June 23, 2011: Attended the last game of the Mariners vs. Nationals series, a game that the Nats came into with a cool .500 record. Here was their chance to break into a winning record, something they have not done since 2005.

The game went into the 9th tied at 0. Laynce Nix pinched hit for Pitcher Tyler Clippard and hit a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Jerry Hairston, Jr. The Nats won 1-0, swept the Mariners, won their 11th game out of their last 12, and moved into 1 game above .500.

But today's celebration was cut extremely short when Nationals’ Manager, Jim Riggleman, announced he was resigning immediately. It is always sad to see a successful manager resign, especially after a big win, but this may be a blessing in disguise.

The Nationals have regained their ability to play hard for an entire game and this fighting spirit will continue to serve them well. And with Riggleman's poisonous displeasure with his contract situation removed from the clubhouse, I predict they will make it into the 2011 playoffs. The Nationals have solid coaching and although bench coach John McLaren has been named the interim manager, a solid leader like their 3rd Base Coach, Bo Porter, who has been recently mentioned as a skipper for the Marlins, would clearly be a top choice to step into the Nationals’ Manager position.

At the end, hopefully neither Porter nor Riggleman end up with the Marlins at the start of the 2012 season when they debut their new ballpark.

2011 Father's Day weekend at Nats Park, Orioles vs. Nationals (June 18 & 19)

June 18 & 19, 2011: What's better than a baseball game on Father's Day? Spending the Father’s Day weekend with your daughter at the ballpark.

Sofia and I spent Saturday and Sunday (mom joined us for the Father's Day game) at Nats Park to watch the Beltway Series. We had hoped to see the Nationals sweep the Orioles, but rather saw them split the games we attended.

As a father it is amazing to watch your daughter grow up. Sofia's happy attitude is contagious, but with the good comes the challenges. The Nationals are known for their challenges, but this season they have experienced some success. They have kept their record at nearly .500, something they have not done this late into the

season since their inaugural season, and we hoped to see them reach .500 in the two games we attended.

During Saturday's game the Orioles took an early lead with Adam Jones' homer in the 1st inning, but the Nationals’ recently returned Ryan Zimmerman responded by tying the game with a homer of his own later that inning. From there the Nats took the lead and took the second game of the series with a 4-2 win.

Sunday, Father's Day, the Nationals had a chance to reach .500. We arrived at the ballpark as Sofia snoozed in her stroller. We had hoped this would be a much-needed nap and would result in her being in a good mood for the game.

As Sofia napped we snuck in a few photo ops with the Racing President (George, Tom, Abe and the lovable Teddy), something that would never have occurred with her awake, she's scared of them and who can blame her for being scared of a politician.

Like yesterday the Orioles took a quick lead in the second inning as a result of yesterday's Player of the Game, Ryan Zimmerman, error. Seems his being out for most of the early season has finally caught up with him. I would like to believe that the O's early lead upset Sofia. She was suddenly in a foul mood and mom hoped that food would help calm her down. As mom went to get some hot dogs, I struggled to sooth Sofia. We sat above the O's bullpen and maybe this was Sofia's way of communicating her discontent at the Orioles lead, but O's pitcher Koji Uehara wanted to help me out. As one father to another, Koji tossed a ball up to us, but not even

this act of kindness could help. Sofia rejected the ball, but it didn't go to waste, we gave it to the father sitting next to us who gave it to his son and told him it was the first ball he had ever caught at a ballpark.
As a blessing from the sky, it began to rain. The rain washed the tears off Sofia’s face as I quickly pulled out our umbrella. Sofia smiled, reached for the umbrella’s handle and twirled it like Mary Poppins. The rain stopped and mom returned with lunch. Sofia's attitude had changed. She entertained the fans around us and danced with dad to "Boogey Shoes" that landed her on the jumbo-tron.
Although I write about my challenging moment with Sofia at the game, but my Father’s Day at Nationals Park with my family was certainly the highlight of the day. As for the Nationals, they may have lost the game to the Orioles 4-7, but they took two out of the three games of the Beltway Series.

