In the world of Bespoke design, where personal narrative fuses with artisanal mastery, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has once again redefined what it means to drive a story. The Black Badge Cullinan Daisy, a singular creation from the marque’s illustrious Bespoke division, transforms a personal connection to nature into a breathtaking automotive expression – one that balances strength, serenity, and sensory richness in a uniquely modern idiom.

Commissioned by a client whose professional success is rooted in the outdoor and adventure equipment sector, this one-of-one Cullinan Series II draws inspiration from a deeply personal symbol of resilience: a field of daisies along a favourite hiking trail in the High Tatras mountains. A place of solace and clarity, this trail serves as the conceptual backbone of the Black Badge Cullinan Daisy – a narrative interwoven into every surface, every stitch, and every subtle detail of the commission.

“I envisioned Black Badge Cullinan Daisy as a symbol of perseverance – balancing strength with serenity,” the commissioning client notes. “I’m continuously amazed not only by the beauty but the resilience of this flower that seems to thrive in the face of nature’s challenges.”

Exterior: Quiet Power, Natural Grace

The visual language of Black Badge Cullinan Daisy begins with contrast – an intentional dialogue between delicate softness and assertive confidence. A Powder Blue exterior sets a tranquil tone, while the darkened Black Badge Pantheon Grille, Spirit of Ecstasy, and high-gloss brightwork anchor the vehicle in the signature strength of the Black Badge ethos.

Delicately hand-painted along the single Coachline is the daisy motif itself – a quiet yet powerful declaration of the theme. Here, the natural world is neither ornamental nor sentimental. It is celebrated as a force.

Interior Suite: Sculpted Serenity

Step inside, and the narrative deepens. The daisy motif reappears in the most unexpected of places: the fascia and waterfall section, both crafted in Blackwood. What sets this commission apart is a revolutionary wood sandblasting technique – a precision process that delicately removes microscopic layers of veneer using fine mineral particles. The result is a textural symphony of light and shadow that creates a sculpted, three-dimensional daisy in relief. It’s tactile poetry – design you can feel.

This intricate treatment is supported by a refined three-tone leather palette. Fleet Blue dominates, wrapping the Rotary Controls and pillars in an oceanic calm. Selby Grey and Black leather provide complementary sophistication, while contrast piping and embroidered headrest monograms inject visual rhythm and restraint. Even the treadplates are bespoke, softly illuminated and etched with the same daisy motif that ties the interior to its alpine inspiration.

Bespoke Umbrellas: Rain and Resilience

Subtle whimsy arrives with the Cullinan’s Bespoke umbrellas – often overlooked yet lovingly considered. Housed in the rear Coach Doors, these rain-ready accessories reveal the daisy motif on their interior lining, evoking the image of flowers in bloom against the soft percussion of a mountain shower. It’s a reminder that even in the rain, beauty finds a way to flourish.

Starlight Headliner: Mapping the Cosmos

Above, the Bespoke Starlight Headliner reimagines the client’s connection to the stars. This constellation-strewn canvas includes Ursa Major, Ursa Minor, Gemini and Taurus – all chosen for their prominence in the night sky over the northern latitudes. As with the daisy field below, these constellations above serve as enduring symbols of navigation, resilience, and wonder.

Recreation Module: Crafted for the Journey

Completing this story is the Recreation Module, seamlessly integrated into the Cullinan’s luggage compartment. This automatically-deployable storage unit is tailored to hold the client’s favourite hiking equipment – transforming luxury not just into utility, but into readiness for adventure. The call of the wild, after all, doesn’t wait.

“This commission challenged us to explore how natural motifs can be translated through craft and materiality,” says Martina Starke, General Manager of Bespoke Design at Rolls-Royce. “It also represents a different kind of Bespoke language where emotion is captured through restrained and thoughtful contrasts.”

An Icon Reimagined

The Black Badge Cullinan Daisy is far more than a bespoke creation – it is an emotional statement, an ode to nature’s elegance and strength, and a love letter to the journeys that shape us. It exemplifies the very best of what Rolls-Royce’s Bespoke programme can offer: not merely a car, but a canvas. And in this case, one daisy at a time, a legacy in bloom.

Monday 14 April 2025, Goodwood, West Sussex — In the culminating chapter of its year-long Models of the Marque retrospective, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars turns its gaze not to a single landmark model, but to a lineage of experimental masterpieces—vehicles that embody the spirit of innovation and exploration at the heart of the brand’s modern renaissance. This final feature honours the EX cars of the Goodwood era, experimental motor cars conceived from 2004 onwards, which together represent the first true ‘heritage’ models of the 21st-century Rolls-Royce story.

As part of the brand’s 120th-anniversary celebration—marking the pivotal 1904 meeting between Henry Royce and The Hon. Charles Stewart Rolls—this final instalment offers a fitting tribute to a tradition of experimentation that has shaped the marque for over a century.

