3 Roads’ Cynthia Scott-Johnson and Russ Hodge met with the Philippine Ambassador to the United States, Jose L. Cuisia Jr., last week to update him on the progress made on the production of the company’s documentary, Rescue in the Philippines.

The documentary details the heroic rescue of more than 1,300 European Jews to the Philippines immediately prior to World War II by a combination of  then-President Manuel Quezon, then- Col. Dwight Eisenhower, U.S. High Commissioner Paul McNutt, and the Frieder Brothers— cigar manufacturers from the U.S. and leaders of the Manila Jewish community.

Ambassador Cuisia pledged the continued support of the Philippines government for the production and distribution of the documentary. AND COUNTING…

Our Public Television show The Truth About Money With Ric Edelman surpassed 10,000 broadcasts by its first anniversary in late April. Our second season of twenty-six new episodes has just begun even wider distribution.

Ric also reached another broadcast milestone this month when his radio show celebrated its 20^th year on the air on May 2nd —showing America’s top independent financial advisors is on a roll.

 ADDING TO OUR AWARD TALLY

Our “Telly Tally” just grew and we are good Communicators too!

A whopping 6 for 6, 3 Roads has won 2 (out of 2 entries) People’s Choice Tellys and 4 (out of 4 entries) Communicator Awards for various projects listed below.

The two episodes of our Public Television show The Truth About Money With Ric Edelman which won Tellys this year were put up on a website for voting on the People’s Choice Tellys — and both garnered the award based on the votes of the masses.

For the Communicator Awards, two episodes of The Truth About Money With Ric Edelman earned “Excellence” honors, while a video produced for Navy Dental designed to recruit graduate dental students and a promotional video for Ability Prosthetics & Orthotics garnered “Distinction” honors.  Details of the Communicator Award can be seen in the separate news item on our website.

Out of the thousands of entries from companies and agencies of all sizes vying for a prestigious Communicator Award, all four 3 Roads entries garnered recognition.  Now in its 18th year and one of the largest awards of its kind in the world, the Communicator honors the best in advertising, corporate communications, public relations and identity work for print, video, interactive, and audio.

3 Roads received honors for the following:

*The Truth About Money With Ric Edelman Episode 117 received “Excellence” honors for using the story of Goldilocks to illustrate the challenges of knowing when the time is “just right” to take money out of an IRA as well as Edelman’s interview with author Carol Joynt.

*The Truth About Money With Ric Edelman Episode 118 also received “Excellence” honors as Edelman shared tips on how to teach children about handling money and interviewed Washington Post financial columnist Michelle Singletary.

*A third video produced for Navy Dental and designed to recruit graduate dental students for the U.S. Navy garnered “Distinction” honors brought our winning tally to 3 for 3.

*A 30-second promotional video for the company Ability Prosthetics & Orthotics received “Distinction” honors, rounding out our honors.

These two most recent awards for the first season of The Truth About Money With Ric Edelman bring the total award count for the show to 14.

The awards are sanctioned and judged by the International Academy of the Visual Arts, an invitation-only body consisting of top-tier professionals from a “Who’s Who” of acclaimed media, advertising, and marketing firms.

Yes, Elmo from Sesame Street.

Elmo has a financial literacy program for kids and so we took a road trip to Sesame Street to get the straight scoop from the Muppet’s mouth for our Public Television series The Truth About Money with Ric Edelman.

In the tell-all interview, Elmo talked about saving, sharing, and spending (hint: he’s saving for a tricycle) and even dished about the Cookie Monster’s problems with sharing.

The episode will begin airing nationwide this summer on public television stations in the US. The series begins distribution on April 19th. Check your local listings.

 3 ROADS TO WEBCAST “FREDERICK READS” EVENT

Award-winning science writer and best-selling author Rebecca Skloot (pictured at right) will be interviewed by NPR’s Michele Norris (pictured at left) Thursday April 19th at 7:30 pm at the Weinberg Center for the Arts in Frederick, Maryland.

