From 1 to 4 May 2025, the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) will transform into a haven for gamers, pop culture aficionados, and tech lovers, as TSAM revs up the excitement with the return of The Toyota Gaming Engine (TTGE) — a dedicated fan-focused experience designed to engage, entertain, and elevate.

“Our continued partnership with Comic Con Cape Town represents our commitment to supporting platforms that inspire creativity, celebrate diversity, and engage the youth through innovation and technology,” said Glenn Crompton, Vice President of Marketing at TSAM. “We are excited to once again connect with fans, gamers, and pop culture enthusiasts in an environment that encourages fun, competition, and memorable experiences.”

Brawlhalla

Gran Turismo 7 (Sim Racing)

Subway Surfers

Each day will bring fresh leaderboards and new chances to win. Top scorers in each title will walk away with a R1,000 Takealot voucher, while winners of mini-tournaments hosted on the TTGE stage will earn R3,000 in Takealot vouchers.

Under the cloudless autumn skies of Gauteng, Round 2 of the 2025 TOYOTA GAZOO Racing South Africa GR Cup roared into the iconic Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, delivering another adrenaline-charged weekend of motorsport theatre. With three classes—GR Cup Media Challenge, GR Cup Dealer Challenge, and the GR86 Development Academy—vying for glory, the stakes were high, the margins razor-thin, and the racing uncompromising.

Media Masterclass: Nabil Abdool Dominates in the GR Yaris

If Round 1 hinted at supremacy, Round 2 confirmed it—Nabil Abdool (SuperSport) was in a league of his own in the GR Cup Media Challenge. From the moment the lights went out on Saturday’s qualifying session, Abdool stamped his authority with a searing lap of 2:07.632, well clear of second-placed Kyle Kock (CAR Magazine).

Race 1 unfolded in predictable yet impressive fashion as Abdool converted pole into a commanding win, recording the fastest lap in the process. Kock and Phuti Mpanye (TimesLive) staged a thrilling battle for second, with Mpanye narrowly missing out. Behind them, Lawrence Minnie (AutoTrader) and Charl Bosch (Citizen) traded positions throughout the midfield, while Willem van de Putte (Independent Media/IOL) kept it tidy to round out the field.

Race 2 was a mirror image of the first, with Abdool once again leading from lights to flag. His fastest lap of 2:07.604 underscored just how dialled-in he was across both heats. With Kock and Mpanye locking out the remaining podium positions, Abdool’s double victory cements his status as the man to beat this season.

Dealer Duel: De Sousa Delivers a GR Corolla Clinic

In the GR Cup Dealer Challenge, the story was one of relentless pace and precision from Mario de Sousa (Motus). Clocking a best qualifying lap of 2:08.369, de Sousa held the front row with confidence and composure. His dominance wasn’t limited to one-lap pace either—when the lights went out, he transformed pole into back-to-back wins with clinical consistency.

Race 1 saw de Sousa glide to victory, fending off a spirited drive from Paul de Vos (GR Driving Academy), who registered his best performance yet in the series. Theo Brits (NMI Menlyn/Centurion) battled his way to a solid third, keeping a charging pack of experienced dealers at bay.

But it was Race 2 where de Sousa truly turned heads. Not only did he outpace his GR Corolla rivals, he crossed the line ahead of the entire field—media and GR86 classes included. His best lap of 2:07.510 was one of the fastest of the weekend. De Vos and Brits completed the podium once more, wrapping up a fiercely competitive but sportsmanlike battle among the dealer contingent.

Rising Stars Shine in the GR86 Development Academy

The GR86 Development Academy continues to be a proving ground for future stars of South African motorsport—and Round 2 delivered some of the closest racing yet. Kent Swartz topped qualifying by the slimmest of margins, a mere tenth of a second ahead of Jason Coetzee and Khanya Ngwenya.

