Tonight: THE FINALE! Haunted places in the UK, some commentary on Marvel Zombies, and...well, you know what time it is.

HistoryExtra out of the UK is dabbling in High Weirdness to get hits. And, well, we’re a sucker for such things. Especially when told with breathless credulity. Here’s their top five haunted spots in the UK.

Well, if you haven’t watched Marvel Zombies yet, steer clear. Because in this vid, spoilers lurk. But this is a great audio commentary on a sequence from the show with director Bryan Andrews and scribe Zeb Wells.

Well, for eighteen years this has been our final film: the original Night of the Living Dead. This time around, though, for the first time we’re including it with a different musical score. This one is provided by Canadian group Yamantaka // Sonic Titan. You can snag a copy for yourself on their Bandcamp. I found it after playing one of their tracks on the radio show.

As always, folks…thanks for coming out to party with us. And remember: everyday is Halloween if you want it badly enough.

32 Days of Halloween XVIII, Day 31

While delving to try and find out who was doing this crazy Evil Popeye voice on this song (under a different title), I discovered Salty Holmes and his wife (at the time), Mattie (real name Jean Chapel). Here they are performing “The Ghost Song” at the Opry in 1955.

I’ve said more people on this side of the pond should watch the UK (and original) version of Antiques Roadshow. So here’s a perfectly good Halloweeny reason to: creepy antique dolls. And this is only a sampler plate. Most of the dolls we see on the show are creepy as hell.

For tonight’s feature, it’s some Hammer Horror from 1963. Kiss of the Vampire. It’s directed by Don Sharp (Rasputin, the Mad Monk) and written by John Elder (The Phantom of the Opera from 1962). It’s never a good idea to run out of gas (or have car trouble of any sort, really) in a remote village. Did that ever turn out to be a good idea in a horror movie? I guess if you thought you were in a travel documentary or something, maybe you wouldn’t see it coming. Anyway, as everyone knows, any small village in the UK has some sort of cult hiding in it. And they just wait for people with car trouble. It Is Known. Enjoy.

32 Days of Halloween XVIII, Day 30

I wish we had more of this and it was a little less jumpy-around but regardless: it’s that time Herman Munster (Fred Gwynne) showed up on Red Skelton’s show:

For tonight’s feature, we go to 1967 and Eye of the Devil! Directed by J. Lee Thompson (the original Cape Fear) and stars many familiar names/faces: Deborah Kerr (The Innocents), David Niven (Wuthering Heights 1939), Donald Pleasence, Edward Mulhare (TV’s Knight Rider), and Flora Robson (The Beast in the Cellar). It was Sharon Tate’s theatrical film debut. A family estate, a family inheritance, and centuries of intrigue and weird rituals all comes to a boil in this creepy gumbo. (Well, that sentence almost worked.) Enjoy.

Tonight: mourning paraphernalia, candy behind the scenes, and then...THE NIGHT WALKER!

32 Days of Halloween XVIII, Day 29

First up, the Victoria & Albert Museum usually posts a pretty great Halloweeny vid each year and here’s this year’s. Mourning paraphernalia. Including jewelry and including items made of and involving the hair of the deceased. If you’ve watched any of Antiques Roadshow UK (which you should), you wouldn’t be surprised by this. Stuff like that shows up frequently. And yeah, it’s a bit weird, but when you consider you didn’t have photography when that started and people were worried they’d forget their loved ones…makes sense. I mean…I have a camera attached to my phone and my phone is surgically attached to my person and I can’t remember a damn thing. So.

Well, we’ve hit one of the cornerstones of the season: the morbid and macabre. Now it’s time for one of the others: candy. Ever wondered how so much damn candy gets made to tempt us each year? No? Well, honestly, I didn’t either. But I watched this anyway and it was pretty fascinating. So YMMV.

