Navigating the CO 119 corridor during construction doesn’t have to be complicated. Whether you prefer to share the ride, take transit, or travel by bike, there are convenient, reliable, and efficient options to help you move through the region with less stress.

This guide highlights the options available during the CO 119 Safety, Mobility & Bikeway project and provides resources to help you plan your commute with confidence. Let’s explore the options that can make your trip smoother, safer, and more sustainable.

Carpool and Vanpool

Vanpooling is ride sharing with extra sharing with extra benefits for both commuters and employers. Vanpooling is the perfect commute option for commuters who travel more than 15 miles to work one-way. Passengers share the ride in a van which seats five to 15 people and pay a monthly fee that covers the cost of fuel, insurance, and vehicle maintenance.

Carpooling encompasses two or more people sharing a ride in one vehicle to reach the same destination. Carpools are arranged directly between commuters, giving you the flexibility to coordinate schedules and decide how to split expenses like gas and parking.

Carpools and vanpools are coordinated in the My Way to Go platform. Please reach out to Alexis Travers at alexis@commutingsolutions.org to learn more about setting up carpools and vanpools.

Transit

There are several transit options along the CO 119 corridor that can help commuters navigate construction and reduce travel stress:

BOLT: This RTD route provides frequent service between downtown Boulder and Longmont along CO 119, offering a reliable alternative to driving through construction zones. The BOLT helps commuters maintain consistent travel times and avoid potential delays caused by roadwork.

Transfort Flex: This flexible transit service connects Boulder, Longmont, Berthoud, Loveland, and Fort Collins. Riders can use it to travel along or near CO 119 while bypassing congested or closed areas. Its flexible routing and scheduling make it a convenient choice for adjusting to temporary detours or delays caused by ongoing construction.

Make your travel planning simple and stress-free by using the Next Ride RTD trip planner! Whether you’re commuting to work, exploring the city, or heading out for a weekend adventure, Next Ride can help you find the fastest routes, check schedules, and plan your journey with confidence.

Bike

With new CO 119 underpasses emerging and sections of the new bike path freshly paved, it’s tempting to take an early ride. But for your safety, the bikeway remains fully closed until construction is complete and it’s officially opened to the public. Here are some alternative bike routes to use.

Longmont-to-Boulder (LoBo) Regional Trail: You can also utilize the Longmont-to-Boulder (LoBo) Regional Trail, which is a 12-mile trail system that runs through Gunbarrel, Niwot, and open space properties connecting the City of Boulder with the City of Longmont.

Commuting Solutions Bike Northwest Interactive Map: Use this interactive map to find nearby bike routes that remain open and accessible during CO 119 construction. The map highlights regional trails, on-street bikeways, and key connections that can help you avoid construction zones and closed trail segments. It’s a valuable resource for planning a safe, convenient ride while staying informed about alternative routes throughout the corridor.

Bike-n-Ride shelters are designed to provide secure storage for bicycles, offering peace of mind to commuters who rely on their bikes for daily travel.
For many, the ability to use both a bike and public transit together makes their daily commute easier and more flexible. Whether cycling the first mile to catch a bus or cycling the last mile home after a long day at work, Bike-n-Ride shelters ensure cyclists can confidently make the connection between different modes of transportation.

There are 12 Bike-n-Ride shelters in the network. With shelters the along US 36 in the City & County of Broomfield and Westminster into Boulder County, and Longmont, there are many opportunities for utilization!

Annual Survey Results Show Positive Feedback

Commuting Solutions recently surveyed Bike-n-Ride Shelter card holders in Broomfield and Westminster to better understand how they use the shelters and what improvements they want. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the shelters’ convenience and security.

