In May 2025, Ross Edgley — ultra-endurance athlete, adventurer and ocean advocate — will embark on one of the most audacious feats in modern exploration: swimming the entire coastline of Iceland, a distance exceeding 1,000 miles (1,610 km), in just 100 days.

The challenge, aptly named The Great Icelandic Swim, is more than a test of physical and mental limits. It’s a mission driven by science, sustainability, and a deep respect for the ocean’s fragile ecosystems — all powered by BMW, with the all-electric BMW iX serving as the expedition’s official support vehicle.

Pushing the Limits of Endurance in the Land of Fire and Ice

Edgley, who made history in 2018 as the first person to swim around Great Britain and again in 2024 with the world’s longest non-stop river swim down the Yukon, describes this next challenge as his most formidable yet. Iceland’s coastline is renowned for its beauty — and its brutality.

With 20-metre waves, sub-zero waters, sandstorms, and volcanic ash winds reaching 260 km/h, the North Atlantic offers a punishing backdrop. To succeed, Edgley will need to swim over 30 km per day, facing down killer whales, sea ice, and sheer physical exhaustion.

“It’s like swimming the English Channel every single day — but in water as cold as 1°C,” Edgley notes.

Swimming for Science: A Citizen Science Expedition

Beyond the athleticism lies a pioneering citizen science mission. Partnering with top researchers from the University of Iceland, University of Victoria (Canada), and the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute of Iceland, Edgley will collect daily eDNA samples to help map marine biodiversity and microplastic distribution in coastal waters.

The expedition is a vital part of the EU BioProtect project, giving researchers unprecedented access to Iceland’s rarely studied coastal zones — regions often inaccessible due to the lack of small research vessels. The standout performer for the BMW Group continues to be its ambitious push into the electric vehicle (EV) sector. European and American Markets Drive Growth

BMW Group’s performance outside of China remains impressive. Sales in Europe rose by 6.2%, while in the US, the Group saw a healthy 4.0% increase in deliveries. The positive results reflect the continued appeal of BMW’s diverse product lineup, which spans multiple drive technologies.

“The growth in both Europe and the US is especially encouraging as it demonstrates the strength of our portfolio across different markets and customer segments,” Goller continued. “We are also seeing substantial order growth in Germany, our home market, which adds to our confidence as we head into the rest of 2025.”

In total, the BMW brand delivered 520,142 vehicles, slightly down by 2.0% from the previous year. However, it is worth noting the brand’s strong performance in the BEV sector, with 86,449 BMW BEVs delivered, representing a 9.9% increase in global sales for fully-electric vehicles.

MINI and Rolls-Royce Continue to Thrive

MINI continues to shine, with global deliveries reaching 64,626 units—an increase of 4.1%. The brand’s commitment to electrification is paying off, with fully-electric MINI models making up an impressive 35.3% of total sales in the first quarter. This result further affirms MINI’s role in BMW Group’s electrification strategy, especially as demand for electric vehicles grows across markets.

Rolls-Royce, on the other hand, experienced a slight decline, with 1,381 units delivered in the first quarter, representing a 9.4% decrease compared to the same period in 2024. While the luxury marque faced a softening in demand, the overall results reflect a broader market trend rather than a downturn for Rolls-Royce’s elite offerings.

Milestones Ahead for BMW Group

Looking ahead, BMW Group is on track to reach two major milestones in 2025: the production of three million electrified vehicles (BEVs and PHEVs) since the launch of the pioneering BMW i3 and BMW i8, and the delivery of 1.5 million fully-electric vehicles. However, in Europe, the Group saw a notable increase of 6.2%, driven by strong performances in countries like Germany, where 61,264 units were delivered despite a slight decline of 1.3%. In the Americas, BMW Group’s performance was positive, with deliveries up by 5.4%, and the US showing a solid growth of 4.1%.
