There’s a reason they are one the most eaten meals in America. The simple combination base of beef and buns is reliably good! Like many good meals, a burger is one I refer to as a palette. Like an artists palette, it’s a meal that can be decorated with so many options and ways – whatever suits your fancy.

[caption id="attachment_22537" align="aligncenter" width="627" caption="Kookers Bacon Cheeseburger"][/caption]

My favorite burgers to prepare at home include avocado and salsa, mushrooms and Swiss and fried onions with chipotle mayo. When it comes to finding great burgers out and about in Barrington, I have long had a favorite place in Kooker's on route 14 just West of 59. This classic burger joint has everything you want from your hometown burger place and more.

It starts with friendly service when you walk in the door...

Every one of the many times I’ve been in Kooker's, I’ve been welcomed by owner Bill Seger with a warm greeting that includes a reference to either the bacon or the baseball he knows my 9-year old boy loves, just from getting to know him over the counter. Following the friendly chatter are accommodations of special orders, and tremendously quick service.

With burger boutiques being all the rage these days, I decided to challenge Bill on what they might have that Kooker's doesn’t...

In my opinion it’s not much, as Bill's shakes and malts are unbelievable, with fresher flavors and more variety, and well… as for burger toppings… “Jalapenos and BBQ?” I asked. “Sure” he replied. “The trendy bacon and fried egg?” I challenged. "In a heartbeat” he said “Just ask, I’ll make it”. Their extensive menu does, after all contain omelets made to order all day. It also includes things you will not find on a boutique menu, such as pork cutlet and fresh soups made daily, tacos and burritos in addition to throwback fried mushrooms, pizza puffs and sloppy joes.

The burgers at Kooker's are classic, as are the prices. They use high-quality beef from Orchard Prime Meats in Lake Zurich, a partnership they’ve had since Kooker's opened in 1990.

One thing you'll also find plenty of at Kooker's is parking and space for dining. They have two counters with bar stools, and many booths, including outdoor seating, plus a television and newspapers for your sports and other enjoyment.

And if you want the burgers brought to you, Kookers also offers catering and party services. Order for take out a large variety of platters including fried chicken and Italian Beef, or contract Kooker's to provide your party or outdoor event with hot dog carts, Weber grills, and a custom-made menu. Almost all parties are staffed by Bill himself, and his attention to customer desires and personability will add the nicest touch to your event.

As a travel journalist, now retired from the Chicago Tribune but still trekking on a freelance basis, I’ve photographed on all seven continents. I admit to a love affair with the American West and Southwest, but Antarctica without question is the most amazing place I've ever photographed."

"Silversmithing is a dying craft. There has been a decline in the appreciation of hand-labor and the value of the true, one of a kind object. I am a traditionalist at heart—a lover of antiquities and of objects made with only modest tools and a human being’s hands. I strive to keep alive an understanding of and an appreciation for one of a kind, hand made objects. The inspiration for my work comes from several areas: the ceremonial objects unearthed from centuries long past; the ideas of family heirlooms and treasured objects; and the knowledge that objects made from metal last forever and will survive long after I am gone."

Amdur Says: "Robert Farrell creates one of a kind fabricated objects using sterling silver, copper, namel, gold, gold leaf, nickel and various Japanese alloys."

I woke up feeling incredibly fortunate this morning after a dose of drama and a trip to Good Shepherd Hospital's Emergency Room last night. It all started while I was sending a quick email in my house late yesterday as my young kids played in the back yard.

My 2-year-old son, Billy, appeared at my side with bubbles in his mouth trying to spit out something that tasted bad. His breath smelled like gasoline and I panicked when I ran outside to find my 3-year-old daughter collecting flowers and leaves in this open and almost empty container...

The kids found the bottle on a ledge in our garage. Though Billy was acting normal, not knowing whether and how much brake fluid he ingested (and I'm cringing as I write this), I called poison control and was advised to take him straight to the emergency room.

When we sat down with the triage nurse, she called poison control. Because I had called them before leaving our home, they already had our information on hand and shared details with the nurse about the chemicals in that bottle. My heart dropped when the nurse told me Billy would probably be admitted to the hospital so they could monitor him overnight for kidney failure. But a blood test proved he was ok and, within a few hours, the doctor had released us and Billy was safe at home. I, on the other hand, am now suffering from a major case of parental guilt. So my antidote (my self-prescribed penance) is to brush up on a few tips for poison safety which I discovered after a quick Google search for "What to do when your child swallows brake fluid". (Gulp!) Five tips jumped out at me (from this website) as things to never forget:

1. Never leave potentially poisonous household products unattended while in use. Many exposures occur when an adult takes a moment to answer the telephone or doorbell.

