Happy St Paddy's Day!

The celebrations for St Patrick's day has begun. I was at Malone's in Pavilion on Monday night for the media launch of St Patrick's 2012. It was definitely an evening of good carnival fun associated with St Patrick's Day. Good food, good company and of course lots of Guinness. Laugh your hats off with the entertaining hosts, thrilling games and fun loving St Patrick’s buskers.

Some food pics for the night. There was a lot but I was pretty much in a happy mood to take what's on my plate Round 1. LOL.

Kim Gary

The Kim Gary franchise has been around for quite some years. And these days they seemed to have pretty much mushroomed everywhere although a few closed e.g. Avenue K. I have not stepped into one since my Japanese lessons days some 9 or 10 years back. But one blue day, I missed my late classmate Grace whom I used to eat with before classes that I decided that I wanted to eat at the Sungai Wang branch.

The place was still as packed as those days. Its still as loud as those days. The waiters and waitress were still young and still on some sugar rush mode:P I wondered if everything stays the same or pretty much the same?

For starters, the Hong Kong milk tea was still good. Tasty tea with creamy milk. And this fits me well since I don't have a sweet tooth and I merely add the sugar according to my preference. Brilliant!

The Borsch soup was also still good. Still filled with chunky but soft vegetables in a tangy tomato broth. Comfort food!

This comes with some set meals

The Hong Kong Cheese Baked Rice with Pork tasted the same. Nothing to shout about but it was decently good compared to many of the new eateries that are offering this dish. It was cheesy and had enough gravy:D

One other gripe...the menu has expanded and its quite confusing. Pop in one day and you'll be faced with the regular menus, promotion menus, members only menu and when it comes to ordering...have fun figuring out which form you should use. LOL. Caution...the website www.kimgary.com.my is much simpler than their physical menu:P

My nostalgic visit was a culture shock for husbter who is pretty much stepping into Kim Gary for teh second time of his entire life. The one in Avenue K being his first and 3 years later in Sungai Wang. The poor man could not figure out the menu nor did the menu help him decide what to eat and drink. So the usual works..."Inky pinky ponky, father bought a donkey. Donkey died. Father cried. Inky pinky ponky"

...and the hubster ends up with some Mango thingy with some aloe vera like cubes inside. Certainly mango like and very sweet:P

For food, he ended up with Roasted Honey Spare Ribs with Shanghai Style Vegetable Rice. The corn was certainly yummy! I wouldn't complain much of the ribs. It was tasty but a tad dry. fast food style...I suppose.

This place is a place of weird hits and misses but certainly it has lasted quite well in Malaysia which speaks well of its formula. But if at all a must have when one visits Kim Gary by choice or curiosity or no choice, then its has to be the milk tea, the borsch soup and of course the luncheon meat sandwich (and I actually returned for this combination 2 days back in Taman Maluri when client was late for our appointment)

The luncheon meat is tasty rather than than the cheap flour like ones that many places serve.

I'm Running in the Standard Chartered KL Marathon

The title says it all. I am running in the Standard Chartered KL Marathon on 24th June 2012. Not exactly doing the half marathon though I am quite keen.

Some will find it strange that I am opting for the 10 km cruise category wearing my latest wig - a green one which I received from the St Patrick's media launch yesterday. I normally run with a cap but this time I will run with a wig and see how long I can last. Wigs are darn hot and stuffy and I can't imagine how I am going to run 10km in it.

However, I am determined to do run my 10km from the beginning to the end with my wig. And I ask in return that you donate RM5 for every km that I running. The monies goes to 2 charities that is close to my heart:

• Rescue DBKL Dogs by Puspa Rani

Chuck Hughes ~ Popcorn Shrimp with Spicy Honey

Yesterday I wrote on my afternoon with AFC's Chuck Hughes. Here's the promised recipe. It so simple and so yummy...its a must try!

Ingredients:
(A) Spicy Honey:
• 1 cup honey
• 1 clove garlic, mashed
• 1 tablespoon peppercorn
• 1 tablespoon chili flakes
• 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
• Sea salt

(B) Popcorn Shrimp:
• Oil for deep-frying
• 2 cups of cornstarch (Recommended: Maizena)
• 1/2 cup flour
• Salt and freshly ground pepper
• 4 eggs, beaten
• 2 pounds of rock shrimp

(C) Garnish:
• Lemon wedges

Instructions:
• For the spicy honey: In a saucepan, on medium heat, bring the honey, garlic, peppercorn, chili flakes, smoked paprika, and salt to a boil and let simmer for 2 minutes. Let cool, strain and transfer to a squeezable bottle. Keep aside.
• For the popcorn shrimp: Preheat the deep-fat fryer to 360 degrees F.
• In a bowl, mix together the cornstarch, flour, salt and pepper. Place the eggs in a bowl add the shrimp and coat. Remove the shrimp, letting the excess egg drip back into the bowl, then add the shrimp to the cornstarch mixture. Gently add to the fryer, turning until golden. Drain on paper towels and season with salt and pepper.
• Serve immediately after frying and drizzle with the spicy honey and garnish with lemon wedges.

