The Scavenger Hunt

Summer break has started. Other than the extra laundry (that my boys generate from a bunch of pool towels and several changes of swimsuits & outfits), I really enjoy having them all home with me. However, there have been a few times already that I've heard the words most parents dread to hear. "IIII'm boooored!" Insert whiny voice here.

Since this isn't my first rodeo, I have a few tricks up my sleeve for such moments. Today's was an impromptu scavenger hunt.

With a clipboard, a list, and the right shoes, they were ready to go.

What is it about kids and measuring things? My boys love to measure stuff so the measuring tape went too.

It's a good idea to taylor the list to the childs' age and personality if not.... Always, always, always have a Plan B for those with short attention spans. I had him "read" to me while I cleaned up the kitchen.

Basketball at the Pool by Cooper the Dog

My brothers are lucky. They got a fun present. A basketball hoop. But not just any ole hoop, a pool basketball hoop. I laid down and watch them play.

It was fun seeing their fancy stunts.

My favorite one was the dad throws kid, kid throws ball, dunk. It's complicated. Stay with me now, as I explain it. The dad throws a kid. The kid has a ball in his hand. When the dad throws the kid, the kid throws the ball. The kid dunks it. Got that?

They also played regular basketball.

That's about when I loose interest. I prefer sleeping. It's not that complicated.

Just Me & My Boy

Once in a while the scheduling gods smile on us and things happen to work out that I get to spend some alone time with one of the boys. Yesterday was one of those afternoons where such opportunity arose. It was just me and the littlest Sun Kissed Boy.

He calls these one-on-one moments secret special times. I'm not sure why because we tell the brothers about our time. As a matter of fact, he will tell anybody that will listen (and even those who don't) about our times. But I find it cute that he labels it so.

There was time to play by the lake...

... and fish in the grass.

Time to explore...

... and enjoy the warmth of the setting sun.

Good secret special time, indeed.

Stuck in the Corner of Parenting and Am I Doing It Right?

When anyone asks me what I do for a living, my answer is 'I raise boys'. It might sound harsh to some that I see parenting as a job but raising children is work. Hard work. A 24-hour, 7-days a week job. No monetary reward and no real way of knowing if you're doing it right.

In a job outside of the home, if you turn in a project to your boss or client, their feed back is your way of knowing if you're successful. In parenting, there's no real way of knowing if you're being a good parent until they're grown and by then it might be too late.

Therefore, I am constantly questioning myself. Am I too soft? Am I too strict? Am I consistent? Do I yell too much? Do I not yell enough? (I'm pretty sure the kids think I yell too much.) For the most part, the boys are good. But there are times when they lash out and that's when the second guessing comes along. We are going through a testing stage in our house. A stage where they push my buttons and test their limits.

When things don't go right, it can be overwhelming. To deal with this, I've started a journal. In it I write little things that the kids do "right". Simple things that I hear myself repeating to them over and over such as putting their plates in the sink, putting dirty clothes in the hamper, no fighting during dinner, or no back talk. I keep this journal for the nights that I go to bed ready to cry. I pull out my "Good Boy" journal and it helps calm my nerves.

What I've found is what I've known, but seeing in writing reaffirms, the good days outweigh the bad.

Suiting Up for Summer at The Children's Place

Somebody forgot to tell Florida that it's not summer yet. Goodness, it's hot around our parts. But that's ok. We have the beach to cool us off. There's also The Children's Place to suit us up!

Since he's always climbing around, I call him my little monkey. Therefore, I couldn't pass up this matching swimsuit, shirt, and flip flops. Side note: flip flops with straps on the back are perfect for climbing lil' monkeys. :)

I have a theory that if you throw on a pair of sunglasses and a lifeguard shirt, you amp-up your cool factor. Agree?

They Got Game

Basketball fever sweeps a big part of the United States this time of year. Top rated teams such as the Heat or the Thunder are doing swell but today I'd like to introduce you to a couple of teams you might not be familiar with that aren't doing too shabby. First we have the ones, the only, the undefeated, The Bulldogs!

Behind every great team is a great coach. I knew right away he was the coach because he had the shoes for it.

