As always, the next level of smartphone is eagerly anticipated in 2012 and Sony is entering the fray with its own offering – the Sony Xperia S. Recently shown off at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Sony believes it’s on to a winner with a smartphone looking to combine excellent technological specifications with a sleek and sophisticated design.

As with any new phone on the market, impressive specs such as 1280×720 resolution display, 12MP camera and 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor will only get you so far. The real test comes when the public get their hands on the Sony Xperia S for real and all those little quirks and bugs come to light. However, initial reports are good and with Sony set to release an operating system update shortly, hopefully things will run as smooth as clockwork.

It remains to be seen how the Sony Xperia S fares against its direct competition such as the Apple iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3 but Sony’s first smartphone release since its split from Ericsson looks very promising. Officially released in the UK in March, the Sony Xperia S will not be available on all networks, but 3 Mobile network support has already been confirmed.