May 1, 2011- During the past few weeks three (3) MLB players have taken paternity leave to be with their wives during the amazing moment - the birth of their children. They have received some criticism about missing a few days of work, or shall I say a few games of baseball, but I can only guess that those critics are not fathers.

One of the players who recently took paternity leave hits close to home, Washington NationalsShort Stop, Ian Desmond. Not only is Ian a hometown favorite, but Sofia and I met him late last year when the Nationals released their new uniforms. Ian took special attention of his young fan and now we know why, he was a dad to be. To know that Nats Coach, Jim Riggleman, endorses the League’s implementation of paternity leave is encouraging. To know that Ian was with his wife when their baby boy was born on April 26, 2011, priceless!

Today was overcast, but a few clouds and some sprinkles were not going to keep Sofia and I from a day at the ballpark. Sofia was decked out in her pink in support of the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer that ended in Washington, DC today.

Getting out to the ballpark is always great, but today’s Giants vs. Nats game was special. Sofia and I sat in the Right Field stands right above the newly acquired Jason Werth. This brought memories from our June 25, 2009, 30 Ballparks and a Baby stop at Tropicana Field when we watched a rematch of the 2008 World Series, the Rays and the Phillies. Sitting right behind us that night was a young die-hard Rays’ fan that was still upset at the Phillies beating the Rays in the World Series. This young fan had perfected his baseball “chatter” and his target that night, Jason Werth. He told Jason “here’s a quarter, go get yourself a cup of coffee cause it’s not as if you are doing anything else” and would quickly follow with “hope you enjoy last years ring because it’s going to be your last”. Punchline after punchline: “Must be hot under that hat, your hair has turned red”. I asked the young fan where he learned his chatter and he quickly replied, “my dad!”, who sat at his side with a sense of pride.

That day in Tampa we joined the Rays fans to root against Jason and the Phillies, but today was a completely different day. Today we cheered for Jason and the Nats who beat the Giants 5-2, but the only part of the game that really mattered was enjoying my time with Sofia and, even though it rained, the day shined.

Baltimore, MD (April 4, 2011) - Orioles 2011 Opening Day

Sofia just turned two a couple of months ago and today she attended to her first MLB Opening Day.

I knew this Opening Day experience was going to be unique. The weather in DC has finally started to warm up after some crazy spring snow fell last week. Sofia has been begging to go the park every day. This morning I asked her if she meant to say the baseball park and she confirmed in spanish that yes she wanted to visit the baseball park: "parque...parque de beisbol!" (We are really trying to make her bilingual).

As expected, Baltimore was mobbed with Orioles fans. Who can blame them? Their 3-0 start is the best since 1997. Could this be a new Baltimore Orioles team?

The Orioles got on the score board in the 2nd inning with Matt Wieters stealing home on Porcello's wild pitch. The Tigers responded by tying it up in the 3rd.

Sofia was excited to be back in the ballpark. She hammed it up for the fans in the stands and cheered the O's on as she bounced from step to step out if her seat.

By the 4th inning Sofia was ready for a change of atmosphere. We headed to the Orioles' kiddie area (which honestly leaves much to be desired in comparison to the carnival rides at the Detroit Tigers' Comerica Field) where she discovered a small moon bounce where she spent most of the 5th inning which featured Brian Roberts nailing a three-run homer to the right field stands where we were seated. As the inning finished up, Wieters singled to add another run giving the Orioles a 5-1 lead that they would hold for the rest of the game.

Luckily for dad, the park had strategically placed a monitor in perfect view by the moon bounce so I did not miss a single play.

Back in the day I would have been frustrated missing the best part of the game, but today I confirmed a new source of enjoyment at the ballpark: spending time watching Sofia enjoy a baseball game in her unique way as a two-year-old little girl.

The game was not a complete loss. We returned to our seats in time for "God Bless America", "Take Me Out to the Ballgame", and "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" (the Orioles 7th inning staple). Sofia sang and danced during the 7th inning stretch and we watch the Orioles beat the Tigers 5-1 and taking their record to 4-0. Much better than the last time we were there to finish up our "30 Ballparks and a Baby" tour in 2009.

