A crochet mitten pattern for kids aged 6-10ish! There's a reason why I'm so excited about this, it's because I searched tirelessly for a free mitten pattern that would fit a 6 year old girl... and couldn't find one. Okay, well I did find two patterns, but they were boring, bland and a bit confusing. It seems there are so many free patterns for babies, toddlers and adults, but we skip an entire age range. So here I am, I wrote my own. Luckily I have a 6 and a 10 year old available to try them on and test them out! Now these will probably fit a child maybe a year younger and maybe a year older, that's why I say 6-10ish. These will almost fit myself, just slightly small. If I added a few more rounds here and there, I could make them adult size.

That all being said, there are ways you can change this pattern up a bit if you'd like to. I used two colors and made use of the Berry Stitch. But, you can just use one color throughout, or use several different colors. You can also omit the berry stitch entirely and just keep repeating the other rounds instead. So many ideas!

This pattern is written showing color changes for 2 colors and is explained throughout the pattern. There is a lot of repetition in instructions for the rounds, but the color changes for those rounds. However, this is a super simple pattern! Here we go...

Yarn: Medium Worsted Weight (4)

Crochet hooks: 4.5mm and 5.0mm

Other: Yarn Needle to sew in ends, scissors

Stitches Used: Ch=Chain, Sc=Single Crochet, Sl st= Slip stitch, Berry St=Berry Stitch (described in pattern)

Cuff: 2 inches top to bottom, approx. 3.25 inches wide

Hand: width= 3.5 inches, length= 6.25 inches

With crochet Hook size 4.5mm:

Ch9

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 7 sts.

Rows 2-21: Ch1, turn; (working in back loops only) sc in next 8 sts.

Row 22 (Join): Ch1, turn; fold 1st row up over last row, line up the stitches, and sc though both ch sts of Row 1 and back loops of row 21.

Turn inside out. (This is the right side)

Do not fasten off!

HAND (worked in joined rounds, without turning.)

With crochet hook size 5.0mm:

Rnd 1: Working in row ends around the top of the cuff, ch1, (sc in next 10 row ends, 2 sc in next end) twice. Sl st in 1st sc to join. (24sc)

Rnd 2: Ch1, (sc in next 11 sts, 2 sc in next st) twice, sl st in 1st sc to join. (26sc)

Rnd 3: Attach Color B, drop Color A (do not fasten off) Ch1, (berry st *see below* in next st, sc in next st) 13 times, sl st in 1st st to join.

Berry Stitch = insert hook into next st, yarn over and pull through st (2 loops on hook), [yarn over and pull through 1 loop on hook] twice (2 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through both loops on hook. -This creates a raised or bumped stitch, pull the stitch forward.

Rnd 4: Pick up Color A, drop Color B (do not fasten off): Ch1, sc in next 26 sts, sl st in 1st sc to join.

** From this point on, an A or B at the beginning of the round means to switch to color A or B, dropping opposite color behind for pick up in next round**

Rnd 5B: Ch1, sc in next 26 sts, sl st in 1st sc to join.

Rnd 6A: Ch1, (berry st in next st, sc in next st) 13 times, sl st in 1st st to join.

What a crazy time it's been! I hope everyone is doing ok and making the best of the situations we are in. Some of you may have had the time to sit back and crochet (you are so lucky!), but some like me, may be flat our busy with other work. I've never really stopped crocheting or designing, just scaled back. I've been having a hard time finding "time" to spend writing and editing. I work in the home decorating and paint industry as a market manager full time and it's been a wild ride these past two years. Who knew that a pandemic would cause a construction and home reno boom?! I'm tired. I'm exhausted. My mental health has taken a hit.

I've been reflecting on the things that I love, that have unfortunately been put on hold or been non prioritized as I work my ass off to make other people rich and happy. Such is life.

Every year at Christmas time, I crochet something for my employees as a gift. I almost didn't do it this year! Until a couple weeks ago an employee asked me if she could hire me to make a pair of mittens for her daughter. I said sure, that should be fairly easy and quick. Then she said, "I'm going to have to find myself some new gloves soon too, but daughter comes first."

