137.12 Movies In The Park: The Princess of Mononoke

Movies in the park are some of the most popular events I post about. I guess something about a free movie under the Austin sky is pretty appealing, especially with this weather.

Tonight’s movie is an anime film that broke box office records in Japan. Anime fans love this flick, so it should draw a fairly decent crowd at Republic Square Park.

This week there’s also an extra treat! Be Yoga will be there before the movie offering some free yoga prior to showtime. It’s the perfect way to get relaxed, take in the Austin sunset and then enjoy the movie.

136.12 Ride of The Dead: Monster & Zombie Bike Ride

Zombies, monsters and ghouls will be cruising all over town tonight, and you could be among them!

The Ride of the Dead will feature some pre-ride food at Live Oak, a stop by Jackalope to grab a beer, and finish up at Spiderhouse Café to watch scary flicks. They’ve put together a collection of terrifying movie trailers for your enjoyment.

Tonight’s event is a social ride, so you don’t have to be an expert cyclist. The total course will end up being about 4.5 miles. So just have fun and make sure to put on your creepiest costume!

135.12 Turf N Surf Po’ Boy

There’s nothing like good seafood to get you past that midday slump, and this trailer is the perfect place to find it. You can’t miss it. They’ll be blaring tunes, likely Jimmy Buffett, and the trailer is actually a rusted old ship container that has been decked out with an island flare.

This place is a little pricey, but worth every penny. Their menu has a little bit of everything, and the po’ boys and tacos are amazing. Per the chef’s recommendation, I had the blackened mahi mahi tacos. They were huge and extremely delicious.

Chef/owner Ralph Gilmore is one of the nicest guys, so strike up a conversation with him while you’re waiting on your lunch.

Cooking must run in the family. Ralph’s brother is Jack Gilmore of Jack Allen’s Kitchen and his nephew is Barley Swine owner and chef, Bryce Gilmore. I would love to attend the Gilmore’s Thanksgiving dinner. I bet it’s one heck of a spread.

134.12 Zax Restaurant & Bar

I feel like Zax is one of those places that really flies under the radar here in Austin. I live within walking distance, and I just discovered this place. I love it!

The atmosphere is nice; the food is great, and they have a fantastic drink menu. Great outdoor seating is always a plus, and their outdoor patio is precious. The location is unbeatable. It’s in that central part of town where you can have dinner and then decide if you want to head down to South Congress or make your way downtown.

They are truly worth checking out. Since I discovered this place I’ve been there at least once a week, and nothing I’ve had on the menu has been disappointing!

133.12 Mother’s Day Concert at the Capitol

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there! I hope you’re spending it with the ones you love.

If you’re lucky enough to have your mom close by, The Austin Symphonic Band is providing the perfect way to wind down the evening. This free concert is on the lawn of the capitol, and they’ll be playing some of your favorite tunes as the sun sets over Austin. Don’t forget to bring your cameras because between the sunset, the capitol and family time, you’re sure to get a great shot!

Special shout out to my mom, Happy Mother’s Day! I love you so much, and I’m so grateful for all the support, encouragement and love you unconditionally give me.

Art of the Pot is back for its 9^th annual studio tour. They were founded in 2004 with a goal to bring more interest to the contemporary art scene here in Austin. The tour has grown tremendously over the years and has even been recognized nationally.

This event showcases some of our local talent, and all the pieces are very unique and creative. It’s cool to see the results of projects people are passionate about, and it shows in their work. This event is going on tomorrow as well, so it would be a fun way to spend sometime with your Mom if you’re looking for a free Mother’s Day activity to enjoy.

131.12 Austin Vintage Style Festival

The first Vintage Style Festival debuted in Austin in November, and it’s back in all of it’s old-school glory!

This town loves vintage anything, and this is a perfect place to find cool stuff. It also encourages people to keep it local by checking out vintage shops and boutiques around town.

Participants are also encouraged to dress the part! So bring your best swing, mod, Hollywood glam, disco wear – whatever vintage means to you.

Wristband holders will be able to take advantage of complimentary food and beverages, discounts, special contests and giveaways.

Wristbands: $10 (you do not need a wristband to attend)
