The T-Mobile G1, iPhone 3G and the Blackberry Storm

I take this mobile tech stuff seriously. I review a lot of gadgets and smartphones certainly play a big role in that coverage. I have voice and data plans on Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile which I pay far too much for but I need them to be able to play with all the phones I get in my hands. Right now in front of me I have what are undoubtedly the hottest smartphones available on all three of those networks. Sitting on the table is the iPhone 3G, the T-Mobile G1 and the Blackberry Storm. You have to agree those are the hottest smartphones in the US right now and I'm in the unusual position to compare the three for your edification. OK, mainly it's because I like to play with them.

How do they compare? That's not really a fair question because at the basest level they are totally different phones that should appeal to different users. What I find the most interesting about this comparison is that all three phones are smartphones that are aimed at the consumer. This is a big change from the not so distant past when smartphones were almost exclusively the domain of the enterprise worker. The phones such as these three have straddled the fence and shown the consumer that the benefits of good smartphones are not restricted to the enterprise.

The iPhone first demonstrated how effective a smartphone can be when it provides a good web surfing solution. It brought email to the hands of many who had not been exposed to it away from the desktop and demonstrated how empowering that could be. It quickly became the standard against which all other consumer smartphones would be measured and still is today. I can attest to the fact that the competitors, especially the two phones I'm covering here, are getting closer to that web experience the iPhone offers. Closer but not quite there yet.

The T-Mobile G1 web experience is getting very close to that of the iPhone. For consumers who have thoroughly embraced the Google way of life with GMail, Google Calendar and Contacts, the G1 actually surpasses the iPhone's web experience. The browser is not quite as good as Mobile Safari on the iPhone but it's darn close and is very satisfying to use. Google has ingrained their app integration so solidly that it's even more comfortable to use than the desktop, and that's the G1's greatest strength. Those wanting to leverage their Google usage will do well with the G1, and with the Android Marketplace getting its sea legs that can only get better.

The Blackberry Storm on the Verizon network is RIM's attempt to bring a consumer browsing machine to the Blackberry addict. I can't stress enough that the strongest feature of the Storm is that it is a Blackberry. Consumers have been discovering the communication-related advantages of the Blackberry for a couple of years now and RIM had left the boardroom prior to the launch of the Storm.

The unusual tactic of removing the much ballyhooed Blackberry keyboard is RIM's move into the larger-screened web appliance space like the G1 and iPhone. The touch screen with the unusual SurePress technology works for me better than the G1's slider keyboard, mainly because it is an ingrained part of the interface on the Storm. RIM made a serious error in omitting WiFi, the only one of these three that doesn't offer that abilility. The G1's lack of any on-screen keyboard makes the sliding one a requirement to run the phone and the inconsistent design of same on the G1 detracts from the experience. This is not the case with the Storm.

So who are these three similar but distinct smartphones aimed at? I suspect that the three carriers who sell them along with Apple, HTC and RIM would say that they are after anyone who will buy one. That's pretty hazy though, I think it's fair to say that all three phones are aimed squarely at the consumer market. The iPhone showed everyone how the "real Internet" looks on a handheld device and the race is on to provide that. All three phones do a pretty good job in this area but the iPhone is still clearly ahead. Most consumers will get a lot of benefit out of any of these phones no question, it comes down to exactly what you are looking for. Heavy messaging requires a Blackberry. Google users will do well with the G1 Android phone. Pretty much anyone can do well with the iPhone, it's an iPod too after all.

T-Mobile G1 Gets Dissected

Many people have had their T-Mobile G1 for a week now and the honeymoon state has yet to wear off. We have been dying to see what is inside of this HTC but far too in love with it to tear it open. Luckily the fearless guys over at TechOn tore it open before they grew attached.

The G1 is made up of several components making it hard to reassemble. One thing that we really did not expect was the different color of the casing. It is actually white on the inside, suggesting that the G1 is coated with a paint or plastic of some kind. What does not make sense to us is the rumors that the white G1 was not sold because of the paint chipping. If the device casing is white, why paint it to begin with?