With a team named The Bulldogs, it's only natural that a bulldog be their mascot, right? Wrong! This team always thinks outside the box. A Westie/Schnauzer mix represents their team.

Now meet the opponents. I should say, the opponent. The one-man team, The Pirate!

Teams are nothing without being replenished. Meet The Watergirl.

The teams might drink with colorful, bendy straws but in the court, there's no room for cutesy.

The Bulldogs rethink their strategies with their coach. In this 3sunkissedboys.com exclusive, you can see the coach's playbook.

Apparently, the coach's thought was to tickle the opponent's legs as they shoot?

Even though The Pirate had the advantage, The Bulldogs pull off yet another victory with a final score of 32-30.

The Pirate did not take the loss well. However, he was not available for comment.

But I don't have a little girly. I have a typical little boy pirate. You know, like the ones you find waiting for their turn to make a basket.

The Noises of a Quiet House

In our house, the only time that there's complete quietness is during the wee hours of the night. After the boys are fast asleep, the dishwasher stopped humming, and David Letterman has said his goodnight, can you find true silence. Although I enjoy the noiseless solitude, there are certain quiet sounds I enjoy through out the day.

Sometimes it's the grunting of a dog trying to find just the right spot to cuddle.

Or perhaps the chatter of two little voices as they draw on the pavement.

Even the whooshing and bouncing of a basketball as a young boy practices again and again.

These are the noises that surround our house. The noises I know one day I will miss. I close my eyes and soak them all in because before I know it, they'll be gone.

Slideshow, Yearbook, Photobook, Oh My!

Hi there, friends! I've been gone so long that I don't even know where to start. I've heard that it takes three weeks for things to become a habit. I don't want NOT blogging to become a habit so I am working really hard to get back into the swing of telling you the little tales in my life.

Among tending to a husband and the kids, homework, swim practice, doctors visits, hospital visits, broken fingers, and housework; I took on a couple of special projects. First, I put together a slide show for the boys' swim team to be presented at their annual banquet.

Secondly, I volunteered to put together the boys' school yearbook.

Over the last two months I've looked at over 9,000 photos, edited about 3,000 of them, done 4 interviews, created a 17 minute slideshow/movie, put together a 100-page yearbook, aaand...

... because I'm a champ at starting other tasks when I'm suppose to be concentrating on another, I made a 60-page photo book for the boys!

I know, I know a person needs to know their limitations. But I couldn't pass up a chance for a free Blurb photo book using Instagram pics. Free, I tell ya! :)

Anyway, that's what has been taking up a chunk of my time recently. But they're all done, done and done. I'll be back later this week with another post. I've missed this habit.

HGTV's LoveHome {little} Appearance

Hi friends! Just stopping by real quick to share HGTV's latest ad for their #lovehome campaign. HGTV is encouraging all to submit photos on Instagram or Twitter with the theme of 'what home means to you'.

Home to me is being with all the Sun Kissed Boys and husband, together, anywhere. Due to Sun Kissed Husband's hectic work schedule, having all of us in one spot doesn't happen too often though. A few weeks ago; not only were we all under the same roof, at the same time; I was also able to capture this sweet moment between the littlest Sun Kissed Boy and his daddy.

That glimpse in time is what I posted on Instagram with the hashtag #lovehome. Shortly after HGTV contacted me that they were interested in including it in their ad campaign. Happy to to say, we made the cut! Here's the un-cropped picture. Look for it about 8 seconds in. But don't blink, it's on only for a split second. :)

Who knew that a split second could bring so much joy and pride to my heart?!

The Truth of the Elf on the Shelf

Happy New Year! I know it's a little late since January is almost over. Before I completely close the chapter on our 2012 holidays, which seem to have happened a long time ago, I have one more story to share.

January 3, 2013

It was a lazy morning. The boys had no school and Sun Kissed Husband and I enjoyed a cup of coffee in bed. Then Sun Kissed Boy #1 came in. He walked in the room with a sad look. He held something tightly in his hand. "What is the meaning of this?", he said with a shaky voice waving the skinny, red and white rag doll. It was our Elf on the Shelf, Christopher.