And for tonight’s feature, The Night Walker. Starring Barbara Stanwyck (Christmas in Connecticut) as a woman married to an eccentric blind inventor (played by Hayden Rorke, I Dream of Jeannie) who’s so jealous and suspicious only his lawyer (played by Robert Taylor, approximately 611 westerns). But then Stanwyck’s character starts to have wacky dreams…is she going bonkers? According to Wikipedia (which is always right), it’s the final black and white film made by Universal and the final theatrically released film for Stanwyck. It was directed by William Castle and written by some guy named…let me check my notes…Robert Bloch. Yeah, him.

Tonight: the Headless Horseman's costume, Guillermo Del Toro speaks, and then...THE WRESTLING WOMEN VS. THE AZTEC MUMMY!

32 Days of Halloween XVIII, Day 28

First up, a close-up inspection of the work of the mighty costume designer Colleen Atwood. She’s been nominated twelve times for Best Costume Design at the Oscars and gotten the award four freakin’ times. In this Headless Horseman costume from Sleepy Hollow, it’s easy to see why and also why Tim Burton has had her designing costumes for almost all of his films.

This is actually a really great interview with Guillermo del Toro talking about his journey that has ultimately led to his adaptation of Frankenstein.

For tonight’s feature, certainly the winner for this year’s best title: Las Luchadoras Contra La Momia Azteca aka The Wrestling Women vs. The Aztec Mummy! I’m…not sure what else I can say since the title basically gave you all the setup you need. Enjoy.

32 Days of Halloween XVIII, Day 27

First up, we’re talking mummies. But actual mummies. And actual mummy tattoos. Which is fascinating.

And then…you can thank Rob for this. He sent me a snippet of a Lawrence Welk Halloween show and I thought, “Huh. I don’t think we’ve had Lawrence Welk on here before.” Watch this and you will better understand why the generation(s) before you turned out the way they did.

For tonight’s feature: The Abominable Snowman! It’s directed by Val Guest (Quatermass Xperiment), adapted by Nigel Kneale from his own story (he wrote the original serial for Quatermass). A researcher (Peter Cushing) joins an expedition headed up by a glory hunter (Forrest Tucker, The Crawling Eye) in search of the Yeti. Since this is 32 Days of Halloween, I’m sure you can anticipate that things don’t go according to plan. Enjoy.

32 Days of Halloween XVIII, Day 26

We start off today’s selections with one of two surviving episodes of The Black Chapel. Two surviving episodes out of a hundred broadcast. Damn. Here’s “The Crawling Terror.”

Next, we have the surreal stop motion fever dream The Mascot from 1933. It was directed by Wladyslaw Starewicz and his daughter Irene Starewicz. It’s Halloweeny not just because of an appearance by the Devil, and not just because of floating animal skeletons, but it’s just weird AF.

For tonight’s feature, we have Torture Ship. It’s based on Jack London’s first published short story, “A Thousand Deaths.” It stars Lyle Talbot (the first portrayal of Commissioner Gordon in the 1949 Batman and Robin serial), Irving Pichel (Fagin in the first adaptation of Oliver Twist to have sound, from 1933), and Julie Bishop (The Black Cat 1934). A mad scientist has criminals aboard his private ship and experiments on them. Enjoy.

32 Days of Halloween XVIII, Day 25

Be advised: if I ever find myself at Ren Fest and the band launches into this, I am throwing serious coin at them.

One of the theme songs of the season (I guess) is “(everyday is) Halloween” by Ministry. Originally out in 1984, in 2019 they released this great acoustic version with guest star Dave Navarro.

One of Vincent Price’s signature roles is Dr. Anton Phibes, in which he can wear a Vincent Price mask and dub in his lines later. What a genius. When he believes his wife died as a result of the incompetence of the doctors performing surgery on her, he decides to gain revenge and use the Ten Plagues of Egypt as inspiration. As you do. A splendid time is guaranteed for all.

Tonight: A haunted chair! A haunted house! And then...DR. JEKYLL Y EL HOMBRE LOBO!