They have a picture that shows the G1’s antenna and GPS antenna which is made up of two separate pieces. The pictures also show a little glimpse of how the slider is constructed. One thing that TechOn stated was that the roll ball is the same as RIM’s BlackBerry roll ball. One other thing that they discovered is a second rumble pack on the inside. With all these shots of the G1 dissected, has anyone gained the confidence to go home and crack theirs open?

Microsoft: Apple Not Interested in Silverlight, Flash for iPhone

According to Microsoft’s latest Silverlight announcement, Apple shows little to no interest in installing either Silverlight or Adobe Flash on its iPhones.

Thanks to the open source nature of Google’s mobile operating system Android, on the other hand, Silverlight on a Google-enabled phone is a prospective possibility for Microsoft — one they’d be eager to jump on.

“Basically where we’re at right now is we have talked with Apple,” Microsoft Vice President Scott Guthrie admitted. “We are very interested in being able to run [Silverlight] on the iPhone. At the end of the day, Apple ultimately controls what software runs on the iPhone. To date, what they’ve said is that at this time, they’re not looking to enable browser plug-ins like Silverlight or Flash to run on top of it.”

Microsoft’s perspective mirrors Adobe’s. However, according to Guthrie, Apple apparently hasn’t completely slammed the door to third-party vendors yet.

“They might in the future, but right now it isn’t an option for any vendor and so if they let us we’ll definitely come. Until they open it up to third-party plug-ins, like Silverlight and Flash, we’re both prevented from running there.”

The story is radically different for Google’s Android, the increasingly popular mobile operating system. T-Mobile has already sold out of its 1.5 million G1 phones, the first to run the OS, even prior to its release later this month. Thanks to Android’s open source license, third-party vendors will be welcome to build on top of the operating system and even contribute to the underlying technology. This means third-party applications like Silverlight and Flash will be welcomed on the mobile phone.

“[The] Google phone is slightly different.” Guthrie said. “It’s more of an open platform, that is something we’re going to continue to look at. Certainly as it’s gotten deployed and if sales are good we’ll definitely keep our eyes out and look at that in the future.”

In fact, because the Android mobile browser is based heavily on Google’s Chrome desktop browser, it may be sooner rather than later that we’ll be able to see fully operable Flash applications on a mobile phone. Flash already runs on Chrome, and Silverlight works on the latest developer build.

Android’s Login Is Cool, But Is It Secure?

I’ve been hearing a lot about Google’s innovative login feature for the Android phone, but only saw it today for the first time (Loren Feldman, who recently did some video of one, sent a screenshot).

Unlike other phones, which require a four digit number for unlocking, the Android simply puts nine dots arranged in a square on the touch screen, along with the words “draw pattern to unlock.” My understanding is that any pattern can be used as long as it touches at least four of the dots. Given the many, many different possible patterns (any math majors want to tell me how many?), it seems like a decent way to to lock and unlock a phone.

Except a very low tech side effect of the touch screen may be giving Google pause.

From what we hear, some people using the phone are noticing that the oil from a user’s fingers may leave enough of a smudge that the unlock password can be guessed at some of the time. Particularly since most people start their unlock pattern with the top left dot, and then move right or diagonally right. If you can see the smudge, it’s an easy guess what the unlock code is.

Of course users can always just wipe down the screen whenever they lock the phone. But my guess is Google offers an alternative, and more traditional, way to lock the phone as well.

Apple Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs may unveil an iPhone today that works with faster wireless networks in a bid to lure business users from the BlackBerry and reach more international customers.

Jobs, to speak at Apple's developers conference in San Francisco this morning, probably will announce an updated iPhone that works with so-called third-generation, or 3G, networks, said Gene Munster, a Piper Jaffray analyst.

Higher speed, combined with software due this month that links the iPhone to corporate e-mail systems, may make it a bigger threat to the BlackBerry and help Jobs reach his goal of selling 10 million phones this year. The lack of 3G capability also has limited the iPhone's appeal among overseas users.