A New Era of Experimentation

The EX lineage is deeply rooted in the marque’s engineering DNA. From 1EX in 1919 to 45EX in 1958, these early experimental models allowed Rolls-Royce engineers to test new ideas, technologies, and design directions, far from the constraints of production lines. After a hiatus of nearly half a century, the tradition was revived at the newly established Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood. The first modern experimental car, 100EX, emerged in 2004—just a year after production began on Phantom VII—heralding a bold new age of creativity.

Andrew Ball, Head of Corporate Relations and Heritage at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, explains,

“Experimental models are not and never have been concept cars at Rolls-Royce. They are fully functioning vehicles—platforms for real-world innovation. Though every EX model is unique, they all uphold the Rolls-Royce philosophy of respecting the past while constantly focusing on the future.”

Each Goodwood-era EX car is instantly recognisable by its red ‘Double-R’ badge, a distinctive marker reserved exclusively for these pioneering creations.

100EX (2004) – A Centenary Statement

The unveiling of 100EX at the 2004 Geneva Motor Show was a watershed moment. An open-top, four-seat drophead with a dynamic profile inspired by motor yachts, it was both a celebration of the brand’s centenary and a manifesto for the new Goodwood philosophy.

Built on a shortened aluminium spaceframe and powered by a monumental 9-litre V16 engine, 100EX hinted at the opulence and boldness to come. With teak decking, a boat-tail rear, and an advanced fabric roof lined in cashmere and wool, it set new standards for craftsmanship. It would later evolve into the celebrated Phantom Drophead Coupé, a model now regarded as one of the most desirable Rolls-Royces of the modern age.

101EX (2006) – A Coupé Vision Realised

In 2006, 101EX offered a glimpse into what a Rolls-Royce coupé of the future might look like. More compact and performance-focused than the Phantom, it featured carbon fibre bodywork and a lower, sportier stance.

Most notably, 101EX introduced the now-iconic Starlight Headliner—a celestial canopy of fibre-optic lights that has since become one of the marque’s most beloved Bespoke features. The car’s DNA would carry over into the Phantom Coupé launched in 2008, and ultimately into Wraith and beyond.

200EX (2009) – The Blueprint for Ghost

With 200EX, Rolls-Royce made its intentions clear: this was a prototype destined for production. Sleeker, more dynamic and aimed at a younger clientele, 200EX previewed the first-generation Ghost.

Launched officially in 2010, Ghost would go on to become the most commercially successful model in Rolls-Royce history. Its design, with cleaner lines, less formality, and a focus on driving pleasure, signalled a pivotal moment in broadening the brand’s reach without compromising its essence.

102EX (2011) – Electric Vision, Global Mission

As the world began shifting toward electrification, Rolls-Royce responded with 102EX—the world’s first fully electric super-luxury vehicle. Officially known as the Phantom Experimental Electric (EE), 102EX was no static showpiece. It undertook a global tour, inviting feedback from clients, media, and engineers in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and North America.

More than a decade before the arrival of Spectre, 102EX laid the foundation for the marque’s transition to all-electric luxury, validating the vision once espoused by Charles Rolls in 1900: that electric power would one day be “cleaner and quieter” than its combustion counterpart.

103EX (2016) – Visionary Luxury Reimagined

Commissioned as part of the BMW Group’s centenary celebrations, 103EX represented a striking leap into the future. Unveiled at London’s Roundhouse, it was not bound by production feasibility but instead expressed Rolls-Royce’s vision of personalised, autonomous luxury mobility.

Built around the idea of ‘The Grand Sanctuary’, 103EX reimagined the passenger experience with a spacious, lounge-like interior and zero-emissions powertrain. Though a pure design study, it directly influenced the development of the Spectre and the wider shift toward sustainable, intelligent vehicles.

Legacy of Innovation

The EX models of the Goodwood era are far more than technical curiosities. They are bold declarations of possibility—vehicles that dared to explore uncharted territory. Some, like 100EX and 200EX, paved the way for successful production models. Others, like 102EX and 103EX, served as beacons lighting the path toward electrification and autonomous experiences.

As Rolls-Royce draws its Models of the Marque series to a close, the EX cars stand as a testament to the marque’s unwavering commitment to evolution without compromise. They embody a philosophy where heritage fuels innovation and experimentation is not a detour, but a defining journey in the pursuit of automotive excellence.

In the quiet stillness of the Sussex countryside, where the past and future intersect at the Home of Rolls-Royce, the EX cars continue to whisper possibilities—and to echo the enduring spirit of Royce and Rolls’ first meeting, 120 years ago.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Manchester has officially unveiled its newly redesigned showroom – a space that redefines automotive retail with the same peerless attention to detail, craftsmanship and elegance that defines every car bearing the iconic Spirit of Ecstasy. Located in the picturesque suburb of Wilmslow, Cheshire, this contemporary yet timeless showroom is more than just a retail environment – it is an immersive, sensorial space that echoes the marque’s global luxury aspirations and its storied connection with the city of Manchester.

