Episode 387 - More New Eras Than A Hat Shop

So the new season is finally here, with the new regulations, new teams, new driver (singular), returning drivers (X2) and new worries about the cars being fast enough, stable enough, capable of lasting for an entire qualifying session (let alone a race) and a whole new order up and down the grid.

Well we got a half decent opening to 2026 at least, overtakes with the new moveable aero (don't call it DRS, even though that's what it looks like) and drivers seemingly having to do hardcore maths while working out batter levels and charging/clipping/superclipping levels.

This week on the podcast we look back at the Australian Grand Prix, where the new order appears to be the last order but 2 with Mercedes taking the top 2 steps on the podium this time out, but was it as clear-cut as the results say? There was a recovering Max thanks to an issue with the car in Q1 that sent him into the barriers, and some questions over Ferrari's strategy call under a VSC (at least some things don't change!)

There's also a look at the other stories circulating round the paddock at the moment, especially concerning the Bahrain & Saudi Arabian Grand Prix and if they're going to happen at all this year, or will the current conflict in the Middle-East leave us without F1 for the entire month of April?

Episode 386 - GP2 Pt2 GP2er

It's the eve of the 2026 season (Seasonmas Eve?) and 10 teams are poised to launch into 2026 with new cars, with new aero and engine regulations, but wait... Who's that clunking round at the back with bits falling off the car at half the speed of everyone else? It's the new Aston Martin Honda powered donkey!

As we all wait in anticipation for the start of the latest new era of F1, good old Honda have done it again, they've managed to create an engine that vibrates itself practically to pieces and has done so, so many times that they've run out of spare parts and it looks like they might only make the first few laps when when the season opens in Melbourne this weekend!

This week on the pod we take a brief look back at the 3 testing sessions that took place in Barcelona and Bahrain where, as usual, we learnt next to nothing over who is going to be quick and reliable, but did learn who isn't!

Bit of a hurridly thrown together show this week, but we've still managed to cram as many tangents in as possible, along with the launch of this season's Prediction League and Official F1 Fantasy League too.

Episode 385 - New Year, Same Us!

Happy New Regulations everyone! Yes it's 2026 and the new F1 rules are coming into force very soon, even if the teams, F1 themselves and even the FIA aren't 100% sure of what they are and how they'll work. What could go wrong? (We'll find out soon, Scarbs will be joining us to explain all that!)

This week on the first podcast of 2026, we take a look back at the major F1 stories that have happened since we last got together a couple of months back. We've seen Friend of the Podcast Lando Norris become World Champion, the end of the Helmut Marko era at RedBull, rumours about the return of Christian Horner to the grid (with Alpine this time) and we wildly speculate about when we'll see the Renault name back in F1 again after they left, not for the first time, this year.

There's a load of tangents as well as we just generally have a catchup as it's the first time all 4 of us have spoken to each other at the same time since before Christmas, so it's a bit of a freeform, all over the place kind of show. But we have got an Is That Glock for a change!

Episode 384 - It's Happening Again Isn't It? (89/90/07)

It was all lined up. The penultimate race weekend of the season at a track that isn't exactly condusive to overtakes. Lando just needed to outscore both his rivals by 2 points over the sprint and the Grand Prix to claim his first World Driver's crown, he was starting ahead of Max Verstappen in both races and he's had the measure of Oscar Piastri recently. It's a sure thing isn't it?

This week on the podcast we look back at the race weekend where Lando Norris could well have lost the championship after McLaren took a gamble on strategy straight out the Ferrari playbook and managed to keep the 3 way title fight alive right up to the final race of the season next weekend in Abu Dhabi (and we all know how that's gone before don't we). How did they manage to get everything so wrong and be the only team not to pit under a safety car with 50 laps to go when there were compulsory stops after a maximum of 25 laps on a set of tyres?

At least for the likes of us we've got another season where the finale isn't a dead rubber/lame duck and we're not going to know who the 2025 World Champion is until Sunday afternoon (unless something goes badly wrong in qualifying of course!) So of course we're speculating like nobody's business on that and on what the 2026 RedBull & VCARB lineups are going to be along with which one of the 5 prosepective drivers is going to be left without a seat (spoiler, it's Yuki) until someone messes up and gets demoted/fired! Obviously we've got a good few tangents as well as it wouldn't be an episode of 3L4W without them!