I had a lightbulb moment! I spent the next couple of days secretly analyzing my staffs' hands :D One week later I have crocheted 4 pairs of gloves, 2 men's and 2 women's for my wonderful employees. And I loved every minute of it! I felt like me again. It felt good!

God I missed crocheting!

I almost forgot about it, until recently, because I was going through my free patterns list and creating a photo collage of my patterns. As of now, it is no longer available anywhere but here!! How to Crochet a CHUNKY Broomstick Lace Headband

Small Ball of Chunky (Size 5) Yarn

Size 20mm Large Knitting Needle

Filmed on a quiet evening while sick with a cold in a nice hotel room in Toronto, Ontario! I was there for work, but I took advantage of the quiet time. I had planned on speaking, but my voice was so raspy from the sickness, I decided I should probably do a text over instead.

Don't be afraid of broomstick lace! In this video, I am using 3 loops, but you can make broomstick lace with 1 up to 5 loops. It really depends on what you are making. I can't wait to share more videos with you soon!

Venetian Hanging Plant Holder

I have loved the Venetian Lace square for a very long time. There's SO much you can do with it. I will get into those other projects another day, but today I am going to show you my hanging plant holders!

It's a bit inspired by macrame, though I love crochet much more. This pattern can easily be adjusted to fit various different plant pots by adjusting your yarn (or thread) and hook. You are going to have to play with setting your gauge to get a specific size, but to be honest, I just winged it and both sizes that I made worked out perfect!

The first hanging plant holder I made, I used a size 3.5mm crochet hook and worsted weight size 4 cotton crafting yarn. Each square measures approximately 6 inches.

For the second plant holder, I used a size 2.00mm crochet hook and size 10 crochet thread. Each square measures about 4 inches.

Just remember that these will stretch!

The length of the straps is entirely up to you!

THE PATTERN - you will be making five squares and joining as you go. The straps are made all in one piece at the end by making simple chains and slip stitches. The tassel on the bottom is optional. (I used it on my big holder, but not on the small one)

So let's get going, first you have to learn how to make the Venetian Lace Square. (Already know how to make one? Awesome, this will be easy for you!)

Venetian Lace Square #1:

CENTRE:

Row 1: Ch 19, dc in 7th ch from hook, (ch2, skip next 2 chs, dc in next ch) 4 times.

Rows 2-5: Ch5, turn (counts as 1dc and ch2); skip 2 chs, dc in next st, (ch2, skip 2 sts, dc in next st) 4 times.

Do not fasten off.

SIDES

Side 1:

Row 1: Ch1, working in the dc/ch2 spaces to the left, work 4sc in next 4 spaces; leave the remaining space unworked.

Row 2: Ch12, turn; (Wrong Side Facing) skip over 11 sc, sl st in next sc.

Row 3: Ch1, turn; (Right Side Facing) work 3sc in ch 12 space, (ch3-this is a picot-, 3sc) in ch12 space, 5 times, work 4sc in the remaining dc/ch2 space from Row 1.

Row 4: Ch9, turn; (Wrong Side Facing), (skip over next picot and sl st in next picot) twice, ch9, skip over last picot and sl st in the very last sc at the corner.

Row 5: Ch1, turn; (Right Side Facing), [4sc in ch9 space, (picot, 4sc in ch 9 space) 3 times], repeat [ to ] for next 2 ch9 spaces. Do not fasten off.

Sides 2-4: Repeat instructions for first side.

Fasten off.

Now you will be making 4 more Venetian Squares, but joining as you go.

Square 2:

Follow same instructions as Side 1, up until the 3rd side. You will be joining the 3rd and 4th side to Square 1 as follows:

Work the first loop of three as usual.

Second loop: work the 1st picot as usual, work the next two picots into the matching picots from Side 1. Instead of ch3; --ch1, sl st into the adjoining picot from Side 1, ch1--.

