On the 3rd of March 2003, Three was born. Yes, this week sees us celebrate our 10th birthday! And like all 10 year olds, we’ll be stuffing our faces with jelly and ice cream before playing musical chairs with our friends. Ok, so we might not be doing that, but we sure are going to celebrate, and it will probably involve jelly and ice cream. Or at the very least, cake.

I think we’ve got a lot to celebrate too. We’re currently the UK’s fastest growing network, with a whopping 8.8 million customers at the last count. And I’m sure fact fans will be interested to note that 8000 of them have been with us since the very start. We’re currently rolling out our Ultrafast network and launching more and more enabled smartphones to go with it, making your mobile internet experience even better. And this weekend saw the nationwide TV debut of Socks the plucky little wonder pony, our latest star.

Some of you may remember the heady days of bizarre jellyfish adverts and brick-like phones. If you fancy a trip down memory lane, check out our amazing video. Our Ultrafast Commitment.

You may have already heard our network news, as it was reported widely  in the media last week. But In case you missed it, or want to hear it from the horse’s mouth, we’re making a commitment to offer Ultrafast services (and by this we mean DC-HSDPA and LTE) as a standard feature on all price plans.

Unlike some of the other operators, we’re offering access to our Ultrafast network on all existing and new price plans. That means there’ll be no premium fee to ‘upgrade’ as we roll out the LTE technology to our Ultrafast network. Yes you read that right. We’re the network built for the internet and we really want the best of our network to be available without a premium price tag. We firmly believe that it shouldn’t just be for a select few.

I told you late last year about the roll out of our Ultrafast network, which is going so well that we’re actually slightly ahead of schedule. 55% of the UK population is now covered, and 80% of the population will be covered by the end of March. The second half of this year will see LTE technology being rolled out using the 1800MHz spectrum we’ve already acquired outside of the current spectrum auction. Exciting times. If you’ve got an Ultrafast ready device, and you are in a location where we have deployed the Ultrafast network, you’ll already be enjoying great speeds without having to pay a premium or needing to swap sim cards or price plans. Add LTE in to the mix and our Ultrafast network is really going to be something to be reckoned with.

Three announces a new, high speed Mobile Wi-Fi device – the E5531 Value MiFi – which will be the cheapest mobile Wi-Fi device in the UK to feature next generation HSPA+ mobile broadband technology.

The new Huawei E5531 MiFi will allow customers to experience significant speed gains compared to the existing award-winning MiFi. Initially around 40% faster, those figures will increase even further as Three ramps up its upgrade programme and rolls out the HSPA+ 21.1Mbps standard across its high-speed 3G network.*

The features and functionality Three’s customers have come to know and love from the Three MiFi are still there. Fast, secure Wi-Fi for iPads, laptops or handheld games consoles at the touch of a button. An OLED screen displaying key information like the amount of data used, speed of the current connection and length of browsing time, and a new look dashboard for viewing SMS and changing settings. In addition a new feature allows users to see their Wi-Fi user name and password on screen at the touch of a button for fast pairing with new gadgets.

Three mobile phone network is set to spark a price war among providers after pledging to offer customers ultrafast 4G services as a free upgrade.
The company promised to make the recently unveiled 4G – said to run five times faster than the current 3G network – a standard feature on all smartprice plans when it is added to the network later this year.
The move is a bold attempt to undercut competitors as EE – the only company which is currently able to offer 4G – is currently charging customers at least £5 a month extra for the service.

Mobile wars: Three’s decision not to charge extra for 4G is likely to spark more competition among providers Britain’s first 4G network was launched by EE in London and nine other cities in October last year.

But currently users must pay extra for the service and also fork out hundreds of pounds for a smartphone that can use the system, such as Apple’s iPhone 5 or Nokia’s Lumia 920.
Three will offer the service as standard with current price plans for an iPhone 5 on a monthly contract ranging from £34 to £44 a month plus up to £99 for the handset.
A Samsung Galaxy SIII costs £29 to £31 a month plus up to £29 for the handset on the same type of contract.

Dave Dyson, from Three UK, said: ‘As we add the next wave of technology to our Ultrafast network, we’ve listened to our customers and thought long and hard about the right way to do it. We don’t want to limit Ultrafast services to a select few based on a premium price and we’ve decided our customers will get this service as standard.’

The 4G system allows smartphones, tablets and laptops to surf the web five times faster than the current 3G network.

EE customers who have upgraded to 4G packages pay anything from £36 to £56 a month based on the amount of data downloads they sign up for.

Many other countries already offer the faster network and most providers charge around 20 per cent more for it.
Three’s network covers 55 per cent of the UK population with an initial focus on 50 towns and cities, reaching 80 per cent population coverage by the end of March.

Three customers able to benefit from the upgrade include those with the Apple iPhone 5, Nokia Lumia 920, Sony Xperia Z, Apple iPad mini and Apple iPad with Retina display.

Device choice is growing rapidly with new ultrafast-ready LTE versions of the Samsung Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II being launched on Three within the next month, and the BlackBerry Z10 launching mid-February.