I don't remember my first Opening Day, but will certainly always remember this one with my daughter.

Washington, DC (March 31, 2011) - Washington Nationals Opening Day: Braves vs. Nationals

The 2011 MLB Opening Day finally arrived, but the Washington, DC weather did not get the memo. The day started off with sprinkles and turned into a balmy 41 degrees. Sofia was looking forward to a little baseball, but because of a cold and an un-cooperating mother nature, her Opening Day will be delayed. But the 30 Ballparks and a Baby family was not shutout. Dad weathered the storm and got unprecedented access to the pregame ceremonies.

Upon arrival at Nationals Park, dad hit the field just in time to catch the Braves take batting practice. It was like “déjà vu all over again” from the Turner Field visit in 2009 (http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=119552&id=122793954504).

The pregame ceremonies began with the induction of legendary sportscaster James Brown, former Redskin and radio personality Brian Mitchell, and ½ of PTI Michael Wilbon, among others, into the Washington DC Hall of Fame. The induction was followed with roaring cheers as Nats fan favorite, Ryan Zimmerman, received his 2010 Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger award.

In contrast to Zimmerman’s cheers, recently inaugurated DC Mayor, Vincent Gray, received deafening boo’s as he kicked off the Nationals’ 2011 season with “Play Ball”. With the response that Mayor Gray received, he is going to have a tough four years and I hope his self-inflicted misfortunes are not those of the Nationals.

The Nationals hit the field behind their off-season prize, Jason Werth, and their two veterans, Livan Hernandez and Ivan “Pudge” Rodriquez. The 36-year old Livan pitched his 4th Opening Day for the Nationals, his 9th career Opening Day. Pudge posted his 2,500 career game and 20th consecutive Opening Day start.

Werth, Herndandez, Pudge and the rest of the Nationals played a great game. Jason Werth got on base in his first at bat as a National, but the Braves just had a tad more juice on this day. The Braves scored early with a Brian McCann single that scored future Hall of Famer Chipper Jones in the first inning and in the second inning, Jason Heyward hit a solo homer. The 39,055 fans in attendance watched the Nationals lose 2-0, but from Coach Riggleman down, everybody agreed that the Nationals played exceptionally well.

With this competitive team that was assembled in the off-season and haven watch their Opening Day, the Nationals should have a solid 2011 Season.

MLB, Keep the 2011 All Star Game in Arizona

Whether you agree with it or not, politics are the very fabric of our lives. Unfortunately politics affects every aspect of our lives and not even MLB can escape this reality.

MLB is being dragged into the Arizona immigration debate and, therefore, must take a stance to protect its interests in Arizona. The reality includes the Diamondbacks and Spring Training in Arizona. Another major burning political issue is whether or not Arizona polticians will approve public funding for a new spring training ballpark for the Cubs in Mesa City, Arizona. Will Arizona's politicians take the chance of losing the Cubs to Florida?

MLB has already invested in Arizona to host the 2011 All-Star game and there is no reason they should make any premature actions that will cost the league. For all we know Arizona's immigration law may be overturned or deemed unconstitutional by the time the 2011 All-Star game comes around. MLB's decision to move the 2011 All-Star game from Arizona is a double-edged sword. MLB is in the business of making money by increasing fans and its actions would upset individuals on both sides of the immigration debate.

The decision to host the 2011 All-Star game was made prior to the passing of Arizona's SB 1070 and MLB must stay the course!

Sunday, June 6, 2010 - 4 days until take off

It's Sunday, June 6 and the 2010 FIFA World Cup starts in 4 days. Our flight from DC to South Africa leaves on Thursday and there is still so much to do. Still need to pack and although it is summer here in DC, can't forget that South Africa is in the Southern Hemisphere and it will get chilly down there. Note to self, shorts are not a good idea; it may get below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. In addition to packing need to read "How Soccer Explains the World" by Franklin Foer and ESPN's World Cup Companion.

