just works…

Right.

…as Apple says it does. That’s gonna be a huge selling point.

I think you’re totally right. I think Apple’s approach to this is the right approach for most people. I think the notion that, consumers should care about having this drive in the Cloud.

Right.

I mean, it’s all ready an idea that’s hard for most of us to grasp in the first place and then telling them to manage where their files are.

Right. Another place to store my documents? Right.

Assume they understand what this is.

Right.

I think Apple’s approach where, you save something, its on your other devices. I’m sure once in a while, there’s gonna be some issues of conflict resolution, or maybe didn’t sync quite right.

Right.

But for the most part, people never have to think about it.

And I think Google sort of is starting to get that. I mean, I wouldn’t be surprised if they start to tweak their wording a bit on how they’ve been talking about it with Android, and move away from kind of like, talking about kind of a backend, the sausage making of it, and just kind of talk about, oh well your app just shows up there. Because they did talk about that a little bit last year at IO. We haven’t

really seen that too much, we haven’t see that execution. So the key, of course, we haven’t seen how Apple’s going to do it either. It’s all about the execution. And there’s reason to believe that they’re, you know, they’ve been working on this long enough and that’s why they’ve held it back, that they’ll get the execution right. No guarantee that it will be right but I don’t know, I’m pretty bullish on this stuff right now.

Right.

Apple’s the master of front end and Google’s the master of back end and it’s like you’ve got this.

You look at even, Google Docs. You can make the argument with Google Docs, you don’t necessarily have to be thinking about where you’re saving your files, you just go to the site and it’s there.

Right.

But at the same time, it doesn’t feel like a native app.

No, because the tried to replicate what everyone has been doing on Window’s PC’s for all those years to try and convert those users over. And that’s worked to some extent and it’s been good for them but is that really the way of the future, I mean, this is just like a transition period that we’re in, and Google’s good at getting people to understand how it works from a fundamental level, the way that it worked like in Windows, but Apple is trying to do something completely different.

I think above all, what Google really needs to do at this point is buckle down and make an interface that is pleasant, get is get rid of the stupid font in Honeycomb that looks. I complain about this all the time. You look at the Honeycomb tablet, it has a digital clock readout.

Its bad. Its really bad.

In any case, I mean, I just think in going to the honeycomb tablet the Galaxies have, which I don’t know if were actually going to have time to talk about it too much.

Yeah.

I ‘ve been using that for several weeks now and it’s just the device itself is really solid and the browser is good, there’s just so much unpleasantness compared to the iPad.

I mean, the browser is really the only thing that I use it for. Like, when I do, you know, take it out to try and get into it a little bit, it’s like Gmail great, Gmail and the browser. That’s like, those are the two key things for me. Besides that its like, there’s like, there’s no really great apps. There’s a few that’re OK. It’s just like, why would you use that over an iPad?

Exactly, I really think, Google needs to say, we’re not doing new features and whatever the one after ice cream sandwich is. And just make it good, and look nice.

And so I downloaded, I also downloaded, we got it with Honeycomb the regular and then we got 3.1 came a few weeks later.

I downloaded that. I didn’t notice any real difference.

You can now re-size your widgets.

That’s great. That’s a great feature.

And it’s also now not incredibly buggy, it’s just somewhat buggy. It used to be like, you literally it was like fingers crossed, launching this app, is this going to work? Now its better now.

Have you used any of the movie rentals stuff yet?

So that’s the other thing. That’s actually really pissing me off so this videos app that let’s you rent movies.

Right.

It’s only available on the Xoom at this point. Its part of the fact, that the Galaxay tab. IO attendees got it over a month ago, and it’s actually on sale to the general public since earlier this month and as far as I can tell, you can’t get that application, its just not out. It’s stuff like that, there’s always been this argument that Androids are fragmented. “Oh its not fragmented” and other stuff, But now we have applications that are coming out for certain devices that are running similar to this one. Hulu, Netflix even Google’s own videos application.