Episode 383 - A Crash Centipede

As the saying goes; what happens in Vegas, stays In Vegas. And that was true about Lando Norris's 24 point lead over 2nd place in the World Driver's Championship after a double dq for McLaren and an imperious win for (former, but on longer title outsider) Max Verstappen. Could Max actually do it this season, from an over 100 point deficit to taking the title in the last 2 race weekends? If he does manage to pip both papaya clad drivers to the title, this will probably go down in history as just about the greatest championship win ever. So get your popcorn ready, we're at the sharp end!

This week on the podcast we look back at a Las Vegas Grand Prix that had more tha a few shocks. A wet track, an utterly abysmal Ferrari qualifying strategy, even by their own, already low, standards. Lance Stroll ending up as the victim of a move from Bortaletto that could only be described as "Strollesque" And a reault that's keeping the championship a three way scrap for far longer than anyone thought possible at the Summer break.

You might notice that we recorded this on Wednesday this week and thanks to a huge stroke of luck when it comes to F1 news, the Adrian Newey appointment as team principle at Aston Martin from next year was still doing the rounds of shocking and confusing everyone. What is Lawrence Stroll playing at? Is he actually a genius or will this come crashing down like his last few TP appointments did? (We're going to be going through a LOT of popcorn in the future)

Episode 382 - If You No Longer Go For A Gap...

Said the greatest driver ever to come out of Brazil. Sadly a few too many of the current grid took that to heart this weekend and a few teams were left with serious repair jobs, penalties and wasted weekends.

This week on the podcast we look back at the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend where a combination of a drying track, soaking kerbs (hey, we're British OK!) and quite possibly a lack of spatial awareness from some drivers gave us both an entertaining sprint and a Grand Prix that showed us that you cannot count out Max Verstappen when there's even the faintest sniff of a podium

Episode 380 - Painting Outside The Lines

Track limits, leaving the track and gaining an advantage, causing a collision, not leaving space at apexes, marshals on track with cars at full speed, contentious VSC on the penultimate lap, maybe at some point we'll get some racing in? The Mexican Grand Prix this year wasn't the best day for F1 race direction and the ever rotating cast of stewards. Amongst all the controversy we still got one of the best races of the season with battles going on all the way down the grid, even Lance Stroll managed to get a clean overtake in (if that doesn't say it's the end of days, I don't know what does.) And through all that, the 3 way battle for the championship is still going on and going down to the wire.

This week on the podcast we look back at the Mexican Grand Prix where Lando Norris managed to re-take the lead in the Word Driver's Championship for the first time since before the Suadi Arabian GP, after a very off the boil start to the weekend for team-mate and rival Oscar Piastri. But you can't forget the looming shadow of Max Vertappen, who is still up there too.

As always there's some attempts at predictions for how the rest of the season is going to pan out as we've still got 4 races and 2 sprints to go and it's really anyone's guess as to who is going to walk away with the 2025 crown. Doesn't stop us having a go though!

Also, sorry for missing last week after the US GP, but we were victims of the Amazon outage last Monday and it took until Wednesday to get things recovered properly

Episode 379 - Is 2025 The New 2007?

So Singapore then? Yes we got to see George Russell on the top step with a seemingly resurgent Max Verstappen taking 2nd, which only leaves 1 step on the podium for McLaren and this time round it was Lando Norris, but it was in a way that didn't exactly please Oscar and the other side of the garage.

Congratulations to McLaren on clinching their 2nd consecutive World Constructor's Championship, but now the hard work really starts for them. They've got 2 drivers in contention for the driver's crown, but it seems like things aren't exactly cordial right now. After Forcing Oscar to let Lando past after a fudged pit stop in Monza and now not letting him by after the usual Sinagpore GP lap 1 "3 into 1 doesn't go" first corner. Do we get the impression that Oscar is now driving for Oscar, due to the team having got their spot at the top?