The event is free (doors open at 6:30) and a question-and-answer session with the audience will be held after the interview.

Skloot’s book,  The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, was named by more than 60 critics as one of the best books of 2010.  The book tells a fascinating, true story of a collision between ethics, race, and medicine.

3 Roads is partnering with Frederick Reads to cover the interview and Q&A session to be made available online for all to see.

TRUTH ABOUT MONEY TO BE FEATURED ON NEXT AVENUE 

89 million Americans are age 50+ and in the next ten years, that number will grow by over 20 percent.  This is the basis for the new public television website Next Avenue — which caters to Baby Boomers.

Just as Elmo has put his effort into educating youth, Next Avenue will put its effort toward not only educating, but connecting America’s “more mature.”

The Truth About Money With Ric Edelman fits the bill perfectly as Ric provides valuable information on retirement, health, and paying for college.  3 Roads reached an agreement with the people at Next Avenue to feature dozens of clips from the series as well as articles from Ric.

(IT’S A GOOD THING)

No, being “stripped” in TV talk does not mean that the show is being taken off the air — in fact, it means that the show will be aired at the same time daily, so that it appears as a strip straight across the weekly schedule.

Starting April 2nd, The Truth About Money With Ric Edelman, will be in a nightly prime-time slot on WHUT, the Washington DC area Public Television station. The show will air every weekday at 6:00 PM, right before the news — a very important time slot.

The April 2nd date gives WHUT time to start showing episodes of the first season — leading right into the April 20th date when the second season begins its feed and public television stations can begin airing the new and improved episodes we’ve been working so tirelessly on.

The crew started in Las Vegas with an interview at the office of Bob Arum (pictured above) — top boxing promoter of greats such as Muhammad Ali, Manny Pacquiao, and many more.  The Vegas trip also coincided with the famous Bronx Tale solo stage performance by the  multi-faceted actor Chazz Palminteri — the crew got to watch the show and cap it off with an interview.  Next, we interviewed the stars of the hit TV show Pawn Stars as they talked about the art of buying up all your stuff you maybe never thought would be worth something.  While at the Pawn Shop, you would never guess who happened to be there and asked to get interviewed for the show…country music legend Randy Travis.

Los Angeles’ weather wasn’t as warm as one might hope, but the crew was at work anyway interviewing President of Variety Inc, Neil Stiles — as well as Phil Rosenthal, creator of Everybody Loves Raymond as well as director, writer, and star of the documentary Exporting Raymond.

Phoenix was the last stop and lived  up to its warm expectation as the crew visited Chase Stadium, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks baseball team, to interview owner Ken Kendrick.  Then back to Frederick!

“RESCUE IN THE PHILIPPINES” HAS NEW YORK SHOWING

3 Roads documentary, Rescue in the Philippines, is still in progress.  But a ten minute rough cut recently premiered at the Harmonie Club on Fifth Avenue in New York City.

More than sixty guests applauded the story of the Frieder brothers, four American cigar manufacturers who teamed with  the first elected President of the Philippines, Manuel Quezon; U.S. High Commissioner Paul McNutt, and then Colonel Dwight Eisenhower to rescue more than 1,200 European Jews from the Holocaust.

3 ROADS ON THE ROAD

3 Roads has been busy travelling all directions: North, South, East, West.

After getting back from the Far East in the Philippines late last month, the crew was off on a road trip South to Florida to shoot segments for the public TV show The Truth About Money With Ric Edelman– including stops in Jacksonville, Ft. Lauderdale, Key West, and Sarasota.

The third week of February, we went North to New York City for the Rescue in the Philippines reception mentioned above as well as interviews for the documentary and our public TV show The Truth About Money With Ric Edelman — then another interview at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

Next month, we go West to Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Phoenix for more interviews on our major projects.  We have our compasses ready.