A Heritage Reimagined for the Modern Client

The unveiling marks a pivotal moment in the brand’s continued evolution. While Rolls-Royce is renowned for its rich heritage, it is equally focused on the future. Nowhere is that balance more evident than in this new facility, where modern design sensibilities harmonise with historical reverence. After all, it was in Manchester – at the Midland Hotel in 1904 – where Charles Rolls and Henry Royce first met, igniting a partnership that would forever change the automotive world.

“Manchester has long been an important place for Rolls-Royce,” said Boris Weletzky, Regional Director for the UK, Europe and Central Asia at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. “The new showroom, with its wealth of innovative digital technologies and elegant, luxurious design, marks an important step for the marque and our clients.”

Designed for the Discerning: Innovation Meets Intuition

From the moment clients arrive, they are enveloped in a world that is distinctly Rolls-Royce. The entrance – inspired by the marque’s iconic Pantheon grille – sets the tone for the opulence within. Above it, the Spirit of Ecstasy quietly watches over, a symbol of aspiration and excellence.

Inside, the showroom is a sanctuary of modern luxury. Warm lighting, refined textures, and curated design elements establish an atmosphere that encourages inspiration and expression. Every detail has been meticulously chosen to resonate with a younger, more diverse demographic of global clients, while remaining faithful to the marque’s core values.

At the heart of the experience is the Atelier – a sensorial playground where dreams begin to take shape. Clients can explore a tactile selection of materials, from hand-stitched leathers rolled on umbrella-inspired wands to rare wood veneers shaped like aerofoils – a nod to Charles Rolls’ passion for aviation. Colour samples, finishes, and textiles are displayed in the brand’s signature speedform shape, helping clients to envision the unique identity of their commission.

Adding to the richness of the experience is the Cabinet of Curiosities – an eclectic and artistic collection of objects designed to ignite imagination and spark conversation. This space isn’t just about car buying; it’s about storytelling, heritage, and co-creation.

A Testament to a Distinguished Journey

For Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Manchester, this opening is also a celebration of an extraordinary legacy. As one of the marque’s most decorated dealerships, it has consistently set new benchmarks for excellence. Most recently, the team earned the title of Global Provenance Dealer of the Year in 2024 and co-created the Manchester Ghost in 2023 – a unique, one-of-one Bespoke commission that paid tribute to the city’s industrial heritage and creative spirit.

Managing Director Jon Crossley reflected on the milestone:
“We’re proud to mark 30 years of partnership with the marque by unveiling a facility that truly reflects the excellence of Rolls-Royce. This space offers our clients an elevated experience, blending heritage with cutting-edge technology and showcasing the pinnacle of craftsmanship.”

The Future of Luxury, Rooted in Legacy

As Rolls-Royce continues to evolve as a global luxury goods brand, showrooms like this one in Wilmslow play a critical role in connecting the marque’s timeless heritage with its forward-looking vision. It is a place where tradition meets innovation, where every interaction is personal, and where every commission begins as a story waiting to be told.

Each car, from the commanding Cullinan to the ethereal Phantom, is displayed like a masterpiece in a gallery – individually framed and presented with the reverence it deserves. The space itself is a living expression of the brand’s philosophy: unapologetically luxurious, effortlessly elegant, and endlessly inspiring.

In Manchester, the spirit of Rolls and Royce lives on – not just in memory, but in motion.

In a significant moment for the future of British luxury manufacturing, Chris Brownridge, Chief Executive of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, signed the first steel column of the marque’s new building extension at its Goodwood headquarters—officially signalling the start of above-ground construction on the £300 million project.

The signed column is the first of 437 that will form the internal structural framework of the new 40,000-square-metre (430,500 sq ft) facility, the largest single investment in the Home of Rolls-Royce since the plant opened its doors in 2003. When completed, the extension will house state-of-the-art equipment and bespoke production areas designed to meet growing global demand for the brand’s ultra-personalised models and next-generation battery-electric vehicles.

A Symbolic Start to a Landmark Development

“Today’s signing ceremony is an important symbolic moment for this landmark project,” said Brownridge. “We wanted to formally mark the start of construction on the main building, which is so central to our future, and to the enormous economic contribution Rolls-Royce Motor Cars makes to the local, regional and national economies.”

The ceremony echoes a long-standing tradition at Rolls-Royce: critical parts such as doors and chassis components have historically been signed off by hand with a chinagraph pencil—a ritual dating back to Sir Henry Royce himself, who personally approved every design produced under his direction.

Precision Engineering Meets Environmental Stewardship

Each of the towering steel columns—typically standing 12 to 13 metres high—is being craned into place with the same attention to detail that defines the marque’s motor cars. Once secured to pre-cast concrete foundation pads, the steelwork will gradually rise across the site, beginning from the northern elevation and advancing southwards under the direction of Rolls-Royce’s technical construction and engineering partners.

The structure will be clad in sustainable materials, carefully chosen for durability, environmental performance, and aesthetic harmony with the surrounding South Downs landscape. Like the existing manufacturing facility, the new building will feature a living roof to support local biodiversity and will generate renewable energy via air-source heat pumps and a bio-solar roof.