Race 1 was an instant classic. Swartz, Ngwenya, and Coetzee crossed the line within half a second of each other, with Swartz taking the win by just three-tenths. Their on-track respect and razor-sharp competitiveness left spectators on the edge of their seats. The rest of the field wasn’t far behind, with Justin Rogers, Brandon van der Walt, and Jordan Moodley all delivering strong performances. Vatiswa Mokhonoana, one of the GR Academy’s breakthrough talents, brought her car home safely with another valuable finish under her belt.

Race 2 saw Coetzee hit back with a faultless drive to edge out Ngwenya by just 0.12 seconds, taking his first win of the season. Van der Walt showed his class to claim the final podium spot, while Swartz, Rogers, Moodley, and Mokhonoana continued their development with strong pace and consistency.

Looking Ahead

With Round 2 now in the books, the 2025 TOYOTA GAZOO Racing South Africa GR Cup is heating up across all classes. From seasoned media veterans to emerging young talent and fiercely competitive dealer teams, the field is more exciting and diverse than ever. As the season continues, all eyes will be on who can break through the pack—or maintain their lead—as the pressure mounts and the lap times tumble.

Next stop? Even more action, more stories, and more unforgettable moments in South Africa’s most exciting one-make series.

The TOYOTA GAZOO Racing SA Junior Academy (TGRJA) launched their 2025 South African Rotax MAX Challenge campaign in spectacular fashion at Killarney Kart Circuit from 20 to 22 March. Battling unpredictable weather conditions ranging from high humidity to light drizzle, the team’s drivers faced a demanding opening round that tested their skill, adaptability, and resilience.

Coetzee’s Commanding Performance in DD2

Cape Town’s Jason Coetzee made full use of his local knowledge to dominate the premier gearbox DD2 class. Against a fiercely competitive field, including former national champions, Coetzee showcased his experience with two race victories and a second-place finish, securing an overall round win. His stellar performance not only earned him a substantial haul of championship points but also placed him at the top of the early-season leaderboard.

Senior MAX: Grit and Determination from Lenaerts and Swartz

With a highly competitive 23-kart grid, the Senior MAX class provided a weekend of intense battles for TGRJA’s Kent Swartz and Georgia Lenaerts. Lenaerts started strong, securing two top-ten finishes, but an unfortunate nose-cone infringement (NCIP) penalty in Heat 3 relegated her to 16th place. Swartz’s weekend was equally challenging, as an NCIP in Heat 1 and struggles in damp Heat 2 conditions impacted his momentum. His campaign ended in disappointment with a retirement in the final race, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the competition.

Dowling Celebrates Maiden Junior MAX Victory

Emma-Rose Dowling delivered one of the standout performances of the weekend, claiming her first-ever Junior MAX heat victory before securing two additional podium finishes. Her remarkable consistency saw her clinch the overall round win, sending her back north as the early championship leader. Meanwhile, Tshepang Shisinwana demonstrated strong pace but endured a frustrating weekend, with each of his podium-contending drives ending in incidents, resulting in three NCIPs.

Mini MAX: Kaiyamo Twins Gain Valuable Experience

Making their national Mini MAX debut, Namibian brothers Nande and Mandume Kaiyamo faced a steep learning curve in a field of 25 determined competitors. Nande impressed with a 12th-place finish in the opening heat, improved to 7th in Heat 2, but was forced to retire from the final race. Mandume’s weekend proved even more challenging; he was disqualified from Heat 1 for being underweight and retired from Heat 2 before recovering to finish 13th in the final heat. Despite the setbacks, both drivers gained crucial experience that will benefit their progression in the series.

Team Principal Leeroy Poulter Praises Team Resilience

Reflecting on the weekend, TGRJA Team Principal Leeroy Poulter commended the drivers for their determination:

“I couldn’t be prouder of our drivers this weekend. They faced some of the most challenging conditions we’ve seen, and their resilience was incredible. Emma-Rose’s first win was a huge highlight, and Jason’s dominance in DD2 shows how well-prepared he was. We’ll take the lessons from this round, put in the work, and come back stronger for the next round in Vereeniging.”