We try and make sense of what's coming for the rest of the 2025 season as well as a stack of our usual going off on tangents (there's more in the Patreon show if that's your kind of thing). Along with our usual team by team lookback at the race and some of the best radio we've heard from Fernando Alonso since the last time he let the pitwall know his thoughts!

Episode 378 - Falonso Is Faster Than You

There's always something special about the Italian Grand Prix. It's a combination of the out and out speed of the circuit, the stands full of the Tifosi , even when Ferrari aren't on top form and of course a National Anthem before the race that it's impossible to sing without sounding like you 100% mean every word of it. And this week, we got the full package!

This week we look back at the Monza race where Max Verstappen proved that RedBull can still make a car that can destroy the rest of the grid on pure pace alone and McLaren proved that they are human after all by making mistakes and then fudging their solution to them when they crop up! Episode 376 - One Gets The Shoey While Another Gets The Boot(y)

Well that was a few days in the unhinged world of F1, we started off with an action packed British Grand Prix, which gave Lando Norris his first home win and Nico Hülkenberg his first podium in 239 starts, after some very mixed up weather conditions. And just when we thought the dust was settling in time for F1 to have the break before the official Summer break, RedBull go and pull something kind of unexpected out of the bag by announcing that their team principle and divisive character Christian Horner is no lonfer their team principle (or CEO for that matter)

This week on the podcast we unpick the events of the last few days and revel in the fact that we decided to record a couple of days late this week so didn't miss the big midweek story! There's a bit of a review of the British GP as I'm fairly sure that everyone's heard about it all by now, but fresh off the newswire there's our deep dive into the trainwreck that is (and has been for the last year) the RedBull situation. It's not a case of "we come to bury Horner, not to priase him" but more of our honest thoughts on him as a team principle and his image as a person (not many punches were pulled in the making of this bit).

On the Sauber side of the garage, we end up doing an impromptu Is That Glock as Kieren & Paul had done their homework, so we made Sian & Chris suffer because of it!

Episode 375 - Not An Oscar Winner

It's been a big time for Formula 1 these past few days, we've had the launch of Brad Pitt's long-awaited F1 movie coming straight after a triple header (that we managed to miss, but RIP the Groundhog) and then heading to Austria for what promised to be a shoot-out at RedBull's home track.

Well it didn't exacly pan out well for the team that gives you wiiings after all that (also Max didn't turn up to the movie premier in NYC either), but once again we saw a dominant performance from McLaren, who really have made THE car of 2025, leaving everyone else scabbling to pick up what they can from the race.

This week on the podcast there's some of your thoughts on the F1 movie, with a couple of spoilers (but there's a timer so you can skip through them) and the ups and downs of an Austrian Grand Prix that started with a fire and kind of went on from there.

Episode 374 - Right Thoughts Right Words Right Action

Well if that was the last Grand Prix at Imola for the forseeable future, it didn't leave us with a sour taste in the mouth and while it wasn't a classic race it was still better than some of the parades we've had round the circuit for the last 5 years since F1 made a return there in the patched together 2020 season.

This week we take a look back at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, the first of 2 Italian races this season and the start of the European races to boot. Could McLaren and in particular Oscar Piastri keep up their dominant form from the first quarter of the season, now we're not flying away as much, or with the appearance of a few upgrades (as is traditional at this time of year), would we see more than the papaya cars in the mix?

The answer was both sort of yes and sort of no as Max Verstappen spoiled the papaya party this week by completely turning around a RedBull that he wasn't overly keen on up to Saturday afternoon to pull out his most Max-like performances of the season so far. After "that move" on turn 2, there was seemingly no stopping him from running away with it. Especially when McLaren decided to let their drivers race rather than try to strategise a win!

Obviously we're as tangent heavy as always (for some reason that you'll hear) and we've ended up with Franz Ferdinand as our featured band of the week (when did this become a music pod?) And as a bonus, while he's not here this week, Dan has promised to be on more shows this year!