Wasn’t that the whole point that you could release it on all of these devices all at once?

What do you think, so you sort of like to begin with, I know you didn’t like the web interface but you liked the idea of Google Music because this is the other big area where these two sides are going to compete with one another, because finally got what Apple is going to with iTunes and the Cloud. So, how do you think that compares from what you heard from, iTunes in the cloud,

It doesn’t seem that great.

Is not everything that people thought it was gonna be. Because there is not streaming component to it. You have to download.

Which is sort of ridiculous.

That is a little ridiculous, and i wouldn’t be surprised if that changes later in the year, something like that,
it’s obviously there’s different rights to all that kind of stuff.

So, when I heard what Apple is launching I didn’t think it was, I mean, with no streaming.

At the same time they did get the matches.

Right, so you don’t have to upload your entire…

I mean that’s number one killer feature that you have to have.

People are not going to upload gigabytes of music.

I mean, even if it doesn’t have streaming, provided you have a fast data connection.

Yeah, you can pull out whatever song you want to listen to, whatever. So as far as my experience with Google Music, I’ve been using it on my phone.

And you have actually, all of your music uploaded.

I uploaded all of my music, that wasn’t nearly as painless as you liked to make out. I just left it running in the background for a while, and after like a week, it was done. I think it was probably done after 3 days, but I have more music than most people anyways. As far as how well it works. I use it on my phone all the time, go to the gym.

It does this caching stuff, so it saves songs you’ve already listened to.

Right. There’s some issues if that’s even legal.

Well it’s just sort of like a matter of semantics. They’re storing a file locally, but it’s not like you are being told it’s there. It’s just you don’t have to stream it, again.

Right.

Don’t think about it. But you know that they’re arguing in the background, of course, with the music industry.

Don’t think about it. Don’t think about it. I’m sure the label’s probably, like, wait, what’s the difference between this on that file.

Yeah.

The main thing is though Google still doesn’t have a music store.

Yeah, that’s actually kind of frustrating we’re, like, oh, I don’t know.

At least Amazon has that for what their service is.

Let’s move on to the next topic. Facebook project Spartan which you wrote this story about a week ago. And it is you’ve seen it. I haven’t see it.

Yes I have actually seen it. We’ve been at war now, you know, war.

You’re at war. I just shrug my shoulders and go, like, same old same old.

I’m at war with Facebook PR because they seem to think that when we write something oh, we’re just kind of I heard about this thing and you know it’s like, “I’ve seen the dumbassed project. I know exactly what it is.”

Dumbassed project? Take that, Facebook.

It ‘s not dumbass. It’s smart. This is absolutely what they have to do. And this is my main problem with the way Facebook PR is trying to pitch this. It’s like, we’re not trying to compete with Apple. They’re only saying that because they’re scared shitless of Apple. They are trying to compete with Apple and the thing is they should be trying to compete with Apple because what are they going to do when both Google and Apple are in control of basically the entire mobile ecosystem and they have no offering, contingent on them offering a Facebook phone, which is still a ways away if they do it.

What are they going to do? They have to figure out a way to get onto these phones, because this is really the future of where everything is going.

Right.

The way that they do that is through the browser, through the the mobile browser.

So let’s talk about what it is. So Spartan is.

A distribution model over the mobile browser. And right now they’re targeting iOS, which you can imagine, Android and all the others.

So the idea is that you’ve got an HTML5 application.

Yes.

But it uses Facebook log in and payments.

Yes. It’s basically like, so you know, right now you are on Facebook and you are playing one of the Zynga games or whatever. Right now you can’t do that on mobile. None of the mobile apps will allow you to do that whatsoever. And part of the problem is because they are flash based. So Google as gone to some of these developers and we heard that Zynga is one of the partners and asked them to write some of their games, or at least a demo game or something like that, in HTML5, and they’ve done this. Its basically, you go to the mobile version of Facebook, and there’s a little drop down, and then you have your apps now which you didn’t have before. And you can play these now in the mobile browser. And this is going to be a big, big thing that they are going to be pushing, like, for the rest of this year.

