30God.com is going to take a rest for a while. On Sunday, September 4, 2011 we will launch WhatIsFaith.co as a replacement. What is Faith will begin a year long study into “faith,” and into the art of daily video devotionals. We will use the wonderful devotional by John Stott, “Through the Bible, Through the Year”. It will also be a tribute to this wonderful Christian man who went home after ninety years this past month.
God’s wisdom is always a gift. What do we do with it? Put it in a display cabinet for everyone to see? Or embrace it, making it a part of who we are?
Proverbs 4:7-9 Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding. 8 Exalt her, and she will promote you; She will bring you honor, when you embrace her. 9 She will place on your head an ornament of grace; A crown of glory she will deliver to you.”
How do I move for focusing on my hardships to focusing on the Lord being with me and using me in his big plan?
Genesis 39:21-23 But the LORD was with Joseph and showed him mercy, and He gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison. 22 And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners who were in the prison; whatever they did there, it was his doing. 23 The keeper of the prison did not look into anything that was under Joseph’s authority,[a] because the LORD was with him; and whatever he did, the LORD made it prosper.
The title may be offensive to you. How could God’s word ever not work? Well, sometimes He doesn’t want it to. WHAT????
Matthew 13:10-13 And the disciples came and said to Him, “Why do You speak to them in parables?” 11 He answered and said to them, “Because it has been given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. 12 For whoever has, to him more will be given, and he will have abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. 13 Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.
So we get the blessing, and then we can coast? It is what most of us do. Jacob followed that comfortable path and things went so bad.
Genesis 33:15-17 And Esau said, “Now let me leave with you some of the people who are with me.” But he said, “What need is there? Let me find favor in the sight of my lord.” 16 So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir. 17 And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, built himself a house, and made booths for his livestock. Therefore the name of the place is called Succoth.
“A coward dies a thousand deaths, the valiant dies but one.” (“Julius Caesar,” William Shakespeare) How is this antithetical to the gospel?
Genesis 32:26-28 And He said, “Let Me go, for the day breaks.” But he said, “I will not let You go unless You bless me!” So He said to him, “What is your name?” He said, “Jacob.” And He said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel;[a] for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed.”
In an arid land a well is the difference between life and death. Perhaps it is no different today even with city water.
Genesis 29:1-3 So Jacob went on his journey and came to the land of the people of the East. 2 And he looked, and saw a well in the field; and behold, there were three flocks of sheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks. A large stone was on the well’s mouth. 3 Now all the flocks would be gathered there; and they would roll the stone from the well’s mouth, water the sheep, and put the stone back in its place on the well’s mouth.
Mom always said that standing up straight was good posture, but the closer I am to God the more I have learned about bad posture. The difference between entitlement and blessing is in how one stands.
Genesis 27:36 And Esau said, “Is he not rightly named Jacob? For he has supplanted me these two times. He took away my birthright, and now look, he has taken away my blessing!” And he said, “Have you not reserved a blessing for me?”
Early in life I wanted people to let go of what was mine. No I come to realize that I need to let go of what I think is mine.
Proverbs 3:9-10 Honor the LORD with your possessions, And with the firstfruits of all your increase; So your barns will be filled with plenty, And your vats will overflow with new wine.