2. Remember that there is no such thing as a 'safe zone' when it comes to poisoning. National statistics indicate that 41 percent of poisoning accidents occur in the kitchen, followed by 26 percent in the garage or basement, 21 percent in the bathroom and 12 percent in the bedroom. Interestingly, many poisonings occur during a family's move to a new home, when potentially hazardous items are on the floor or easy to reach.

3. Avoid taking medicine in front of children, as they tend to copy the actions of adults. Also, never refer to medicine as 'candy' and always follow exact dosage directions in giving children medications.

4. Store pesticides in a locked cabinet or garden shed. A recent survey by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency revealed that almost half (47 percent) of all households with children under the age of 5 had at least one pesticide stored in an unlocked cabinet and less than four feet off the ground.

5. Know the botanical names of all plants inside and outside your home. Some plants and flowers can be toxic if eaten. If you don't know the name of a plant, have it identified at the nearest gardening center in your area.

To be proactive and get regular reminders about poison safety tips, I found and "Liked" the Illinois Poison Center's Facebook page, which you'll find by clicking HERE.

I also downloaded the Poison Control Center App for my iPhone which allows you to contact the center with the click of a button. You'll find that app by clicking HERE and you can reach them directly at this phone number: 1-800-222-1222.

In 2011, the Illinois Poison Center handled 86,680 calls to their hotline. About 50 percent of the poison exposure calls handled by the IPC last year involved children ages 5 and under.

For me, the moral of the story is this: Never let work, emails, the phone or doorbell distract you from watching your kids - even for one second. And, even if you've childproofed your home, periodically review where all toxic materials may have been moved to and don't forget to take time to talk with your spouse about plans for poison safety.

Now that it's a new day, I'll admit that I'm <del>a little</del> a LOT more paranoid. But at least I'm reminded that no job, no requests, no deadlines, NOTHING IN THE WORLD is more important to me than the safety of my kids.

[caption id="attachment_22290" align="aligncenter" width="627" caption="Courtesy of Susan McConnell Photography"][/caption]

Susan will be teaching a series of classes out of her downtown Barrington photography studio at 110 E. Main Street. The well lit space is equipped with the photography and technology tools of Susan's trade which she'll use to help teach these classes....

She's keeping the class sizes deliberately small so there will be plenty of opportunities for Susan's one-on-one approach to teaching. The classes are being offered for adults as well as middle and high schoolers. Susan sums up her school's mission with this simple statement:

"Photographing the people we love and the places we frequent; photography is a part of everyone’s life now. At Musée, we’re passionate about photography and digital media and we’re passionate about passing on our knowledge so that your photographs can be all they are supposed to be … all that you need them to be. Taking great photographs from the start, that’s important. Using editing tools to turn your images into something spectacular, that’s even more important. And then using those images along with your voice, that’s the ultimate."

Cucumbers are a solid staple in my household, an item that I refer to as a Smart ingredient. It’s Smart because they always get eaten (don’t rot in the crisper!), and can round out SO many meals for my family. Both my kids and I will eat cucumber slices just as a snack. Think crunchy, like chips! They are a main ingredient in two of my favorite salads, (recipes below) 4 other salads in my salads cookbook, they add a great texture and liveliness to many of my kids favorite sandwiches, such as turkey and bacon, or ham and lettuce.

For me, not much beats a hummos and cheese sandwich with a slice of cucumber. Hummus and cucumber also combine to create two of my favorite appetizers: traditional cucumber dill toasts, and the other a Mediterranean Veggie dip where you top a plate of hummus with cucumbers, Italian parsley, feta cheese, tomatoes and kalamata olives.

Cucumbers are extremely low in calories, and a strong source of fiber, potassium which helps reduce blood pressure and heart rates by countering effects of sodium and vitamin K, which improves bone strength.

Here are two of my favorite pasta salads. Both benefit from the lightness and crunch of cucumbers:

Spicy Peanut Noodle Salad

Ingredients
6 tablespoons peanut butter
1/4 cup chicken broth
3 tablespoons white vinegar
3 tablespoons soy sauce
1 1/2 tablespoons sugar...