Third loop: Work joining picots for the next 2 picots, work the third picot as usual (unjoined).

3rd Side Complete

4th Side: Work 1st picot unjoined, join next 2 picots from the first loop, join next 2 picots from the second loop, work 3rd picot unjoined of second loop, work third loop all picots unjoined.

Make and join the 3rd square same as second square.

Now for the Fourth square, you are joining ALL sides! Work and join the first two sides as you did the last 2 squares.

Now join the 3rd and 4th sides of square 4 into the very first 2 sides from Square One! This makes the sides to the plant holder.

Fifth Square: Now this one gets a little tricky! You are joining all sides to the bottom sides of the first 4 squares. Just pay attention to where you're joining and all we be ok! Match picot to picot, and keep an eye out for the picots that don't join (these are the ones on each side of the tips of the centre squares or diamonds)

Then I went camping.........

And worked on it there......

all 4 sides joined to the bottom!

STRAPS:

The straps are all worked in one piece! For the large holder, I chained 91, and the small one, I chained 151.

Side 1: Ch 91 (151)** chain however long you want your straps**, The extra chain is your turning chain; join to the top of any square, in the 3rd picot from the diamond tip.

Slip stitch back up 25 stitches; ch25, skip over 2 picots, and join in the next picot to the left.

Slip stitch back up 25 chs, chain in remaining chains all of the way back to where you started. DO NOT FASTEN OFF!!!

Sides 2-4: Repeat instructions for First Strap. (There are 4 picots between each set of straps)

The long chains meet at the top.

When all 4 sides are complete, sl st in the very first st and fasten off!

Sew in ends.

Tassel (Optional): Cut strands of yarn double length, because you will fold them over. Cut as many as you like, and tie them into the very centre of the bottom square. I made one strand of yarn a lot longer and used that strand to wrap neatly around the other strands. I also frayed the strands apart by pulling the plies of yarn apart and combed them.

The Whirly Top! -a free crochet pattern & Scheepjes Whirl Review

I know… it's been a while since I've posted any patterns. Life's been busy. Between my full time job and family life at home, I've been struggling to keep up with my blogging and pattern writing. I've never stopped crocheting, and have a notebook full of patterns and notes over the past year that I'd love to be able to bring out of hiding. From hats (lots of hats!) to clothing patterns, today… I am bringing you a fun twist (pun intended) on a cute crochet top!

A few weeks ago, I was invited by Yarn Canada to review a yarn called “Whirl” by Scheepjes. Immediately, I had to check this out online to see if it was a good fit for me. Scheepjes Whirl is a fingering weight yarn cake that is available in 15 beautiful color variations. I was impressed! I chose “Watermelon Hell Raiser” not just because it has a cool name, but it looks cool too!

So I accepted the invite to review. I've been on this crochet home décor kick lately and have been making plant holders, baskets, etc, and thought that I was going to use this yarn for a lacy plant holder pattern I'd been writing. Then the yarn arrived… There was no way I could use this beauty of a yarn cake on something small like a plant holder… this yarn needs to go into something epic!

The Whirl yarn cake, as I already mentioned, is a fingering weight yarn and there's a lot of it! One cake would easily work into a large shawl. The color changes in this yarn are very long! It is not variegated, but works from one color, changing gradually as an ombre effect into another color; in my case going from black to dark pink. So I needed a big project, like a shawl, but although I love making shawls, I just never wear them; and this is a project that I want to keep for myself.

I'd been toying with this crochet dress idea in my head for a while that features a twisted bustline and an empire waist. I was just undecided on what yarn I was going to use. So now is better than ever, why not use this yarn for this project?! I knew I probably wouldn't get an entire dress out of this project, but a really cute top (and I can always add onto it later). One more Whirl cake would make a dress!

I will go onto the pattern here in a moment, but first, I want to tell you about this yarn!

