Mood Changes in a "Snap"

Truth be known, I started this long weekend on the pouty side. I am ready for vacation and I wanted to kick-start summer with a short get-a-way. When that didn't materialized, I felt BLAH. But on Friday I was sitting outside and I grabbed the camera. Snapping these photos almost instantly changed my mood.

This is how we spent our weekend.

It could be the nice weekend activities. It could be the way photographs make me take a step back to look at things. It could be the anticipation of seeing what was captured with the lens. It could be a combination of all of the above. I am not sure. I just know I am finding photography extremely therapeutic.

This was the plan for the weekend.

Even though laying on a raft by yourself is almost unheard of around here.

But Sun Kissed Boy #1 has swimmer's ear. That means no swimming for seven days. :(

But relaxing is still the plan. Just not floating.

Ten Years Ago Today

It's a strange feeling knowing the exact day your baby will be born. Through the magic of pitocin, this sweet little baby looked into my eyes and completely changed my life.

Today he starts his day with breakfast in mommy and daddy's bed as he watches TV.

He looks forward to the day ahead full of sugary treats and surprises.

Meanwhile, I reflect on the last ten years. I reflect on the firsts. First birthday. First step. First time he held his littlest brother.

I reflect on the ones that won't see him grow up.

I reflect on how he's changed my world. How he makes me want to be a better person. I look forward to seeing him become the young man he's turning into.

Happy Birthday, my first boy!

Six Years Ago Today...

... I was walking through Target. It was a particularly uncomfortable day for me. I was 37 weeks pregnant and the little baby inside my belly seemed to be squashing my insides out. But I had my shopping cart full of baby clothes ready to be purchased with all the gift cards given to me at my baby shower that previous weekend. So I would lean against the cart, pause, catch my breath, and kept on going. Three hours later, Sun Kissed Boy #2 was born.

Shortly when I got home from Target, my water broke. Turns out that the "uncomfortable" feeling I was experiencing, were contractions.

Today my three-weeks early, eight and a half pounds chunk of a baby turns 6!

He was a very fussy baby, then became a fussy toddler. He somehow managed to do a 180 and became the sweetest little man...

...whom I love to the moon and back! <3

Behind our house is a canal.

Behind that canal are some bushes.

Behind those bushes is a street. A street with cars... and a PLANE??!!

Yep. On Saturday, a 1965 Mooney airplane had engine trouble and made an emergency landing behind our house.

Miraculously enough, no one was injured. In life, there's seldom dull moments.

Personalized Metal Stamped Necklaces

Last week we celebrated our teachers. I consider myself lucky to be surrounded by wonderful educators for my children. I wanted to make them something special to express my gratitude. I made them, and some of the ladies from administration, personalized necklaces.

Even though Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week is over, I wanted to share this project because you can make these for end of the year presents. They make sweet little presents for any time of the year. Here are the materials needed:

Metal Stamps (1/8"; from Harbor Freight)

Washers (from Home Depot)

Jewelry Cords (JoAnn Fabrics has a value pack of 4)

Hammer

Garden Brick or other hard surface (sidewalk or any concrete surface will work)

Sharpie Marker (thin tip)

Paper Towel

Stamp name, trace over it with the marker, and wipe excess ink.

Thread necklace through washer in a loop like shown below.

For a pretty presentation, tie the necklace around a mason jar with fresh flowers. (Tip: It's a good idea to always save sauce, pickle or jelly jars for projects like these.)

Chicken Gorgonzola Cheese Melt

At the Sun Kissed household, we BBQ often. Almost every weekend, you can find us in the backyard partaking of delicious grilled grub with friends. No matter how many times we've done this, we also have a tendency to over buy food, leaving us with lots of leftovers.

Sun Kissed Husband wanted to come up with something different to do with the surplus instead of just reheating them back up. It was then when he created the Chicken Gorgonzola Cheese Melt! These are the ingredients we used from what was on hand from the previous day.

