Posted by Ciaran Dwyer, February 19th 2012;

With young kids, we tend to take a pragmatic laid-back approach about household cleanliness. If you even get the time to sporadically clean, it will quickly become untidy and dirty, so why bother?

You've probably heard about the automatic little sweepers and moppers available today. We received a gift of one from a family member who was probably tired of treading on a permanently dirty floor when visiting. Not so subtle a gift, but you can't argue with the practicality of it.

It functions with the aid of a GPS box. Now before you make assumptions, our home is modest and does not require a GPS to find your way around. The GPS does help our new rodent-like friend find his way around the floor plan. Notice, I did refer to it in the male gender, as from a young age my before-her-time-Irish-mother was over the top at ensuring I did my fair share of household chores on top of the many garden chores that my four sisters were spared from.

Enough of the self-pity and back to the mopping. It works with minimal effort on our part, although it takes about four times as long as the human version. Not dissimilar to its human counterpart, our little friend gets lost sometimes and appears to be driving around aimlessly. If we assume it's a she, then perhaps it's spending time chatting to the GPS and not as interested in following the directions. If it's a he, then there must be an egotistical and stubborn refusal ingrained to ask for directions. Regardless, after some awkward manuevers and changes in direction, he or she somehow gets the job done.

You have the love the American ability to take all the little inconveniences out of our daily lives. I've got to go away now and invent a device that potty trains kids in less than an hour. Just remember: there is technology for everything, but knowing which, when and where to use it is still the purview of us humans.

Is your technology strategy at a crossroads?

Posted by Ciaran Dwyer, February 4th, 2012;

In the vast majority of businesses, technology is now deeply ingrained in all operational functions and continues to increase in complexity. Ironically, advances such as virtualization make it more complex for small IT departments to manage and provide many of the benefits that are driving great efficiencies across public and private clouds. What are the implications for the IT decision maker?

In short, there are more choices than ever regarding IT functions and efficiency. You can keep the status quo with your own IT team and IT infrastructure, you can outsource it all to all sorts of providers, or you can settle somewhere in between. Savvy IT decision makers are focusing internal IT efforts on development and strategy to fuel growth, and leaving the infrastructure to trusted partners.

The deep recession and current slow growth economy has tightened the purse strings for the C-level executive. Unlike Fortune 500 companies, most businesses are not sitting on stockpiles of cash. They are eking out a profit and conserving the cash as a risk mitigation strategy. Outsourcing some of the expertise required in IT became an economic necessity for most businesses.

The pervasiveness of Internet connectivity, mobility and greater acceptance of remote access and security of your personal data has led to much greater acceptance of 'cloud computing' in the business world. Within ‘the cloud’ there are all kinds of flavors to choose from depending on your needs.

Confused? There is no need to rush a decision. Talk to your peers, research what's out there, test a number of different providers and make a decision after weighing the pros and cons. The best advice is to let your business needs, not your technology needs, drive your decision. Base your business decision on your reliability, flexibility and predictability needs.

Finally ask yourself if technology is a core competency for your business or a business enabler. If it's truly a core competency then keep the expertise in house. If it's an enabler that currently distracts you from focusing on your core business then move down the path of outsourcing. It’s likely your business is at a crossroad, not the technology.

Leading Means Leading Change

Our own Jan Rutherford, CCO of 3t Systems, recently published an article in the Watercooler Newsletter about leading change in the new year and beyond.

"It’s that time of year when everybody talks about making changes. All business leaders are facing the usual challenges – transforming cultures, creating better processes, setting shorter sales cycles. All change has one thing in common – whoever is leading it needs to gain acceptance and commitment from the team.
Leadership is nothing if not change. As leaders, we know that creating positive change starts within. I learned much of what I know about leading change while I was in the U.S. Army, from ages 17 to 26. I saw people who held impressive ranks, but that didn’t always correlate with effectively leading and managing change.
People in business may think leading in the military is simple – just give an order and people follow! But that really only happens in combat – just a small percentage of a soldier’s time. In business, people often follow repeatable policies and procedures that can be trained in a course. In the military, assignments are short, so you’re always doing something for the first time. In some ways, there is more change in the military than in the business world.
Becoming a leader who inspires change isn’t easy. Even in the military, leaders have to work hard to gain commitment and acceptance. A friend who is a retired two-star general says, “If I had to give an order, I knew I had already failed.” In other words, if a soldier did something because “I said so,” the leader hadn’t gained acceptance or commitment along the way.
To inspire people to change, leaders need to be willing to change their own way of doing things. What does long-term change mean for you? Chances are you’re comfortable. Change requires some degree of discomfort, but great achievements require great sacrifices.
Successful leaders have a passion, and they’re willing to sacrifice the status quo to fulfill it. Think hard about what “sacrifice” means. Now think about what sacrifice requires. It means giving something up so you can focus on something else. Leaders give their teams more and more to do, but they don’t tell people what to stop. Then they can’t figure out why so many change efforts fail. You yourself have to say “no” to some things, and that may be the hardest step of all.
A famous motivator, Charlie “Tremendous” Jones, once said, “You are the same today as you’ll be in five years except for two things – the books you read and the people you meet.” I’d add “and the sacrifices you make.” It would be pretty amazing if we all made a New Year’s resolution to sacrifice something so we could change something else – and inspire the will to change in others."