A Day Off with Chuck Hughes

Chefs with tattoos look cute. Yes..I admit that Chuck Hughes of Asian Food Channel's Chuck's Day Off is certainly cute with or without the tattoos. And those tattoos just make him even better. Chuck is passionate about food. So passionate that he has food tattooed on his arms and his body. He's almost a walking tattooed menu. And since the man actually ate durians during his trip, and loved it, we should be seeing a durian tattoo on him real soon!

Over the week I was invited to an exclusive demo to catch Chuck Hughes in action. Its amazing that chefs make cooking look so easy and its one of the reasons that I have actually picked up cooking. The cooking demo (and of course tasting) was held at The Ritz Carlton. 3 dishes were featured and I'll be sharing the recipes over time...which starts tomorrow with The Popcorn Shrimp with Spicy Honey.

Throughout the session, Chuck thrills us with his tattoo stories. Chuck also shares some cooking tips that I think makes lots of sense (and cents):

• We should add salt to make food taste better. I think this is true even in making certain sweet desserts.

• One can always improvise while cooking. This is clearly seen during the demonstration of the dessert that we had.

• When coating something in batter, we should always add flour first followed by the egg. This enables the egg to stick better to our choice meat etc.

• The perfect temperature to fry chips is 275 degrees.

Food time...

The Popcorn Shrimp with Spicy Honey is a rather simple dish. In fact this is one of the first dishes he created for when he was working for other restaurants. This is a delightful dish that I reckon makes a god appetizer. Crunchy outside and soft inside its good to be eaten on its own. The tangy sauce is what makes the difference as we then get a slightly salty, spicy, sweet and tangy taste coating every bite of the crispy "popcorns".

My fave is the Pan Seared Beef Carpaccio with Potato Chips, Fried Capers and Lemon Aioli. In fact it looks rather simple, we should be making this at home real soon. Every bite was juicy meat with a lovely finish from the lightly spiced outside. The potato crisp does remind me a little of our CNY ngaku or arrowhead chips.

One can always improvise while cooking. And this is evident when we were served our Chocolate Tapioca Arancini. Originally this dish calls for tapioca. However, I think something probably happened and Chuck brought us on an adventure with rice.

Thus we had Chocolate Rice Arancini. The inspiration for this dish came about from leftover risotto rice (I love the idea of minimal wastage). A chocolate ganache is and cocooned in a rice ball coated with Panko bread crumbs. This ball is then deep fried. Absolutely decadent when eaten warm and its giving me a new insight to rice other than our regular way of eating rice and my Alaskan experience of cold rice with milk, raisins and cinnamon.

KISS a trio girl band rose to fame with this song in 2001. The band has since disbanded. This is also the first Korean song that got me hooked on Korean songs, movies and TV series. Well...its back to work with more Korean songs.

Roti Ice Cream

I revisited a childhood favourite in Penang Botanical Gardens during the Berjaya 3,2,1-Stop media trip to Penang. Roti Ice Cream. Yes the good old ice cream that you eat as a sandwich or in a cone. Nothing beats a cold creamy ice cream on a hot day or even during a walk in the park.

This stall has been here for as long as I could remember. And this time around, we arrived at the park at almost 12 noon. Hot and a lil hungry, the ice cream was such a welcoming sight. I would have loved to have my ice cream sandwich but realised I was half hour from lunch. No way would I want to ruin my appetite for Penang yummies. So I opted for a cone like buddy Abel.

The next time you visit Penang and if you visit the Botanical Gardens, then this ice cream sandwich is a must try. Nothing like Haagen Dazs or Baskin Robbins or Gelare but its just a simple ice cream...happy food from our childhood.

As much as I stuffed myself with all sorts of food (and some days junk food), I try to keep a balance with healthy food. Healthy food that doesn't mean plain old fruits and vegetables. Organic food is a regular feature in my meals especially breakfast and snacks. And of course when we dine out and wanna be consciously healthy. Contrary to the general perception that organic is vegetarian, these days organic has amazing offerings just as interesting as any other makan place. Over the weekend it was brunch at Opika the latest organic restaurant to hit town in One Utama ex old wing which has undergone a brilliant transformation.

Bright, airy and clean, this place looks inviting from the outside. The signage says pasaraya which means supermarket. Nothing wrong as Opika will also include a section dedicated to organic groceries including fresh produce.

While waiting for food, we were served water. Water is refillable and free unlike many other place. I regard this as a good gesture.

