It’s a giant three-dimensional billboard for Goody’s Kodak, which sits atop an abandoned building that used to house the photograph development business on Ponce De Leon ave. The sign itself is in bad shape, having deteriorated continuously through the years. I don’t know how long it’s been there, but it certainly has a quaint look. I expect the building, sign and all, to be raided soon and a condo tower to be built in its place – such is the trend in the city. Or at least it was, who knows how long will the economy keep hungry developers at bay.

The interesting thing is that it’s so much part of the landscape that I think the neighborhood takes it for granted and I don’t know of any effort to preserve it.

This abandoned elementary school building sits on the intersection of Huff Road and Earnest Street on the Westside. There’s an entire photo set on Flickr dedicated to it, and apparently, the Atlanta Public School system had the building up for sale. Given its current state, and the fact that the area has quite a few abandoned properties, I doubt anyone has acquired the property.

There is a large abandoned warehouse on the Westside, near Foster street. Access to the building is blocked by the Howard School campus, and the actual street it’s on is not listed on Google Maps. It’s visible from West Marietta street, which is where I took this photograph from.

Located in the historic Fairlie-Poplar district, off of Luckie Street in the heart of Georgia State University’s campus. The building was completed in 2002 and was designed by The Lord, Aech, & Sargent architecture firm.

The Equitable Building in Downtown Atlanta flanks the northern tip of Woodruff Park, along Peachtree street. According to its Wikipedia entry, it has 35 stories and it is 453 feet (138 m) tall. It was designed by the architectural firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill and completed in 1968.

Having spent five years in Georgia State University, I spent quite a bit of time walking around the park, and it always struck me as a stunning view to look up to the “EQUITABLE” label at the very top of the building. I wonder what font was used?

It reminds me in a way of the monolith in Stanley Kubric’s 2001 Space Odessy. No?

There used to be an older structure in its current location, also called the Equitable building, but it was demolished in 1971.
