JOPLIN, Mo. —
Kelly Roper, 22, works for ATT and loves country music, going to concerts and hitting the town.

Jon Buck, 30, owns a Joplin nightclub and loves basketball — he can spin a ball on a finger a la the Harlem Globetrotters.

Ashleigh McBee, 26, works at Tropical Tan and says she is like a box of sweet and sour candy — she starts out sour, but ends up sweet.

Snacks Harris, 26, is an on-air personality for a top 40 radio station, and is definitely blessed with the gift of gab.

These four and others are ready to go on a date with winning bidders in an upcoming date auction.

“They had questions about it at first,” said Brent Patterson, organizer of the benefit date auction. “But they saw it was for a good cause, and that it’ll be a good time.”

The date auction will be held at 8:30 p.m. today at JB’s Piano Bar. Money raised from the event will benefit Jane Vanslyke, who is benefitting breast cancer.

Patterson said dates with the 10 people will be fun affairs — each date includes a free dinner and a movie ticket at the Northstar Cinema. Dates will go in groups, so each date will be like a double date.

Each prosepective date will be introduced during a presentation, complete with a personal theme song. Then each one will be grilled by Harris.

“It’s going to be a great time,” Patterson said. “It’ll be humorous, and it’ll be going for a good cause.”

Patterson got to know the Vanslyke family from his days playing football at East Newton High School. Coach Mark Vanslyke was one of the more influential teachers Patterson had, he said. He also became friends with the coach’s son.

“Everyone has that one coach or teacher that means a lot, and that’s who he was,” Patterson said. “He and his wife welcomed me into their home, and he helped me with a lot of personal stuff.”

When Patterson was 6, his then-13-year-old sister was diagnosed with leukemia. So when Jane Vanslyke was diagonsed in 2010 with breast cancer, Patterson knew firsthand the spiritual and financial impact the disease would have.

Together with teammate Jacob Khan and others, he started a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, which has raised about $6,000 in two years. But he wanted to do more, he said.

After brainstorming with Buck, he remembered when he had been auctioned off for a date back when he played football at Evangel.

“I had a lot of fun doing that, so I thought we could do it here,” Patterson said. “(Buck) found some of the dates and I found the rest. These are a bunch of great people. It’s hard to get up in front of so many for something like this.”

In addition to Roper, Buck, McBee and Harris, the list of dates includes:

~ Elin Skei, 21, a mass communications major and volleyball player at MSSU.

~ Jacob Khan, 21 a co-organizer of the auction and server at Logan’s Roadhouse.

~ Kyle Grubaugh, who was unable to attend a photo shoot at the Globe, so we really don’t know much about him. Sure he’s a good guy, though.

~ Nicole Modl and Kyle Webster, 20 and 22, MSSU students who happen to be dating each other, so couples can bid on a great double date.

~ Melynne Cline, 26, a bartender at JB’s with a penchant for decorating cupcakes.

	Want to go?

The Jane Vanslyke Benefit Date Auction will begin at 8:30 p.m. today at JB’s Piano Bar. Proceeds will benefit the Vanslyke family’s medical expenses as Jane fights breast cancer.

SAGINAW — For Saginaw High School sophomore Treohntae Hatter and his fellow FIRST Robotics teammates, building a robot went far beyond creating and putting it together.

It started simply with learning some of the tools and materials they were working with.

Saginaw High, with 12 members on its team, is in its inaugural season in the FIRST Robotics competition. They share space with Team Phoenix 703, which has helped mentor them, at the Saginaw Career Complex, 2102 Weiss in Saginaw.

“On the first day, we were organizing, learning what stuff was, learning the names of tools,” Hatter, 16, said. “I knew nothing about some of the things. Everyone has come a long ways.”

Team 703 Phoenix, comprised of students from several local high school including from St. Charles, Heritage, Hemlock, Arthur Hill, Swan
Valley and Freeland, is mentoring Saginaw High in its rookie season.

“It really gives the kids a chance to spread their wings,” said Team Phoenix 703 team leader Diane Kloc. “It’s cool to watch the kids learn from each other.”

Saginaw High and Team 703 Phoenix both are set to participate in two of the six FIRST Robotics events throughout Michigan in the next two months. Both teams are set to participate March 2 and March 3 at Kettering University in Flint.

Each robotics team designs a robot to participate in a game of 3-on-3 basketball. The teams must conform their robot inside certain weight, height, size and monetary restrictions.

This year, teams will play on a proverbial “court” during competition. There are three hoops at each end for the robots to “shoot” at and the robots also must go over obstacles to get to the hoops. For the finale of each game, teams must try to get their robot to balance on a bridge obstacle, along and then with their teammate robots.

Each high school team around the state has had a little less than two months to create, build and function their robot.

Saginaw High Spanish and technology teacher Robert Espinoza has coached and led the team from the beginning. He has seen the transformation in some of his team members.

“It went from nil to remarkable,” Espinoza said. “We had a team member, who said, ‘I drilled a hole.’ She used a table saw the other day. It’s extremely new (to them). We have people who haven’t been exposed to it.”

Many of the FIRST Robotics teams use their own equipment and materials, but Saginaw High’s team basically has put together the kit that is handed to all of the teams when the competition challenge begins in January.