Scheepjes Whirl is a very fun yarn to work with! It features a generous twist of color fibres that gradually change as you go. It is perfect for crochet or knit garments as it drapes beautifully and feels light and airy, which I especially love! I chose a color called “Watermelon Hell Raiser”. I was torn between this color and one called “Dandelion Muchies”, although they are all absolutely stunning color combinations!

The yarn itself glides along nicely and works up quickly. I found myself working like a madwoman, because it's exciting to get to the next color change! I started my project with the outside of the cake so that black would be on the top of my garment, although you could start from the center with the dark pink instead if you wanted. So starting with black, the color changes turn to variants of black/gray to gray,... to gray/pale pink,... to pale pink,... to pale/pink/dark pink,... all of the way to dark pink. Things started getting really exciting when I started seeing the gray to pale pink!

Would I use this yarn again? YES, absolutely! It's pricey but highly worth it! (I am very appreciative that I got to try this for free!) No other yarns I've ever used compare to this cool ombre effect in a fingering weight yarn. The twist of color fibres make the yarn! And not to mention, this is a big ball… there's a lot of yarn to complete most projects. I doubt you'd run out.

I rate Scheepjes Whirl a 5 out of 5 Stars! I can't wait to try another color combo because it's so fun to work with!

All of that being said, here's more about my pattern….

I wrote this pattern to fit me. I would consider myself a size large. So all specs in this pattern are to accommodate this size. You can easily adjust the size by decreasing the vertical rows at the top. Just keep in mind that when you remove rows from one side, you need to also remove the same amount from the other side. If you're going to do this, read through the pattern first and look at the photos so that it all makes sense. Also for other sizing, you may run into trouble when you get to the chevron lace, as you need a certain stitch count to make it work. Just make sure it is divisible by 16. You can add a stitch here and there when you get to the part under the bust to make it work. In my pattern, I have 224 stitches under the bust, divided by 16 is 14 repeats
(chevrons), so a smaller size at 13 chevrons, you would need to have 208 stitches, and a larger size would require 240 stitches (15 chevrons). Someday I may go through and size this up, but as for now, I am just excited to show you my project!

Materials Used:

YARN: 1 ball Scheepjes Whirl - a cake yarn with a generous twist making it easy to work with and knit up fast. A mix of cotton and acrylic and a fingering weight this yarn has a beautiful drape and will create garments that are lightweight and breathable. ---Attach to Part 1- Row 1 with a slip stitch and chain 14.

Rows 2-46: Following the same directions from Part 1, except joining at the end/beginning of each row from Part 1.

How to join:

For the end of rows that join to Part 1 (all odd numbered rows); join by working the second yarn over of the last dc through the top of the dc from the same row in Part 1.

For the beginning of rows that join to Part 1 (all even numbered rows); join by working the 3rd ch from the beginning ch3 through the top of the dc from the same row in Part 1.

Rows 47-58: Same instructions from Part 1 with NO JOINING! (This allows for the crossover)

Crossover & Join

-Pull the unjoined part from Part 2 down across the 1st part (see photo)
-Skip over 12 Rows from part 1 and join with a slip stitch to the bottom of stitch of the next row.

Row 59: Ch2, sl st in the top of the same dc from part 1, dc in next 11 sts.

Rows 60-104: Continue to follow same directions as Part 1, except joining at the end/beginning of each row.

DO NOT FASTEN OFF!

EDGING -You are now working along the edges ( the row ends) of the entire piece.

(Bottom) Ch1, work 2sc in each row end (the dc or ch3 space from the beginning/ends of each short row), making sure to follow the edge, switching to the opposite part in the center. You should have 108sc. Fasten off.

(Top) Repeat instructions for opposite side.

(Optional), Ch1, turn, work and rsc (Reverse Single Crochet aka Crab

BACK SEAM -Turn work wrong side facing, and sl st both short edges together to join. (12 sts)

STRAPS -you are attaching the yarn to the front top of the garment and working back and forth in short rows to meet the back of the garment.