TGRJA’s Commitment to Developing South Africa’s Motorsport Future

Now in its fourth season, the Toyota Gazoo Racing Junior Academy has firmly established itself as a premier driver development program in South Africa. By providing young talent with access to top-tier competition and expert guidance, the academy continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of motorsport stars. As the 2025 season progresses, TGRJA remains committed to fostering excellence and preparing its drivers for future success in national and international motorsport arenas.

With the next round set to take place in Vereeniging, all eyes will be on the TGRJA drivers as they look to build on their strong start and push for further success in the South African Rotax MAX Challenge.

The 2025 Toyota Fortuner Challenge has concluded in thrilling fashion, showcasing the grit and determination of South Africa’s most daring individuals. Held in the breathtaking Overberg region, the event saw 27-year-old software engineer and part-time CrossFit coach, Hennie Terreblanche, and his partner, sporting hero Saood Variawa, emerge as the ultimate victors in this year’s competition. Their unwavering resilience, strategic collaboration, and extraordinary endurance earned them the prestigious prize—a brand-new Toyota Fortuner GR-Sport.

An Annual Test of Strength and Strategy

Presented by Quartz engine oil, the Toyota Fortuner Challenge is an eagerly awaited event hosted by Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM). Now an annual tradition, it pairs ordinary South Africans with iconic sporting heroes, challenging them to compete in a series of intense physical and mental tests for the coveted Toyota Fortuner GR-Sport.

This year’s competition was no exception, bringing together South African sporting legends such as showjumping champion Nicole Horwood, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing South Africa driver Saood Variawa, Toyota Cheetahs captain Victor Sekekete, and Kaizer Chiefs legend Willard Katsande. They were joined by their everyday challengers, representing leading media outlets such as IOL, SuperSport, Arena Holdings, and Media24/Netwerk24.

Set over two action-packed days, the Toyota Fortuner Challenge offered an exciting array of grueling challenges that tested both body and mind. From beach runs and sandcastle building to sea rescues and obstacle courses, the tasks pushed competitors to their absolute limits. These events, however, were not just about individual strength—they were a celebration of teamwork, with each challenge linked to one of the event’s sponsors, making them as diverse as they were demanding.

In this year’s edition, each sporting hero brought their own expertise to the table.
The 2025 South African national circuit racing season roared into action with the first round of the Extreme Festival at the iconic Killarney International Raceway on 7 and 8 March. As the opening round of the GR Cup, which features the GR Cup Media Challenge, GR Cup Dealer Challenge, and the GR86 Development Academy, it set the stage for an electrifying season ahead.

GR Cup Media Challenge: Abdool Makes a Statement

The GR Cup Media Challenge once again pitted six of South Africa’s top motoring journalists against each other, each piloting the feisty GR Yaris. In an unexpected turn, SuperSport’s Nabil Abdool, despite limited real-world racing experience, stamped his authority on the competition with a commanding performance.

Abdool signaled his intent early, setting the fastest qualifying lap of 1:25.146—not just the quickest in the Media Challenge, but the best time across the entire GR Cup field. He converted his pole position into a dominant lights-to-flag victory in Race 1, followed closely by Kyle Kock (CAR Magazine) and Phuti Mpyane (TimesLive).

Race 2 saw a near-identical outcome, with Abdool once again proving untouchable. Kock held onto second place, while Mpyane rounded off the podium. The results cement Abdool as the early favourite in the championship, though Kock’s improving form suggests a battle may be brewing as the season unfolds.

GR Cup Dealer Challenge: Scott Takes Control

The GR Cup Dealer Challenge saw experienced instructor Devon Scott continue his winning ways from 2024. Piloting his GR Corolla with precision, Scott secured pole position and then dominated both races of the weekend. He was closely pursued by Motus Toyota’s Mario de Sousa, who finished second in both heats, while NMI Toyota’s Werner Venter completed the podium in both outings.

Further down the order, Andries de Villiers (Rola Motors), Rudolf Boonzaaier (Waterberg Toyota), and Tiaan Combrink (Halfway Toyota) put in commendable performances, but Scott’s early form suggests he will be the benchmark in the Dealer Challenge this season.

