With the prices and specs of high-end cameras coming down and the ability to shoot video on many DSLRs...35mm Adapters have lost some luster. Still those high-end camera prices may be lower, but they are still hefty. Camera's like the Red Scarlet that was just announce will still run you $10,000 and upward. DSLRs are awkward to film video with unless you purchase a pricey rig...not to mention severe rolling shutter and high compressed video which results in artifacts and lower quality. You can get great video from a consumer HD camera like the Canon HVXX cameras and a 35mm adapter. No matter which you choose they all have their downfalls, but the latter is relatively the best quality for the price. With that, JAG35 now makes a ton of accessories...many now aimed at DSLRs, but they still make a mean spinning 35mm adapter that won't break the bank. Below is some footage using the adapter.

Doing depth of field in post is very time consuming, but sometime you just need that look on your shot. the above is a technique similar to the one I have used in projects and have showcased in a previous post. Good stuff!

35mm adapters and the iPhone4

Some nice videos showing how to use the OWLE Bubo for the iPhone to attach a 35mm adapter. The Encinema adapter is used in the videos, however, any adapter could probably be utilized with the OWLE Bubo.

Just a quick tip for any DIY-ers out there. Sourcing parts is one of the biggest challenges when building a 35mm adapter. If you are building a vibrating adapter you need a mini vibrating motor. Both a pancake motor and a tube-style motor can work. If you don't want to spend any money on a motor then open up a discarded cell phone or pager(whats a pager? :)). You will most likely find a motor that is small and suitable for your 35mm adapter project.

Nice little video that explains why you would use a 35mm adapter. I don't agree with not building your own, it is a fun project for learning and with enough effort you can produce great results with a DIY adapter. Good stuff.