One commuter shared, “Having a Bike-n-Ride Shelter has completely changed the way I commute for school. I was already taking the bus but was driving to the RTD Park-n-Ride. Having somewhere safe and protected to leave my bike has motivated me to get a few miles riding nearly every day. Awesome program to have!” – Bike-n-Ride Shelter Card Holder

This testimonial is just one of many individuals who appreciate the added convenience and safety the shelters provide. Commuters expressed satisfaction across various aspects of the shelters. For example, 78% of respondents said they are very satisfied with the shelter’s cleanliness, 85% respondents said that they are very satisfied with the safety of the shelters, and 84% are very satisfied with the ease of using the shelters. Additionally, 72% of respondents stated that having access to the Bike-n-Ride shelters has increased the frequency of transit use for their commute and 81% of respondents stated that having access to Bike-n-Ride shelters has increased the number of times they use a bicycle to commute the first and final mile to and from the transit station.

Overall, the survey results show that Bike-n-Ride shelters are not only well-received for their cleanliness, safety, and ease of use, but they also encourage more sustainable commuting. By providing secure and convenient bike parking, these shelters help more people confidently combine cycling with transit, supporting a safer, more connected, and environmentally friendly transportation network.

Looking Ahead

As we continue to see the benefits of Bike-n-Ride shelters, we are excited to explore additional opportunities for expansion. The northwest metro region’s goal is to create a network for multimodal corridors where first and final mile services and programs, like Bike-n-Ride shelters, make it easier for commuters to travel without a vehicle.

If you haven’t yet used a Bike-n-Ride shelter, we encourage you to read more about gaining access to a shelter near you. Whether you’re an experienced cyclist or just getting started, these shelters provide the perfect way to combine your bike ride with public transit. Here’s to a healthier, more sustainable, and more convenient commute!

In a meaningful shift for transit access in the Denver-Boulder region, Via Mobility Services has announced that as of September 1, 2025, all rides within their service area are fare-free! Previously, fares were $6 for a one-way trip within a town and $12 for a trip between towns.

A Switch to Zero Fare

The switch to zero fare at Via Mobility Services is important because it removes a major barrier to access and supports the organization’s mission of mobility for all. Here’s why it matters:

Provides financial relief for riders: Via Mobility Services notes that 70% of their riders live on annual incomes under $30,000. Removing the fare alleviates the “pay or skip” dilemma that many face when choosing between transportation, food, or medical care.

Mobility as independence: Via Mobility Services offers door-through-door paratransit service, not just fixed bus routes and microtransit, but personalized rides for older adults, people with disabilities, or others needing extra support.

Encourages ridership and community connection: Removing fares can encourage more people to use Via Mobility Services programs, which strengthens community ties and increases awareness of accessible transit options. More ridership also highlights the importance of maintaining and expanding paratransit services regionwide.

Policy momentum & sustainability: The zero-fare transition is enabled in part by supportive funding streams like the Colorado Association of Transit Agencies’ Zero Fare Transit Grant Pilot program which ran throughout the summer of 2025, which aims to reduce pollution, vehicle use, and improve access during ozone season. This change will have an approximately $50k impact on Via Mobility Services operating budget, however, Via Mobility Services leadership team knew this was the right decision to make!

Via Mobility Services switch to zero fare is about equity, independence, and inclusion. It reflects the belief that everyone deserves access to mobility, because being able to get where you need to go is essential to health, opportunity, and quality of life.

Exciting progress is underway on the Diagonal Bikeway. With new underpasses emerging and sections of the path freshly paved, it’s tempting to take an early ride. But for your safety, the bikeway remains fully closed until construction is complete and it’s officially opened to the public.

A Sneak Peek From Above

We’re excited to share new drone footage, courtesy of RS&H, showing the Jay Road/CO 119 intersection, featuring the newly constructed underpass and a glimpse of the paved bikeway. It’s a preview of the safe, scenic route to come.

Why It’s Still Closed

While some areas look ready, others are still active construction zones. According to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), unfinished segments may include uneven surfaces or incomplete grading, construction equipment and material piles, and other unpredictable hazards.