So what will this adventure to South Africa entail? Well, the trip will include 3 World Cup Games, Meetings with World Cup Sponsors and a couple of tours.

1. 3 Games: England vs. USA (Rustenburg - Royal Bafokeng Stadium)

Slovenia vs. USA (Johannesburg - Ellis Park Stadium)

A third game yet to be determined.

2. Meetings with Executives from FIFA World Cup SA, Gatorade, James Grant Sports, Octagon SA, Nike, NBA International, Visa and we hope to add meetings with International Broadcast Centre (IBC), Coca Cola, Adidas and Sony

3. Tours to the Pilaneseburg Game Reserve and to the city of Soweto and its Apartheid Museum. Soweto played an important part in the struggle against Apartheid, and

So what do you pack? My suggestion: non-wrinkle slacks, non-wrinkle shirts and casual dress shoes for the meetings; jean/kakis, polos, and sneakers for the games; and, for everyday, a warm jacket, socks and underwear.

Don't forget toiletries, converters, camera and electronics to stay connected.

Well lots of time and little to do...wait, scratch that and reverse it! Off to Pack and Read!

The World Cup starts in about two (2) weeks and will be played from June 11 to July 11, 2010.

2009 and Welcome 2010 MLB Season

Dear Baseball Fans,

Baseball is finally in the air, but it feels like just yesterday that the New York Yankees inaugurated their new Yankee Stadium and then beat the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2009 World Series. Yankee Stadium was not the only new ballpark to open last season, or in New York for that matter. Citi Field, home of the New York Mets, also opened its doors.

The Florida Marlins and the Minnesota Twins also had some exciting ballpark activity in 2009.

On July 18, 2009, the Marlins finally broke ground on their long awaited new ballpark. The new Marlins Ballpark is scheduled to open by Opening Day 2012, and you can watch its progress on the Marlins New Ballpark webcam. The Marlins current home also changed its names from Dolphin Stadium to Land Shark Stadium. One would have thought that one name change would be enough, but in January 2010, the stadium was renamed, yet again, to Sun Life Stadium.

On October 11, 2009, the Twins played their last game in the Hubert Humphrey Metrodome. Unfortunately, their last game was a loss to the New York Yankees as they swept the American League Divisional Series. During this last game the temperature inside the dome was a cool 73 degrees while outside it was well below freezing. This will definitely add a challenge for late season games in the Twins new home; Target Field has been built without a roof, not even a retractable one.

The Twins will open Target Field with two exhibition games against the St. Louis Cardinals on April 2-3, 2010 and the Inaugural Season Home Opener at Target Field will be on Monday, April 12, 2010, against the Boston Red Sox. We wish the Twins the best of luck with their Target Field Inaugural Season!

The 2010 MLB Season, as always, will be exciting and MLB hopes that attendances will reflect our slowly improving economy. In 2009 MLB welcomed over 73 million fans, the fifth-highest total in the history.

Baseball fans, families and “Ballpark Chasers” are all ready to head out to the parks for some fun. So, let’s get ready for the boys of summer and have a great and safe 2010 MLB Season!

Sofia dials up two wins for the Nationals

March 28, 2010 - The Nationals have had a tough time getting wins during this 2010 Spring Training; prior to March 20, 2010 their record was 3-13. We went to the Nationals play two games, and I don’t know what it was, maybe Sofia’s call, but they won both games.

On Sunday, March 21, 2010, we went to Jupiter, Florida to visit the Roger Dean Stadium, home of the Florida Marlins who hosted the Washington Nationals. We were torn on whom to root for since we are originally from South Florida but now the Nationals are our home team.