Engineered for the Future

Designed to future-proof the company’s operations, the new facility will include a cutting-edge Exterior Surface Finish Centre (paint shop), alongside dedicated spaces for the marque’s acclaimed Bespoke and Coachbuild commissions. It will also support the production of Rolls-Royce’s expanding portfolio of battery-electric motor cars, aligning with the company’s long-term commitment to innovation and sustainability.

The extension is more than a physical expansion—it represents a bold statement of intent. At £300 million, it underscores the brand’s enduring investment in British craftsmanship and its role as a major contributor to the UK economy, which Rolls-Royce supports to the tune of over £500 million each year.

Building Tomorrow’s Legacy

As construction progresses, the newly erected columns will serve as a metaphorical and literal framework for the brand’s next chapter. The new facility is expected to be structurally complete within nine months, after which fit-out and equipment installation will begin.

Meanwhile, the Construction Hub—temporary offices onsite—continues to coordinate the project, housing the Site Strategy team and independent contractors responsible for delivering this landmark initiative.

In signing the first column, Chris Brownridge not only commemorated the start of a bold new era for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars but reaffirmed the marque’s commitment to excellence, heritage, and the sustainable evolution of luxury motoring.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has reaffirmed its commitment to fostering the next generation of talent in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) through a series of specially designed workshops at Davison CE High School for Girls. Delivered by Rolls-Royce Apprentices and Interns, these interactive sessions showcased the real-world applications of mathematics in luxury manufacturing, aiming to inspire young women to pursue careers in STEAM fields.

Bringing Mathematics to Life

Developed in collaboration with Mathematics Education Innovation (MEI), a charity dedicated to improving maths education, the workshops were carefully tailored to align with the school curriculum while demonstrating the crucial role of mathematics in the production of Rolls-Royce’s world-renowned luxury vehicles. By making these lessons relevant to real-world industry practices, the initiative sought to bridge the gap between classroom learning and professional application.

Exemplifying the value of apprenticeship pathways, the workshops were led by former Davison student and current Rolls-Royce apprentice Fleur Macmillan. She was joined by Jess Burcombe, an intern and undergraduate from the University of Chichester, who provided invaluable insights into navigating a career in STEAM. Fleur’s personal journey from student to apprentice served as an inspiration to attendees, demonstrating the possibilities available to those pursuing careers in this dynamic sector.

“Encouraging more young women to enter STEAM careers is so important,” said Fleur. “When I was sitting in those same classrooms only a few years ago, I never would have believed this was possible for me. There are so many ways to grow within Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, and I am so pleased that I made the decision to choose a career with so much opportunity.”

Strengthening Community and Industry Links

Davison CE High School for Girls, the only state school on the Sussex Coast dedicated exclusively to girls’ education, is known for its proactive approach to industry engagement. Headteacher Chris Keating expressed gratitude for the collaboration, emphasising the importance of equipping students with the skills and knowledge necessary for success in the workplace.

“Being at the heart of our local community is really important to the students and staff of Davison CE High School for Girls,” Keating said. “We want our students to make a positive contribution and to see that they can be a genuine ‘force for good.’ We feel really fortunate to have such a strong relationship with local employers such as Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, and we work together to ensure that our students understand what it takes to succeed in the world of work and what wonderfully diverse career options are out there for them.”

A Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

These workshops are part of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars’ wider Future Talent Programme, which includes Graduate, Apprenticeship, and Internship opportunities aimed at increasing diversity and inclusion within the company. By offering young people hands-on experience and industry insights, the company continues to foster a more inclusive talent pipeline, ensuring that individuals from diverse backgrounds have the opportunity to thrive in the luxury automotive sector.

Mark Adams, Director of Human Resources at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, underscored the significance of these initiatives in broadening access to STEAM careers. “By showing how important maths is within luxury manufacturing, we hope to inspire students to consider a future in the industry. In recent years, we have seen a welcome increase in female applicants for our Future Talent Programme, and activities like this are key to sustaining that progress.”

Apprenticeship Opportunities Now Open

The application window for the 2025 Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Apprenticeship programme is now open until 31 March 2025. Designed for individuals with a broad range of interests, skills, and educational backgrounds, the programme offers apprenticeships from NVQ Level 2 (equivalent to GCSE) to Level 6 (equivalent to an undergraduate degree), with most roles commencing in August 2025.

Aspiring apprentices are encouraged to explore the diverse opportunities available and submit their applications via the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars careers portal.

Through initiatives like these, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars continues to lead the way in nurturing future STEAM talent, ensuring that the luxury automotive industry remains innovative, inclusive, and forward-thinking for generations to come.

As Rolls-Royce continues to pave its path towards a future rich in heritage, innovation, and craftsmanship, it has chosen an extraordinary way to mark its largest single investment in more than two decades: a time capsule. The capsule, which is set to be sealed with great ceremony by members of the marque’s Future Talent programme, will remain closed until 2054 — coinciding with Rolls-Royce’s monumental 150th anniversary.

