Conceivably the speech detection algorithm may be able to decipher the speech of multiple speakers talking at the same time. Anew patent application by the Korean company Samsung hints at new speech recognition engines that will be able to single out speakers in crowded and noisy environments. &amp;nbsp;Conceivably the speech detection algorithm may be able to decipher the speech of multiple speakers talking at the same time. According to the patent application, The speech recongnition method for the robot includes one fundamental acoustic model. &amp;nbsp;Whenever the noisy environment and the speaker are changed, the speech recognition method generates a plurality of parallel acoustic models in which the characteristic for each speaker are reflected. &amp;nbsp; As a result, the speech recognition method for the robot can freely recognize one of several speakers, such that it can basically remove mismatch between the model training environment and the test environment thereby improving speech recognition capabilities. It is unclear at this stage whether or not the patent application relates to Samsung's S Voice technology, or what type of robotic platform the company is developing for the application. Samsung has its own line of humanoid robots, the&amp;nbsp;Mahru series. The latest, Mahru-Z, was created by engineers at KAIST leveraging earlier Samsung systems, and is intended to serve as a robot maid. You Bum-Jae, head of KAIST’s cognitive robot centre at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology, bragged to Ben Goertzel: “It recognizes people, can turn on microwave ovens, washing machines and toasters, and also pick up sandwiches, cups and whatever else it senses as objects.” Mahru-Z is not yet ready for commercial release, but it’s clearly a serious step toward Korea’s stated goal of “a robot in every home by 2020.” KAIST is also now working on HUBO 2 robot. &amp;nbsp;Drexel University recently purchased six of the highly advanced robots. &amp;nbsp;Comparable in size and sophistication to&amp;nbsp;Honda’s ASIMO&amp;nbsp;but built at a fraction of the cost,&amp;nbsp;HUBO 2 Plus&amp;nbsp;is one of the world’s most advanced humanoid robots. &amp;nbsp;Potentially with advanced in speech&amp;nbsp;recognition being implemented in these robots, they will appear smarter as well.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; SOURCE &amp;nbsp;United States Patent Office via Engadget By 33rd SquareSubscribe to 33rd Square For the latest please visit www.33rdsquare.com</itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>gadgets,technology,space,ai,artificial,intelligence,science,nanotechnology,singularity,medicine,genomics,art,design,computers</itunes:keywords><description>&amp;nbsp;Robots

Global trends in health and economics come to vivid life. And the big picture of global development—with some surprisingly good news—snaps into sharp focus. Hans Rosling had a question: Do some religions have a higher birth rate than others — and how does this affect global population growth? Speaking at the TEDxSummit in Doha, Qatar, he graphs data over time and across religions. With his trademark humor and sharp insight, Hans reaches a surprising conclusion on world fertility rates. Even the most worldly and well-traveled among us will have their perspectives shifted by Rosling. A professor of global health at Sweden's Karolinska Institute, his current work focuses on dispelling common myths about the so-called developing world, which (he points out) is no longer worlds away from the West. In fact, most of the Third World is on the same trajectory toward health and prosperity, and many countries are moving twice as fast as the west did. Rosling's presentations are grounded in solid statistics (often drawn from United Nations data), illustrated by the visualization software he developed. The animations transform development statistics into moving bubbles and flowing curves that make global trends clear, intuitive and even playful. During his legendary presentations, Rosling takes this one step farther, narrating the animations with a sportscaster's flair. Rosling developed the breakthrough software behind his visualizations through his nonprofit&amp;nbsp;Gapminder, founded with his son and daughter-in-law. The free software — which can be loaded with any data — was purchased by Google in March 2007. In this case, the data may not properly reveal the true path of human population numbers. &amp;nbsp; In Rosling's view, those aged 65+ will continue to die off at the same rate over the next century. &amp;nbsp; What this data does not take into account (potentially) is the increase in lifespans that will be made possible in the future. &amp;nbsp;Dramatically longer lifespans. Proponents of extending human lifespan, such as&amp;nbsp;Aubrey de Grey&amp;nbsp;have long been predicting that such medical technologies would be effective.&amp;nbsp; According to de Grey: The trigger for such a dramatic shift in public expectations (which are over-pessimistic today, of course) will be that the laboratory results will be on animals that are already in middle age before anything is done to them. The most likely scenario is that two-year-old mice that would normally live to three years old will instead live to at least five years old. That is, their remaining lifespan starting from when the treatments are begun will be trebled from one year to three. This will translate into about 60 years of extra life for people who are already about 60 when the treatment begins, and that may excite people a little, especially since all the extra life will be youthful. In fact, I think it’ll probably take at least 15–20 further years (until about 2020 or 2025) to get even 30 years for humans, but that’s only the start.* For instance,&amp;nbsp;a specific enzyme, called&amp;nbsp;5-lipoxygenase, plays a key role in cell death induced by microgravity environments, and that inhibiting this enzyme will likely help prevent or reduce the severity of immune problems experienced by&amp;nbsp;astronauts&amp;nbsp;during space flight.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;Gene therapy has also recently been successful at extending mouse lifespans by 24%. &amp;nbsp; Although demographic changes are slow, they are relentless and can have a tremendous impact over the long term. A population that regularly lives to be 110 or 150—in robust, active bodies—must confront some fundamental questions about how societies are structured. Economic issues of retirement, financial planning, and social security may be the most obvious, but basic questions about human relationships may be more profound. &amp;nbsp; SOURCE &amp;nbsp;TED By 33rd SquareSubscribe to 33rd Square For the latest please visit www.33rdsquare.</itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>gadgets,technology,space,ai,artificial,intelligence,science,nanotechnology,singularity,medicine,genomics,art,design,computers</itunes:keywords><description>&amp;nbsp;Demographics

Scientists at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) have created a new piezoelectric nanogenerator that promises to overcome the restrictions found in previous attempts to build a simple, low-cost, large scale self-powered energy system. Piezoelectric materials can convert vibrational and mechanical forces from, wind and waves, into an electric current. This property has been harnessed to create better microphone transducers and, in more recent years, to harvest energy from clothing, shoes, and even traffic. Last year, a team led by Dr. Zhong Lin Wang announced it had created the world's first piezoelectric nanogenerator and, shortly after, also announced the first self-powered nanodevice complete with a wireless transmitter. Now Wang and his team have announced further progress in creating a low-cost, large-scale nanogenerator which is also simple to manufacture. The team produced a composite by mixing piezoelectric nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes and reduced graphene oxide in a matrix of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The nanogenerator was then fabricated by process of spin-casting. "The generator is mainly made of plastics and zinc oxide, so the materials are environmentally friendly," says Wang. Despite its relative simplicity, the composite generates a much higher power density than other devices with a similar structure and has an energy conversion efficiency of seven percent.&amp;nbsp; Wang says that if the nanogenerator were to be embedded in a pair of shoes, an average-build person could generate around 3W just by walking. For reference, that would be roughly enough to power an iPad 2.. Preliminary durability studies have confirmed that, even after thousands of cycles in which the material was repeatedly bent and released, the nanogenerator consistently produced the same amount of electric current, with no noticeable degradation in performance. As Wang points out, the applications of such a technology are very broad and could include biosensing, medical devices, environmental and health monitoring,&amp;nbsp;defence&amp;nbsp;technology, and potentially the Internet of Things. A Paper (PDF) detailing the findings was featured in the April online issue of the journal&amp;nbsp;Wiley Advanced Materials.