NOTE: I used a different yarn here. I knew I wouldn't have enough of the Whirl yarn left, so I grabbed a ball of stash with a sort of matching color. So the amount of rows in the straps depend on which yarn you use!

Lay garment flat with back facing. Measure in 4 inches from center and attach yarn with a sl st to the top of garment.

Row 1: Ch1, sc in next 4 sts to the left (or however wide you'd like your straps)

Rows 2-??(stop when your strap measures 14 inches un-stretched): Ch1, turn; sc in next 4 sts.

Last Row: Measure in 4 inches from the center back and work through 4 sts along the top, fasten off.

Sew in ends.

Repeat for second strap.

TIE CORD (Optional) - Note: I tried this, but decided I liked it better without.

Simply make a chain as long as you need. Turn and work an sc in each ch. Fasten off, Sew in ends.

Pull the tie through the tie loops on the sides of the top under the bust.

Yes, I know, I know.... I haven't been posting here much as of the past year! Honestly, I just haven't had the time, or the time to even crochet (gasp!) I am working full time as an assistant market manager for a well known paint company, and.... for myself- always the entrepreneur- as owner, maker, mixer, marketer, manager, shipper, et etc etc for my nail polish company, Atlantic Elixir. Jute Web Hula Hoop Mandala -free crochet pattern-

This is my second hula hoop mandala that I've made from jute! I made my first one last fall, when hula hoops were 'out of season' and it was almost impossible to find one! When I did find one, it had a bend in the hoop, I bought it anyway at a discount, and tried to get the bend out, but it came back and sorta ruined the look of my mandala.... that being said, this is the best time of year to buy hula hoops (spring!) This lovely is hanging on my black wall right now. Although it makes for great and interesting wall art, it is going to make its way outside and hang from my garden shed (that I need to paint first).

This mandala is not hard to make, just a bit rough on the hands! You can easily make one in a few hours. If I could give jute a yarn weight, I'd say it's bulky or chunky. The hula hoop is one of the larger ones, although you could use a smaller one and simply adjust the number of stitches, as long as it's in multiples of 5. You begin by working cluster stitches over the hoop... Cluster stitches allow for a fan effect, because you want your working stitches facing the inner side of the hoop. If you work just basic stitches around the hoop to begin, you will have too many stitches on the inner ring and it will be all bunched up and ripply, too less and you will have gaps and see the color of the hoop peeking through; (unless you want to paint your hoop first, but who has time for that!) clusters make more loops to cover the hoop, yet one stitch. This will make more sense once you get going!

Beginning Round on Hoop: This is the most time consuming part...

Work a sl st on the hoop; work a *5sc cluster* (see below). Repeat 112 times; sl st in first cluster st to join. Make sure your "working" stitches are facing the inner side of the hoop, pull your work to make sure it's even and have no large gaps of hoop showing.

Tip: For tension, it doesn't have to be super tight, but not so loose that it looks bunchy. You want your stitches to be able to slide around the hoop when you pull on them, but not sliding around without pulling on them!!

5sc Cluster= *Work your hook under the hoop, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through first loop on hook** 4 times, work your hook under the hoop, pull up a loop, pull through all 6 loops on the hook.

pull through all 6 loops on hook to close the cluster stitch

Rnd 1: Turn; ch3, *5tr cluster, ch7** 22 times, sl st in 1st st to join.

5tr-Cluster= *yarn over twice, insert hook into next st, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook, yarn over, pull through next 2 loops on hook** 5 times, (6 loops remaining on hook), yarn over, pull through all 6 loops on hook.

Rnd 2: Do not turn; sc in same st as join, ch2 (counts as 1tr); *ch5, skip 7 chs, tr in next cluster st** 21 times, ch5, skip 7 chs, sl st in 2nd ch of beg ch2 to join.

Rnd 3: Do not turn; sc in same st as join, ch2 (counts as 1 tr), *ch3, skip 5 chs, tr in next tr** 21 times, ch3, skip 5 chs, sl st in 2nd ch of beg ch2 to join.