GR 86 Development Academy: Coetzee’s Perfect Weekend

The GR 86 Development Academy saw young talent Jason Coetzee deliver an impeccable performance. Starting from pole position, he led both races from start to finish, showcasing both skill and composure.

Mikel Bezuidenhout secured second place in Race 1, with Khanya Ngwenya finishing third. Race 2 saw Coetzee once again victorious, followed by Bezuidenhout in second, while Kent Swartz claimed third place, underlining the fierce competition in the junior ranks.

SupaStarlet Debut for Van der Merwe

Away from the GR Cup, Dawie van der Merwe made his debut in the SupaStarlet as part of the SupaCup series. Despite initial setup challenges, Van der Merwe improved his lap times with each session, qualifying sixth and finishing in the same position for Race 1.
Johannesburg – The countdown has begun for the 2025 Absa Cape Epic, the world’s most televised and revered mountain bike race. Toyota South Africa is once again stepping up as the official vehicle and route partner, ensuring that riders and fans alike experience the ultimate test of endurance, skill, and adventure. From 16 to 23 March 2025, elite cyclists and dedicated amateurs will push themselves to the limit, navigating some of the most demanding terrain South Africa has to offer.

Johannesburg, South Africa – The next time you stand in front of the meat counter, pondering which cut of lamb to add to your basket, pause for a moment. Behind each piece of meat lies a story – a journey that spans generations, resilience, and a deep connection to the land. Lamb Champs: Die hart en siel van skaapboerdery, a new six-episode documentary series premiering on 16 March at 20:00 on kykNET (DStv channel 144), takes viewers on an unforgettable journey into the world of sheep farming in South Africa.

Hosted by Minki van der Westhuizen, the series follows six passionate sheep farmers from across the country, each with a unique story, yet all united by one common goal: to compete in the prestigious Lamb Champs competition, held in Pretoria in 2024. The competition, organized by Saai (Southern Africa Agri Initiative), has quickly become a significant platform for showcasing the dedication and hard work of family farmers who produce some of the finest lamb in the region.

A Competition Like No Other

The Lamb Champs competition was born out of Saai’s desire to put family farming and the story of lamb on the global stage. In a land where traditions run deep, lamb is more than just a meal; it is an experience, a tradition, and a symbol of family unity. As Francois Rossouw, CEO of Saai, beautifully puts it: “We braai lamb when we have special people around us. It is a meal that means more. It is the scent of memories, of being together, of family. It is that moment when a family gathers around the fire, when friends laugh together while the embers glow. Sheep is not just meat – it is a beacon of tradition.”

In each episode, viewers will get an inside look at the lives of six sheep farmers. Some have worked on family farms for generations, while others are first-generation farmers who have rented land to pursue their dream of sheep farming. Despite their varying backgrounds, the farmers share two key traits: an unwavering pride in their work and an unrelenting passion for the craft of sheep farming.

A Journey of Perseverance and Passion

Lamb Champs: Die hart en siel van skaapboerdery is more than just an agricultural series. It is a powerful narrative about family, heritage, and perseverance. Through intimate interviews, moments of humour, and raw human emotion, the series invites viewers to experience the real story behind the lamb they consume. It’s a chance to see where their food comes from, forging a deeper connection with the producers and the land that sustains them.

The breathtaking cinematography will transport viewers to the heart of rural South Africa, where the land is tough, the challenges are many, but the passion for farming runs deep. The series paints a picture of dedication, where farmers and their families overcome adversity, always finding a way to make things work in the face of hardship. These are the real stories of resilience, showcasing not only the beauty of farming but also the bonds that are created between people, land, and food.

Supporting Family Farmers

The Lamb Champs competition is proudly sponsored by Pick n Pay, with Toyota as an associate sponsor. These partnerships have helped raise the profile of family farmers in South Africa, giving them the platform and recognition they deserve. Francois Rossouw expresses his gratitude for the support: “We are deeply grateful to our partners, headline sponsor Pick n Pay and associate sponsor Toyota, who are helping us build a world where family farmers not only survive but thrive.”

