George Best, a true Legend, has died.

It's a sad day for the football world, it's a sad day for me.

There are many things that have been, and will be, said about
the boy from Belfast who took the football world by the scruff
of its neck and launched it into the world of entertainment, whilst
rightfully earning the title of 'the world's first footballing superstar'.

I could write about the many exploits of the world's greatest ever
player, but if you don't already know the stories you can, or
probably already have, read them in the numerous news articles
printed online and in traditional print. So I'll skip that.

Back in November 1996 I spent an amazing 3 days with a Legend
I had always dreamt of meeting. It was whilst I was running Kuala
Lumpur's first sports bar and I had brought George over from the
UK to do some publicity work for us.

Despite all of his well publicised shortcomings, this great footballer
is one of the gentlest, kindest, warmest, charitable and totally genuine
human beings I have ever met in all of my 45 yrs (20+ of which have
been spent traveling and meeting hundreds of thousands of people
both in and out of the entertainment world).

George made a profound impact on my life and I retain extremely
fond and vivid memories and I regret not having met up with him
again since. Especially as there were a couple of times during my
travels where our paths almost crossed.

I sit here with tears in my eyes, yet with warm feelings and joy that
I experienced from not only spending quality time with him, but also
from the sheer excitement of watching a true magician with a football.

George you will be missed and as you quite rightly said :

“They won’t remember who I dated, the fights, the car crashes or whatever.
They won’t remember any of that because it’s not important. They will
remember the football”.

NO one who saw him play will ever forget George Best.

I won’t forget him for the person that he actually was.

English Premier League 2005 / 2006 Fixtures Released

The wait is over, the fixtures for the 2005/06 Premier League season have been released.

The English domestic football season starts in August and runs through to May of the following year. The curtain-raiser will be the FA Community Shield between Arsenal and Chelsea on Sunday 7th August 2005 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

The following weekend sees the start of the Premier League, where England's top 20 professional football teams will compete in this 380-game competition. Click here to see who your team are playing, where and when.

In addition to the Premier League, the season will also bring excitement for many fans through their teams' participation in the FA Cup, the Carling Cup, UEFA Cup and UEFA Champions League.

Liverpool Cancels Pre-Season Tour of Japan

Liverpool FC have cancelled their scheduled July pre-season tour of Japan.

The Reds were to play 2 games in Japan, against Shimuzu S-Pulse on the 27th July and Kashima Antlers on 30th July. Unfortunately, due to their defence of the Champions League Trophy, these dates clash with the first leg of the 2nd qualifying round of the CL which is to be played on 26 or 27 July against yet unknown opponents.

However, all is not lost as Liverpool are to compete in the FIFA Club World Championships - the Toyota Cup Japan 2005 - in Yokohama on the 15th & 18th December 2005, as the holders of the European Champions League Trophy.

Other teams involved in this FIFA competition will be the winners of AFC Champions League, CAF Champions League, CONCACAF Champions Cup, OFC Club Championship and CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores.

A viewing feast is in store for football fans across Asia during the summer of 2005.

6 English Premier League clubs will be visiting various Asian destinations in July.

Bolton, Everton & Manchester City will be competing for the FAPL Asia Trophy in Thailand from 20-23 July along with the Thai National side at Bangkok’s Rajamangala Stadium. Match Packages Available

Manchester United’s Asian Tour 2005 kicks off on the 23 July where they will compete against a Hong Kong XI, for the ING Manchester United Cup, at the Hong Kong Stadium as part of the HKFA’s 90th Anniversary celebrations. Yet again we have received many enquiries on match packages for the upcoming new season.

And, once again, many people are asking the big question, "If the current season
finishes May 15th and the new season doesn't start until August but the match I want to go to might not be until March next year, why do I have to book so early?"

Following, is an article I wrote over a year ago, it still stands and believe me, it will be worse this year.

The average stadium capacity of English Premier League clubs is around 40,000 (some more, some less) and the majority of tickets are sold to season ticket holders, usually around 75%.