1 tablespoon minced ginger
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
8 ounces linguine
1 large orange bell pepper, cut into matchstick-size strips
1 cup cucumber, peeled, seeded and thinly sliced
1/2 cup chopped green onions
5 large lettuce leaves
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
1/4 cup chopped salted peanuts (optional)

Combine first 8 ingredients in small bowl; whisk to blend. Set dressing aside. Cook pasta in large pot of boiling salted water until just tender but still firm to bite, stirring occasionally. Drain pasta; rinse with cold water and drain again. Transfer pasta to medium bowl. Add bell pepper and green onions. Toss salad with dressing. Season with salt and pepper. Line serving bowl with lettuce leaves. Transfer salad to prepared bowl. Sprinkle with cilantro and peanuts.

For the first time since publishing her children's book, Princess Shayna’s Invisible Visible Gift 15 years ago, Tower Lakes author, Sheila Glazov, will have the honor of watching a musical rendition of the story brought to life on stage this Sunday night. Performers with Lake Zurich’s Trilogy School of Performing Arts have prepared a special interpretation of the book, which is a "family fairy tale" about a young princess created to help children of all ages build self esteem.

The musical version of Princess Shayna’s Invisible Visible Gift was adapted shortly after Sheila published the book’s second edition to include paragraphs about bullying in schools. She wrote the story as a "fairy tale version" of her popular adult book examining behavior and relationships called, What Color is Your Brain? A Fun and Fascinating Approach to Understanding Yourself and Others.

Sheila Glasov is an internationally-known author who has appeared on major television networks and in several magazines to discuss her innovative books. With a Bachelors degree in education, she has spent many years in the classroom, teaching students in grade school, high school and beyond.

But the musical's producers say we shouldn't expect to see a carbon copy of every other fairy tale at Sunday's unique performance. Princess Shayna is a different kind of heroine with loving parents that encourage her to be a self-confident young lady. She is a realistic character who also deals with type 1 diabetes -a concept inspired by Sheila's son, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at fifteen years of age.

On Sunday, watch Princess Shayna embark on her vision quest to help the “blue,” “green,” “yellow” and “orange” villages from the "Kingdom of Kindness" respect one another and cheer her on as she overcomes bullying and bad attitudes from some of the colorful characters she encounters.

In the story, “blue” villagers reflect creative personalities; “green” villagers reflect logical thinkers; “yellow” villagers reflect organized individuals; and “orange” villagers reflect fun-loving characters. It’s Princess Shayna’s mission to give them the gift of understanding to unite.

Since giving the green light to Trilogy’s Executive Director, Anna Berman, to translate the book into a musical, Sheila has been enthusiastically dedicated to supporting the young cast’s fun-loving performance from start to finish. The production will be performed by Trilogy’s cast of 20 fifth through eighth graders and directed by musical theater teacher Kim Kass.

The Princess Shayna’s Invisible Visible Gift performance will take place this Sunday, May 20, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Middle School North in Hawthorn Woods. You'll find the school at 95 Hubbard Lane. Tickets will be available at the door for $10. Autographed copies of the book can be purchased at the performance. As the mother of a child with diabetes, Sheila allocates 10% of the royalties from the sale of her books to several diabetes research, education and treatment nonprofit organizations. For more information about the book and author, visit Sheila's website at SheilaGlasov.com.

[caption id="attachment_22189" align="aligncenter" width="627" caption="Countryside Cares Student Committee, Courtesy of Kelly Henry"][/caption]

Walk On Farm is a horseback riding center on Cuba Road in Barrington devoted to making life easier for people with disabilities. Families who live many miles from Barrington drive their kids to Walk On weekly to experience the joy of horseback riding and the confidence and strength it builds in special needs riders like Danielle Sulaski from Aurora, Illinois.

Danielle is living with Cerebral Palsy after suffering a stroke at birth. Danielle's grandfather, Bob Hunt, says she’s a different girl when she loses her walker and climbs on a horse.

"Her head lifts higher. Her posture improves. She’s in control, she’s smiling and she’s loving every minute of it."

Today is my fourth Mother's Day celebrating the holiday as a mom. I have three children, age three and under, and the one thing I know for sure is that I have A LOT to learn about raising kids. How I wish there were a manual with all the answers and the best way to react when your 3-year-old daughter says, "Mommy, I DO NOT love you to the moon and back." Making things up as I go is my motherhood M.O. So I decided to turn to local moms I look up to for a little advice, starting with my own mom, Suzanne.