Pick n Pay’s involvement goes beyond just sponsorship – they have created shelf space for the lamb produced by these farmers, directly connecting them to consumers. This collaboration aims to reduce the distance between the farm and the dinner table, ensuring that consumers can better understand the true value of family farming and the hard work that goes into bringing quality lamb to the market.

Tune In to the Heart of South African Farming

Lamb Champs: Die hart en siel van skaapboerdery is not just about sheep farming. It’s about the heart and soul of South Africa – the traditions, the families, and the stories of those who work tirelessly to bring food to our tables. Tune in on 16 March at 20:00 on kykNET (DStv channel 144) to embark on a journey that will change the way you think about lamb forever. The series will also be available on DStv Stream and Catch Up for those who want to revisit the stories of the farmers and their incredible journey.

Whether you’re a seasoned lamb lover or a curious consumer, this documentary series is an invitation to connect with the food you eat in a more meaningful way. Don’t miss this captivating celebration of family, farming, and the timeless tradition of lamb.

Johannesburg – Toyota South Africa has reaffirmed its dominance in the local automotive market, securing an impressive 24.5% share of new vehicle sales in February 2025. According to the latest figures from the Automotive Business Council, NAAMSA, Toyota sold 11,743 units, maintaining its position as the leading automotive brand in the country.

Resilience in a Dynamic Market

Despite contrasting trends in vehicle exports, South Africa’s new car market demonstrated resilience, with 47,978 units sold in February—an increase of 7.3% compared to the same month in 2024. This growth, bolstered by increased liquidity, financing appetite, and positive employment data from Q4 2024, resulted in a robust 16.8% year-on-year surge in passenger car sales. Year-to-date, the market is tracking 18.6% higher than 2024, indicating renewed consumer confidence.

Reflecting on this strong performance, Toyota South Africa’s Senior Vice President for Sales and Marketing, Leon Theron, expressed appreciation for the efforts of the entire Toyota ecosystem: “We are pleased to have maintained pole position within the Passenger, LCV, and MCV segments. Toyota’s industry leadership is reflective of the hard work and commitment of our Toyota family: employees, dealers, suppliers, and customers. We are hopeful that this supportive environment will continue to enable us to provide suitable mobility solutions to our customers.”

Toyota’s Star Performers

At the forefront of Toyota’s success is the Corolla Cross, which was recently crowned Cars.co.za’s Compact Family Car of the Year. The model led Toyota’s passenger car sales with 1,435 units, closely followed by the Starlet (1,279 units) and the Starlet Cross (1,003 units). Another Cars.co.za award winner, the Urban Cruiser, recorded a strong 875-unit tally, while the Vitz demonstrated consistent demand with 551 units sold.

In the luxury SUV segment, the Prado continued to gain traction, recording 375 sales—an increase of 64 units from January. Toyota’s premium division, Lexus, also showed resilience, with the NX posting 32 units, a notable increase from the 20 units sold in January. Additionally, the Lexus ES and RX each contributed 12 units, bringing Lexus’ total sales to 68 units.

Hilux Leads the Charge in the LCV Segment

Toyota’s leadership extended to the light commercial vehicle (LCV) segment, where the Hilux returned as South Africa’s best-selling model with a total of 2,683 units sold. The Hilux Single Cab led the charge with 1,187 units, cementing its status as the go-to choice for light commercial fleet operations. Meanwhile, the Hilux Double Cab recorded 1,120 units, reflecting a 10% year-on-year increase in business fleet sales.

Dominance in MCV, HCV, and EHCV Segments

Within the medium commercial vehicle (MCV) category, Toyota held a commanding 32% segment share. The Quantum Bus (82 units), Coaster (59 units), and Hino 300 (89 units) all contributed to the brand’s continued success in the public and commercial transport sectors. Additionally, in the heavy commercial vehicle (HCV) and extra-heavy commercial vehicle (EHCV) categories, the Hino 500 and 700 models combined for a total of 118 units.