"No problem, that leaves approx 10,000 tickets per game so I can buy nearer the match date" I hear you say.

"Not necessarily true", is my reply.

Let's not talk about the current top 3 clubs, let's use Manchester City as a prime example: The City of Manchester Stadium holds 48,000, the Season ticket allocation is 36,000, the away fans allocation is approx 2,000 (maybe more for some games). Add to that all the sponsors' allocations and you are already well over 40,000.

But wait, what about the official fan club members who cannot get a season ticket, or just simply cannot afford that amount of upfront cash? - but still want to go to every home game!

They get priority purchase options on the remaining tickets ... and believe me, there are a lot of them.

April 15th 1989 - A day we must never forget!

Thousands of Liverpool fans went to watch their heroes play Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup Semi-Final at Sheffield's Hillsborough Stadium - but 96 of them never came home.

96 innocent Reds died that day due to blatantly poor organization.

The Hillsborough Memorial stands alongside the Shankly Gates at Anfield, the home of Liverpool FC, and is always decorated with flowers and other tributes to the 96 fans who lost their lives in the disaster.

At the centre of the memorial burns the eternal flame, signifying that they will never be forgotten and They'll Never Walk Alone.

If you are a Liverpool fan, or in fact any football fan, who cannot visit the ground to pay your respects, please visit the Liverpool FC site and spare a few moments for them this 15th April.

Perhaps one day we will see justice for them. The thoughts of us all are with the families and friends of the 96 who died and everyone affected by the sad tragedy.

2006 World Cup Ticket applications exceed availability by 4.5 million

Fans from around the world have put FIFA under siege with 5.4m applications for the 812,000 tickets available during the first sales window, which closed last Thursday 31st March 2005. Approximately 1.5m applications were received during the last 7 days. 90% of the applications came from Europe, with 85% of these coming from Germany.

Tickets will be allocated by a lottery, which commences 15th April, and not on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.

Demand has been greater for the opening game on 9th June, likely to feature the hosts Germany (the only team guaranteed to have qualified) and for the Final on 9th July.

Fans that have chosen to follow a particular team throughout the tournament will have to wait until October to find out if their team qualifies and have a further wait until December to find out which group their team will be in, who are their opponents and in which cities the matches will be played. Fans whose team do not qualify or get knocked out at any stage before the final will be refunded for the unused tickets.

The next sales windows are from 1st May to 15th November and 1st December to 15th January 2006, where a further 300,000 tickets will be available. That’s a total of 1.1 million tickets guaranteed for public sale.

The remaining 1.86 million available tickets go to National Football Associations, sponsors, media and VIP’s.

2006 World Cup Ticket Orders SkyRocket

Ticket orders for the 2006 World Cup in Germany have already passed two million.

As of Thursday 24th Feb 2005, 320,000 separate applications had been received for a total of 2.2 million tickets. "Some matches are overbooked, the final in particular, but there are still tickets for the many group matches" said organising committee vice-president Horst R. Schmidt.

Only 812,000 tickets are up for grabs in the first sales window, which opened on February 1st and runs until March 31st 2005. Applications received will go into a draw on April 15th, with the order in which they are received making absolutely no difference.

Fans can apply for a maximum of 28 higher-priced tickets - up to four tickets per match for up to seven matches.

For the cheaper category tickets, the maximum is two tickets per match for up to three matches.

Bryan Robson returns home

Bryan Robson has returned to West Bromwich Albion after 23 years.

Captain Marvel has been awarded a 2 and-a-half year contract as manager
of the Midlands club.

Bryan left WBA in 1981 to join Manchester United and ultimately become

Spiritual aid for Savage Wrexham fund

A fund formed by Birmingham City's Wrexham-born Robbie Savage to keep
the English League One club in business has been given a boost from the
Reverand Geoffrey Holden.

The 79 year old retired religious minister has donated £500 to the fund after
reading about the clubs financial woes. The fund was started to raise £900,000
before 17th November, to prevent the club from facing closure.