The soups arrive first. Brilliant idea as I love something warm in my stomach on rainy days. Both the Pumpkin Soup and Mushroom Soup actually taste better than they look. Both are cream free except for garnishing purposes.

The pumpkin soup is hearty and sweet. Opika uses only the pumpkins which are in season and this time of the year its Japanese pumpkins Kabocha which are naturally sweet and even sweeter than butternut squash. Its cream free except for the garnish part and this soup is simply satisfying and hearty. There are some bites of roasted capsicum giving this soup an additional bite and flavour.

If you love earthy Mushroom Soups, then Opika's version will be your fave haunting spot. The mixed mushrooms are blended together. Not too smooth so you can still get little bits of mushroom and of course some sliced mushrooms as well.

I love quinoa. On its own, quinoa is an adorable fluffy seed with a slight nutty flavour to it and is very rich in protein. Opika's Quinoa Salad. Its refreshingly tangy and sweetened with Nipah syrup (similar to maple syrup). In the middle of this delightful bed of quinoa is some lovely sweet mangoes and creamy avocado. The prawns have a good bite and complements this salad well. I must add that the cherry tomatoes is something new to me. Sweet and fragrant as it is infused with vanilla. Opika goes back to basics and uses vanilla pods.

Another ingredient that I love most is scallops. Nothing beats a juicy and tender scallop. The Scallops with Mango Wasabi Sauce is absolutely seductive. Coated with a blend of sesame seeds, house spices bread crumbs and I believe some secret concoction. Check it out and let me know if you can figure out what it is:P

The Linguine with Pinenut Pesto and House Spiced Pan Seared Salmon has the same coating as the Scallop with Mango Wasabi. Pesto lovers will relish this dish which has such a generous serving of pesto. Do remember to inform your waitress if you prefer you pasta al dente.

Craving meatballs? Then the Swedish Style Meatball with Mash Potato is the solution. Each meatball is packed with flavours. Made with lamb, chicken and beef, this Swedish meatball served with some lingonberry is about the best I have had for quite some time. Mashed potatoes are yummy and if you realise its green, that's simply because its a magic mix of mashed potato and green peas. Amazing idea that will have kids and picky eaters eat their peas. Brilliant idea!

Wholesome satisfying meat balls.

Carbonara Fettucine with Grilled Fungi and Grilled Chicken is one creamy pasta. Comforting pasta in a creamy base. My fave part of this dish is the grilled chicken that has been marinated in Opika's blend of herbs.

I am not much of a rice eater but I have a weak spot for nasi ulam. The Nasi Ulam with Percik Chicken is recommended. Lots of yummy ulam with a very flavourful chicken percik. And best of all...free range salted egg!

The food here is not fried and is cooked using healthy red palm oil (which I also use at home ~ and if you like it, the oil is available in Opika).

I love fruit juices and never miss my fruit juice sessions everyday. If I miss it at home, then I must grab one at work. Today is no exception. A blend of different fruits juiced using a slow juicer to ensure the vitamins are retained.

Apple, carrot with lemon. Very refreshing and zesty as lemon rind is also used.

What's a good meal without desserts? I am not much of a black forest cake person. However, Opika's Revised Black Forest Cake with Dark Organic Chocolate and Brandy changed my mind. Not overly sweet with a decadent chocolate that has you craving for more without worrying too much of the expanding waistline.

My fave of the cakes would be the Apple Cake with Walnut Crumble served with a dollop of their Artisan Ice Cream. An alluring play of textures and flavours.

See...organic food isn't all about plain old vegetables with fruits and mee suah or brown rice. Hop over to Opika for yummy organic food.

Still in my holiday mood, I am planning for another holiday. OK..let's call it getaway. And why not Thailand since its close enough for a drive like my 15 hour drive last year to Phuket (read about my drive here) or perhaps a flight for less hassle?

And while going on Google for Thailand, I came across this Visa Thailand campaign. Cute video...and a contest with a prize of a trip to Thailand. Not bad eh?

Burgerlicious Patty

I don't need McDonald's Doubles. Carmel makes thick, satisfying Burgerlicious Patty with double wagyu beef patties, cheese and bacon that keeps the hungry worms in me quiet for 12 hours. And its probably one of the easiest meals that I have made for weekends when pals come over for BBQ, movies or car talk. Its also something different from our regular steak nights.

Ingredients (serves 4):

• Burger buns (I would have loved to make my own if time permitted)

• 400g beef (I opted for wagyu so I could have my burgers tender and juicy)

• 50g bacon for patties

• 50g bacon for layering

• Cheese (I am using aged cheddar cheese)

• 6 garlic bulbs (I prefer smoked garlic)

• Choice of herbs (we use dry rosemary, parsley and basil)

• 1 teaspoon of chilli flakes (optional)

• Black pepper to taste (optional)

• 2 eggs

• Butter for bread

• Mustard (we prefer Dijon)

Instructions:

• Mince beef with bacon. Add in garlic, herbs, spices and chilli flakes. Add 2 eggs so that the patties stick together.