A Snapshot of Today, A Glimpse of Tomorrow

Unlike the traditional practice of burying time capsules, Rolls-Royce has chosen to display its creation as an artefact of living history. Upon completion of the extension to the company’s Goodwood-based facilities, the capsule will take pride of place in the reception area. It will become a point of curiosity for visitors and staff alike, offering a snapshot of the marque’s identity at a pivotal moment in its story.

The contents of the time capsule have been meticulously selected by members of Rolls-Royce’s Future Talent programme — a group encompassing interns, apprentices, and graduates. This collective effort stands as a testament to the brand’s commitment to cultivating talent, ensuring that its legacy endures through the hands of those who will carry the torch into the future. As Mark Adams, Director of Human Resources at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, so aptly put it, “With this time capsule, we’re creating our own piece of history to hand on to our successors here at Goodwood.”

A Tapestry of Heritage and Innovation

The collection of objects, representing a cross-section of Rolls-Royce’s modern business, reflects a balance between the past, present, and future. Some items were chosen with the certainty that, by 2054, they will be obsolete — relics of an age gone by, evoking a sense of nostalgia for those fortunate enough to view them. Others have been included precisely because they are likely to remain vital to Rolls-Royce’s work, underscoring the continuity of the marque’s craftsmanship, excellence, and attention to detail.

The carefully curated selection speaks to Rolls-Royce’s unbroken line of innovation, artistry, and dedication to perfection. The objects serve not only as a historical record but also as a celebration of the timeless qualities that define the brand. They are not mere items; they are symbols of Rolls-Royce’s enduring commitment to luxury, engineering, and craftsmanship.

A Glimpse into the Future

The time capsule’s contents are to remain a closely guarded secret, with no official word on what items will be included. This element of mystery adds to the intrigue, sparking the imagination of those who will one day open it. Just as the ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’ installed in Rolls-Royce Private Offices around the world inspires bespoke commissions and the creative minds that drive them, so too will the time capsule serve as a conversation starter, igniting curiosity and speculation about what the future holds.

As Rolls-Royce looks ahead, the company is confident that many of those who helped bring this project to life will be present when the capsule is finally opened — 30 years from now. Given the marque’s long-standing history of celebrating long-serving colleagues through its Service Recognition Awards, it seems fitting that some of those who contributed to the capsule will still be part of the Rolls-Royce family when the 150th anniversary celebrations take place.

An Enduring Legacy

Ultimately, this time capsule serves more than just as a repository for objects; it encapsulates the essence of Rolls-Royce’s enduring legacy. It is a reflection of the brand’s unwavering dedication to its craft, the passion of its people, and the future it envisions for itself. In sealing the capsule today, Rolls-Royce ensures that its legacy will not only live on in the products it creates but also in the memories and aspirations of those who will carry it forward for generations to come.

As we look towards the future, it is impossible to ignore the indelible mark Rolls-Royce has made over the past 150 years. With this time capsule, the marque isn’t just preserving a moment in time — it is celebrating the journey of craftsmanship, luxury, and innovation that has defined Rolls-Royce since its inception.

Eric Platford, born on 25 February 1883 in Manchester, was a man whose contributions to Rolls-Royce were both fundamental and transformative. While figures like Claude Johnson and Ernest Hives are often celebrated in the company’s illustrious history, Platford’s pioneering work in testing, racing, and aero-engine development cements his legacy as one of the most influential figures in the marque’s early success.

A Career Forged in Engineering Excellence

Platford’s engineering journey began at the General Electric Company, but it was his move to Royce Limited in 1900 that set the stage for his lifelong association with Rolls-Royce. His talents were quickly recognised by Henry Royce, who not only entrusted him with engine testing but also personally taught him to drive so he could test the chassis. This role would define Platford’s career, as he became instrumental in refining the performance and reliability of early Rolls-Royce vehicles.

Racing and the Rolls-Royce Reputation

His expertise extended beyond the factory floor. In 1905, Platford participated as a riding mechanic alongside Charles Rolls in the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy race. The following year, he prepared the 6-cylinder 30 H.P. car that secured victory for Claude Johnson in the Scottish Motor Trials. Perhaps his most famous racing feat was his involvement in the 1907 2,000 Mile Trial and Scottish Reliability Trial, both of which showcased the indomitable endurance of Rolls-Royce cars. Platford’s relentless pursuit of excellence culminated in the legendary 15,000-mile endurance run in the Silver Ghost, solidifying Rolls-Royce’s reputation as ‘the best car in the world’.

Promoted to Chief Tester in 1908, Platford took on a crucial role in overseeing the company’s experimental department. His skills were again tested in 1913 when he played a pivotal role in preparing and driving the Rolls-Royce cars that dominated the Alpine Trial, an event that proved the marque’s supremacy in engineering reliability.

Engineering Triumphs in Aviation

During the First World War, Platford’s expertise transitioned from road to sky as he took charge of testing Rolls-Royce’s revolutionary V12 Eagle aero engines. His influence extended to one of the most significant milestones in aviation history—the first transatlantic flight in 1919. Platford personally supervised the installation of Rolls-Royce Eagle engines in the Vickers Vimy aircraft flown by Captain John Alcock and Lieutenant Arthur Whitten Brown. Their successful crossing, fraught with challenges, not only secured Rolls-Royce’s dominance in aviation but also reaffirmed the company’s reputation for engineering excellence.