Apparently the money is needed to pay an Inland Revenue bill.

A Hong Kong based entrepreneur has developed a watch to help football fans track the progress of their favourite English teams

EPL Broadcasts in Hong Kong

Having spoken to many English Premier League fans in Hong Kong, there seems to be some confusion over how they are going to get to see the new season 2004/2005 games 'Live' on TV.

For the past few years, i-Cable have been showing the EPL games via ESPN/Star Sports as part of their broadcasts. However, as of 17th August 2004, ESPN/Star Sports will be shifting to Now Broadband TV - and this is where the confusion lies.

i-Cable (who have won the bidding for the broadcast of EPL games for Hong Kong) will still be showing these games, but the feed will be directly from the UK.

Even though ESPN/Star will still be broadcasting the EPL games out of Singapore, their footprint does not include Hong Kong and the footie that ESPN/Star will be showing in Hong Kong is the European Champions League, the FA Cup, the League Cup and selected England games (if i am informed correctly).

Therefor, EPL footie fans in Hong Kong, don't go and sign up for NOW BBTV and cancel your i-Cable subscription, otherwise you will be in for a big shock!

If you want to see the 'live' EPL games you will need i-Cable and if you want to watch ECL, FA Cup, League Cup and England games, you will need NOW BBTV.

So, if you are like me, you need to subscribe to both! yes, it will be a little bit more expensive but at least you'll get to see all of those fantastic games at your leisure.

Overseas Supporters

If you are a regular visitor/subscriber to the 3 Lions Sport website and/or blog you will already know that we advocate overseas fans to travel to the UK to watch their favourite team in action at least once in their life.

The following article is an excerpt from a post on a Manchester United fans forum, that we would like to share with you. It is warming to know that passionate UK fans also welcome and encourage fans from overseas.

Excerpt:
I'm a home and away fan since 1960, and I'm proud of it, but I don't have any axe to grind against long-distance Reds. In fact, one of the great things about being a Red is that you know that you're following the team which has the biggest support base in the World.

I spend a lot of time abroad and it's fantastic to go to places as far afield as Thailand, Canada and New Zealand knowing that you will always find plenty of United fans to talk to. So, I don't have any negative views towards them out-of-towners.

I've got every respect for any Red from anywhere round the World who clearly loves the team and makes a real effort to see them whenever possible. I guess that the real problem for a lot of the regulars at Old Trafford is that sometimes it feels like our club has been hijacked by people who like to say that they are United supporters but don't really share our passion.

Anybody who can say yes to these few basic questions is OK with me!:

If United were a struggling outfit like they were pre-Sir Alex, would you still be supporting them?

If you live abroad and don't normally get the chance to see United, would you make a real effort to go see them if they were on tour and playing in your country?

Wherever you live, is it your real dream to watch the Reds 'live'?

If you live (or are visiting) the other side of the World, are you prepared to get up in the early hours of the morning to watch the Reds on TV?

I respect the opinions of any Red who is prepared 'to go the extra mile' to follow his/her passion. For example, the hundred or so Reds who, along with me, walked miles in the early hours of the morning to an obscure bar in a suburb of Melbourne and paid $25 to watch United on TV playing City in the Cup last season.

I suspect that a lot of so-called United supporters would struggle to truthfully say "yes" even one of the four questions (above).

As for me and quite a few others, we'll go on spending thousands of pounds a year following our passion, come rain or shine.

The New Season Beckons

Wow, what a fantastic season! The dominance of the English Premier League shifted from the north, to London, in what was an exhilarating campaign.

In years past, the benchmark to become Champions was 'lose no more than 5 games and you've got a chance to lift the Premiership Trophy'. Arsenal, stupendously, obliterated that belief by traversing the Premier League season of 38 games without being beaten!

Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool & Newcastle finished 2,3,4 & 5 respectively. Aston Villa (3rd from bottom in November) fought back to compete for a 5th place finish but missed out on goal difference on the last day. Fulham, Bolton and Birmingham each had an amazing season, all finishing in respectable positions.