[caption id="attachment_21933" align="aligncenter" width="600" caption="Suzanne & Liz Luby, circa 1974"][/caption]

For tips on how to be a better mom, I decided the best question for the pros is this:

"What do you know now about how to be a good mom that you wish you knew when your first baby was born and are there any secrets you've picked up along the way?"

My own mom, Suzanne Luby, answered that question by saying, "Being a mother isn't a job with a start and a finish. It's an ongoing process filled with joy, discovery and wonder." (To me, that sounds like the "nice" way to put it ;)) Read on for more priceless words of wisdom and a Mother's Day gift from ten Barrington women on that "ongoing process" of motherhood...

Anne Lee - Mother of Two

(Seen here with her daughter, Laura Horak, another mom living here in Barrington)

In offering advice, Anne looked back to the days when her kids were much younger.
"I wouldn't really toot their horn. I looked at it as bragging and I think, as a result, I stymied myself. I have had the thought that, if I were to do it all over again, I would have offered more public praise of my children. I think that, to me, the ultimate goal as a mother really is to build this healthy self concept and self awareness in our kids to help them be comfortable in their own skin and believe in who they are."

Anne is a community leader and part of the support team behind her husband, Bob Lee's Ride for 3 Reasons, a 2,500 bike ride he plans to take this fall. Bob will ride from Vancouver, Canada to Tijuana, Mexico to raise $1 million for three charities, the American Cancer Society, the Les Turner ALS Foundation and Hospice Palliative Care of Northeastern Illinois.

"Leading by example is the most important thing about being a mother. Children emulate your behavior. Looking back, I would have eaten a lot healthier. Used less swear words. Breathed deeply and counted to ten before I reacted (or over-reacted) to a situation or two. Having three teenage daughters, I can confirm that they grow up too fast!

Lemon Crepes

4 servings (8 crepes)
Popular in Australia, Breakfast Lemon Crepes are light, zesty and easy to make. I love that lemon pairs with so many other flavors, so can be served with many fruits, paired with a frittata (visit www.organizingdinner.com for recipe) and are easy to make. Feel free to use Meyer lemons, regular lemons or any other citrus fruit you prefer.

Ingredients:
• 3 tablespoons butter, melted
• 1 cup milk
• 1 cup flour
• 2 large eggs
• Dash salt
• 1 cup of water
• 1/3 cup of sugar
• 1/2 lemon, sliced
• Juice of 1/2 lemon
• 2 tablespoons white sugar

Blend milk, flour, eggs, 2 tablespoons melted butter, and salt. Blend until smooth, then chill, covered for 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, make the lemon syrup by simmering water and sugar in a small saucepan over a medium heat. Stir to dissolve sugar. Add slices and juice of lemon and bring to a boil. Turn down to medium low and simmer gently for about 10-12 minutes or until the mixture thickens to form a syrup. Remove from heat and set aside.

Lightly brush a 10-inch non-stick skillet with some of reserved butter and heat over medium heat until hot. Pour in 1/4 cup batter, immediately tilting and rotating skillet to coat bottom, and cook crêpe. Turn once and cook until just set and golden for about 1 minute in total. Repeat. Sprinkle the inside of each crêpe with a little sugar, then fold. Just before serving, drizzle on some lemon syrup and garnish with lemon slices or wedges.

Potato Omelet

In Spain, the potato omelet is one of the most popular dishes not just for brunch, but any time of day. I love its simplicity, and yet how well it pairs with many different toppings and sides such as avocadoes, salsa, bacon, salads and more.

Ingredients:
• 4 medium potatoes, peeled
• 1/2 yellow onion
• 4 large eggs
• 1/4 cup olive oil
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1/4 teaspoon pepper

Cube potatoes into 1/4-inch pieces. Combine potatoes and onions and season with salt and pepper. In a large, heavy, non-stick frying pan, heat the olive oil on medium heat. Cook potatoes and onions in oil until tender (another option is to boil or microwave potatoes until tender, then add to pan with onions & oil for browning). Remove from the pan with a slotted spoon or spatula and allow oil to drain. Whisk eggs, combine with potatoes and onions. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in frying pan, and slowly pour in egg mixture.

When the mixture has browned on the bottom, place a large plate upside down over the frying pan. Flip the omelet out onto the plate. Return pan to stove, and add just enough oil to cover the bottom and sides of the pan. Slide the omelet into the frying pan. Use the spatula to shape the sides of the omelet. Let the omelet cook for 3-4 minutes.