The very Elf that was suppose to "go away" after Christmas. The same Elf I thought I had hidden so well. The Elf that I painstakingly positioned every night during December with props borrowed from a friend and in messy places to throw the boys off, just in case they had any doubts.

I had no words for him. It was my turn to have a shaky voice. With tear-filled eyes, I turn to Sun Kissed Husband and asked him to "... take this one".

After two years of successfully putting it off, the Elf was explained and so was the Big Man he reports to. I think I took it harder than he did.

Later that night a girlfriend texted me something to share with him that had been circulating the web. I don't know its origination but it beautifully puts into words who Santa really is.

Next Christmas will be different. Next year, SKB #1 will help be part of the magic. That makes the rite of passage a little easier to take.

Earlier this month I headed to The Children's Place for outfits for the boys to wear at our Christmas card photo shoot. The Children's Place holiday collection is fun and cozy.

I didn't have anything specific in mind for them to wear. My only thought was that the outfits had to be dressier than play-clothes but not as dressy as a suit. Watch as the ideas come together in this video.

Holiday Living Room 2012

I've always wanted a wall covered in book pages. I just love how it instantly makes room look cozy and eclectic. But when I say instantly, I mean weeks. That's how long it took me to cover most of the wall. I do like the end result and will keep it there for a while. Or at least until I tire of it.

Here's a closer look at the wall.

Believe is a word we hear a lot this time of year around our house. It is usually referred to the belief of the magic of Santa. But this year the word Believe has a deeper meaning. It's more about the belief that we will live in a world without massacres. The belief that we can do kindness amidst the chaos. The belief that, even if it's just through prayer, we can help families going through inconceivable pain this time of year.

As if reading my mind, a sweet friend gave me this red Believe pillow.

I like having the boys close to me more than ever. Since I hang out in this space a lot, I wanted to keep a space where the kids could have a little corner to draw, write or craft and still be with the family.

I love the the shimmery lights at different spots in the room. I think I want to have twinkly lights year round.

We have two nativity scenes. A small one the boys like to play with and another one that belonged to my mom. The latter goes under the tree.

In case you're wondering, we leave baby Jesus out until his birth day. The only problem was that one year I hid the baby for the boys' nativity and I can't remember where that was. :0(

I almost forgot the tree! There are two very special ornaments in the tree this year. One is the antique key. It use to belong to Sun Kissed Husband's grandmother. The other is the rosary that was very dear to my mom.

I am feeling a stronger need to have His presence close by. Seeing the cross on the tree is a physical reminder that He always is.

Every morning, when I awake, I pray. I thank God for another day and I pray for the well-being of my kids. This might be the routine for a lot of parents. Perhaps parents from Newtown, Connecticut. Perhaps parents that sent their little ones off to Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012. But I can bet a million bucks that when they prayed, never in their wildest dreams did they think that the "well-being" included being safe from a deranged gunman coming into their school for a shooting spree.

I spent all day volunteering at the boys' school. I was in and out of classrooms all day. When I left, I finally had a few moments to catch up on where I unfortunately get most of my current events, Facebook. Feed after feed was about how disheartened my friends were about what had happened in Connecticut. Sun Kissed Husband called at that moment and filled me in on the details. My heart sank.

I immediately turned on the news. While I was listening to how the horrific story unfolded, I didn't notice that little ears were around. Sun Kissed Boy #2 said, "I'm glad I didn't go to that school". Sun Kissed Boy #3 said, "I can't believe somebody shoot a bunch of little kids!" I think they both expressed my thoughts.

Tonight my husband talked to the boys about what to do if a gunman came to their school. ...what to do if a gunman came to the school. Did I just write that? Did we just have to do that? Apparently so.

This Monday there will be an empty classroom full of empty desks. But it's nothing like the emptiness in the heart of the families of the victims. Their pain is unimaginable.

I realize that I am all over the place with this post. My thoughts are rambled. I can't wrap my head around our world at times. This isn't a post to solve anything or try to explain. It's to urge us all to pray to whatever or whoever you believe in. Pray for the victim's families. Pray for their strength, healing, sanity. And while you're at it, pray for a better world.

Letters to Santa

It's the time of year where the boys start making their lists to have the man with the bag check it twice. This year, in a very unplanned sort-of-way, they all chose very different ways to relate their message to Mr. Claus.