32 Days of Halloween XVIII, Day 24

In 1973, a news story about a haunted chair went out on the BBC show Nationwide. Britain must have been a great place back then, when you could make up a story and wind up on the news promoting your business.

Sir, what was your friend doing in the basement that he sat in the chair? How did some kid talk you into letting him sit in the chair? How good a friend did you lose that you won’t destroy the chair because of posterity? So many questions. And also, how did Busby curse a chair that wasn’t made until around 140 years after his death?

Anyway. I can’t remember the last time we had an episode of One Step Beyond. Granted, I can’t remember what I had for breakfast…but no matter. The young actress in this? Mimi Gibson. She was the voice of Lucky in One Hundred and One Dalmatians.

Finally, we’ve got Dr. Jekyll y el Hombre Lobo aka Dr. Jekyll and the Wolfman aka Dr. Jekyll and the Werewolf. It’s the sixth of twelve movies starring Paul Naschy as the lycanthropically cursed Count Waldemar Daninsky. No, don’t worry if you haven’t seen the first five. Apparently they’re all standalone films. And in this one, Naschy plays the Count, his werewolf self, and Mr. Hyde. Oh, and did we mention he wrote all these movies? Impressive. Enjoy.

So before today’s feature film, some useful tips for Halloweening up your home or, I don’t know, even your place of business. You know, if you work some place really cool. Our first two videos are about things you can leave on your front porch to signify that you are celebrating the season. A pumpkin is one thing. A freaky looking skull is another. If you really want bonus points, go for both.

For tonight’s feature, we go to 1965 and Two on a Guillotine. The director? William “Yes, I am the Rocky & Bullwinkle Narrator” Conrad. The writers? John Kneubuhl (The Screaming Skull) and Henry Slesar (a slew of Alfred Hitchcock Presents). A stage magician loses his wife in an accident involving the titular execution device and when he also dies much later, his daughter (wife and daughter both played by Connie Stevens) has to spend a week in his haunted mansion to get her inheritance. Cesar Romero (Yes, 1960s Joker) plays the magician. Dean Jones (Herbie) plays a reporter who’s trying to help the daughter. Enjoy.

Tonight: The Haunted Ship, a Vincent Price/Peter Lorre show that could have been, then...BLACK NOON!

32 Days of Halloween XVIII, Day 22

First up for tonight, from 1930 we have the Van Beuren animation studio’s pair of Waffles & Don in the short “The Haunted Ship.” Waffles & Don, by the way, is a great name for a band. If you’ve never heard of Van Beuren…well, they didn’t do so well. Apparently, according to Wikipedia (which is always right), they did put out the first animated film with synchronized sound…but it left such an impression that Steamboat Willie normally gets touted with that milestone…even though it premiered a month later. This is surreal even for cartoons of the 1930s.

So this was news to me: Vincent Price and Peter Lorre were almost in a mystery TV series together as antique appraisers/dealers. This is the unsold pilot from 1958. The show was called Collector’s Item. This episode was called “The Left Fist of David.” Alas. In a cooler universe than ours, the pilot was probably reshot and then went on for five seasons.

Tonight’s feature is from 1971: Black Noon. It was directed by Bernard L. Kowalski (Night of the Giant Leeches), and stars a number of familiar folks Roy Thinnes (Dark Shadows 1991), Yvette Mimieux (The Time Machine 1960), Ray Milland (X: The Man With X-Ray Eyes), Gloria Grahame (Blood and Lace), Henry Silva (Megaforce), and others. A reverend and his wife are stranded in the desert and doing poorly when they’re rescued and taken to the town of San Lemas where they can recover. Or maybe more, since the town is in need of a spiritual shepherd to their flock. But is something sinister behind their kindness? To quote the famous philosopher Bugs Bunny: “EHHHH COULD BEEEEE.” Enjoy.

Tonight: Karloff's Tales of the Frightened and The Veil then...THE TERMINAL MAN!