Chicken Breast

Bacon

Gorgonzola Cheese

Avocado

Greek Feta Dressing

Mustard

Potato Bun

First, cut chicken breast in half. Top with bacon and cheese. Heat up in microwave for about 2 minutes or until the gorgonzola is melted to your liking.

While that heats up, smash avocado and spread greek-feta dressing on bun. I like using the Cafe Athens brand, but any dressing on hand will work.

Place chicken on prepared bun and top with yellow mustard.

Serve with a side dish (seen here with shrimp macaroni salad) and enjoy!

For those of you watching your carbs, omit the bun and serve with a thin slice of tomato and/or avocado.

These leftovers are worthy of another get-together with friends!

The Double Edge Sword of Mother's Day

Good morning, friends! How was your weekend? Did you mommies out there get to have a nice Mother's Day? Mine started out with breakfast in bed made by this wonderful guy.

Afterwards, we loaded up the car with boys and decor magazines and headed to the beach.

With some help from the Sun Kissed Boys, Sun Kissed Husband, made breakfast, packed lunches, loaded/unloaded the car, bathed and put the kids to bed. Sounds wonderful, right?! Well, I can't lie. It was. I didn't have to do much all day.

Buuuut the aftermath is what it's difficult. Think of it as being gone from the office an entire day and when you get back to work, the in-box is overflowing. Except my in-box is a laundry basket (actually laundry "floor" since that's where all the dirty clothes & towels seem to be). My in-box is also a sink-full of dirty dishes, messy table and counter tops, and a playroom with too many toys!

After almost 18 years of marriage, I've, reluctantly, come to realize that my husband and I see messes differently. In all fairness we had a "dump-and-go" weekend. I call that when we are running from one event to the other and we just stop by the house to dump off things from the previous event, change clothes, and go to the next one.

I could sit here and whine about how I wish that on top of having a fun-filled day I also wish that all the chores would have gotten done; but that's unrealistic so I might as well shut it. Instead, I'll think about the smiling faces that greeted me for breakfast, the laughter I heard in between the crashing waves, and the loving man that kissed me goodnight.

Remember being little and going to the beach (or any body of water)? All the grown-ups talking about how cold the water was and saying things like 'How can you go in the water? Isn't it cold?'. No! As a kid the water is seldom too cold! I thought of those days, of many moons ago, while I watched the boys enjoy the water & sunshine this weekend.

It was the first time we've had a chance to gather at home and enjoy each other's company in the back yard in a while. The boys enjoy the family get-together. Perfecting their jumps is very high on their list too!

The Children's Place Summer Styles 2012

Yesterday, I had a chance to visit The Children's Place to see their summer line. Colorful, tropical, and shimmery is the look of the season. It definitely has me looking forward to summer.

Although their boys' selection is adorable, I was really drawn to their girl fashions.

I shopped some for the boys.

Lucky for me, I have a girlfriend expecting a baby girl very soon (as a matter a fact, she's in labor as I write this very post!) so I had a chance to shop for her as well.

Ok, so I loved the shimmery flip flops so much, I got one for myself! ;D

Marquee Alphabet Letter Review

I can't seem to keep myself from collecting typography. This marquee alphabet letter became part of my collection last Christmas. Out of all of the letters I've accumulated, this one has to be the most unique.

I got mine at Urban Outfitters, however, I have seen similar ones on Etsy. I am not sure about the ones on Etsy, but before you rush out to Urban Outfitters to buy one, here are a few things you should keep in mind.

It is pricey. Regular price for this glowing "S" is $179. Tip: When shopping online, no matter the store, always do a search for coupon codes for that particular store. Nine out of ten times, I find some kind of savings.

It's a dust magnet. There are 25 little bulbs to attract dust. That's not considering the letter itself.

The lighting mechanism consists of a string of lights you assemble. No worries though, even if one goes out, the rest stay lit.

There is no "on/off" button. It's a plug in/plug out system.