Sun Kissed Boy #3 didn't write a letter. He whispered his Christmas list to Christopher the Elf. After all, he tells Santa everything, right? It was a sweet and magical moment to watch. I was thankful to have my camera handy.

Sun Kissed Boy #2 preferred to go a little more high tech to get his wish list to Kris Kringle. The funny part was that he actually wrote everything out before he e-mailed it. That's his disposition, very methodical.

Finally, Sun Kissed Boy #1 chose to write a letter. An actual pencil to paper letter! Even though he thoroughly enjoys the comforts of technology, a big part of him loves nostalgia. He's a romantic and his choice of communication to St. Nick shows it.

It amazed me how each method of communication matched their personalities. I marveled at their uniqueness and imagination. It reminded me how kids can make the most ordinary things seem remarkable.

Hello, lovely readers!! Are you still out there or have you given up on me? I'll tell you who hasn't given up on my blog. My Sun Kissed Boy #1. He asks me everyday if I have posted. Today he reminded me that it's going to be almost a month since my last post. It touches my heart that he's so dedicated to reading it. Speaking of SKB #1, he's sporting an accessory I'm sure he rather do without. It's a football injury and the cast should be coming off shortly after Christmas.

Here's what else has been going on around our house.

Thanksgiving came and went and the only picture I took of the delicious feast was of the turkey. The rest were mostly of chubby little fingers and toes.

We started a new tradition. The Elf on the Shelf is visiting our house. Our elf is named Christopher and he's a lot of fun... and a glutton.

The biggest event in our family was a surprise wedding. After almost 18 years of dating, my sister-in-law and her now husband tied the knot! It happened right here in my house. What I thought was a simple family dinner ended in a simple exchange of vows. It was sweet, intimate, perfect.

Life around this time of year is always busy but it is certainly never dull.

I Buy Toys, Why?

Growing up, I did not have very many toys. I was born in a country where parents were allowed to purchase toys for their children only once a year. It was called "Toy Day". Parents would be given a random number and that would be their place in line. On "Toy Day", little ones, along with their moms and dads, would excitedly stand in line (outside a store that normally did not have toys in their inventory) to choose up to three toys.

Because of this, I am guilty of over compensating with my own kids. Showering them with an abundance of toys. However, sometimes they prefer playing with "things".

The rocks gathered here make up a bed.

The pieces of scrap wood is a house.

Of course, that doesn't mean they don't utilize their toys.

I needlessly worry that if they don't have many toys, they'll feel like they are missing out as I felt when I was little. However, I probably over stress about that. After all, I survived without without needing any therapy! This is something I need to keep in mind this holiday season.

Riiiing, riiiing.

Me: Hello?

SKHusband: Do you know what today is?

I immediately started wrecking my brain to think what momentous occasion I had forgotten. It wasn't a birthday or a wedding anniversary. I had checked my calendar earlier in the day and didn't see anything scheduled that I was late for. Then I remembered.

It seems like a lifetime ago but only 19 years have passed. The memory replays in my mind like a movie. It was an unusually breezy and crisp cool day. The kind that we don't get very often in October in South Florida.

We lived in a small apartment on a golf course. A golf course where we often took after-dinner walks. Walks where we talked about our days and schedules. On this particular day, we talked about our future a lot. Sun Kissed Husband seemed nervous. More reflective but he also spoke of times to come. Our time to come. Together. Grow old together. That's when he said what had been really on his mind. A question. A simple, four-word question. Its answer changed the path of our lives forever. "Will you marry me?"

I remembered that it was 19 years ago when I said "YES"!

Pumpkin Carving

It's taken us a while this year to get on track of our yearly pumpkin carving. So much so that - dare I tell you? - I bought our pumpkins at the grocery store. Eek! Ok, there's really nothing wrong with that. The pumpkin picking in our house is a big production though. We go to the pumpkin patch and pick the pumpkins. There's fun activities for the boys to do and we make a day of it. So going to the grocery store (by myself, not even with the kids!) makes me feel a little guilty.

Finally, Sunday was carving day. Even though the littlest Sun Kissed Boy was feeling under the weather, he was sure not to miss daddy carving his pumpkin.