32 Days of Halloween XVIII, Day 21

Time to go back to the short audio bits Boris Karloff recorded as Tales of the Frightened for Reader’s Digest. As I have related many a time, Karloff could read one-star reviews of AA batteries on Amazon and I’d be enthralled.

It just hit me: I wish this had happened: Karloff should have read the Shipping Forecast on the BBC once. Just have him do it in his normal voice and see if anyone noticed. That would have been fantastic.

They’re available on MP3 from Amazon in two volumes here and here.

And that put me in mind of another Karloff series we’ve shown before: The Veil. A pilot and ten episodes were done and then the show was abandoned. Only the pilot ever aired in its original form. It was repackaged and put out on DVD as Tales of the Unexplained. This is the episode “The Doctors.”

And finally, our feature for tonight is based on a Crichton novel. The Terminal Man was scribed and directed by Mike Hodges (the original Get Carter). Lots of faces in this you’ll recognize, for it stars George Segal (Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?), Joan Hackett (Dead of Night 1977), Richard Dysart (The Thing 1982), Jill Clayburgh (Silver Streak), Donald Moffat (The Thing 1982), and Matt Clark (Buckaroo Banzai). Segal plays a guy who was in an auto accident and has suffered seizures where he blacks out and when he comes back to himself he’s been violent. But a new procedure of implanting a device that will know when a seizure is oncoming and block it…that sounds like a great idea. But the best laid plans of good intentions all take the road to hell. Or…something. I think I messed that up. Anyway, enjoy.

Tonight: I Monster and Lovecraft, post-apocalyptic archaeologists, and then...THE REPTILE!

32 Days of Halloween XVIII, Day 20

A rather inspired Xfinity Frankenstein commercial. Also, a demonstration of corporate synergy, since Universal (as far as I know this is still the case) owns this likeness of Frankenstein’s Monster…and Comcast owns Universal.

Now over to the group I Monster. They brought you “The Blue Wrath” which opened Shaun of the Dead. This is from their 2017 EP A Dollop of HP. It’s their version of “Nemesis” by Lovecraft.

I ran across this surreal video today. Part of a show from 1962 called Monitor. How would post-apocalyptic archaeologists interpret the items of 1960s Britain? And how long do you think it took whoever was making this to raid the props and set dec departments at the BBC and then put all of it back afterwards?

For tonight’s feature, The Reptile from 1966. It’s directed by John Gilling (The Flesh and the Fiends). It stars Noel Willman (The Man Who Knew Too Much), Ray Barrett (Contagion (1987)), Jennifer Daniel (The Kiss of the Vampire), and Michael Ripper (The Plague of the Zombies). It’s the 19th century and denizens of a community in Cornwall are dying mysteriously. Because that’s what people in communities tend to do in horror movies. A man arrives having inherited his late brother’s home and finds himself in increasingly bizarre trouble. Hijinks, as they say, ensue. Enjoy.

And now a short film of cosmic horror by YouTuber insolitum. “Sunless.” They also have an ongoing series called “Quiet Apocalypse” which is pretty great as well.

For tonight’s feature, we bring you 1965’s The Skull. It’s directed by Freddie Francis (Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors) and based on a short story by Robert Bloch. The skull in question is that of the Marquis de Sade, and there is apparently a bit of risk involved with having it in your possession. The film stars Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, along with Patrick Wymark (Witchfinder General). Enjoy.

32 Days of Halloween XVIII, Day 18

I think the main lesson to take away from this trailer for The Catman of Paris is that if you’re looking for something rare in the horror genre, ask Joe Dante.

Mike Oldfield’s “Tubular Bells” aka The Exorcist theme covered on a church organ. How do you know it’s serious? Because the player had to ask for reinforcements to press the buttons and throw the switches and whatnot.

For tonight’s feature, we have The Haunted Palace from 1963. The title is taken from Edgar Allan Poe. The plot, though, is taken from Lovecraft: The Case of Charles Dexter Ward. This is a Roger Corman-directed Poe movie, so the title is all you can count on in most cases anyway. Necromancers from the past seek to possess the bodies of their living descendants in order to…well, I mean you can guess. It’s not to buy fixer-upper houses and flip them, I can tell you that much.

