Lockers for the homeless in Lisbon

Simple, useful and, very important, shows solidarity.
Today I will address work by designers that are not part of the mainstream design industry.
An initiative of the Conversa Amiga Association (ACA), the end of 2014 witnessed the implementation of the first lockers for the homeless. These yellow metallic lockers, located in the Arroios Square, will offer some quality of life, through the possibility of storing their belongings, to those whose daily routine does not include a “house”, in the proper sense. This equipment was manufactured by Cabena, a company that specializes in urban furniture, and financed by the Lisbon Municipality.

DIY Weekend #02

A door for everyone! A door no longer needs to be simple, common and discret. It can be bold, different, the focal point of the room or an art piece.
And I'm not just referring to painting it a different color. You can use two or three colors, create geometric patterns, use washi or electrical tape, cover it with wallpaper or fabric. All is possible! Just let your imagination flow...
So here are some ideas for a different door in your house.

DIY Weekend #01

Several months ago, even before 351 Design Street was born, I saw a post at A Beautiful Mess that caught my attention. Sure, it’s an easy and fast DIY, but it makes such a huge difference in an otherwise forgotten and neglected room. So, I highly recommend this DIY. It takes no more than 1 hour per appliance and it can be used in the washer and dryer as showed in the blog post, but also from the fridge, stove, dishwasher and so on.

A park facing the Tagus River

After a great absence in the blogosphere, today I bring you a very good example of a river front regeneration.
The Vila Franca de Xira municipality has surprised me several times in recent years. One of my discoveries took place during the spring of 2012: the Tagus Linear Park.
Work begun at the end of 2011, and when I visited it for the first time was still under construction, but it can now be [almost] fully enjoyed. Located near industrial areas, this park, which regenerated part of the river front, occupies an area of 15,5 ha and presents several leisure and recreational possibilities, such as walking and cycling paths that run along streams and drainage ditches, platforms for fishing, shelters, picnic areas, a volleyball court and a playground.
The landscape design was created by Topiaris – Arquitectura Paisagista and the area built next to Praia dos Pescadores, designed by Difusor de Arquitectura, presents a solution with recycled maritime containers painted in white and partially clad with wood. Here we can find the Center for Environmental and Landscape Interpretation (not yet working in this location), a coffee shop and the bathrooms.
This is a different and very pleasant setting where these winter sunny days, though cold, radiate a fascinating light and brightness.

Nelson Garrido - Boa Nova Tea House

I often visit Nelson Garrido's website. His photos have a magnetic effect on me and I can not have enough of them.
Today I bring you four wonderful photos of the Boa Nova Tea House, a project by Siza Vieira built between 1956 and 1963. It was closed, abandoned and forgotten for several years, but recently it was renovated with the architect’s supervision and reopened as a restaurant by chef Rui Paula.

Pantone Color of the Year 2015 - Marsala

A couple of weeks ago Pantone announced the color of the year for 2015: Marsala!
What is Marsala?! Well it’s a rich, full body color. It's the evolution of last year's Pantone's color of the year: Radiant Orchid.
For me it's a very difficult color to decorate with.  It will certainly lead to a more classical or formal design and it reminds me a lot of red wine and the (awful) 90's velvet sofas.

Água de Prata

João Bruno Videira, a Science Communication graduate, created Água de Prata in 2006. With a job in the city, João dropped everything to be a self-taught craftsman and designer and moved to Graça do Divor, a small village between Arraiolos and Évora, in Alentejo, Portugal.
Like the TASA project I wrote about here, Água de Prata’s main goal is to combine traditional crafts techniques with contemporary design and needs. Arraiolos wool is the main material and its use is constantly reinvented with each new piece, making it unique and unrepeatable.

The Versatility of Microcement

I was invited by Nanocrete participate in a Microcrete microcement workshop and, seeing at 351 Design Street we have a particular interest in concrete (Marta wrote a post about this material here) and its multiple uses, I accepted the challenge.

Microcement allows for minimalistic results that are similar to cement and is currently being used extensively due to the contemporary language it conveys to architecture and design. Aesthetics, functionality and the quick application method, make this material a good choice for spaces in need of renovation, especially if the floor or the walls are to be replaced without removing the existing ones.

With a wide color palette, this material is used in interiors and exteriors, and can be applied on the several surfaces, such as wood, MDF boards, tile or even glass. It does not need expansion joints (except when applied on a material that needs these joints), it is water and grease resistant and has low weight.

The versatility of the material allows that extraordinary environments and design pieces be created: the floors and kitchen counters, as in the restaurant Conceito in Estoril (Portugal), or 1300 Taberna at the LXFactory, Lisbon (Portugal); in bathrooms or decoration details, as can be seen in the bas-relief letters in the Hotel Casa do Conto, in Porto (Portugal) designed by the Pedra Líquida architecture collective or in the extraordinary The Initiation project, designed by Wei Yi Design Associates.