It's not just a jack-o-lantern face to be carved. Sun Kissed Boy #1 used my iPhone to pull up an image of exactly what he wanted in case daddy could not make out his drawing.

Getting the mush out is squishy fun!

I wanted to be in the pictures too but Sun Kissed Husband's hands were gooey & goopy. It's tricky to shoot a picture of yourself on manual mode with your arms stretched out. I could only get a little bit of me in. That's ok, at least I captured my good side. :)

The R, for Robin, was the invention of Sun Kissed Boy #3. Sun Kissed Boy #2 designed a nose-less jack-o-lantern face. Sun Kissed Boy #1 wanted a Batman logo. It's a little extra jagged at the bottom but he didn't seem to mind.

After looking through these pictures, I realized how silly it was of me to stress about the store-bought pumpkins. My boys would have enjoyed the pumpkin patch but the family time that we spent together carving is what stays in their heart. No matter where the pumpkins come from.

Candy & Mud, A Boy's Dream

My thoughts and prayers go out to the folks in the northeast where Hurricane Sandy is expected to make landfall. Stay safe.

Our Halloween decorations have been out for a little bit. This year the boys requested more ghoulish trinkets.

A skeleton and a spider here and there is all I'm willing to do for now. With the exception of a haunted house. A gingerbread haunted house, that is.

Friday was teacher's work day at the boys' school. Teacher's work days mean student play days. The boys had friends over that came with a surprise project. It was a very soggy day Friday so it worked out perfect to decorate a gingerbread cookie haunted house.

After they were done, there was only one problem. They were sugared-up! The timing worked because the rains ceased so outside they went.

To make sure they had used up all their energy, we headed to a nearby baseball field for more running. Cooper the dog came along for the trip. He stayed outside the baseball diamond though because it was very muddy.

And soon, so were the boys!

It took a good hose-down to get them cleaned up enough to come in the house. Then they were given strict orders to go straight to the bathtub and to NOT touch the white couches! Oh, but what fun they had!!

Soaking Them All In

There are times that I can stare at the boys for really long periods of time. Since they wouldn't sit long enough for me to do that, I've been having the lens soak in all the little details about them at this point in their lives that I don't ever want to forget. Things like these gorgeous lashes or that intense look.

The way the two littlest Sun Kissed Boys lovingly play with one another.

Even though it might be hard to believe, 10 years from this day, perhaps I won't remember the day that they both were loving on me.

The oldest Sun Kissed Boy is a daily reminder of how fast these times pass. He's only ten and almost looks like a teenager. However, having his lovey next to him is a clear indication that he's not.

I can't slow down the time. But I can freeze-frame their nooks and crannies or the precious moments with just a click or two or fifty.

The Mancave in the Fall

We use our family-friendly Mancave year-round. During the summer, there's lots of splashing, music, and grilling. In the fall, however, it takes on a different flavor. There's still lots of grilling but football takes over the television.

Even though the temps don't dip very low, the pool gets a lot less usage. We lounge around on the patio chairs and charge-up our electronics.

Costumes replace bathing suits, hats substitute swimming caps, and jazzy shoes cover up little bare feet.

Play guns take the place of pool noodles and a flower replaces a play gun in a duel?

Sure! Even cowboys have a soft side.

It's a different kind of time during the fall in the Mancave. One thing does stay the same - the fellowship. Close bonds still flourish no matter what the season.

When I cut out the mouth for the Pac Man toy, the boys pointed out how it looked like a pizza slice.

That gave me an idea that will help Sun Kissed Boy #2 with math and Sun Kissed Boy #3 with counting. Pepperoni pizza!

I had some leftover red fabric from the Captain Underpants costume I made a couple of years ago. I cut small circles to use for the "pepperoni".

Sun Kissed Boy #2 loves using the slices of pizza by adding and subtracting with the pepperoni.

On the other hand, Sun Kissed Boy #3 does not like that the flip side of each pepperoni has numbers. He's not a fan of academics.

After seeing his older brother adding with the pizza slices, Sun Kissed Boy #3 is warming up a little bit more to the counting idea. A little bit.