• Shape patties approximately 3/4" thick (a matter of preference).

• Fry bacon.

• Cook patties with the bacon fat 2 minutes on each on medium heat. Add oil if you don't have enough bacon fat. Use a turner to flip so that the patty does not break or crumb. I like the ones from Ikea which has a wooden handle.

• Butter bread and placed buttered side on pan for a crisp fragrant crust.

• Bread or bun as a base.

• A layer of bacon.

• Layer burger patty.

• Spread mustard on beef patty.

• A layer of cheese.

• A layer of patty.

• Spread mustard on beef patty.

• A layer of cheese.

• A layer of bacon.

• Top with bread or bun.

• Serve with lots of love and a salad with fries or mashed potato on the side.

Burgerlicious Patty is wholesome unlike most burgers served outside. Initially I intended to top it with a sunny side up but I realised that I have been eating too much eggs for the past week plus a 4" high burger is big enough. Adding an egg is merely going to make it even tougher for me to take a bite:P Although I would have relished the runny egg all over my juicy burger.

Someone commented on my Facebook page that it was such a waste of the wagyu being used for beef burger. Well, I don't think so. A wagyu beef burger for a refreshing change is fun and good. Not sure what your thoughts are...but at least the humans (and my wormies) at Carmel were happy with Saturday's movie dinner.

Charming Delights at Paradise Inn

The dinner at Paradise Inn at Sunway Pyramid came timely as I knew I would be deprived of good Chinese food during my Bali getaway. Interestingly, Paradise Inn isn't just another Chinese restaurant in town. Its a restaurant, a tea house and a dessert house under one roof. And i just have to add...finally Paradise Inn in in Malaysia.

I arrived 20 minutes earlier and spent some time absorbing the elegant decors of Paradise Inn while enjoying my pot of tea. Hubster dined here last December and has been telling me about the wonderful tea offerings on the menu. It was a good selection of teas. I have to admit that I was a wee lost as to what to choose. I wanted to try something hot and becaus eit was a warm day, I wanted something cold too.

As usual I resorted to one f my fave childhood ryhmes "Inky pinky ponky, father bought a donkey. Donkey died. Father cried. Inky pinky ponky" My choice was jasmine, Osmanthus, Dried Longan and Chrysanthemum. Apparently this tea nourishes the heart and spleen, improves eyesight and immune system. It was a soothing drink to sip before dinner. It was equally soothing and enjoyable when I stayed back to chat with some of the girlfriends whom I have not seen for a few weeks.

And since I wanted something cold, I took some of Andrew's Very Berries Iced Tea. Tangy and refreshing, its a good drink to wake one up and to work out an appetite.

The dishes at Paradise Inn weren't overly salty. Thus there wasn't a need for white rice if not for the gorgeous gravy accompanying some of the dishes.

Good to eat on its own and perhaps highly recommended when you have children dining with you would be the Crisp-Fried Fish with Preserved Bean Paste. Generally we're accustomed to this bean paste preparations with meats. The use of bean paste with fish is interesting and makes an interesting dish to get kids to start eating fish. Crispy and flavourful on the outside while the inside were tender fish.

Crisp-Fried Shrimp Paste Chicken is also another children friendly (and I reckon adults too) dish that should be ordered while we decide what dishes to order from the menu. The fried chicken is marinated with a special prawn paste imported from Hong Kong rather than the local prawn paste or belacan that many places use.

I've always loved ducks. Paradise Inn's Sliced Tea Smoked Duck was absolutely brilliant. Rather addictive to be eaten non its own or with a mouthful of rice. Every bite was an alluring mix of tender meat with flavourful fats.

Poached Chinese Spinach with Egg Trio and Minced Pork in Superior Broth was certainly one of my fave dishes for the night. It wasn't because spinach is one of my fave vegetables. Every mouthful was soft spinach with a generous accompaniment of salted egg and century egg

If you hate eggplants, then the Stewed Eggplant with Minced Pork and Salted Fish in Claypot will probably change your mind about eggplants. The eggplant is soft and absolutely flavourful with the aromatic salted fish and little bites of minced pork

It does seem that coffee pork ribs is becoming quite a popular dish at many eateries these days. The Coffee Pork Ribs had a very light hint of coffee. Each piece of rib is coated generously with the sweet sauce that makes you want to have yet another piece.