Strengthening Business Fleet Demand

One of the most notable trends in Toyota’s February performance was the strengthening demand for fleet models. Dealer sales to business customers increased from 3,651 in February 2024 to 3,894 in February 2025, marking a 6.7% growth. This uptick underscores the trust and confidence that business customers continue to place in Toyota’s reliable and cost-effective fleet offerings.

Parts Division Performance

Toyota’s parts division also posted strong results, distributing nearly two million parts locally while exporting 345,514 pieces to international markets. This continued efficiency in parts distribution ensures Toyota owners receive the best aftersales service and support.

Looking Ahead

With February’s sales figures demonstrating positive market momentum and Toyota’s unwavering leadership across key segments, the brand is well-positioned to continue its dominance in 2025. As economic conditions stabilize and consumer confidence strengthens, Toyota remains committed to delivering quality, innovation, and reliability to its customers in South Africa and beyond.

The Toyota Land Cruiser 79 has earned legendary status among off-road enthusiasts, overlanders, and hard-working professionals alike. Whether it’s towing a caravan on a weekend getaway, traversing rugged mining terrain, or serving as a dependable workhorse for farmers, the Land Cruiser 79 is built to endure. However, one common challenge owners face is its braking performance—particularly when fully loaded or towing heavy loads.

Recognising this, Ulterio Motiv, renowned for its high-quality six-wheel conversions, has developed a range of significant upgrades for the standard four-wheel Land Cruiser 79. These enhancements not only improve braking efficiency but also legally increase the vehicle’s gross vehicle mass (GVM) to an impressive 4,500 kg, ensuring greater safety and reliability for drivers tackling heavy-duty tasks.

Enhanced Braking Performance for Better Control

Anyone who has driven a fully loaded Land Cruiser 79 knows that bringing this beast to a halt requires serious leg strength. Ulterio Motiv’s brake upgrades reduce pedal effort, ensuring a safer and more comfortable driving experience, especially when carrying heavy loads or towing.

Braided Brake Hoses

Performance vehicles have long benefited from braided brake hoses, and now, off-road vehicles can experience the same advantages. Compared to standard rubber hoses, braided lines offer:

Superior Durability – Resistant to heat and pressure, braided hoses are less likely to rupture or degrade over time.

Reduced Expansion – Minimising the flex and expansion of brake lines under pressure leads to more consistent and immediate braking response.

Enhanced Longevity – With superior construction, these hoses last significantly longer than traditional rubber ones.

Beyond their technical benefits, these hoses also add a rugged, high-performance aesthetic to the Land Cruiser—an extra plus for enthusiasts who take pride in their vehicles.

Hydraulic Brake Booster Upgrade

For those who frequently carry heavy loads, Ulterio Motiv’s hydraulic brake booster is a game-changer. This upgrade significantly increases braking force while reducing the effort required from the driver. By tapping into the vehicle’s power-steering pump, the hydraulic booster generates greater braking pressure with minimal pedal input.

The kit includes a hydraulic actuator and all necessary piping, and the entire installation can be completed within a day, making it a hassle-free yet highly effective upgrade.

Legal GVM Upgrade to 4,500 kg

The Land Cruiser 79 is a favourite among overlanders and outdoor adventurers who rely on it to carry essential gear, food, fluids, and passengers. However, even a fully equipped Land Cruiser can easily exceed its factory-specified GVM of 3,060 – 3,300 kg (depending on the model). Exceeding this limit not only compromises safety but also risks legal consequences.

With Ulterio Motiv’s comprehensive brake upgrade, owners can legally increase their Land Cruiser 79’s GVM to 4,500 kg. This ensures the vehicle remains compliant with regulations while offering greater payload capacity for work or adventure. The package includes all necessary registration processes, relieving owners of bureaucratic hassle. Note: A C1 driver’s licence is required to operate a vehicle with this upgraded GVM.