It has the capability to be hung on a wall. However, the string of lights only has about a six-inch lead. Keep that in mind when thinking of placement.

It is BRIGHT! It has 25 7-watt bulbs. It's definitely not meant to be an energy saver. I've been meaning to change out the bulbs but never seem to think of it when going to Home Depot. It is another expense added to the cost of the purchase but it's better than keeping the electric meter turning.

The letter casing is made out of metal but it does not get hot to the touch.

With all that being said, it is a cool piece. For that reason alone, I'd buy it again. Sometimes one has to sacrifice functionality for funkiness!

Take My Child to MY Work?!

Thursday was "Take Your Child to Work Day". Children are excused from school for the purpose of exposing them to lines of work to help them form some ideas about future career paths. Keeping that in mind, when Sun Kissed Boy #1 asked to stay home with me to experience "my job", which is housewifing, my first reaction was to say no. But after some thought, I decided that it would be a good experience for him to see what I do on any given day. My "every day" sort of speak.

After the littler brothers were dropped off at school, we got to work. I tackled the laundry as he tidied, vacuumed, put laundry away, helped me move furniture around, hung up art, cleaned up the backyard, and danced somewhere in between all that.

This boy has a way of keeping me on my toes. When we finished, the house looked really good. So he says, "Mom, no offense. I don't see how this is your "every day" because our house doesn't always look this nice". He was right. This is when I explained to him about self motivation (and lack there of). I told him about teamwork. Working together not only made the job go faster but it also kept us motivated to stay on track.

I also told him that I often have to do things outside the house. So off we went to run a couple of errands.

Like a lot of jobs, this job has it's perks too. After our chores were done, we joined a friend for lunch.

Our day turned out to be a very productive one. We worked hard. I couldn't let it end without asking him if he now understood why I get upset when him and his brothers leave messes behind. He understood. I don't think he's a changed person but at least he understood.

Party Favors from Target's Bargain Section

Target has an area in their stores called "Happy Bargains". You've probably noticed it. It's a small section of little isles right at the entrance filled with items priced at $1.00 or $2.50. I always like to browse through it because you never know what you can find. That's where I came across the Wild Things bag that I decoupaged on the Wild Thing Stool. Every time I rummage through these knickknacks, I always think what wonderful party favors they would make. Here are a few I thought would be adorable for kids (or grown-up) parties.

If your party-goers like to monkey around, then Paul Frank's version of the sock monkey is a perfect fit. Right now, Target has totes, erase boards, sticky notes, or key chains for a dollar each.

Spring is the right time of the year for a Garden Party. Have your guests leave with this cute watering can. On it's own, it's just $2.50 or pair it with colorful garden gloves for $1.00 more.

Summer is just around the corner. A Pool Party might be in the works. These mini water guns are sure to be a crowd-pleaser during the party and to keep the fun going at their own homes later. Make a game of it by having the guests shoot at pin wheels with the water guns. See who can make it spin faster, splash the most water, etc. The water guns are $2.50 and the pin wheels $1.00.

For Baseball-themed parties, these little rugs ($2.50) are a darling take-a-way gift. Think about personalizing them (before the party), with craft paint, with each of the kids' names.

It's also fun to make the party favor a project during the party. These basket totes, at $2.50 each, are perfect for decorating.

Getting Ready for the Storm

On Friday, the weather forecasters had promised thunderstorms through the night. When the sky started flashing, Sun Kissed Boy #1 began getting ready. Since we live in a place where hurricanes are a yearly threat, he knows that if we ever need to hunker down, we need to take shelter in a window-less room. In our house, that room is the boys' bathroom. He gathered up things to be safe AND comfortable. Cooper, blankies and lovies went in first.

Once he had the brothers in the bathtub, he explained the "seriousness" of the situation. He told them that there would be lighting, loud thunder, and the electricity could go out.

After he had laid it all out, he was free to relax and wait.