Tofu is one of my fave comfort and health food. However this is only of the tofu is rich and beany. The Braised Tofu with Crystal Prawns is made in house. Each piece of tofu is eggy smooth and silky with a rich soya bean taste.

We had 2 types of prawns. I preferred the Crisp-Fried Crystal Prawns with Salted Egg Yolk. I loved the idea that the prawns were shelled and as such every bite was coated with the richness of the creamy salted egg.

The Crisp-Fried Crystal Prawns in Wasabi Mayo Sauce for last so that it does not overwhelm our taste buds with the wasabi. A light hint of wasabi with creamy mayonnaise this dish was tad plain for my taste buds since I love my wasabi to be fiery:P

The Braised Vermicelli with Pork Trotters was amazing. Hubster enjoyed this dish when he was invited for the opening of Paradise Inn. And when I tasted it, it was simply awesome. Juicy tender pork trotters braised in soya sauce. The vermicelli soaks up the goodness of the meat juices and sauce making one totally forget what plain vermicelli actually taste like.

Paradise Inn dishes out an amazing Supreme Seafood Fried Rice. Looks can be deceiving This plain looking fried rice was cooked with enough "wk hei" necessary in bringing out even the plainest fried rice. Coupled with a generous mix of tobiko (fish roe), scallop and prawns, this is quite a luxurious rice with amazing flavours.

I am a Cantonese girl and soups are a must. I was delighted to see the double boiled soups piping hot and aromatic. There were 2 soups for dinner - Double-Boiled Water Goby with Spare Ribs and Fresh Apple and the Double-Boiled Sea Whelk with Spare Ribs and Chinese Yam (RM39.90). Each soup was absolutely flavourful and was just as good as how granny makes them. Such happy nostalgic feelings...I will return for the soups to nourish my body and my soul.

Covered yet one can smell the beautiful aromas. Each pot serves 2 to 4 persons.

Definitely piping hot.

And I save one of the best for last. Stewed Pork Belly served with Lotus Bun is highly recommended. The stewed pork belly is also commonly known as "kao yok". Good to eat on its own with its rich tender melt in the mouth meat or make a Chinese sandwich.

The teas and dishes were lovely. And desserts were just as fabulous. Take your pick from the list if hot and cold desserts. My favourites for the night is the Double-boiled Hasma with Red Dates and Longan. I must admit that was impressed that the hasma was properly cleaned (quite a tedious task actually) and the tongsui (sweet syrup) wasn't overly sweet and has a delightful red dates flavour to it. Red dates and hasma are good for our skin and this is something I definitely need with my recent bout of breakouts.

If one has over eaten and need something to soothe the palates and stomach, then the Chilled Lemongrass Jelly with Lemonade would be your solution.

Andrew's choice of Mango Sago was a good choice too. Creamy real mangoes make this a healthy dessert with a thick rich mango puree with bits of sweet delightful pomelo.

This restaurant is relatively new in Malaysia. However its definitely here to stay as it is actually part of the Paradise Group in Singapore reknowned for its quality Chinese cuisines. So hop over to Paradise Inn for a taste of authentic chinese dishes complete with an Oriental ambience without burning a hole in your pockets.

Sunset at Sandy Bay

We arrived early at Sandy Bay for dinner. The Beach Club had quite a selection of wines. Nothing overly expensive but certainly an interesting selection of value for money good wines. We opted for a Chilean. Santa Ema Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 D.O. Maipo Valley while we watch the sun go down and breathe in the freshness of the ocean.

A delightful ruby red which was perfect for our relaxed evening. It was an easy wine which paired very well with the meat dishes that we ordered for dinner. However it was just as brilliant on its own with hints of vanilla and sweet berries that Elle and I finished it before our dinner arrived while the boys contented themselves with their whiskeys.

As I pen this one week after the experience, I am transported back to my evening at Sandy Bay at Nusa Lembongan. I can't wait to return in 6 months time. Till then, its life in KL and perhaps a few Malaysian beach holidays in between.

Energizer Night Race Malaysia 2012

I ran in the Energizer Night Race last year. It was a fabulous and maddening experience (read more here). Though the event itself was kinda messed up by the event organiser, the run itself was nevertheless a very good and fun experience. Afterall its not everyday that I get to walk or run on Sepang International Circuit. Driving on it during our track sessions is a different ball game altogether.

Yesterday, Energizer Malaysia launched the brand new website for Energizer Night Race 2012 www.energizernightrace.com.my. The much awaited race is on Saturday 21st April 2012.

This year’s race will be held at the Sepang International Circuit for the second time on the 21st of April this year, and will be open to 5,000 participants. The race will have three categories – 42km, 15.5km and 5.5km – which involve running on the iconic Sepang International Circuit racetrack in part or in its entirety.