Episode 373 - The Papaya State

Florida is known for orange things, mainly oranges. But this weekend it was a slightly different shade that captured all the headlines in Miami as we saw a hugely dominent showing from the Papaya clad McLaren team at the Miami Grand Prix weekend. Taking the top 2 steps on the podium in both the Sprint and Grand Prix races showed that this season the comeback is fully on!This week on the pod we take a look at the Maimi GP raced round the car park of the Hard Rock Stadium, home of the Miami Football Franchise (well that's what it said on the official F1 shirts anyway) where Lando & Oscar traded wins across Friday and Saturday with just about everyone else as an also-ran.There's the usual team by team review and look at what the F1 news is at the moment and what will probably come out after this pod's released (come on Tuesday, show us what you've got) with all the speculation from the aftermath of his lap 1 exit that we may have seen the last of Jack Doohan for now in an Alpine.Expect the usual tangents as well and also the return of Dan while Kieren is sunning himself touring the breweries of California! Episode 372 - Jewel In The Dessert

After the fairly restrained Japanese Grand Prix we needed a bit of a plate cleanser and that's exactly what Bahrain served up to us for out 2nd race in the Gulf this season. A dominant win for McLaren's Oscar Piastri , but eith more FIA based chaos hiding beneath the surface.

This week on the podcast we look at the Bahrain Grand Prix which saw a huge number of technical gremlins strike several teams, and some very strange and late calls from the stewards, which ened up ahving a negative effect on a few driver's races. It all kicked off on Saturday when Nico Hulkenberg's best Q1 lap time was deleted during Q3, but the problem was he'd already taken part in Q2 when it turned out he shouldn't have actually got through, this had a knock on effct on Alex Albon, who should then have made the 2nd session with a car that team principle James Vowles claimed had th pace for Q3.

It didn't get much better from there as we had timing failures, George Russell able to open his DRS manually and by mistake (when he wqas trying to use the radio) and who knows what else. As usual there's our team by team review and the expected sheload of tangents!

Episode 371 - Balls Of Fire

That about sums up 2 of the 3 most interesting things about the Japanese Grand Prix this weekend. The other one was, of course, Max Verstappen's blistering Q3 lap for pole position. But there was fire aplenty at trackside and you've got to feel for Isack Hadjar after his seatbelts were causing him grief in what Top Gear would describe as "The Gentleman's area"

This week on the pod we try and make up things to say about one of the dullest Japanese GP's we've had the pleasure of sitting through, it was the first race outside of Monaco where the top 6 on the grid were the top 6 by the end of the race and that stat would have gone further down the order had Lewis not passed Hadjar's Racing Bull to break the tedium (we're really selling this episode aren't we!)

There are thankfully a few tangents to break the parade up and there's a great Is That Glock as well, so it's not all that bad!

Well they've done it again, RedBull have done a mid-season driver swap with RB and this time it's a new record. Liam Lawson only got 2 races in the "big" team as Max Verstappen's team-mate to prove himself, even though he's now in his 3rd rookie season after 2 years as VCARB's super-sub.

This week on the podcast we take a deep dive into whatever the hell it is that RedBull (Mainly Helmut Marko) is playing at and how they've potentially managed to derail 2 driver's careers in one badly thought out move. Of course we could be wrong and this could turn out to be the genius move of the season, but previous form, and they've got a LOT of previous form in this, says that it probably won't be,

There's a brief few bits of other news including Ferrari's floor and Aston Martin selling shares and buying shares at the same time along with the usual healthy amount of tangents and we've even got a new Is That Glock (complete with jingle as well!)

Episode 369 - Gene Simmons Floor?

2 weeks in to the 2025 F1 season and we think we all know which way the wind is blowing and also that it's coloured Papaya! BUT it wouldn't be an new season without a little RedBull turmoil and the meat grinder might well be called into action sooner than we expected this time round.This week on the podcast we look back at the Australian GP with its multiple disqualifications, Ferrari going from triumph to utter disaster in the space of a day and the whole will they or won't they with RedBull and Liam Lawson. The rumours coming out are fairly varied, ranging from Yuki Tsunoda is swapping seat with him for or before Japan, to Franco Collapinto is going to be in a RedBull branded car before then. Episode 368 – Words Of Wisdom, Water is Actually Wet

Not from us though! Ferrari’s pit wall did it again after their calculated deductions that the reason that Charles’ seat was wet must have been because of water and in other news rain falls from the sky (thank you Will Buxton).