Please do not enter the bikeway until it’s officially open. Staying off the path helps protect both you and the crews working hard to finish it. Remaining bikeway work includes:

Paving operations

Connecting the underpasses to the bikeway

Building two pedestrian bridges

Installing safety railing

Installing signage

Grading and seeding around the bikeway

What’s Coming

The completed bikeway will include:

Four new underpasses at CO 119, Niwot Road, CO 52, and Jay Road

One new overpass at 63rd Street

These enhancements will improve safety and connectivity for cyclists and pedestrians throughout the corridor. New wayfinding signs will also help guide riders to their destinations along the corridor.

Here are a few options for leaving your car at home this holiday season:

The mountains may be calling, but you have to be pretty hardcore to brave I-70 on the weekends these days! Try out some transit services this winter to make your trip to the high country a bit more relaxing:

Colorado Department of Transportation’s (CDOT) Bustang service is dedicated to helping make the drive to the mountains safer and more enjoyable, connecting mountain communities with the Bustang, Pegasus, Snowstang and Outrider services. Bustang services help you save on gas, travel via an eco-friendly transit option, remove the stress of driving, allow you to surf the web or work with WiFi, USB ports, and power outlets.

Let’s check out the winter mountain service options!

Bustang

Bustang’s West Line service connects Denver to Grand Junction, with many stops along the way including Glenwood Springs, Vail, Frisco, Idaho Springs, and more! With luggage storage, onboard WiFi, comfortable seats, and bathrooms onboard, you can travel I-70 with ease.

Pegasus

Pegasus is Bustang’s express shuttle service from Denver Union Station, with stops at Federal Center Station in Lakewood, Idaho Springs, Frisco, Vail, and Avon. Local mountain transit systems provide additional options for riders to extend their trips even further.

Snowstang

The Snowstang service provides transportation directly to ski resorts! Snowstang has room for all your gear and allows you to travel up I-70 without the headache of driving yourself.

Outrider

The Outrider Craig–Denver service gives riders a lift up and down U.S. 40 with stops in Craig, Steamboat Springs, Granby, Crested Butte, Fraser, Winter Park, and more.
Learn more about Bustang, Pegasus, Snowstang and Outrider routes and schedules at RideBustang.com.

Winter Park Express (service starts December 19)

All aboard the Amtrak Winter Park Express — your ticket between Denver and the foot of the slopes at the Winter Park Resort, voted North America’s best ski resort and Colorado’s top adventure town. An additional stop is now included at neighboring Fraser, Colorado.

The ski train runs Friday – Sunday from December 19 – January 4. Expanded service runs Thursday – Sunday from January 8 – March 29. One-way fares start at $9, with kids fares (age 2-12) starting at just $4.50.

Pack your skis or snowboards as a carry-on for no additional charge. During boarding, skis and snowboards will be placed in a dedicated baggage storage area.

Carpool to the Mountains

Shredding the slopes? Share the ride! Several ski resorts offer carpooling benefits like discounts and prize giveaways. Instead of backtracking to get on Interstate 70, meet your carpool at the Dinosaur Park-n-Ride lots in Golden (I-70, exit259). There are three lots to choose from: Wooly Mammoth (918 spots), T-Rex (156 spots) and Stegosaurus (117 spots).

Cost: Free

Looking for a ride? Try the TreadShare app to connect with other skiers and snowboarders headed to the mountains the same day you are!

Transit Escapes to the City

Denver

The City of Westminster offers a hybrid work schedule. Bridger works from home on Mondays and Fridays and commutes to the office Tuesday through Thursday. To help maximize time and wellbeing, Bridger utilizes a variety of modes to get to work.

Combining Running and Transit

Bridger runs from Gunbarrel to the RTD US 36 & Table Mesa Park-n-Ride in Boulder, then catches the Flatiron Flyer to the RTD US 36 & Sheridan Station in Westminster where he can walk to his office.
Electric Vehicle

Bridger owns an electric vehicle which he utilizes when there are time constraints in his schedule.