Answering questions from the crowd including yours truly, we were assured that last year's misadventure would not repeat itself. To start it on the right foot, Twenty-First Century Sports Sdn Bhd has been appointed as the race organiser and director after considering feedback from previous participants as well as the company’s experience and track record. Twenty First Century Sports is a sports event specialist with an expertise in major road races and marathons, especially night races including last October's Putrajaya Night Marathon.

And for further assurance, here's a recap of some of the commitment given:

• Water stations every 2.5km. And if we were to look into it totality, we can expect approxiamtely 30 water stations for the 3 categories.

• Assured plentiful directional markers and in case we have people who think its funny to mess with directional markers, this event will see marshals and volunteers being placed strategically to assist runners.

• Spectators will not be joining the runners in the paddock and track area for the run. Instead they will be watching from the grandstand. Activities and refreshments will also be offered at the mall area.

• Addressing the "tunnel of death", the tunnels will be ventilated this time. To make it safer, only runners will be walking through this tunnel.

• Running clinics will be held in March 2012 to prepare runners. So stay tuned!

• The run is only opened to 5,000 runners this years. Yes the number has been halved as Energizer and Twenty First Century Sports want to get back to basics i.e. runners' safety first.

• Timing chips will be provided for 15.5km and 42km runners.

• This year's run has been designed with 3 categories to avoid runners confusion.

And for every successful registration, RM10 will be donated to Kiwanis Malaysia. With every purchase of Energizer battery packs from March to May this year. With every pack sold, 30 sen will be set aside for the contribution to Kiwanis Malaysia. Energizer’s key distributors and business partners have also pledged donations that will see Energizer and Kiwanis are targeting fund raising of RM340,000 via this 3 channels.

All that being said, I have registered myself to run 15.5km this year. This would be a good motivation for me to work towards my half marathon target for 2012. And I reckon I should be able to run quite well with the new orange tee. It looks energetic and coupled with my Agel supplements that has arrived..I am hoping for a good run. Original Recipe Briyani at Restoran Ismail

Restoran Ismail in TTDI has been one of our regular haunts for nasi briyani in town the last few years. I would not say that it is the best in town but it is good enough to justify a return trips. And strangely without fail, we will order the chicken briyani.

The briyani rice is cooked with basmati rice. Flavourful and less starchy than regular rice if you hate the idea of carboloading, then this is a place for you to carboload in peace:P The fried chicken is lightly marinated and nothing overpowering. My fave is always the crunchy skin and batter. Sinful but yes its worth it:P

At Restoran Ismail, the acar (pickled vegetable) isn't the regular ones. It has a slight chilly sauce to it. Sounds unappealing but it taste good. I have a habit of asking for an extra serving as the cucumber is nice and crisp.

The dhall is lovely with a chunky soft vegetables in it. I supposed this is a way of making up for eating too much fried chicken?

Or perhaps opt for the fish curry. It is also very delightful. Again its not overly spicy making it quite suitable for those with lighter tastebuds

And when one visits this place, look all the way to the back of the eatery beside the window. You'll see a motivation word of the day. The latest that I see is "Trouble brings experience and experience brings wisdom". I wonder what's the next one when I visit?

Penang Snake Temple

Snakes freak me out. And it is for that very reason that I have never stepped foot into the Penang Snake Temple which is also known as Hock Kin Keong or Cheng Hoon Giam. Snakes...big or small they are scary!

Every year I return to Penang for numerous times and it wasn't until the recent 3,2,1-STOP @ BHR that I actually stepped into the temple and remained in it for a good 15 minutes. This has to be one of the longest 20 minutes of my life. I just had to do it. How could I write about this snake temple which is possibly the only of its kind in the world if I do not step in to see and experience it myself?

This temple was built in honour of a deity named Chor Soo Kong. It is believed that the snakes somehow made their way to this temple as soon as it was built. And to this day there are certainly snakes and quite plenty of them here. The snakes were everywhere. One just needs to look around and you'll see them chilling or coiled on tree branches or if indoors then look at the decors or above you.

Apparently these snakes are actually venomous and their fangs are left intact. As to why they don't attack or bite...Some believe the incense being burnt in the temple numbs or paralyses the snakes. The devotees believe that the snakes will not harm humans as they are officers or the deity Chor Soo Kong. Either way, I am just glad no one got bitten.

Look around and you may just see even a snake skin like this one. Actually, I did overhear someone say that the skin could be used for his wife's purse. Aiks!

And if you're adventurous or brave enough for a picture with a snake like these 2 ladies, you could have your picture taken for a small fee. Me? Seeing from a distance is enough!

This Snake Temple in Sungai Kluang is not far from the Penang Airport and I would recommend this to be a stop since its merely 5 minutes away and is pretty much along the way to town.