This week we look back on a season opener that had just about everything you could ask for; wheel to wheel racing, on-track passing, a bit of rain, a variety of pit strategies (once again, thatnk you Ferrari, you never dissappoint) and minimal interference from the stewards/FIA.

The 2025 season has got off to a strong start for some and not exactly strong for others, but it’s a long year and we’ve still got 23 races and 6 sprints to go so don’t plan on celebrating just yet if you did well and don’t think that your season is over if you didn’t (unless you’re Jack Doohan and the rumours are tru and you’ve got to make a VERY quick impression on good old Flavvy B)

Can you believe it? We have been doing this podcast for 10 whole years now! OK we haven’t been as regular as normal lately, but sad to say life happens. But as we head into a new F1 season, we’re going to make an effort to get back to some kind of regular schedule again, starting right here.

On this week’s podcast we get all over-excited about the new season starting this weekend in Australia. There’s new driver on the grid, there’s rookies with more experience than some well known F1 names from the past and there’s only 2 teams with the same lineup as 2024. So there’s a lot to unpick already and we’ve only had the 3 day pre-season test

So it’s finally happened, this month’s “worst kept secret in F1” has come to fruition and Sergio Perez & RedBull have parted company. This has been rumoured to be happening for a while and for the last couple of months it was becoming more of a “when” than an “if”.

This week on the podcast we look at the reasons behind why Checo has been let go and what the future is like for RedBull’s seemingly cursed 2nd seat.

Bit of a change for us, we’ve recorded this week’s show an hour after the chequered flag in one of the most penalty strewn races that we’ve seen in a while, the Qatar Grand Prix. As of approx 8:30 GMT on Sunday night, this was the finishing order we had, but we’re not 100% sure this will still be the same by the time you listen to it.

He’s done it! Max Verstappen has taken his 4th World Driver’s Championship crown after it looked a bit patchy in places this season. But the current guy to beat on the grid has walked away with the title with 2 races and sprint to spare in the half conquering RedBull (his half is all conquering, but when you average things out…)

This week on the podcast we’ve not only got all our thoughts on a pretty decent 2nd edition of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, but also the news that broke on Monday(!!!!!) that GM/Cadillac are going to be on the F1 grid from 2026 after all the to-ing and fro-ing with the Andretti bid that they were part of.

Another enforced break, another comeback and another Ferrari victory. We should be getting paid by the Scuderia to take more time off!

This week on the (yet another) return of the podcast we try to catch up on everything we’ve missse over the last month and a half and also fit a USA Grand Prix review in as well. Has the challenge from Lando Norris fizzled out as he ended up (his own words) “driving like a Muppet” on Sunday which ended up with a controversial penalty, although all the penalties and non-penalties this week were controversial. And does this mean Max is now on the front foot for the WDC fight this year?

When it comes to the constructor’s championship, that’s so far up in the air it’s practically in orbit and with a Ferrari 1-2 in Austin we could be in for a 3-way fight for it over the final 5 weekends of the season.

As said on the show, hopefully we’ll see you next week, seeing as we’re 1 race weekend in to the 1st of 2 triple header (maths!)

First we’ll start with an apology for being more anonymous than your average Sauber for the last 2 months. We’ve had a few things to put up with, family stuff, Covid (again), day job stress, mental health problems and more But what a time to make a comeback!

This week on the podcast we look back at the Italian Grand Prix where once again McLaren seemed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory and hand a win to the home team of Ferrari. At least RedBull have suddenly found themselves dropping down the pack with a massively unbalanced car that’s getting more expletives from Max than we heard from him in the Toro Rosso days!

There’s all the news as well (up to Monday anyway, thank you very much Adrian Newey) with Kimi Antonelli joining Mercedes, Nobody having a clue what’s going on with the RedBull/RB seats for next year and you can tell we’ve had a couple of months off as Alpine have got another new team principle

Advance warning, thanks to 3 of us being on holiday at the same time (not all together though, Kieren would never fit in a suitcase) we’ll be back in a couple of weeks and you never know, we might do that poolside podcast we were threatening last year!