For what it’s worth, I actually heard someone, from someone who saw it and said that most of the apps are pretty bad at this point.

Yeah, I think they are mostly demo apps. I saw one that was very rudimentary. I think it was actually a chess app. I think Facebook made a pirate chess app and that one of the things. I don’t think I actually said anything about that but that is one of the things. The other key point to this though, is not only, so they’re doing this to break app distribution model, or to break it up a little bit. Because right now, Apple and Google and Amazon to some extent, have total control over that. Facebook needs to get their foot in the door, and be ale to offer their apps, which are so important the future of Facebook and so they’re making money and everything like that. The second part is the making money part, Facebook credits will also be a part of this. And this is all done over the web. And this is really the key. Apple can say all the right things. And say, we heard they they are kind of working with them on this a little bit to help them out, to get HTML 5 move away from Flash, get HTML 5 games on the iPhone and that’s great.

But the thing they won’t like is the credit system because that bypasses using the iTunes system. And maybe they don’t care that much, because to be quite honest, they’re not too afraid of it right now because most people are still going to use the native apps versus going to this. But still, that’s Facebook trying to get around and use their own credit system within these games.

I think it’s the same reason why Apple finally relented when you’re talking about the whole subscription model as far as allowing other applications to provide alternative methods.

Yes. Its like they’re worried about something, do t hey really need to be worried about it?

Most users are already being trained, like, you pay using in app payments on Apple, using the native OS stuff. If I was in Apple’s shoes, maybe in a couple years from now if Facebook, if you really have some killer apps on Facebook, and people are firing up their phones rather than firing up their native application. But I think Apple has recognized too, that the browser. Several years from now, we keep hearing about this and we’ll see whether or not it pans out. You often hear that in the future you’re not going to be able to tell the difference between native and web apps.

Right.

And so, Apple probably recognizes that.

I think that they do, and that’s why they’ve done a lot of work on mobile Safari, which Google also uses, of course, for Chrome.

I think that they do recognize it. At the same time, like with some of the stuff they’re doing with iCloud, it just seems like they’re trying to make a new layer of things going on.

It’s called lock in, I think is the word.

Well, yes, it totally is. That’s what companies do.

That’s what Apple does.

Apple’s very good at. Its all about selling hardware from them of course. So this is what they’re trying to push. Pivoting from that slightly to another thing we leaked from Facebook, is their photos, their new photo sharing app. So from what we heard, some of these leaks that we got last week, some of the pictures are actually a little bit old, a totally new photo sharing app that Facebook has never done anything before. And this makes a lot of sense because they are the number one photo site of course across the web, and now they finally gonna take mobile photos seriously.

The photo browsing experience on Android is sort of bleh.

It’s there because the feature had to be there.

Right.

But, it’s just something you do when you’re trying to waste time or whatever. And, I think this Facebook going after the Instagrams, and all those.

You take a quick picture, you can apply a filter, one of the screen shots showed. You can tag a location to it. You tag your friends into it which is big, obviously, because you have all the graphs already right there.

So, you’re able to do that.

And it looks really nice. Whether or not they release this as a standalone app or, more recently, we’ve heard that it will just be within, because it’s an iOS version we saw. It will be within the Facebook app itself. Still, it looks great. I don’t know if it’s the end all, be all Facebook photos killer, but Apple’s photo app will be that.

Right, sure.

Photo stream.

But it’s interesting in the context of Twitter iOS, which is also announced during WWDC. Huge partnership.

That’s such. I mean, Twitter lucked out, it’s probably not luck, but a really big deal.

It’s integrated deeply into the iOS itself. They don’t have the app installed by default, but you have a little button to install it if you want to. And you can just login from the settings screen with your credentials. And then basically any app you download can then use hooks to easily integrate within Twitter.