Everyone was relaxing and waiting for the storm to pass.

However, he must have worried Sun Kissed Boy #2 because he suggested they pray. Sun Kissed Boy #1 was in charge of the prayer and some of it went like this: "Please, dear Lord, give us a bigger bathtub so the entire family can fit. Oh, and Lord, please, make my mom stop shooting pictures so we can get to the business of surviving".

About 15 minutes later, they realized that it was just a rain storm and the electricity was still on... so they left the bathtub and watched a movie instead!

Cheering Up a Dreary Room

It has been a while since I've written any decor-type of posts so today I thought I'd share how I changed up the living room for spring.

Due to the light walls and furniture, this room can easily look a little drab and washed out. Accessories not only bring in pops of color, but they can also transform the look and feel of a room.

By adding bright pillows and a tangerine lamp shade, this room feels cheery and fun. To give it some visual interest, I mixed different textures on the pillows and throw.

The living room gets used a lot so it's also got to be comfortable. Putting a pretty throw on the couch makes it cozier and inviting.

When decorating, I recommend taking pictures of the room. The camera gives it a set of "fresh eyes" allowing you to see it in a different perspective. I didn't notice how bare the walls looked until I saw the photographs. I am still working in this corner but I hung up the picture frame there for the moment. Re-positioning accessories is another way to change up a room.

I am a horrible gardener. My "flowers" are right here on this sofa. A combination of them and the afternoon sun beaming through the windows, make me happy.

Meet Angry Mommy

When the boys are acting up or are about to do what I know will make me fly off the handle, I try to defuse the situation by jokingly reminding them that they don't want Angry Mommy coming out. Just so you have an idea, Angry Mommy looks something like this.

I warn them about Angry Mommy but the truth is that when Angry Mommy comes around, she comes quick and without funny warnings. Angry Mommy is impatient, irrational, and has a knee-jerk reaction to situations. Oh and she runs rampant at a certain time of the month. Last night, while helping with homework, Angry Mommy paid a visit.

So why am I writing about such a terrible creature? Well, I write a lot about the wonderful days I have as a mom, and though they are far between, mommy-hood has it's down days. Yesterday afternoon was one of those wretched times. I let Angry Mommy take over even though, as she was there yelling, somewhere in the back of her head there was a sane person asking her to 'calm down for goodness sakes'!

I, Loving Mommy, feel terrible to let Angry Mommy take over. I'm wondering, does she visit your home as well? How do you make her go away? Better yet, what do you do to KEEP her away?

Easy Entertainment for a Rainy Day

A long part of Saturday was dreary and rainy here. The kids were cooped-up inside and getting a little loud. A lot loud.

They weren't being bad, just kids. But I needed to find a way to quiet them down (that didn't involve television) to keep my sanity. So I rolled out the craft paper on the kitchen table. We painted sun-catchers, drew pictures, played several intense games of tic-tac-toe, and connected-the-dots.

We also added more thankful notes to the jar. It has been a while since we've done that. The first time Sun Kissed Boy #3 added a thankful note, he drew his blessings. This time he actually wrote them.

After that, we made grill cheese sandwiches and then electronics won them over once more.

Even though I've made a conscious decision to be the kind of mom that is engaging, it's easy to get side-tracked from that goal with the demands of everyday life. When Sun Kissed Boys 2 & 3 came in my bedroom dragging a basket-full of potato heads for us to play, my first reaction was to turn them away until I finished yet another task. But I quickly vanished that thought way and reminded myself of the mom I strive to be.

When the boys play, I want to be IN the moment, not just in the vicinity. I want to be part of their giggles and creativity. When they grow up, I want them to remember me as a mom that was WITH them not just around them.

Had I not stopped what I was doing and taken a few minutes to play, I would have missed all cuteness that comes through every pore of their little bodies.

And I would never want to miss out on an Indiana Jones Potato Head battle where he saves the pretty blonde.