Microcrete is a brand among several others in the market, but this one, not only does it give everyone interested the opportunity to participate in a workshop to get to know the product, but it can also state they are 100% Portuguese!

Côa Museum

In Portugal’s northeastern mountains schist rocks that border the banks of the Côa, a tributary of the Douro River, became art panels for our ancestors 25,000 years ago. The last seventeen kilometers of the Côa River, with hundreds of engravings on its margins, became the first Portuguese archaeological park and in 1998 was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
This extensive collection of outdoor rock art sets aside the myth that this type of art can only be seen in closed caves and therefore its historical value is priceless.

With the existence of the Côa Valley Archaeological Park there was a need for a museum that would not only welcome some of the panels at risk, but also inform and disseminate the rock art of the Côa Valley to its visitors. Thus, in 2003, during the International Year of Architecture, the Ministry of Culture in partnership with the Association of Portuguese Architects launched a competition for the design of the Museum of Art and Archaeology of the Côa Valley. The first prize was given to the team coordinated by architects Camilo Rebelo and Tiago Pimentel.

Completed in 2009, the monolithic triangular shaped building with four floors (one of them underground), is characterized by the impressive straight and contemporary lines, but nonetheless in perfect harmony with the surrounding landscape.
The concrete structure was designed to look like the local schist through the use of fiberglass molds.
The that ramp crosses the entire permanent exhibition floor connects the spaces and distributes visitors.

The pictures speak for themselves. This museum is worth a visit, not only for the historical and cultural enrichment, but also for the building itself.

A Padaria Portuguesa

A Padaria Portuguesa (in English "The Portuguese Bakery") is a chain of bakeries that opened their first bakery in 2011. Today there are 25 stores throughout Lisbon.
It all started when cousins Nuno Carvalho and José Diogo Quintela joined forces to create a space that combined good bread with the typical small Portuguese bakery feel.
I will not go into the economic details of it. Suffice to say that they plan to reach 40 stores by 2016 and to create 250 new jobs.
And I won’t argue if the bread is good, the croissant divine and the “pão de deus” amazing.
Here we want talk about design and architecture! So when entering one of Padaria Portuguesa's locations we immediately realize their common denominator: the tones revolve around terracotta and orange, the walls are black, there are funny statements on the wall, and light, lots of it! The flooring is handmade encaustic cement tile by Projecto Mosaico and it is so perfect that it looks like printed, but in fact it is the true handmade encaustic cement tile!

One thing is certain in Padaria Portuguesa: the atmosphere of the bakeries is well thought out to reveal the idea of a traditional and old fashioned place, but being modern, young and fun at the same time!

I only miss the typical cloth bread bags.

BOP | Bop glass by João Villar

BOP is a beautiful glass, with an intelligent design and it's Portuguese!

2009 saw the beginning of this object, when João Villar was still a Design student. The concept is a glass that doesn’t tip over and the result was a sphere glass with center of gravity in its base allowing it to never tip over. The name actually derived from the English expression Bop Bag.

These blown glass objects are produced individually, in Marinha Grande (Portugal), by craftsmen. Theres are 3 sizes: COPO BOP (approximately 20 cl.), COPO MINI BOP (approximately 8 cl.) or TIGELA BOPPY (approximately 7 cl.), the latter having the same size as the COPO MINI BOP, but slightly wider at the rim.

BOP glasses are currently for sale through the BOPLAND webpage or in the following stores : Hangar Design Store, Original Lisboa, Pátria Interiores, a ELLG Gourmet, Giv Lowe, Rosmaninho, Plátano Decorações, Horto do Campo Grande, a Alma Lusa e a Bairro Arte.

These objects can be used in a vast number of ways, from the more conventional uses, as a glass or a bowl, to a bolder use, such as candleholders, containers for spices or dry flowers; or whatever your imagination will allow.

BOPLAND recently launched cork lid, meaning an even wider use of the BOP glasses.

Here is a good idea for those who haven't decided what to give family or friends for Christmas!

An accent wall can transform a plain room into something different, bright and even sexy. It’s an alternative to wall art and it can be used to personalize a room’s design and claim it as yours.
The easiest way to make an accent wall is to paint it in a different color. But there are other ways. You can use wallpaper, stencil it, write a poem, cover it with a different material, use washi tape, stamp it, paint geometrical figures, and so on.
In the end you’ll see the difference an accent wall can bring to a room.