So, to pull all your followers, and pull the social graphs.

Which basically, it’s sort of like what Facebook Connect. I mean…

Yes.

Everyone’s talking about how Facebook got shunned or whatever by Apple. But this is huge for Twitter, not just because most people are gonna download the Twitter application, but it gives third party developers such a strong incentive to integrate Twitter support in there.

I don’t know who wouldn’t. Its laying out there, right there, easy for them to use. All they need to do is one hook, or whatever it is. However much they wanna use. And they’ll be able to, within their apps, just immediately populate over Twitter. Like, I mean, you could share easily; they have the built-in sharing mechanism right in there.

And, so Facebook Connect has obviously been a really powerful login system.

Right.

And they’ve had sort of a swap between the Facebook app and the other application that’s been there for a while.

Yes. Single sign-on.

Single sign-on, exactly. But I feel like a lot of developers were integrating Facebook, and not necessarily because they needed the social arena.

Yeah. Because they need an easy login, right?

Yes. So now they can do this…

Twitter wins that.

Twitter wins.

So obviously some applications are still going to do Facebook, because there is value in knowing who the friends are, but…

And for populating to Facebook, which is still a huge distribution method. But its gonna be a lot more seamless to do Twitter now, and I can’t imagine that a lot of people won’t use Twitter. Everything, from a cooking app to a game, they’ll all want to use Twitter because it’ll be so easy to integrate. And out there, and a video even, that Facebook was originally going to be a part it looked like iOS 4.

I heard about this well over a year ago, that it was going to be part of iOS4, that obviously didn’t happen.

Right.

So that relationship there with.

So this all ties in a little bit, and what does that mean for the Twitter and iOS relationship. It’s just like it’s all kind of playing into the same thing.

It’ll be exciting.

Yes.

So let’s talk about the last thing. The Chrome books are upon us. We actually just got the notice that we can get the one from IO attendees. But you’ve had one for a few weeks.

Yeah, I’ve had a demo unit from Samsung for a few weeks. It’s, you and I both saw it at the event right after IO. We went to a Samsung event and played around with it and shot some video with it. I wrote an initial reaction post, I think a few days later. It was pretty long, but not a full review, we only played for it for 20 minutes or so. Pretty good, but a lot of the early reviews have been trashing it.

Right.

So I guess the first thing we so we got CR48s and we discussed that back in December.

And we both did not like that.

So you would say your impression of the real Chrome book.

The Samsung Series 5 is much better than the CR48. I mean the hard ware is better, the track pad is a thousand times better. Though still not nearly as good as a Mac book.

I think part of that may just be, not being used the way the acceleration works.

Its not that great. It’s workable though. It actually works. Overall its a lot faster too. Its using an Intel chip finally. So overall, it’s a lot better. But the question is now why should you buy this thing? I mean it’s five hundred dollars for the low end version for consumers.

And the consensus of most of the reviews thus far, have seen to have been that its an ambitions project for Google that may work out in the future. But at this point its something that general consumers probably should shy away from.

Yeah, there are net books out there that run all of Windows and obviously can run Chrome because they do that, and why on earth would you just get a Chrome book if you could do that. I mean, I have my own feeling on that.

I think net books have very little use.

I think they mostly suck across the board. So its like that. I also like the idea of pushing things forward and moving where we don’t need all that crap from Windows.

I think for the consumer, the Chrome book is for the sort of person who needs a laptop. And they’re looking at the 500 dollar cheapest laptop that HP sells, with Windows. They’re actually quite powerful now a days.

But I think that’s the target audience, as opposed to people looking for a super portable device.

I agree that is the target audience, but I mean, they need to make this, we’ve talked about this before. I don’t eve know the target price. At least half of that, 250, 200, something like that.

I think expanding the subscription model.