The film stars Vincent Price, Lon Chaney Jr, Debra Paget (Tales of Terror), and Frank Maxwell (almost five hundred episodes of General Hospital). Enjoy.

Tonight: Composer James Bernard meeting Christopher Lee, Lights Out with Boris Karloff, and then...DREAM NO EVIL!

32 Days of Halloween XVIII, Day 17

A small bit about Hammer Films composer James Bernard. I just want to ask this: is anyone surprised that Christopher Lee was at one point stationed at Bletchley Park?

Next, an episode of Lights Out. “Death Robbery” concerns Boris Karloff as a scientist who has come up with a way to bring the dead back to life. If you’ve ever read or seen just about anything ever, you know this isn’t going to end well.

When a true believer finds her bio-father, things get sinister and murderous in a hurry. That’s the setup for Dream No Evil from 1970… aka The Faith Healer aka Now I Lay Me Down to Die. It stars Edmund O’Brien (The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance) and Michael Pataki (the 1977 Spider-Man). Enjoy!

Tonight: Trailers for Send Help & The Last Sacrifice, Tarantino's secret Alligator sequel, spooky Matrix music, and...THE SHE BEAST!

32 Days of Halloween XVIII, Day 16

Okay, first up. A couple of recent trailers that are definitely seasonal. We have Send Help, starring Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien, and directed by Sam Raimi. The trailer really speaks for itself. And then there’s an upcoming docu about the origins of the folk horror genre in the UK: The Last Sacrifice.

I included this next short bit because it contains the surprising revelation that Quentin Tarantino, to a certain extent, made a sequel to the 1980 film Alligator. (Which I had completely forgotten was written by John Sayles.)

The Matrix is not necessarily Halloweeny. However, the badass track “Clubbed to Death” by Rob Dougan performed on the synth equivalent of a massive church organ…that can definitely be Halloween adjacent enough to include.

For tonight’s feature, we have the 1966 film The She Beast. Which I could have sworn we had posted before but maybe I think that because I’ve listened to this song so much:

This film, aka The Lake of Satan aka Revenge of the Blood Beast, was the directorial debut of Michael Reeves (Witchfinder General). It stars Barbara Steele (Black Sunday) as a woman who, as the result of an accident, becomes the titular She Beast, a woman accused of witchcraft two hundred years before. It also stars John Karlsen (Slaughter Hotel), Mel Welles (the 1960 Little Shop of Horrors) and is the feature film debut of Ian Oglivy (And Now the Screaming Starts). Enjoy.

Tonight: Some Christopher Lee, Mr Fox haunts Sheffield, and then...THE COMEDY OF TERRORS!

32 Days of Halloween XVIII, Day 15

A couple of Christopher Lee shorts here. Even though they are James Bond-centric, anything with Sir Christopher Lee instantly becomes Halloween-adjacent. And I would seriously listen to him read the ingredients off a box of breakfast cereal. First, we have him discussing his cousin, Ian Fleming. And the second, a brief bit of he and Roger Moore, in which we learn that Moore could do a passable impression of Lee.

So…this is interesting. From the BBC Archives, a report on the nightlife (or lack thereof) of Sheffield. A ghost had been seen multiple times in an unnamed nightclub/restaurant/casino there. According to a spiritualist that the establishment brought in, the phantasm in question went by the name “Mr. Fox.” I’ll let the rest of the video speak for itself, but any attempts to find any record of this happening besides this TV report haven’t turned up anything. Fairly certain it was a weird (but successful) attempt at getting publicity for this place. Especially weird since said place is never named. Anyway, one last thing before you watch this: it is a legit piece from a news broadcast. It’s not from a comedy show. Despite how it comes across.

