Some of you may know this youtube video I uploaded in 2009: First Person Shooter – Desert Map.

I got two requests to share the game map, and since I don’t have anything to do with it anymore, I guess it’s a great Idea to give it to you as a Christmas gift.

It’s a map for the C4 Engine, a desert scene, with some nice shaders and terrain, models and textures. You are welcome to use it for anything you want. If you use it in something which becomes popular, please make it known that you downloaded it from 3D-Source. Thank you.

The Download Includes the free C4 Engine Demo, version 1.5.9, the map and the texture files it requires in order to load properly. It’s a zip arhive of 485 Mb.

In the fast growing environment of the game industry, developers must adopt new methodologies as the game worlds are becoming more and more complex, video cards are more powerful and able to process a larger number of polygons per view than ever before, new technologies which enable advanced rendering are hitting the market, with all this emerging, the core units of a game world – the 3d models – are advancing too. From very low poly models with a simple texture map to complex 3d models with more than one texture map, maps for relief, shininess, glow and detail, complex shaders and a much bigger number of polygons in their composition, 3d models today are now, more than ever before, required in very large numbers and variations to compose the awesome game worlds of todays and tomorrows games.

Authoring 3d models for games is not easy, nor is it  done in an instant, unless, of course, there is a chance to find a model available for purchase that is similar to the one needed in your games world. But even that will cost money.
Unfortunately, the costs for creating 3d game assets are much bigger than the price of a 3d models available for purchase on a website, unless that price is fabulously high. This means that buying a 3d model is much more reasonable for you, as the amount of money required for doing this is significantly smaller compared to the time and money you spend if you chose to make the 3d asset.

Some sites – one of them is Turbosquid, the leading online 3d marketplace – claims that, on average, customers save over 20 hours of modeling time when they buy a 3d model. Now I don’t know what arguments they would use to back this affirmation, whether some tests were ran or something like that, but it is indisputable that making 3d models for your games is much more expensive – considering both time and money – than buying it.

Admittedly, most of the time it’s very difficult to find the perfect model, but still, it will take little time to make some adjustments to a model, definitely not as much as it takes to start developing one from the start.

As game graphics are pushed to the limits, the need for more entertainment provided through enjoyable gameplay is coming to the fore.

3D-Source was recently launched to provide a mean to deal with this situation.
It is intended to become the way to go for game graphics development, a library that will help game developers focus on what’s really important – the gameplay and the story – by providing quality resources to shorten the time spent on dealing with the graphics.

No additional work is required to make the model good for a game, the model is ready to be imported in your game engine, or, if needed, edited at your likings before being imported in your game environment.

We added a blog section to our site, where we will post news, updates and information from the development process of our 3d model game assets.
You can find it in the menu.

Together with this major update to our website, we have added some minor tweaks:

1. An Improved Design
2. Updated assets standards
3. Added a downloads counter
4. A better Newsletter plug-in

We hope that this blogging section will give aspiring artists the opportunity to learn more about the workflow involved in developing next-gen game assets; and a pleasant information for game developers or modders.

New Standards in our 3D Model Game Assets

The new standards, labelled “(3D-Source) 3D Model v1.1” are an improvement to our next-gen standards, required to keep up-to-date with the quality of todays game assets.

New features and modifications are :

• Removed size(dimensions) information (it wasn’t really useful)
• Modification in the image previews of the model. The new previews are in 800x800px. With the following changes :
  • 4 or more Renders with light to simulate a game environment.
  • at least two renders with normal light
  • two wireframe renders from opposite angles
  • one preview with normal relief(no diffuse texture), and
  • probably one with shaded view (no textures at all).
• New download link address (www.3d-source.com/download/name of the download)
• Improved quality of the 3d models
• Improved quality in the textures, with a much higher texture resolutions. Now the client will download the HD version of the texture and it will have to reduce the size of the texture in accordance with its project preferences. We decided to provide the best possible quality, and let the client chose what limitations to set.
• Removed file size specification, because it felt unnecessary.