Resources that Support Bridger’s Commute

For Bridger, sustainable commuting means more than getting to and from work. It’s about integrating exercise, protecting the environment, and improving quality of life. Perks of commuting sustainability include:

Why Bridger Chooses Sustainable Commute Options

Build exercise naturally into his daily routine.

Enjoy scenic rural bike routes through Louisville and along the US 36 Bikeway.

Reduce his environmental footprint, especially important during ozone season.

Use time on the Flatiron Flyer to catch up on work: “I catch up on emails on transit. You can’t do that while driving.”

Save money on gas and vehicle maintenance.

Engage with community while riding transit.

Challenges and Solutions

Time constraints and other responsibilities can make sustainable commute options difficult sometimes. The solution? Flexibility.

He coordinates with family schedules, utilizes his electric vehicle, and uses hybrid options. Building commuting habits is also important. Planning ahead and allowing room for changing plans is important.

To help mitigate time spent commuting, Bridger is excited for the CO 119 Diagonal Highway project which will allow for more frequent and easier transit service between Gunbarrel and Boulder.

Bridger’s commute habits are a great reminder that sustainable commuting does not have to be all-or-nothing. It can be flexible, adaptable, and rewarding. Combining various modes of travel across his routine highlights the positive impact of thorough planning, supportive employer programs like EcoPass, and infrastructure investments that make sustainable transportation more accessible. Thank you, Bridger for sharing your commute story!

RTD has released a draft report outlining the financial reality of completing the long-promised FasTracks transit expansion. The findings show that finishing the remaining four rail corridors—Northwest Rail Peak Service, North Metro Completion, Southwest Extension, and Central Extension—would cost approximately $1.6 billion in construction alone. Yet, RTD has only identified $441 million in available funding, leaving a shortfall of nearly $1.2 billion. The gap may be even wider when accounting for inflation and the possibility that projected state funding allocations may be overly optimistic.

Despite the bleak financial outlook, RTD views this report as a necessary first step toward reigniting efforts to complete FasTracks. The agency is actively seeking public feedback on the draft and plans to work closely with the Governor’s office, the Colorado General Assembly, and other partners to explore sustainable transit solutions for the region. The finalized report is due to the state legislature on December 1.

Background: FasTracks and Its Journey

FasTracks has been a familiar term to residents along the Front Range since 2004, when voters approved a ballot initiative to expand transit across the Denver metro area. The ambitious plan calls for:

122 miles of new light and commuter rail

18 miles of bus rapid transit (BRT)

57 new transit stations

Improved bus/rail connections with timed transfers

New park-n-rides and enhanced transit facilities

To date, RTD has completed about 75% of the program. Notable achievements include the Flatiron Flyer BRT service along US 36 between Denver and Boulder, which has significantly improved transit access in the northwest corridor.

However, FasTracks has faced major setbacks, including reduced tax revenues following the 2008 recession and rising construction costs. Recent legislation has directed RTD to prioritize the Northwest Rail and North Metro corridors, prompting the current report and renewed focus on finishing what was started over two decades ago.

RTD invites customers, partners, and members of the community to ask questions and share their feedback related to the draft Finishing FasTracks Report. A form is available on the website and there will also be an open forum during the Thursday, October 28 RTD board meeting. Comment period closes November 14.

The entire draft report and summary is available on the RTD website.

Meet Eric Moore

Eric Moore, 55, is a life-partner and father of two, living in Broomfield, Colorado. He was raised in Aurora and lived in Denver most of his life before moving to Santa Fe, NM. After spending a decade in Santa Fe he returned to Denver in 2017, bringing with him degrees in theater and mathematics and 10 years of experience working for The Santa Fe Opera.

Today, Eric services as the Technical Director of the Denver Center Theatre Company, a department of The Denver Center for the Performing Arts, managing everything from backstage crew to scenery building.

Eric’s Commute

When Eric moved back to Denver from Santa Fe, he noticed that the parking access in Downtown Denver had worsened dramatically. Thankfully, The Denver Center for the Performing Arts offers discounted parking, a small transportation stipend, and an RTD EcoPass.