For tonight’s feature, we have The Comedy of Terrors from 1962. The cast is epic: Vincent Price, Peter Lorre (in the last film to be released before his death), Boris Karloff, Basil Rathbone, Joyce Jameson (Death Race 2000), and Joe E. Brown (Some Like It Hot, his last appearance as well). It was directed by Jacques Tourneur, who brought you I Walked With a Zombie and written by some guy named Richard Matheson. Enjoy.

Tonight: some old-time radio with Quiet, Please; then a making-of docu for the 1990 Night of the Living Dead, and then...THE BRIDE FROM HADES!

32 Days of Halloween XVIII, Day 14

Let’s open up with a bit of old-time radio: here’s an episode of Quiet, Please from 1947. “Take Me Out to the Graveyard.” And the Enhanced Radio YouTube account has done a damn fine job of cleaning up the audio.

Now we’ve got a making-of docu I stumbled across for the 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead, which was directed by Tom Savini and starred Patricia Tallman and Tony Todd. The film has some very interesting updates to the story and especially the level of makeup. The feature film worth watching. It isn’t the original…but then again, what is?

For tonight’s feature film, we go to Japan and the fourteenth (!) adaptation of this particular ghost story, Botan D?r?. (The first one was a silent film in 1910 that I tried to track down to include today, but I couldn’t find it online. Apparently a slew of versions after that one are no longer extant.) The gist of the film is something that Tom Waits also expresses: it’s a bad idea to fall in love with a ghost.

According to Wikipedia, which is always right, it has seen release under a number of names including A Tale of Peonies and Lanterns, Ghost Story: Peony Lantern, Bride From Hell, Ghost Beauty, My Bride is a Ghost, and The Bride From Hades. Enjoy.

Tonight: The Procession of the Ghouls! Doctor Demento! And then...THE UNEARTHLY!

32 Days of Halloween XVIII, Day 13

Ah, I couldn’t find one of these last year. Every year at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York they have this drama/puppetry/weirdness called The Procession of the Ghouls. They follow up this with watching a classic silent horror movie. One of these days I’ll finally get my ass up there to see it.

Well, Doctor Demento is retiring after decades of inspiring/warping the minds of many a young person, including myself. It would play on Sunday nights where I lived, past my bedtime. But I’d sneak a radio to bed and listen to it anyway. How much therapy did the good Doctor cause over the course of his career? No telling. Anyway. Here is his Halloween special from 1993.

For tonight’s feature, we have The Unearthly from 1957. It stars John Carradine (Stagecoach) as a doctor trying to extend human life via the use of artificial glands. As you do. He’s testing his ideas on…unsuspecting subjects. His minion is played by #1 entry in the Minion Hall of Fame, Tor Johnson (Plan 9 From Outer Space). His latest <s>victims</s> patients are a woman (Allison Hayes, The Undead) seeking treatment for depression and an escaped convict (Myron Healey, The Incredible Melting Man). Will the mad doctor get away with it all? What do you think? Enjoy.

Tonight: a costume ball in Paris, the Enfield Poltergeist, and then...THE DAY MARS INVADED EARTH!

32 Days of Halloween XVIII, Day 12

Okay, this first bit is super short. But it is priceless for documenting people showing up for a fancy dress ball (that’s “costume ball” for people on this side of the pond) in Paris in 1965. Seriously some of these people must have been as weird as we are. Marvelous.

While we’re in the British archives, over to the BBC for a report from 1977 on the “Enfield Poltergeist.” Reports of this apparently finally ended in 1979, according to Wikipedia (which is always right).

And now…for tonight’s feature film: it’s The Day Mars Invaded Earth from 1963. It was directed by Maury Dexter (House of the Damned) and stars Kent Taylor (The Crawling Hand), Marie Windsor (Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy) as the father and mother in a family that’s found themselves caught in the crossfire of a secret invasion (argh) of Earth by the Martians. Enjoy.

P.S. Here’s a great bit from the Wikipedia page, which amuses me to no end for some reason:

The Day Mars Invaded Earth was released as the bottom half of a double feature with the Elvis Presley film Kissin’ Cousins.