A Legacy of Trust and Innovation

Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, Platford remained the guardian of Rolls-Royce quality, overseeing testing and production at the company’s Derby facility. His technical acumen and unwavering commitment made him a trusted figure within the organisation, often escorting visiting dignitaries and royalty on tours of the factory. His relationship with Henry Royce was particularly notable, built on mutual respect and a deep professional bond. Royce, who rarely expressed personal sentiments, gifted Platford a signed photograph in 1925—an extraordinary gesture of appreciation.

A Life Dedicated to Rolls-Royce

Eric Platford’s sudden passing on 20 November 1938, at the age of 55, marked the end of a remarkable career. His obituary in The Spanner, the Rolls-Royce company magazine, paid tribute to his technical brilliance, unwavering dedication, and the respect he commanded from colleagues. His contributions to both automotive and aviation engineering continue to resonate, ensuring that his name remains etched in Rolls-Royce history.

As Andrew Ball, Head of Corporate Relations and Heritage at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, aptly summarised: “Eric Platford earned the right to be recognised among his better-known contemporaries. Through his painstaking testing work and landmark successes, no one outside the company’s senior ranks did more to secure its reputation as ‘the best car in the world’.”

The Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph holds a uniquely significant place in the marque’s storied history. As the latest instalment in the Models of the Marque series—a retrospective marking the 120th anniversary of the first meeting between Henry Royce and The Hon. Charles Stewart Rolls—it is a fitting celebration of a car that served as the tangible, technological link between the pre-Goodwood and contemporary Rolls-Royce eras. Designed using computer-aided design (CAD) for the first time in the company’s history and powered by a BMW V12 engine, Silver Seraph is a bridge between tradition and modernity.

A New Dawn: The Genesis of Silver Seraph

The late 1980s saw Rolls-Royce navigating a rapidly evolving luxury automotive landscape. The Silver Spirit, launched in 1980, was enjoying commercial success, but a successor was already in development under the codename SXB. The challenge was formidable: create a car that would appeal to both American customers, who favoured ostentatious displays of wealth, and British clients, who sought refined elegance amidst economic austerity.

By 1989, CAD technology became available, revolutionising the design process. Despite initial plans for a smaller vehicle than its predecessors, the imperative to retain the brand’s hallmark comfort, interior space, and commanding presence led to extensive refinements. The final design paid homage to the Silver Cloud, incorporating yacht-inspired aesthetics, with a prominent prow-like radiator and sweeping curves that exuded timeless sophistication.

Engineering Excellence Amidst Corporate Turmoil

The Silver Seraph’s development coincided with a tumultuous period for Rolls-Royce. Initially halted for financial reasons in 1992, the project was revived in 1994 under the designation P600, later renamed P3000. A significant turning point came with the decision to adopt a BMW 5.4-litre V12 engine—a historic departure from the traditional Rolls-Royce V8 and a harbinger of BMW’s eventual acquisition of the marque.

The meticulous engineering and design process culminated in the Silver Seraph’s unveiling in January 1998 at Scotland’s Ackergill Tower Castle. Rolls-Royce encapsulated its essence with the words: “Solidness without heaviness. Authority without arrogance. Elegance without effort. Presence without pomp.” To illustrate the car’s aesthetic lineage, journalists were even presented with a limited-edition print of Chief Designer Graham Hull’s Yacht Aesthetics rendering.

A Short-Lived Yet Pivotal Legacy

Despite its technological advancements and refined aesthetics, the Silver Seraph’s production run was notably brief, ending in 2002 with the long-wheelbase Park Ward variant introduced in 2000. However, its role in Rolls-Royce’s evolution is immeasurable. The adoption of BMW powertrains and engineering expertise not only influenced the Silver Seraph’s exceptional refinement but also solidified BMW’s interest in acquiring Rolls-Royce.

Although it diverged from the later philosophy of grandeur embodied by Goodwood-era Rolls-Royces, the Silver Seraph was the right design for its time. Its understated elegance and harmonious proportions remain as captivating today as they were upon its debut. As a symbol of transition, the Silver Seraph will always stand as the car that gracefully carried Rolls-Royce from the past into the future.

The Rolls-Royce Phantom VI stands as a monument to a bygone era, a final flourish of traditional coachbuilding before modern manufacturing techniques transformed luxury motoring. Produced between 1968 and 1993, it was the last Rolls-Royce to be built on a rolling chassis—a practice that had been the foundation of the marque since its inception in 1904. The Phantom VI’s significance is underscored by its enduring presence within the British Royal fleet, a testament to its timeless elegance and impeccable craftsmanship.

A Legacy of Coachbuilding Excellence

From its earliest days, Rolls-Royce supplied rolling chassis to independent coachbuilders, who would then craft bespoke bodies tailored to the tastes of the marque’s distinguished clientele. This tradition endured even as monocoque construction became the industry standard in the 1960s. The Phantom VI, however, represented the last of its kind, with all examples featuring coachwork exclusively by H. J. Mulliner Park Ward, Rolls-Royce’s in-house coachbuilding division following the consolidation of H. J. Mulliner and Park Ward in 1961.