High T42 @ Bistro 42

It wasn't a random day for high tea. After visiting Bistro 42in Bangsar Village II for a morning coffee session for Alexander Shorokhoff watch launch (Read more here), I told myself that a return is a must and in particular their famed High T42.

Some weeks back during one of our many public holidays in January, I swung by to Bistro 42 to experience its High T42. Its available daily between 3pm to 6pm at RM59.80 for two to share accompanied by our choice of tea or coffee. Quite a good deal!

We quickly ordered since we knew what we wanted. However, service seemed slow. We were not the only table that had asked what happened to our food or drinks. Imagine waiting almost 15 minutes for your tea:P

Tea finally arrives. I opted for my all time fave Lemongrass and Ginger which has a zesty lemongrass touch and a subtle ginger taste to it. Refreshing and it kinda works out the appetite quite a bit. My partner in crime opts for the Relax blend of chamomile and hibiscus with a touch of juniper and lemon balm. Both teas were great on its own and does not require the honey served on the side. However if you like it sweet, no harm adding honey.

Food arrives. 3 tiers and this is what we get:

Savouries

• Cucumber & cream cheese finger sandwiches

• Egg mayo & ranch chicken sandwiches on baby cuboid loaves

• House cured salmon open sandwich with dill mascarpone on danish toast (awesome danish toast that were rich and fluffy)

• Mini quiche lorraines

Sweets

• Freshly baked scones with clotted cream and berry preserves (I wouldn't mind coming back for the scones which were delightfully rich)

• Baby Raspberry jam doughnuts, macarons, madeleines and marshmallows (the raspberry jam doughnuts are sweet with the sugar and jam but its quite a delightful sweetness that makes you want more especially when taken with tea)

And a dessert form display. We were both lazy to move to check the desserts and left it to the waitress to decide for us. Hmmm...I didn't quite like what she chose but I can't blame her as we were both lazy to take the walk. It was awfully sweet and tasted flat. A tip is also to ask them to serve you the dessert from display after your meal if you like the cakes cold as they should be.

Watch the bill when you pay as we were given a bill of RM90+ for the High T42. What happened? Someone keyed in 2 pots of tea when we were entitled to our choice tea or coffee. Everything was duly rectified when we pointed out but this questions the level of service...perhaps it was a public holiday syndrome? Not too sure but I'll see what happens in our next scheduled visit that we have planned.

Warung Babi Guling Ibu Oka

What's a visit to Babi and not try out the Babi Guling? Unfortunately time did not permit me to visit Ubud to check out Warung Babi Guling Ibu Oka in Ubud. However, Warung Ibu Oka's famous Babi Guling was delivered to me for me to eat in the comforts of my room in Royal Beach Seminyak. Oh! Babi Guling is what we commonly know as suckling pig.

Even though it was packed and endured a couple of hours on the road as if was strangely jammed between Ubud and Seminyak on Thursday, every piece of the Babi Guling was happily and rather quickly finished up by hubster and I. Some of the skin was still crispy in general although a few were a wee chewy but its still yummy nevertheless. This I attribute to the 2 hours jam that the packed Babi Guling endured. The meat was definitely nice and flavourful.

A specialty in Bali itself, Babi Guling is marinated with some signature Balinese spice mix before its roasted. Priced between Rp25,000 to Rp40,000, its actually quite a good and cheap satisfying meal. I enjoyed the rice, pork itself and the aromatic gravy but the mixed vegetable was a not to my liking. Perhaps it is because of the desiccated coconut which seemed kinda overwhelming. Super addictive, I felt even hungrier when we finished the Babi Guling. No wonder Jon and El ate 5 servings on their own!

And it certainly went well with the Penfolds Koonunga Hill Seventy Six Shiraz Cabernet that our pal Jon served us with the Babi Guling! Medium bodied with luscious berry and plum flavours, it certainly complimented the salty flavourful Babi Guling. I was in porky heaven:D

It was a tasty experience even though it survived a 2 hours journey. My next return to Bali later this year warrants me to include this on the my planning list. The list to be eaten at the Warung Babi Guling Ibu Oka in Ubud itself!

Eating Yogurt Made Easy

Simply colourful, yummy and healthy

Eating yogurt really is a simple thing because it is simply yummy and healthy. Most importantly, it is good for our guts as it puts back the good fellas (bacterias) into our stomach or balances our stomach acids that can be upset with our choice of food, stress, illness or medication.

Last year after my hospital stay for a strange viral attack (read here), I had pretty much lost my appetite for some time and it only progressively resumed when I started taking yogurt daily. Imagine me be filed with only 2 mouthful of solids. Crazy!

back to the topic...how does one make eating yogurt easy?

• Start with flavoured yogurt like mango ones

• Or have a yogurt drink instead of eating yogurt

• Add in choice fruits or nuts as toppings

Implemented the above and voila...I have converted hubster into a yogurt lover. Now he eats plain yogurt (but with fruit and nuts toppings).