Tonight: Peter Cushing on "horror," Karloff reads some Washington Irving, and then...THE NIGHT CALLER FROM OUTER SPACE!

32 Days of Halloween XVIII, Day 11

An interesting snippet of a BBC interview with Peter Cushing here. I wouldn’t call many of Cushing’s films horror films either. The milder ones would be fantasy and others thrillers. I don’t recall a Cushing film I’ve seen that actually horrified me. That being said, would audiences when Curse of Frankenstein first came out…would they have been horrified? Good question.

As an aside: the look on his face in this thumbnail is priceless.

When it comes to Boris Karloff, if we had a video of him reading a grocery list I’d post that, just because his voice is tremendous. But we don’t have to resort to that yet (although if somebody has such a video, hit me up). Here he is from the 1977 album Boris Karloff Narrates Tales Of Mystery And Imagination, reading “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.”

And for tonight’s feature film, we have The Night Caller, also known as The Night Caller From Outer Space and Blood Beast From Outer Space. It’s directed by John Gilling (The Flesh and the Fiends) and stars John Saxon (Nightmare on Elm Street) and Maurice Denham (every damn animal voice in Animal Farm (1954)). Apparently an alien from Ganymede has landed on Earth seeking young women. (The dating scene in Ganymede was a total nightmare, I’m sure.) Enjoy.

Tonight: Doug Bradley reads Bierce, The Bridge from 1929, and then... QUEEN OF BLOOD!

32 Days of Halloween XVIII, Day 10

Doug Bradley, the man who brought you the original Pinhead, has a YouTube channel (we’ve featured before), in which he reads to you. Most them are sufficiently Halloweeny for our purposes here. Like this haunted house story from Ambrose Bierce, “The Spook House.”

While we were in the neighborhood, it only made sense to seek out some other Bierce-related material. In this case, we have the first filmed version of “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge,” called simply The Bridge. It’s a silent film directed by Charles Vidor (A Farewell to Arms (1957)). Sound FX and music were added by the poster.

Then for tonight’s feature presentation, it’s 1966’s Queen of Blood. (aka Planet of Blood.) It’s the far flung future of the year 1990, and mankind has been in space for a couple of decades. When an alien race’s ambassador crash lands, we head out to the rescue. But this turns out to be a bad idea. (Doesn’t it always in these scenarios?) It was directed by Curtis Harrington (Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet) and stares John Saxon (Enter the Dragon), Basil Rathbone (a slew of Sherlock films), Judi Meredith (Have Gun Will Travel), and Dennis Hopper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2). Also look for Forry Ackerman in a cameo. Enjoy.

32 Days of Halloween XVIII, Day 9

First up, we return to 1984. No, the year. Not the book, which is where we are now. Anyway, from a performance in Burbank, here’s “Weird Al” Yankovic performing “Nature Trail to Hell” live. The video is fair but the audio is actually pretty strong.

Knowing that Screamin’ Jay Hawkins did a very respectable cover of Tom Waits‘ “Whistlin’ Past the Graveyard,” I thought: “Wouldn’t it be cool if they ever performed it together live?” Well, that doesn’t appear to have happened. But somebody did combine both of their versions of the song to create this…which is actually pretty cool.

The reason I state the title of tonight’s feature with such incredulity is that it’s…I mean, it sounds like something I made up. Or the name of a badass experimental prog rock band from Japan. Maneater of Hydra. It also went by Island of the Doomed and The Blood Suckers. Basically a scientist (Cameron Mitchell from Blood and Black Lace) is working on some plants that are basically distant cousins of Triffids. They feed off the blood of humans and, well, there happen to be some humans that show up. These humans don’t necessarily wish to be fed upon. Conflict ensues. Enjoy.

Tonight: Koko the Clown, The Elvira Show, and... MONSTER A GO-GO!