He combines multiple modes of transportation to navigate the city efficiently and affordably:

Flatiron Flyer bus from Broomfield to Union Station

Bike and unicycling first and final mile connections

Utilizes the Bike-n-Ride Shelters to store his bike when needed

Occasionally, he will park in the Highlands and ride a bike to Downtown Denver

Over the past year, Eric has even incorporated unicycling into his commute once a week, turning a fun hobby into a practical transportation tool. He recently stated that he wants to double his unicycle mileage!

“I want to keep my unicycling skills sharp. My newest goal is to double my unicycle mileage.”

Turning Commute Time into Me Time

Eric finds commuting by bus relaxing. He is an avid reader and finds commuting by bus a great time to read. Beyond mental relaxation, Eric says that incorporating cycling into his commute has helped him stay physically active and noticed that his legs felt stronger when he recently hiked his eighth 14er! Eric also mentioned the financial benefits like saving money on parking, gas, and vehicle wear-and-tear.

Eric recently stated, “the other day a road grater had fallen on its side closing I-25 down to one lane along my commute. The bus was on time (thanks to the managed HOV lanes on US 36!) I was absorbed in a book, and I didn’t even notice until I got to work and everybody else was grumpy and late.”

Overcoming Challenges

Commuting sustainably isn’t without its hurdles. In April 2025, Eric suffered a fall that impacted his knee, making unicycling challenging for a while. He was in the middle of a fundraiser on his unicycle but still reached his goal! He has persevered and is back to commuting on his unicycle.

Tips and Tools for a Smooth Commute

Eric credits several resources for making his commute manageable:

The Denver Center for the Performing Arts EcoPass: Reduces cost of transit, making it more affordable than driving

Flatiron Frequency: Buses come every 15 minutes which helps keep his schedule predictable

Bike-n-Ride Shelters for a safe and dry place to park his bike

Find a way to commute that you enjoy!

Eric continues to explore creative ways to make his commute both practical and enjoyable. Whether it’s adding more unicycle miles, experimenting with new bike routes, or discovering hidden reading time on the bus, he sees commuting as more than just getting from point A to point B. It’s a chance to stay active, save money, and enjoy the journey. Eric hopes his experiences inspire others to find commuting options that fit their lifestyle while bringing a little joy along the way. Thank you, Eric for sharing your commute story!

Commuting Solutions, a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing transportation advancements for the northwest metro region, is excited to announce its selection and engagement by the Redtail Ridge Metropolitan District as the Transportation Demand Management (TDM) Coordinator for the highly anticipated Redtail Ridge mixed-use mega campus development in Louisville, Colorado. This 2.5M RSF innovation-driven project, located between Boulder and Denver on the former StorageTek campus, will include a new hospital, as well as various purpose-built life sciences, research and development, bio-manufacturing, office, retail, and industrial facilities.

In this pivotal role, Commuting Solutions will ensure that the Redtail Ridge development meets its transportation mode share goals as outlined in the Redtail Ridge TDM Plan and aligns with the City of Louisville’s Transportation Master Plan (TMP). As the Transportation Management Organization (TMO) for the northwest metro region, Commuting Solutions collaborates with local municipalities, transportation service providers, and employers to expand sustainable travel options for residents and commuters.

“The Redtail Ridge project presents an extraordinary opportunity to enhance multimodal connectivity locally and within the region,” said Audrey DeBarros, Executive Director at Commuting Solutions. “We look forward to working alongside the Redtail Ridge Metro District, Sterling Bay, and the City of Louisville to optimize access to multimodal travel options in and around this new development. Our collective efforts will minimize single-occupancy vehicle traffic and promote more sustainable travel across the region.”

In response to the City of Louisville’s request, Sterling Bay produced an innovative TDM Plan in coordination with their Traffic and Mobility Study to reduce congestion and enhance accessibility. The incorporation of TDM into the formation of a metro district is a unique and innovative approach to mitigating traffic congestion in the local community. It helps ensure the built environment effectively facilitates the mobility of all travelers, regardless of mode choice.