If I'd Won the Mega Millions

When I was a little girl I loved going to sleep just so I could dream. I use to think I could control what I dreamt about if I'd thought it right before bedtime. That never worked so I turned to daydreaming. I'd spend, what seemed like, hours imagining all kinds of scenarios in my mind. From what I remember, there was a lot of pink and a castle involved.

To this day, I am still a dreamer. When the Mega Millions jackpot rose to $640 million dollars a couple of weekends past, my daydreams went into overdrive! I had all kinds of plans about what I'd do with the money and how my life style would change. While my thoughts drifted about all the luxuries that kind of money could buy, I wondered if I'd still blog.

After not blogging at all last week, I'd have to say 'yes!'. I missed it. Even though I was away from blogland because the demands of my little ones take priority, I lost count how many times in the day I pondered about blog ideas, design, and post stories. However, my postings would maybe look a little different than they do know. Perhaps they would be something like this:

When I opened my eyes this morning, I immediately pinched myself. I am starting to get a bruise on my arm from doing this every morning. But I can't help it. I still can't believe I get to wake up to this.

I was the first one up and the house was quiet. I said a silent prayer, poured my coffee, went outside, and read a book. I read three chapters! I haven't read in that large of a chunk in nine years!

When I heard the giggling of the boys, I knew my reading time was up. I joined them in the dinning room where Chef Anton had arranged another gorgeous table setting with an exquisite breakfast to go with it.

The boys hardly ate though. Sun Kissed Husband promised them to go out surfing and they were anxious to hit the waves. I grabbed my camera and captured their exhilaration from the shoreline.

After all the water-log fun, the boys (and Sun Kissed Husband) were exhausted and took naps.

While they did that, I FINALLY cleaned out and decluttered the garage!

Seeing Crystal Clear

I want to thank those of you that took the time to comment on yesterday's post. I appreciate your encouraging words so much. I am very grateful that you always have something positive and uplifting to say. For those of you that didn't comment but kept my aunt and me in your thoughts and prayers, I thank you as well.

Bad eyes run in my family. Sadly, so far two of the Sun Kissed Boys have inherited this trait. First, Sun Kissed Boy #1 started wearing glasses when he was in 2nd grade. Now, Sun Kissed Boy #2 is taking a turn. Luckily, he seems to be pretty happy about these turn of events. I think it's because big brother has them.

He was excited, but patient, as the doctor checked his eyes.

I know I am bias but I think he looks adorable! He's got my iPhone camera working overtime. Click, click, click, click.

When he's had enough, he turns and hides. But not before I can catch one last shot. Click!

Remembering

Today is a sad day for me. It is the one year anniversary that my mom passed away. It feels strange not to have a parent. But I miss her the most for the things she's missing out on from the boys. When they have milestones that I wish she could have seen. Nothing huge like winning the Nobel Prize but the little everyday things like Sun Kissed Boy #2 turning an Easter egg into an Angry Bird.

Or the way Sun Kissed Boy #3 tries to make up for his "short-comings".

I like to think that she's somehow watching over them, thinking of them, praying for them, as she did when she was alive.

My mom had a twin sister, my Aunt Tita. If you know anything about twins you probably know that they have a special connection, an exceptional bond. I know today is even harder for her. She misses my mom incredibly and everyday is a struggle to be without her. Today is particularly tough. When you say your prayers today, won't you keep Aunt Tita in them? Thank you all.

I am not sure at what point television show directors stopped having songs as the intro to their shows. They still have theme music but they're instrumental, without lyrics. I for one, enjoyed the catchy tunes. You know what I'm talking about. The ones that you'd hear one day and it'd stick in your brain for a week.

That is sort of the case with me right now. I can't remember where I recently heard the theme song for Cheers but it has been playing in my head over and over since. Of course, what usually goes in my brain, in one form or another eventually turns into a post. Soooooo, I give you the Cheers theme song lyrics as seen in my life.