Born out of continual refinement, the Phantom VI evolved from its predecessor, the Phantom V. Despite maintaining a classic, stately design, it incorporated numerous mechanical advancements, including a 6.75-litre V8 engine and a more modern three-speed automatic transmission. Its braking system, adapted from the Silver Shadow, featured high-pressure hydraulics and improved heat dissipation for superior stopping power.

A Regal Presence

While Phantom VI clients included heads of state and business magnates, its most famous patrons were the British Royal Family. HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother favored the Landaulette variant, with a retractable rear section allowing for greater visibility during public engagements. Meanwhile, HM Queen Elizabeth II owned two Phantom VIs, including one with a raised roof and a Perspex rear cupola—details that ensured both elegance and practicality. Both of these regal motor cars remain in service today, reflecting the model’s unparalleled durability and timeless appeal.

A Fortress on Wheels

Beyond luxury and refinement, the Phantom VI also offered security enhancements for those who required additional protection. The ‘Special Limousines,’ codenamed ‘Alpha,’ were among the most exclusive commissions. While outwardly resembling standard Phantom VIs, they were fitted with bulletproof glass and armor plating, ensuring the utmost safety for their occupants. Interestingly, while these modifications rendered the rear compartment impervious to external threats, the chauffeur’s section remained unprotected—perhaps a relic of a more cavalier age.

The End of an Era

Despite its grandeur, the Phantom VI was already an anachronism by the 1980s. Coachbuilding was becoming increasingly difficult as mass production took hold, and sourcing components from the Silver Cloud era proved a growing challenge. By the early 1990s, the curtain was drawn on Phantom VI production, with the final example—a striking black-over-red Landaulette—delivered in 1993. Initially intended for Rolls-Royce’s own collection, economic pressures ultimately led to its sale.

With just 374 units built over a span of 23 years, the Phantom VI remains one of the rarest and most distinguished Rolls-Royces ever produced. It was the last word in handcrafted automotive excellence, embodying the peak of the coachbuilder’s art before its long dormancy. More than two decades later, Rolls-Royce revived this tradition with the unveiling of the one-off ‘Sweptail’ in 2017, followed by the formation of the Coachbuild division, which has since introduced masterpieces like the Boat Tail and Droptail.

A Lasting Influence

As Rolls-Royce marks its 120th anniversary, the Phantom VI serves as a crucial chapter in the marque’s history—both as the swansong of its original coachbuilding era and as a beacon for the future. It stands as a reminder that, while the automotive world may change, the Rolls-Royce commitment to artistry, craftsmanship, and timeless luxury endures.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is proud to announce that its House Charity for 2025 is Dementia Support at Sage House. Located in Tangmere, West Sussex, just minutes from the Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood, Sage House provides essential support, guidance, and care services for individuals living with dementia and their families.

A Legacy of Giving Back

Since the Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood opened in 2003, the company has upheld a strong tradition of corporate social responsibility. Each year, Rolls-Royce staff nominate and vote for a House Charity, ensuring that their philanthropic efforts are directed towards causes that resonate deeply within the workforce and local community.

Andrew Ball, Head of Corporate Relations and Heritage at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, stated:

“Choosing a new House Charity is an annual tradition we’ve proudly upheld ever since the Home of Rolls-Royce first opened in 2003. It’s an entirely staff-led endeavour, in which our team generously give their time, energy and money to support a local good cause they’ve nominated and voted for and is truly close to their hearts. We’re committed to being a good corporate neighbour, and the House Charity is a tangible, positive way for us to play our part in the local community, over and above our economic contribution. We look forward to supporting Sage House during 2025.”

Sage House: A Beacon of Support for Dementia Care

Dementia Support at Sage House was founded in 2014 by a group of local individuals who had personally experienced the challenges of dementia within their families. Working closely with the NHS, West Sussex County Council, and other voluntary organisations, Sage House has grown into a vital community resource, offering a comprehensive range of dementia support services under one roof.

Since opening its dedicated facility in 2018, Sage House has positively impacted thousands of lives across West Sussex. In the past year alone, the charity has:

Provided support and guidance to over 3,000 individuals and families.

Delivered more than 3,600 respite sessions for carers.

Hosted around 600 activities promoting physical and mental wellbeing.

An independent study by the University of Chichester highlighted the significant benefits of accessing Sage House’s services. People living with dementia who receive support from Sage House report a better quality of life, improved emotional wellbeing, and greater life satisfaction. Additionally, by consolidating these crucial services into one location, Sage House has contributed to substantial cost savings within the health and social care sector—over £1,700 per person each year.

Sally Tabbner, CEO of Dementia Support, expressed her gratitude for the partnership:

“We are absolutely thrilled and deeply honoured that Sage House has been nominated as House Charity of the Year by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. This recognition is a testament to the vital work we do in supporting individuals and families affected by dementia. The partnership with Rolls-Royce will make a tremendous difference, helping us to expand our services, reach more people in need, and continue to innovate in dementia care. We are incredibly grateful for their support and excited about the impact we can achieve together in the year ahead.”