The Nationals came into this game ready to win! One of our favorite former Marlins and now Nationals, Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez, was in the line-up. First Baseman, Chris Duncan, who since this game has been cut, started the game with a solid double that put the Nats on the board first. The 6^th inning was hot, and both the Nats and the Marlins went on a tear scoring four (4) runs each. Although the Nationals escaped the inning still in the lead, 7-6, the old Nats started to appear, as they seemed to lose focus on the game. Luckily, at the end, the Nationals, with their solid hitting, beat the Marlins, 9-7, adding another win to their poor Spring Training record. The next day, March 22, 2010, we drove north to the Space Coast Stadium in Veira Beach to see the Nationals take on the Mets. The Nationals picked up where they left off the day before. In the first inning Ryan Zimmerman hit a solo homer and then in the second inning Josh Willingham homered. Zimmerman was not done; he homered again in the 5^th inning giving the Nationals a solid lead that they would hold to beat the Mets 7-5. This weekend the Nationals picked up two wins to improve their record to 5-13. The one positive thing for the Nationals and their poor Spring Training is that they have had the opportunity to get a good look at their players. Remember last years Spring Training; the Nationals had a much better record 15-17, although still under .500, they ended up losing over 100 games. Hopefully this year, with such a poor Spring Training record they will be able to improve their regular season play, win some more games and prevent having the league’s worst record

Washington Nationals’ Space Coast Stadium visit, March 21, 2010

March 25, 2010 - On Monday, March 21, 2010, we had the opportunity to meet with the Nationals Space Coast Stadium located in Viera, Florida. The Mets were in town to play the Nationals and, although the Nats have had a tough Spring Training, they were coming off a win over the Marlins, a game we also attended. At the end the Nationals beat the Mets 7-5 and we had the opportunity to see two back-to-back Nationals’ wins.

Space Coast Stadium:

Located in Viera (Melbourne), Florida and built in 1993.

Spring Training home of the Washington Nationals and “regular season facility for the Brevard County Manatees, the Florida State League affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.”

The complex includes several practice fields on the property itself.

Once Spring Training is done, the Stadium is used by the Manatees and also hosts the Gulf Coast League (GCL) Nationals and other baseball games.

The Climatic Tiki Bar and Nats Tiki:

In left field there is a Tiki Bar and picnic area, which is sponsored by Climatic. Island Mike’s built the Tiki Bar and donated a “Tiki” to the Nationals. The Tiki has been named

“Nats Tiki” and is the center piece of the Florida Nationals marketing campaign as they use him in the community, parade him throughout the stadium for games and use him to reach out to kids and fans a like. In February of 2010 the Florida Nationals created the “Nats Tiki” Facebook page and now have over 600 fans. The experience at Space Coast Stadium was a great one and I am confident that I will return in the future to watch Nationals play again.

“Baseball’s Unknown Angel” by Randall B. Hamel

On June 26, 2009, during our 30 Ballpark Tour, we visited Tropicana Stadium in St. Petersburg, Florida. During this stop we met a very special young man, Nick Hamel. Nick is phenomenal! As you can see, Nick suffers from Spina Bifida and is confined to a wheelchair, but this doesn’t stop him from getting out to the ballpark. In fact, when he is not at the ballpark he is busy calling ballplayers across the country and catching up with them.

Now, his father, Randy Hamel has just released “Baseball’s Unknown Angel,” an inspirational book about Nick. Randy says that “this is a story of one child faced with incredible odds, but with the help of Major League Baseball and faith, not only persevered but influenced the lives of so many by his extraordinary acts of kindness and sincerity.” Nick definitely touched our lives!

Yesterday I got my copy of “Baseball’s Unknown Angel” and know that it will be an inspirational book. I whole-heartedly recommend this book to everyone.

POSTSEASON- Back to Normalcy?

Today we took Sofia to her first children's birthday party. After three months on the road, I feel as though our lives are starting to come back to normal. The piles of mail have been taken care of, laundry is not quite there yet, there are boxes to be put away and an auction event to plan. Still unemployed, our sense of normalcy is questionable. We are making the best of it. The experience of spending this summer together, gave us a new perspective on our lives and who we are. Untapped skills were discovered, new people were met and the possibilities of the next step are endless. With my skills in PR and journalism and Roberto's skills in operations, PR and administration I believe we will be OK. For those out there who are on the same boat, be strong and continue to shape your skills and network, network, network. Make use of the obligatory "time off" to better yourself and open the door to places you never thought of looking. You never know where your next job lies. This is the summer that changed us as a family and when visions of cracker jacks and seventh inning stretches start dancing in my head, I say "there's always postseason." that's my new normal.