The JCPenney’s in Bay City sponsored the Saginaw High team, helping purchase their kit.

“We started by building a bench and then we did surgery on it,” Espinoza said. “We just committed to this in December. They have had to learn (how to do) everything. We were given no instructions to follow.”

The time commitment is all outside of the high school walls, as most of the time, team members and coaches are meeting for two hours after school and for a good portion of the day on Saturday.

He also had his original hip.

Kozicki, 60, expects to break in his new hip when he helps bring back the Macker to downtown Saginaw in 2013, he announced Tuesday.

“We have a group of people committed to bring it back, including (Gus Macker founder) Scott McNeal, so it is definitely going to happen,” Kozicki said. “There are lot of things to do before then, a lot of logistics, sponsors, dates and things to line up to make it happen, but it’s going to happen.”

Kozicki is part of PAC-V, or People Against Crime and Violence, and hopes to use the Macker as a cornerstone of a larger event called Saginaw’s Got Soul, a multi-day festival of basketball, volleyball, blues concerts, soul food and art shows in downtown Saginaw.

“We’re putting up a big tent so a lot of people can get involved … we would love to have as many non-profits, churches, schools, organizations and charities involved as possible,” Kozicki said. “This could be a conduit for organizations to become stakeholders in this and share in the proceeds.”

McNeal was happy to hear about interest in Saginaw, which held the Macker from 1990 to 2000.

Hoffman, a member of PRIDE, was instrumental in bringing the Macker to Saginaw in 1990. Hoffman, who owned Schaefer Hat Store in Saginaw, died in 1998.

“Ziggy’s a fellow CMU grad, so that’s great,” McNeal said. “He started talking about it and the more he talked about it, the more it started to get a Wilbur feel to it,” McNeal said. “I really liked it.”

Kozicki lives in Midland, but works at Mid-Michigan Neuropsychology at Towne Center in Saginaw. He also teaches classes at Central Michigan University and Ferris State University.

McNeal will come to Saginaw on Friday, March 9 to talk to people interested in helping bring the Macker to Saginaw. He will meet people at the Underground Railroad office, beginning at 9 a.m.

“We want this to be a way to energize the community and bring something exciting to Saginaw,” Kozicki said. “We would like to provide something for our youth, give our local charities a way to raise money and re-introduce people to Saginaw friendliness.

“There’s a lot of potential. It can do a lot of great things, but we have a lot of work to do in the next year. We don’t want this to be just a one-year event. We want it to be sustainable, something people can expect to be part of every year.”

Kozicki and McNeal have no dates picked out for the 2013 season. Kozicki wants to make sure the Saginaw Has Soul event does not conflict with any other events already planned in Saginaw. McNeal also has to make sure the Saginaw event doesn’t conflict with other Macker tournaments.

Anyone interested in getting involved can contact Kozicki at zigpsych@sbcglobal.net.

“I played when it was here and our team won a Toilet Bowl trophy,” Kozicki said. “We did OK, won some games and had a lot of fun.

“I have every intention of going back out there in 2013 and playing again, even if I don’t have my old hip.”

AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -

An Auburn 12-year old is making a difference, by combining her love of basketball and fundraising to bring clean drinking water to families in Haiti.

Sutton Smith created hoops for Haiti, a three
on three tournaments for kids in 2008.

This year, she hopes to raise $1,000 to help
Auburn United Methodist Church build a water well in Haiti.

“It would make the lives of
people in Haiti so much easier. They can get fresh drinking water. They don’t
have to travel to get water is a necessity to life and we don’t realize we take
it for granted,” says Sutton.

The 3 on 3 tournaments is set for March 3rd from 10 am until
noon at the Grove Hill neighborhood. Kids
can play for a $5 donation.

Sutton says halftime is the most entertaining as the dads
compete in a dunking contest, judged by the moms.

For more information on how to donate or how to play in
hoops for Haiti, call the missions director at Auburn United Methodist Church.

Lawrence, Kansas (PRWEB) February 22, 2012

On Saturday February 25th the University of Kansas Sport Management and Marketing Club along with the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence will be putting on a 3 on 3 basketball tournament for first and second graders to participate in. This event has been made possible with the help from area sponsors such as the Briggs Nissan Lawrence store. Briggs Nissan Lawrence is one of the leading Nissan dealers in Lawrence and is very proud to be a part of this great event.

The tournament will be taking place at the Robinson Recreation Center on the University of Kansas campus. This event is very special because currently, there are no basketball tournament opportunities offered to first and second graders in the area. The goal of the tournament is to help teach these children the importance of good sportsmanship, getting active and learning the values of the game of basketball. The Boys Girls Club or Lawrence and the KU Sports Management and Marketing Club hopes that this tournament will help inspire and enable the children to realize their full potential.

Briggs Nissan Lawrence is a huge fan of basketball and getting kids active. They are a large supporter of the Lawrence community and they are proud to help out with this tournament. Briggs Nissan Lawrence is joined by Briggs Subaru and Briggs Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in contributing to this event.

Briggs Nissan Lawrence carries a large selection of vehicles such as Nissan in Lawrence, KS. The dealership also has many used cars in Lawrence, KS and would be happy to show interested consumers a great vehicle. For more information on the dealership please visit http://www.briggsnissanlawrence.com.