Flexible Upgrade Options

Ulterio Motiv understands that not every owner requires a full GVM upgrade. Drivers can opt for only the brake performance enhancements without modifying the vehicle’s registration. This allows for a significant improvement in braking confidence and safety without the need for additional licensing.

In one of the most exhilarating editions in recent memory, Elfyn Evans and Takamoto Katsuta carved their names into Rally Sweden history by delivering a sensational one-two finish for the Toyota GAZOO Racing World Rally Team. The FIA World Rally Championship’s sole winter event proved a true test of nerve and skill on snow and ice, with the top five competitors locked in a battle measured in mere seconds.

Evans and his co-driver, Scott Martin, set the pace early on Friday as they opened the road, eventually finding themselves embroiled in a nail-biting five-way tussle for the lead. With gaps between the front-runners shrinking to less than 10 seconds, the stage was set for a dramatic showdown that unfolded over three intense days.

A Battle of Seconds

Saturday’s high-octane stages saw Evans maintain a slender lead, only to face a fierce challenge on Sunday morning. Over the 29.35-kilometre Västervik stage, Katsuta and his co-driver Aaron Johnston surged ahead on the first pass, building a 4.5-second cushion. Yet, in a display of sheer determination and blistering pace, Evans responded on the second pass—recording a stage time 6.7 seconds quicker than any rival—to reclaim the top spot.

Heading into the final Power Stage with only a 3.7-second advantage, Evans defended his lead to clinch victory by an astonishing overall margin of just 3.8 seconds—the narrowest winning gap ever recorded in Rally Sweden.

Historic Milestones and Championship Implications

The win marks Evans’ tenth career WRC triumph and his second victory in Sweden—a milestone achieved exactly five years after his inaugural win at the event with TGR-WRT. The result has propelled Evans to a commanding 61 points in the championship standings, widening his lead over Rallye Monte-Carlo winner Sébastien Ogier.

Toyota’s dominant performance, with two one-two finishes and a maximum haul of 120 points from the first two rounds, has not only bolstered their championship hopes but also elevated them to second on the all-time list of successful manufacturers following their 95th WRC win.

Voices from the Team

Celebrations were tempered by the razor-thin margins that defined the weekend. TGR-WRT Chairman Akio Toyoda reflected on the day’s intensity:

“The top five were within a 25-second gap, and there are three GR Yaris Rally1s among them. The top two are Elfyn and Takamoto, with only a 3-second difference. Congratulations to Elfyn and Scott for winning the rally—they’ve overcome past disappointments in Sweden, and congratulations to Takamoto and Aaron for an outstanding second place.”

Team Principal Jari-Matti Latvala added,

“It’s been an incredibly close Rally Sweden—a nerve-wracking final day watching our drivers battle it out. I’m really proud of both Elfyn and Takamoto. To score maximum points in such a tight contest is remarkable, and it sets the tone perfectly as we look ahead to Safari Rally Kenya.”

Evans himself was effusive in his praise of the effort:

“It’s been an amazing weekend. We led for much of the rally, but the margins were always tight. I’m very happy with the end result and to have won the Power Stage as well. The conditions allowed us to push our limits, and it feels like a dream start to the season.”

Katsuta, despite the narrow loss, remained upbeat:

“It’s been a really nice fight with Elfyn and a thrilling battle throughout. I’m happy to have done a good job for the team and I’m more confident than ever for our next challenges.”

Looking Ahead to Safari Rally Kenya

With the next round of the championship set to take place at the legendary Safari Rally Kenya from March 20-23, the momentum is firmly with Toyota. Known for its grueling conditions and breathtaking landscapes, the Safari Rally promises a stark contrast to the icy battlegrounds of Sweden, presenting a new set of challenges on rough, rocky roads and open plains.

As the championship unfolds, Toyota’s stellar performance in Sweden has not only invigorated the team but also set the stage for an electrifying season ahead. With every second counting, the battle for rally supremacy continues—where precision, perseverance, and passion will light the way forward.
