Take with a pinch of salt or two, as usual. It always comforts me to think that there is a cure anyway, even if it is proven later that the announcement was not entirely accurate.

BBC News - 20% of new HIV cases in Northern Ireland are men over 45: "ave been rising for the past two years.

They are causing concern among doctors who are trying to reinforce the safe sex message.

Doctors at the Royal Victoria Hospital are also running clinics in gay clubs to try to convince hard to reach groups of the importance of testing.

David Evans reports on latest research and results from Washington

Progress and Controversies in Cure Research - David Evans: "been able to remain off treatment for several years with only very low levels of detectable virus. In essence, they look just like people on effective ARV therapy except that they are no longer taking any of the drugs."

As always, readers' comments are also interesting to keep an eye with people generally expressing their belief that a cure will be found or not, made available or not, however with little argumentation either way.

Dear Anonymous All,

Thank you all for your contributions and reactions. It is always a blessing, a joy, to hear from people who stumble across this blog lost in a sea of blogs.

I often read about how you view treatments, diet, love - whether in public comments or in private messages so I want to take a moment to tell you what I believe.

I believe it is important that:

1- You look after your diet and eat well to feel well. Over the years following my diagnosis, I quit smoking, made sure to drink in moderation (that's two glasses a week at most... never been a drinker really) and replenished my body with healthy whole nutrients. Did that beat HIV? Probably not. Did it help in sustaining a healthy body and a healhty mind? No doubt.

2- You find a treatment that works well for you and that you can adhere to. I have been on various combinations over the years with - thankfully- no major side effects. Currently Atripla serves me well.

3- You do not become complacent.

4- Keep hope. I thought I would be dead by now, that nobody would ever love me again and that I would be, at best, disfigured by the disease and the treatments. I am alive and well, I have a wonderful man in my life who doesn't pay too much attention to my status and I look pretty damn good. Growing older is another challenge altogether!

5 - Remember what works well for you does not necessarily work for others and vice versa. Try and try again.

.... The vivid dreams, the drowsiness, the weight gain, feeling like I'm losing my mind, working, staying strong, breaking down, side effects and no side effects, few people I can talk to and who'll understand, the cholesterol, the bowel movements, my kidneys and liver....
Other than that a new drug regimen means fewer side effects than my current combo, just one pill a day, more Cd4s....
Oh well, if you know the angst of switching meds pop me a line.

Attitudes to sex with HIV+ guys. I had a rather dramatic recent experience when I revealed my status to one of my casual sex buddies (I was casual to them anyway) so reading about these different reactions, seen from a negative guy's point of view, were interesting - if not new.

I don't find any jokes funny based on subject matter alone. But I certainly think a joke involving AIDS can be funny. To call whole topics "inappropriate" seems to me ridiculous. Much humor is based on personal pain, or is a way of dealing with the harsh realities of life. As Mel Brooks said, "Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you walk into an open sewer and die." Of course AIDS itself is not funny at all, and there's nothing funny about anyone actually having it. But it wouldn't be funny either if someone you knew actually fell into an open sewer and died. But the above quote is still funny as hell. You can't say you love black humor and be morally opposed to AIDS jokes in general. It's just illogical.

Image via WikipediaI can't decide whether I find more fascinating the talk by Seth Berkley or the stupidity of the comments in reaction to the video claiming vaccines kill more than the actual virus. OK, let's be faire. His talk is more fascinating, a lot more fascinating. We just need a breakthrough and it can happen any time.

By the way, TED is always great.

Excellent lesson from the excellent AIDSMEDS.COM with helpful diagram and plain English explanations which

1) makes sense of how Protease Inhibitors effect the virus differently from Nucleoside/Nucleotide Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NRTIs) and so on

2) shows that there are many ways to kill a virus

A recent announcement from the the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute:

The answer could be as simple as pumping up your body’s immune system. The potential cure has to do with a hormone called interleukin-7, which “reinvigorates” the body’s immune system when it’s faced with something as hard-core as HIV, or Hepatitis or Tuberculosis.