Yes, subscription seem to make sense. And I think they could do well there in both certain business, cause that’s one of the elements of it, and also in schools. Where they could do that, imagine they strike a deal with a University, and they say, you pay us X amount of money, and we’ll give you these X amount of Chrome books to hand out to your new incoming freshmen. University has the advantage of knowing that all their freshman have a notebook that they are able to bring to class, and they can put courses, or whatever online for it.

But yeah, so it makes since from the subscription perspective, I don’t think a lot of consumers are going to buy this thing, though, on Amazon.

Definitely not.

Amazon.com and BestBuy.com

And even if the price were lower, just actually using the device, so I haven’t spent much time with the newer one. The CR48, the software hasn’t really changed that much. The experience, but as far as like using the applications, I have used the Chrome web store since, on Chrome. And the issue is the application there, they don’t feel like applications. The vast majority don’t feel like links.

They’re links to web apps.

Until we get offline access. That gonna be the big thing.

That’s key. They promised that at IO, they said in the next few months, we’d get full goat, full Google. Cause they depreciated gears which they were using for all that time so that’s gone now. That not like and you don’t even get that anymore. So that is what they need to add, and yeah, when that comes into play, maybe a little better?

It its not just that, I mean, even with the Google apps offline, you’re gonna want all the other stuff offline too. And its gonna be so frustrating.

Have you played Angry Birds yet?

I played it briefly, it didn’t feel like Angry Birds to me.

Right, its funny how much.

Even all these weeks later, they’re still promoting that front and center on the Chrome website.

Its still the big sign. But really, when we’re talking about any application that has to do with productivity, or saving anything. Until you have offline access. And i’m actually wondering, cause Google has been talking about how giving Google apps offline access is a challenging issue.

I’d imagine its gonna be challenging for other developers as well. So i’m curious to see if Google will do something that actually makes it easier for them, to take these web apps and give them offline storage through these, HTML 5 and other systems that they are using in a way that is secure where the developer doesn’t have to be as good as Google is.

I think its going to be rough going for at least, definitely for the next several months. They’re gonna have another version of the Chrome book that comes out, not Samsung, and they have other partners that supposedly they’re working with. But its gonna be rough going. They need to get the price down and they really need something else.

And they need 4G. I wouldn’t touch a Chrome book that doesn’t have 4G.

So it has built in 3G. And that’s also an interesting selling point for people. You get, whatever it is, 200 Mb free a month? Which isn’t very much.

I mean, I think it’s a matter of time until, say Apple’s laptops and Windows laptops start shipping with wireless.

Right, I mean we already see it with iPad. They have all the, you can get the WiFi only version.

So Google can get ahead here, but I don’t think that’s big selling point for too long. But for now, I would not buy a Chrome book that doesn’t have 4G. Cause I fell like 6 months to a year from now you’re gonna be kicking yourself.

Yes, it doesn’t make a lot of sense. Especially with, were gonna get supposedly some new Mac book Air’s. I know they’re in a totally different price point.

That’s for different peole.

But those are gonna be nice.

So I think that does it for this extended and incredibly awesome of OMG/JK, thanks for tuning in.

Yeah, thank you.

This week’s episode of OMG/JK is a long one — the longest yet, in fact, at 30 minutes. Jason and I apologize for going on and on but we had a lot to talk about. It’s been roughly three weeks since we last recorded an episode and a ton of stuff has happened.

And while we don’t even come close to getting through all of it, we do go pretty in-depth on some of the major things: iPhone vs. Android sales, WWDC, iOS 5, iCloud, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Google Music Beta, Facebook’s Project Spartan, dining in hell with Facebook’s PR team, Facebook’s new Photos app, Twitter/iOS, and Chromebooks.

Below find some relevant links to stories we talk about, and enjoy the episode above. A small programming note: since Jason is packing up his things and moving to New York City, this may be the last in-studio episode we do for a while. But hopefully our weekly schedule will continue uninterrupted thanks to the miracle of Skype — assuming that company doesn’t run itself into the ground before the Microsoft deal closes.
