Twitter just release their own real-time search widget that I have embedded on the right side of this blog. For the sake of this post, I will embed it here as well to demonstrate. It is super simple to incorporate the code into a site of your own with whatever you’re looking for. I see a huge potential in this widget being able to help companies demonstrate what is going on in the tweetosphere with their products. Thanks Twitter!

I owned an iPhone 3G for a year and never jailbroke it. I owned an iPhone 3GS for less than two weeks and did jailbreak it. The one killer feature the Palm Pre has a hand up on the iPhone on is the ability to run background applications. The awesome feature about having a jailbroken iPhone is the ability to run background applications on an iPhone! The newest version of qTweeter just dropped in the Cydia store, and let me tell you it is absolutely incredible.

Once you’ve configured the application to connect to your Twitter and/or Facebook accounts, the application runs as a process in the background. When you want to send out a tweet, just slide your finger from the top of the screen downward. It smoothly renders a box for you to blast out that quick tweet that is so important you can’t take the time to hunt down your favorite “App Store Approved” client. qTweeter also integrates with the iPod, the camera, and Safari. Want to tell the world what you’re listening to? While in the iPod app, swipe your finger down, and it will create a tweet with the artist and name of the song. Find a killer web page you need to share with the world? While in Safari, do the fancy finger swipe, and it will allow you to tweet out the site and shorten the URL for you automatically.

It has been well-documented how the powers that be at AT&T neutered the SlingPlayer for iPhone application when it restricted its use to Wi-Fi networks only and stripped you of the ability to watch your SlingBox over the 3G mobile network. Finally a solution to the problem has been developed. It is called 3G Unrestrictor. This handy application allows you to set ANY application on your iPhone to work over the 3G network. The only problem is that this application is of course not available in the App Store and is available as a $2 download from the Cydia Store which means you will have to jailbreak your iPhone to unleash its full potential.

Impressive is the word I have to use to sum up iStat for iPhone (iTunes link). I recently downloaded this application from the App Store and had to ask myself, “Dummy, why haven’t you gotten this yet?” This site runs Wordpress MU using XAMPP on my Mac Pro. Rarely does the massive computing power on the 8-core Mac Pro ever get taxed, but it would be really nice to  get an insight on system resources while away from the server. Now I can do exactly that.

A ton of celebrities carry iPhone 3GS as their preferred communication device. Jimmy Fallon is one of those people. He tweets on a regular basis, and you can see that he is doing it from the convenience of his iPhone 3GS. In the video below, he is showcasing some applications available from the App Store. Of course he has to put his on comical spin on a few of them. Enjoy!

Even though the original iPhone was released over two years ago now, there are still quite a few people who are getting around to owning their first. This video was extremely comical when it first came out and still makes me chuckle. The original iPhones were not subsidized by AT&T and were substantially more expensive to buy up front. I think I have tried the vast majority of Twitter applications for the iPhone. Some remained my favorite for a while, yet others were immediately rejected. The first application I purchased for my iPhone 3G on launch day a year ago was Twitterific Premium. It reigned supreme for quite a while, but it seems like over the past couple of months there have been some really great programs showing up in the App Store. Hit the poll below and let me know which is your favorite. In a week, I will reveal mine and why.

The graphic to the right is quite disheartening. I ran the Speedtest.net application three times while on a 3G network in metro Atlanta before I could get an upload speed above 50kbps. The download speed is very acceptable for a mobile device, but having upload speeds nearly 96% slower than download speeds is just reprehensible.

Earlier today I tried to run a live stream on Qik while on the AT&T 3G network. By the time I was done, my 15 minute recording was showing on a 9 minute delay. I haven’t run a sniffer trace on how much bandwidth Qik takes, but it can’t be much. Upload speeds slightly better than a 56k modem are absolutely unacceptable for a $300 iPhone 3GS (with 2 year contract) and a mandatory $30/month data plan.