Vélocité Café

Vélocité Café is more than just a coffee shop. It’s also home to a bike workshop and a bike and accessories shop. In here everything is about bikes!
A retro decor with Nordic touches uses several of the bikes and vintage inspired accessories for sale as decor elements: racks, bags, handlebars, handgrips and wheels fill the walls and shelves here.
Although it looks small from the outside, the truth is that inside it has a few small tables with mismatched chairs, a bar in the center and the bike workshop with a huge glass window at the end on the left, where you can see all the work and/or restoration taking place. Outside there are a few tables overlooking a bike lane, which can be very pleasant on a sunny day, and a front bike set and wheel hang from the ceiling just above the front door.
The service and menu are very simple but efficient. Here everything is fresh and we can enjoy salads, vegetarian dishes and fresh pressed fruit juices. Oh! And if you arrive by bike you get 10% off!

Contemporary meets traditional at Villa Extramuros

While visiting the castle of Arraiolos, I notice a somehow distant white building. It's Villa Extramuros, designed by Voar Arquitectura, on the outskirts of Arraiolos, a village in Alentejo, Portugal.

I drive through a dirt road and, after a while, I reach an olive grove through which I can see a two-floor contemporary building with cork-lined walls and ceilings that bolster the volume of the white walls.

“The architecture of the Villa, inspired by Roman camps as well as by medieval convents […] pays homage to the characteristic materials of Alentejo: white marble stone, white-washed walls and cork”, as mentioned in their webpage.

I am welcomed by one the owners, a Parisian man that has settled in Alentejo, that guides me through the common areas: a patio that, as with medieval cloisters, joins the areas that surround it; a dinning area; a lounging area; and five rooms that are located in the upper floor (and which I could not visit seeing they were occupied). In the exterior, one can easily be enthralled by the tranquility of the olive grove and the infinity swimming pool overlooking the Castle of Arraiolos.

The strategy used in the decoration is also very interesting, as it combines design from the 50s to today, with local crafts.

TASA project - crafts' future

Portuguese Design at Boa Safra

The banners on the façade don't mislead you: you've arrived at Embaixada!
The result of a private initiative (funded by Anthony Lanier's EastBanc), this comecial space in the Ribeiro da Cunha neo-Arab manor house opened doors in 2013. The rehabilitation project harmoniously combines contemporary architecture with the romantic taste of the end of the 19th century. The concept presents an alternative to shopping malls and to the mainstream brands, and showcases several Portuguese-designer items.
And it is here that we will find Boa Safra, a publishing company that is also a designer store. It displays original ecological design pieces, several of these by Portuguese designers such as Carlos Aguiar, Daniel Pera, Magda Alves Pereira, Lu Barradas, Luis Porém, Samuel Pereira Pinto and MOOD.

Encaustic cement tiles - the storytellers!

This past week I read at A Ervilha Cor de Rosa a post about encaustic cement tiles. A few years ago I would passthese and would not give them much thought, but nowadays looking at a floor (or wall!) that has them will make my day! But what is encaustic cement tile and what’s the story behind it?
Encaustic cement tiles – or hydraulic tiles - are completely handmade made from cement that is hardened through a hydraulic press instead of being baked. The art of encaustic cement tiles was born in southern France in the late 19th century, but spread largely to Spain, Italy, England and Portugal. It was popular for its resistance and decorative qualities: with encaustic cement tiles you can tell several different stories. It was considered exclusive to the upper class of the time due to its manual manufacturing process.
With the industrialization of the 60s other less elaborate and more profitable materials gradually replaced it and it was, eventually, forgotten and almost disappeared. However, in recent years we have witnessed a reuse of this material in contemporary architecture with retro touches. Therefore, we’re entering a major new phase of manufacture. Of course this new phase, as Rosa Pomar said in her post "mosaico hidráulico 2.0", has both good and bad consequences. The good? The new impulse due to the vintage and retro trend going on right now, resulting in more fans and more manufacturers and invariably more options. The bad? Poor quality imitations in which the pattern is printed.
The real encaustic cement tile still has to be produced as it was originally; despite the technological advances, it is still impossible to industrially reproduce the colors, matte finish and soft texture of the handmade mosaic.

Designing a room: basic rules

Designing a room can be a gift for some, but a real nightmare for many others.
If you’re just like me and belong to the nightmare group, you should know that we’re probably just overthinking the whole thing! And in the end we just hate the result...

That’s why I always follow some basic rules when designing a room or an entire house!

Pick a neutral color. Black and White are the most common ones, but nowadays grey is a viable option. Go crazy with that neutral one!

Pick a second color. It should be a contrasting one and the livelier the better! This color will bring life and fun to the room and you should apply it in the little details.