As the TDM Coordinator, Commuting Solutions will implement a robust framework for TDM services, which will include the following initiatives:

Providing RTD Eco Passes for all employees

Offering micro transit/shuttle services to connect employees and visitors to high-capacity transit options

Establishing on-site bike commuter amenities such as secure parking, showers, and changing rooms

Conducting periodic surveys to analyze commuter behavior and preferences

Collaborating with employers to promote flexible work schedules and telecommuting options

Encouraging carpool and vanpool arrangements

Developing orientation packets to inform new employees about non-SOV options and incentives

Hosting community events like Bike to Work Day

Innovation, sustainability and economic vitality took center stage at the Sustainable Transportation Summit, hosted by Commuting Solutions on Tuesday, August 26 at the Longmont Museum and Cultural Center. The summit, now in its ninth year, convenes transportation partners annually to present innovations to address the growing travel needs of the northwest metro region. With Denver International Airport (DEN) as a focal point, the event showcased the airport’s ambitious plans to accommodate surging passenger volumes while advancing sustainability and regional multimodal connectivity.

Audrey DeBarros, Executive Director of Commuting Solutions shared, “We’re honored to host this event year after year, working alongside our valued partners to elevate the conversations shaping the northwest metro region. Strengthening multimodal connectivity to Denver International Airport is a shared priority, and together we’re driving innovative solutions that enhance access, equity, and quality of life for both residents and visitors.”

Keynote speaker Phil Washington, CEO of DEN, delivered a compelling address outlining the airport’s Vision 100 Plan, which aims to prepare DEN for 100 million annual passengers within the next several years and 120 million by 2045. Washington emphasized the importance of proactive infrastructure development, including enhancements to Peña Boulevard, expanded walkable options between the terminal and concourses, and continued investment into multimodal transportation.

“We are endeavoring to build and maintain the infrastructure we need now and in the near term— while at the same time planning and building the infrastructure we’ll need 30-50 years from now,” said Washington.

Expert Panel Spotlights Regional Multimodal Connectivity, Innovation and Sustainability

The second half of the summit featured a dynamic panel discussion with Scott Morrissey and Brodie Ayers of DEN, alongside Timothy Wolfe from the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT), offering deep insights into the airport’s long-term sustainability planning and economic vitality.

Morrissey, senior vice president of sustainability at DEN, shared that the airport is “uniquely prepared for growth in a way that isn’t the case in other parts of the country. With 34,000 acres to work with, and a coherent strategic plan, DEN can plan for and respond to growth in ways that might be more challenging in different industries”. Morrissey also shared that as the airport plans for growth, they are very thoughtful about the strategic and sustainability aspects of the growth. Incorporating a long-term mindset early on in projects will help DEN to get on a path to reach their 2040 net zero goal.

Ayers, regional and transportation planning supervisor at the airport, discussed DEN’s award-winning Transportation Demand Management (TDM) Plan, a comprehensive framework outlining 20 strategies to reduce solo driving trips to and from the airport. He stressed the importance of regional collaboration, citing successful transit models in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Boston, and praised the performance of RTD’s AB service, which averaged 2,000 weekday riders earlier this year.

“We’re working toward a cultural shift in how we approach transportation—one that benefits the entire region,” said Ayers.

Timothy Wolfe provided a critical economic development perspective highlighting DEN’s outsized role as the state’s largest employer and a revenue generator to the tune of $47.2 billion. He discussed OEDITs partnership with state agencies and development drivers, including DEN, to support growth and special efforts, including the 2027 Sundance Film Festival which will be hosted for the first time in Boulder, Colorado.

A Summit of Vision and Impact

The 9th Sustainable Transportation Summit served as a powerful reminder of DEN’s role as Colorado’s largest employer, a global transportation hub, and a leader in sustainable innovation. Commuting Solutions extends its gratitude to all speakers, attendees, and partners who help shape a more connected and resilient future.