You love your team, but did we love your ballpark?

Our tour consisted of experiencing each ballpark that we visited. All thirty of them. During our travels we wrote notes of each ballpark, including the price of parking, architecture, food, the mascot even the kiddie section. Now that the playoffs are in full swing we recount what we liked about the parks of the condenters in the National and American division today.

LAD @ STL play tonight at 6:07 pm in St. Louis, but how do their ballparks rank to us?

Ballpark #15- July 26, 2009-(Los Angeles, CA)- Dodger Stadium is a historic landmark in Southern California located in the Chavez Ravine.This ballpark offers the best views in baseball. To the south you can see downtown L.A. and to the north and east fans have a beautiful vista of hilly terrain and lush vegetation. A sign up on the hill says “THINK BLUE” after all, this is L.A. and they like to put signs on hills.

Ballpark #5- June 1, 2009 (St. Louis, MO)- Busch Stadium is alot of fun. No doubt Cardinals fans love their team! This evening game was packed. The panoramic view of the St. Louis skyline from the stadium is impressive, especially at night. This one is a very modern stadium, but they still have the old scoreboard on display, which is cool. This is home of the All-Star Game this year and you can feel the energy building up-- everything has the All-Star Game insignia on it--Albert Pujols played that evening and gave the fans quite a scare when he slid into second base and hurt himself. Luckily, it wasn't too bad and he continued to play. The Cardinals lost 3-5 to the Reds. What made this game memorable: We had great seats, right behind the visitors dugout on the third-base line.

Ballpark #29- September 29, 2009- (Philadelphia, PA)- Citizens Bank Park is beautifully crafted. An open outfield provides a fantastic view of the Philly skyline and the open-air walk-around concourses give you uninterrupted view of the park for when you decide to get up to grab a Philly cheesesteak sub! The "Phanatic Phunzone" located by the first base gate is perfect for little kids 8 and under, like Sofia, and the "Phanatic Attic" houses an 8-foot fiberglass Phanatic. Guest services does give out a beautiful "First visit to the Park" certificate. Back on the field. Citizens Park features a bowl-style seating which means you are basically 23 feet below street level.

Ballpark #20- August 13, 2009- (Denver, CO)- Stormy weather rocked Coors Field today, but not enough to deter the Rockies from delivering a win against the Pirates 10-1. Maybe it had something to do with the altitude or the effect thin air has on pitching (More). Opened in 1995, this ballpark is one of the nicer ones. Located in lower downtown Denver, an area with a mix of apartment residences, restaurants and small businesses. We parked in a stadium lot for $10. The stadium is made of red brick and dark green wrought iron and has a great view of the Rocky Mountains in the first base and right field areas. the center field bleacher section is informally called "the Rockpile". The purple seats in the stadium put you at a mile high in the air.

Our tour of 30 ballparks with our baby Sofia ended on October 2, 2009. Our return home was bitter-sweet. Sure its great to sleep in your own bed, but the memories of the tour of a lifetime will forever remain as an important part of the history of our family. This creates a bit of nostalgia. Our 90 day-plus road-trip saw us through the most beautiful scenery our country has to offer. How else can you watch a meteor shower in the Utah Arches, literally walk on glass over the Grand Canyon cliffs, go fishing for Salmon in Seattle all while taking in the American past time at each home team turf? OK. It wasn't all fun and games. This trip was work. From the planning to the posting of journals to the driving, diaper changes, feedings, while conducting interviews with the media and potential employers, our tour was a journey of self-discovery. Here you had three people, mom, dad and a 4-month old taking on a trip of a lifetime. For us it was about discovering each other and spending every waking moment with our new baby. Could we survive as a couple spending 24/7 together? We did it!