Room Eighteen @ Berjaya Times Square

We visited Room Eighteen in Berjaya Times Square after a lovely Chocolate Spa treat. We were all hungry and we need food with different "requirements".

Hungry and while waiting, we were served these slightly spicy chips. Yummy but not a good idea if you're nursing a bad throat which is quite common after all the CNY goodies and Mandarin Oranges.

Food was decently prompt but the services was certainly "blur". Imagined being served your food minus any spoon for you to eat your food. Think fried rice and soupy noodles:P

The Signature Pumpkin Fried Rice smelt and definitely tasted good. Rice is not overly wet or oily and had delightful bits of ripe sweet pumpkin in every bite.

I can't think of what could possibly go wrong with the Prawn Wanton Noodle in Hot Soup which I reckon nothing went wrong since William quite happily slurped everything up.

Hubster's Trio Combination Noodle looked promising. Unfortunately the roast pork was no where crispy which is such a downer. There was nothing special with the gravy either and I think I would prefer the ones at Nippy Noodle House anytime over this.

Merryn ordered Bakuteh Noodle. Not the best in town but its certainly not the worst. It didn't seem to have enough of the meaty goodness which makes a bakuteh good. It had the necessary tofu pok , mushroom and of course meat but it stopped there.

See what I meant that food is decently prompt? I order Pumpkin Congee (as an add on under their Hot Stone menu for RM3) but it never arrived till I reminded them 5 minutes after I received my Hot Stone Spring Chicken and Wanton Soup. Again the soup lacked any meaty goodness. It somehow tasted more like a light herbal spring onion soup. Granted that the spring chicken was really yummy and tender. Wanton was good but nothing to shout about.

Pumpkin Congee was good. Creamy pumpkin well blended with the porridge, this could be a good porridge on its own but I certainly had no idea why was the wait so long:P

The Hot Stone menu also allows me to have the Chilled White Fungus and Dried Longan drink for RM1. This is a good buy and it certainly tasted good.

Room Eighteen at Berjaya Times Square is a mixture of hits and misses. I have tasted better food at the other outlets of Room Eighteen.

My First Private Chartered Flight with Berjaya Air

Some months back, I joined some fellow media pals on a 3,2,1-STOP @ BHR trip by Berjaya Hotels and Resorts (BHR). The first of the many posts to come will be on my experience on Berjaya Air which flew us to Penang and Langkawi.

It was a new experience for me as this was my first on a private charter. Yes, the folks at BHR actually chartered from Berjaya Air the ATR 72-500 which sits 72 passengers for the 35 of us. Some may argue its quite a waste as BHR could have chartered the Dash 7 which sits 48 passengers. We are told its for our comfort plus the spare seats could be useful for our shopping...I like that thought!

Nasi Kukus Ayam Berempah: Celcom

Ever since I tasted nasi kukus ayam berempah in Kemaman, I've been trying to find one in KL that is good or even better than that in Kemaman. One good and a frequent favourite for me and my fellow tamchiaks who have eaten the one in Kemaman is at a simple food court behind Celcom / Menara Naluri along Jalan Ampang.

This stall used to be manned by a pakcik but is now manned by his kids. It still taste the good even under the children which I suspect they do have a "central kitchen" as they're operating also in Cheras.

Nasi kukus simply means the rice is steamed. Rice is nice and fluffy with a delicate pandan (screwpine) flavour and ts made better since its servedon banana leaf!

The gravy or I call it kuah gulai is delightfully fragrant with an assortment of spices. And its actually not spicy. The spicy / hot taste comes from the green sambal made of cili padi.

Equally important is the spiced fried chicken. Make a choice of regular chicken or spring chicken. Either way, each and every chicken is well marinated with an assortment of ingredients including fennel seed, lemongrass, onions, curry powder and garlic.

Grab a salted egg as well as it goes really well with the Nasi Kukus Ayam Berempah.

And if you love a good spicy rich soup, ask for a bowl of soup kosong i.e. plain soup with the meaty goodness beef and lots of spices.

If you're keen to try it out never mind the heat (this food court only has fans and canopies) then head over to Celcom in Jalan Ampang (beside MCA building). Smack behind Celcom and Menara Naluri is the said food court. The food court is only opened during weekday breakfast and lunch though this yummy Nasi Kukus Ayam Berempah is available from 1030am only.

Say Hello to Reckless. This little lady is actually a Toyota MRS but she has over time grown with her Reckless kit from Japan and if records are correct, she is the only Reckless MRS in Asia outside Japan. She has matured not just in looks but of course she's been fitted with a different from her initial 1ZZW30 days to her current 2ZZGE self.