32 Days of Halloween XVIII, Day 8

First up, from 1925…we have Max Fleischer’s Koko the Clown in Koko’s Haunted Hat aka Koko Sees Spooks. Yes, a hundred year old cartoon. You might even be watching this on a phone. Insanity. I still find the animation on this to be quite tight.

I don’t think I knew that a pilot was shot for The Elvira Show in 1993 with Katherine Helmond playing Elvira’s Aunt Minerva. It did not get picked up.

At last, I found it to embed here. Monster a Go-Go concerns an astronaut who disappears and/or transforms into a monster. Directed by Bill Rebane (The Giant Spider Invasion) and Herschell Gordon Lewis (Blood Feast), it’s low budget rubbish of the highest order. Enjoy.

Tonight: skeleton manufacturing from the 1960s, the Plan 9 From Outer Space trailer with commentary, and...THE DEVIL's HAND!

32 Days of Halloween XVIII, Day 6

First, we have a short 1963 film from British Pathé with a company that creates all manner of skeleton and skeleton bits. The narration is at times painful, but the background music is positively mind-destroying. We apologize in advance.

Next, we’ve got some high quality trailer commentary from Dana Gould. This time Trailers From Hell brings you the trailer for Plan 9 From Outer Space.

And for tonight’s feature film selection, we have The Devil’s Hand from 1961. There’s a cult in Los Angeles that worships the evil god Gamba. (Is there really an evil god Gamba in mythology somewhere? No. Gamba is many thinks, according to Wikipedia (which is always right) but evil god is not one of them. “Hebrew word for a red bell pepper” is one of them, however. But that’s not evil unless you really really don’t like red bell peppers. Sorry, I’ve gotten distracted.)

Our protagonist Rick (Robert Alda–yes, Alan’s dad) gets mixed up in all this because he keeps having visions of a woman he hasn’t met (yet–played by Linda Christian, the first Bond girl). Rick goes to a shop with his girlfriend (Ariadne Welter–Linda Christian’s real life sister) to find a doll which looks just like the vision girl and another that looks like his girlfriend. Hijinks just ensue harder from there. Also in the film? Neil Hamilton (Commissioner Gordon from the 1960s Batman series). Enjoy.

Tonight: voodoo in New Orleans, Tarantino wasn't actually in Dawn of the Dead, and Karloff--twice--in...THE BLACK ROOM!

32 Days of Halloween XVIII, Day 5

The BBC have a brief report on voodoo in New Orleans and actual practitioners. If you’ve ever wanted to meet a priestess and a high priestess of voodoo that, you know, aren’t fictional characters, now’s your chance.

The main reason I am sharing this with you–which is a compilation of sound bits of Tarantino talking about Dawn of the Dead (1978)–is he has a great tale about his acting CV, how pieces of it were invented, and what transpired later.

And then for tonight’s film, we go back to 1935. It’s The Black Room. And it stars Boris Karloff. Twice. No, really. When there’s a prophecy that the younger twin will kill the older one, then there’s only one thing for the older brother to do…of course. And hijinks ensue. Enjoy.

Tonight! the state of horror in 1986, more green than you've ever seen in a Halloween lights display, and...I VAMPIRI!

32 Days of Halloween XVIII, Day 4

Welcome to the weekend. This first trailer is absolutely a drama with horrific elements. The Thing With Feathers looks like a darker version of the 2023 film Tuesday starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Benedict Cumberbatch stars and…see if you can guess who the voice is. I couldn’t. Make a guess and then swipe below to see if you got it right:

David Thewlis.

Next, a 1986 report from the BBC on the state of horror. As the title indicates, they seek out Ramsey Campbell, David Cronenberg, and Alan Moore to get their take on things.

And now: it’s what happens when you mix a Halloween lights display with The Matrix. Huge bonus points for the pumpkin vocalists.

And lastly, we have from 1957: I Vampiri, aka The Devil’s Commandment aka Lust of the Vampire. The film’s director left and so cinematographer Mario Bava had to step up and take the reins. This was a few years before his official directorial debut, Black Sunday.