Either Apple's getting leakier or the fakers are getting fake...ier, but the latest round of supposed 3G iPhone pictures is upon us courtesy of Dutch site iPhoneclub.nl and our old friend Mr. Blurrycam, and they're pretty convincing. You'll notice that they show a device almost identical to the one in the last set of images we saw, with a white back and three dots inside the earpiece. Of course, that's not to say some aspiring Photoshoppers haven't just been copying each other, but we're not here to kill your dreams, people. You'll just have to trust your friends for that. iPhone: To Buy or Not To Buy?

...That is the question. If you visit Giz with any frequency, you've no doubt read the 3G iPhone will be announced at WWDC. Now I'm stuck deciding whether or not I'm going to buy it when it hits stores. The lack of 3G is what stopped me from buying the first iteration, and with rumors of video conferencing, GPS, and mobile TV, it seems like a no brainer, right?

Well, not so fast. I started using the Blackberry Curve this year and I really fell in love with it. It's not as flashy, but it gets the job done. When the Blackberry Bold was announced and began drawing tangential iPhone comparisons, I entertained the idea of buying that instead. I honestly don't know if I could live without a tactile QWERTY keyboard.

But enough of that. A couple of concerns I have about the iPhone are signal reception and battery life. From what I've seen and heard from friends, iPhone reception in San Francisco is spotty to say the least (Blackberry...never a problem). It makes me feel a little better to see Apple scouting for design engineers (even if that hire isn't for the 2nd gen iPhone), because hopefully it means they've been working to improve it. And the supposed thicker size of the phone has me hoping they threw a bigger battery in to compensate for the rumored 3G and GPS. I'm really bad about remembering to charge my gadgets, making me gravitate towards phones I only need to plug in once or twice a week. That may not be realistic for the iPhone, but so long as it's not on its last legs at the end of every day, I'll be satisfied.

So will the new tech specs and open apps be enough to sway me to the Steve side of the cellphone universe? I'll know after June 9th. [iPhone on Giz]

Although it looks like a standard RSS reader this has more - you get to choose from a predefined list of channels plus you can view full text articles and images from regular web pages. The free application, which you control through an online portal, will grab the latest updates from your chosen feeds, channels and websites where-ever you are.

Not a Windows Mobile device, the Android prototype photo Gizmodo just received looks quite similar to a Windows Mobile device (mostly like the HTC S620) which is no wonder since HTC is part of Google's recently announced Open Handset Alliance.
According to Gizmodo's anonymous tipster, the OS (and device) - in its early form - is light and fast, much faster than the desktop emulator at times. And as a longtime programmer, he thinks it's a lot more put together than Window Mobile on the back side of things.

No question, the device above is a prototype for developing purpose only and things will obviously change but if Android wants to gain some market share (in the consumer segment - as HTC mentioned earlier too) it needs some more mass-market compatible hardware.

The HTC Neon was recently unveiled by the FCC, which is most likely a Windows Mobile Professional smartphone with touchscreen and now the Bluetooth SIG (Special Interest Group) lists the HTC Neon too. However unlike the FCC, which approved the Neon 100, the Bluetooth SIG got the Neon 200 for testing - which is a clear indication that at least 2 different designs exists. As always, the Bluetooth SIG isn't unveiling too much about the device features except that it is supporting Bluetooth 2.0+EDR but if you have a closer look on the FCC label, you might notice that the device seems to feature a front facing camera, right from the speaker as the HTC Touch Dual does too.

Thanks to a large number of handsets and base stations designed for use in the American AWS (1700 MHz) band, the frequency will be adopted beyond US borders. 3G Americas, which represents GSM in North and South America, has expressed confidence in the band and points out that a number of countries will auction off spectrum in the same band as early as next year. This announcement follows the ITU's recent adoption of the 700 MHz band for wireless broadband use across the Americas as well as Asia.