A Commitment to Community

The selection of Sage House continues Rolls-Royce’s long-standing tradition of supporting impactful local charities. Throughout 2025, Rolls-Royce employees will participate in various fundraising activities to contribute to Sage House’s mission, building upon the company’s history of significant charitable contributions.

In 2024, Rolls-Royce staff raised funds for Aldingbourne Trust, an organisation that supports individuals with autism, autism spectrum disorders, Down Syndrome, and physical disabilities. Through its initiatives at the Aldingbourne Country Centre near Goodwood, the Trust offers training, social enterprises, and community activities that enrich the lives of over 1,500 individuals.

As Rolls-Royce Motor Cars embarks on this new philanthropic partnership with Sage House, the company reaffirms its commitment to being a responsible corporate neighbour—one that uplifts and supports its community with the same dedication and excellence that defines its world-renowned motor cars.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, known for its commitment to craftsmanship and excellence, has extended its attention to detail into the natural world. In a unique conservation effort, the marque’s apprentices have designed and handcrafted bespoke wooden nest boxes to aid in the preservation of one of Britain’s most endangered mammals: the hazel dormouse (Muscardinus avellanarius). This initiative forms part of the company’s long-term environmental partnership with the adjacent Goodwood Estate, underscoring their dedication to protecting native wildlife.

Supporting Britain’s Endangered Wildlife

The hazel dormouse, a tiny and nocturnal arboreal mammal, is emblematic of Britain’s dwindling biodiversity. With a body measuring just 6-9 cm and weighing no more than a pencil, the dormouse has suffered a dramatic decline in population due to habitat loss and fragmentation. Once widespread across the UK, its numbers plummeted by 52% between 2009 and 2018, leading to its designation as a protected species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

Rolls-Royce’s apprentices have stepped in to address this decline by creating carefully crafted nest boxes designed to provide safe and secure habitats for the elusive creatures. The initiative is part of an ongoing project to monitor and conserve dormice in a new woodland area within the Goodwood Estate, which features ideal conditions such as dense undergrowth and climbing plants like honeysuckle and ivy.

Craftsmanship Meets Conservation

True to Rolls-Royce’s ethos of precision and artistry, the apprentices approached the project with the same meticulous care they apply to creating the world’s most luxurious motor cars. After researching dormouse behavior and consulting wildlife trusts, they developed a design that balances functionality and elegance.

The nest boxes were crafted from quarter-sawn oak, chosen for its natural durability and striking grain patterns, which highlight the shimmering medullary rays unique to this timber. This choice of material not only ensures longevity but also reflects Rolls-Royce’s dedication to quality. The boxes were further protected with roofing felt to withstand the elements and ensure the dormice have a secure refuge for years to come.

Hands-On Learning and Environmental Stewardship

The apprentices’ involvement extended beyond design and construction. During a visit to the Goodwood Estate, they worked alongside the estate’s forestry team to learn about dormouse habitats and understand how to integrate the nest boxes into the ecosystem effectively.

The new boxes have been strategically installed in a woodland area featuring hazel and other broadleaf species, with the hope that these charming creatures will soon take up residence. Monitoring these boxes will enable conservationists to confirm the dormice’s presence, assess potential threats, and implement habitat improvements to support their survival.

A Broader Commitment to Biodiversity

Rolls-Royce’s contribution to dormouse conservation is part of a broader environmental strategy. The company’s 42-acre site and the adjoining Goodwood Estate host a wealth of Britain’s rare mammals, birds, reptiles, insects, and plants. Through this long-term partnership, the marque demonstrates its commitment to preserving the rich biodiversity of the region.

Andrew Ball, Head of Corporate Relations and Heritage at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, remarked:

“Studies have shown that our 42-acre site and the adjoining Goodwood Estate are home to some of Britain’s most important mammals, reptiles, birds, insects, and plants – all of which we’re helping to conserve through our long-term environmental partnership. In this latest initiative, we’re working together to measure and monitor the local population of another rare and protected species, the hazel dormouse, using nest boxes designed and handmade by our Apprentices. The nest boxes are located in prime dormouse habitats and we’re very hopeful that these delightful but highly endangered creatures will soon take up residence in the palatial new accommodation we’ve provided!”

A Legacy of Craft and Care

This innovative collaboration between Rolls-Royce Motor Cars and the Goodwood Estate not only highlights the marque’s environmental responsibility but also provides a unique learning opportunity for its apprentices. By applying their skills to support a vulnerable species, the apprentices are contributing to a project that embodies the same values of excellence, innovation, and sustainability that define Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.

As these carefully crafted nest boxes await their first occupants, the initiative serves as a reminder that craftsmanship can transcend luxury and create meaningful contributions to the natural world. Through projects like these, Rolls-Royce continues to set the standard—not just in automotive excellence, but in environmental stewardship.