O Moderno Escondido – The [increasingly] Hidden Modern

During a recent trip to Trás-os-Montes (Portugal) I witnessed an extraordinary example of Portuguese modernist urbanism and architecture of 50s, which Michele Cannatà and Fátima Fernandes of Cannatà e Fernandes, have designated as “Moderno Escondido”, or the Hidden Modern (an investigation that resulted in an exhibition and a book “Modern Escondido: Arquitectura das Centrais Hidroeléctricas do Douro 1953-1964: Picote, Miranda, Bemposta”, FAUP Publicações, 1997).

The Residential Complex of Picote, built during the construction of the Douro dams, designed by Archer de Carvalho, Nunes de Almeida and Rogério Ramos, architects who graduated from ESBAP, in Oporto, Portugal, was designed to be an “ideal city”, a city built from scratch, with the necessary infrastructures to become a self-sufficient system for 4000 thousand people.

The complex reflects contemporary modernist influences of Le Corbusier and the propositions of the Athens Charter, and blends it with Portuguese culture. It includes a housing area for workers, a school, a church, a shopping mall, houses for the executive staff and an inn.

In my visit I had access to the executive staff’s houses. These were abandoned and, with no preservation works in the horizon, will continue its natural (or, sometimes, un-natural) process of degradation. However, the quality of the materials is still visible: wood, Portuguese tiles, stone, among others.

The 2011 short film Ruínas de Portugal – O Moderno Escondido (by RR productions, image by Manuel Barreto and editing by Rui Gonçalves) shows the advanced degradation of the houses.

Trás-os-Montes discloses many wonderful settings, some more hidden than others.

Cabanas no Rio

Approximately an hour south of Lisbon, Portugal, and five minutes away from the Comporta beach, on the banks of the Sado River are these two cabins with 14m2 each. One features the bedroom and en-suite bathroom with a shower (which can be used indoors or outdoors); the other, a living room and a small kitchen for light meals. There’s also a small porch with amazing river views.
Cabanas no Rio (in English, Cabins on the River), were once fishermen’s huts. The reinterpretation project took place in 2013 and was designed by Aires Mateus, architects. The construction is entirely in reclaimed timber, including most of the furniture, and the whole structure was built off-site and transported by a truck.
The timber was purposely left exposed and therefore subjected to the weather that will keep on changing it. For the Architects this means not degradation but an identity change.
And you can even spend the night here. Cabanas no Rio is a great complement to the region, well-known for its white-sand beaches, wine, food and dolphin, stork and flamingo watching.

Meia Tigela AKA "Half Bowl"

A few weeks ago I spent a weekend in central Portugal, near Caldas da Rainha.

MeiaTigela was a nice surprise in the middle of this city.

I can envision its success in Chiado, a trendy Lisbon quarter. But here I was able to fully enjoy its calmness and simplicity just to myself. The ambiance, the staff's friendliness, the amazing and simple food were its highest points.

With a Nordic feeling to its design, in this gastropub – as they call themselves – every little detail has a story to tell and it all comes together even the quirky frog!

Great ice cream parlor that's pumping up the Anjos neighborhood

An old bakery on Rua do Forno do Tijolo has been renovated into a simple and hipster ice cream parlor. The recently opened Fábrica do Gelado has maintained the appearance and several details of the former bakery: the interesting and unusual ceramic ivory-colored and the golden-brown tiles, the marble counters, the flooring and some of the paintings on the walls. Renovation works took into consideration rehabilitation ethics, where [most] changes are reversible, and mainly dealt with small modifications in order to adapt the space into an ice-cream parlor and to comply with the legislation.

Of the existing paintings, three were rehabilitated by Akto and where the others stood, one can now see the works of Colectivo Francês, which depict Fábrica do Gelado’s trade and its partners.

The space only fits a handful of people, meaning it is a place to essentially grab and go. Nonetheless, they managed to fit two stools for those who enjoy taking their time eating their ice cream, homemade cake, hot chocolate or Nespresso coffee, the tasty treats they currently currently sell.

The two business partners, architects Andreia Salavessa, of ateliermob, and Zoraima de Figueiredo, of platform[az], aim to help develop the Anjos neighborhood by purchasing, as much as possible, fresh produce and goods locally. Zoraima’s uncle, Hélder Costa, with 40+ years of experience, trained the two partners. This Italian-style ice cream uses fresh ingredients and no artificial preserves or colorings. Flavors, especially the fruit ones, will vary according to the season, but the all-timers lime-mint, passion fruit, salted caramel and yogurt excel. A very close second come lemon, red berries, fig, strawberry and melon.

Decorating with bikes

Yesterday Ana talked about MINI's folding bike as a design piece. And how amazing it is! So today I'll keep with the bike theme...
Have you ever thought about using a bike as a decoration piece? You can use it in a room with a modern, industrial, bohemian or rural feel. Inside or outside. It can be the center piece for the room's decor and it can be an amazing one!
Hang it, put it in a corner, use all of it or just some parts... whatever you feel like doing! It just needs some imagination.