Greenwood Village, CO – January 16, 2012 – 3t Systems’ annual Client Satisfaction survey showed a record level of client support and confidence. In the recent survey, 95 percent of recipients responded positively to the ultimate client satisfaction question, "Would you recommend 3t Systems as an IT professional services firm to a colleague?"
Clients cite 3t Systems’ superb customer service as a standout, "Response is excellent and 3t staff always bends over backwards." Clients also stated that 3t Systems is a "strategic partner who understand the business and always looks for ways to provide solutions to business needs." 3t Systems maintains ongoing efforts to understand clients’ business needs through hosting quarterly events and an annual Leadership Summit in Vail, Colorado.
Reinforcing the high level of client satisfaction, 3t Systems again had double-digit growth in Managed Services revenue. Also noteworthy in 2011, 3t Systems hit record annual revenue for Citrix sales. As a 2011 Citrix Platinum Partner, this cements an already strong relationship and has created several new and exciting opportunities for 2012.

An Inspiring Breakfast with Dick Young

On December 7th, 2011, 3t Systems held our now quarterly Leadership Breakfast and invited you to discuss some current challenges in reducing distractors in your business. As a new employee of 3t (Hi, I'm Elyse in Marketing), it was really inspiring to attend such a positive and constructive event.

We invited Ret. Rear Admiral Dick Young to speak about some lessons learned from Pearl Harbor (in honor of the date) and how we can apply those lessons to improve our businesses. He spoke about how the lack of communication between departments lead to a slower response time in addressing the intelligence information that was coming in. At the time, the Army and Navy had a communication disconnect and were unable to react quickly to external threats.

It was really applicable to business in the sense that we need strong leadership and clear communication in order to be successful. Clearly defined leadership and good communication allows companies to be more adaptable in emerging markets. This trickles down to exceptional customer service, which we all thought was a big factor in our success.

The big takeaway for a IT newbie like me was learning how businesses are minimizing distractors by outsourcing tasks and projects outside of core competencies. This ties in with 3t's mission to give you the Freedom to Focus on your real priorities - your business.

Finally, Dick spoke about an organization near and dear to his heart - the Employer Support for the Guard & Reserve (www.ESGR.org). This organization helps returning veterans find civilian employment through training, networking and extensive employment resources. To hear him speak so passionately about our military and the struggles they face upon returning to this country was especially moving. We wish Dick all the success in his endeavors with ESGR - if you would like to get involved you can visit their website.

I look forward to many more constructive and interesting breakfasts with you all and happy holidays from everyone here at 3t!

American Cloud Services Company Partners with Maildistiller

3t Systems based in Greenwood Village, Colorado is the first North American MSP to reap the benefits of Maildistiller’s new MSP platform which combines purpose built cloud email security technology with a commercial model designed specifically to support the growing needs of MSPs, maximise recurring revenues and enable the creation of a Master MSP channel whereby MSPs can manage both channel partners and direct customers from one secure platform.
The Maildistiller console offers MSPs the ability to add and manage customers easily from one single secure login. Not only that, but with the Maildistiller MSP platform, MSPs are empowered to build their own channel as Master MSPs, enabling them to grow their business without limits due to its fully scalable design. The console is fully customisable to host partner’s logos, colors and branding with a complete white-labelled version also available. Maildistiller recently welcomed 3t Systems based in Denver, Colorado as their first North American Strategic partner to move to this exciting new MSP commercial model and Maildistiller CEO Colm McGoldrick spoke highly of the selected partnership.
“Our MSP Strategic Partner Program is a game changing way for select MSP’s to increase revenue based on actual usage across their entire user base as opposed to delivering solutions based on a per user licence cost. As Maildistiller has grown rapidly year over year, we needed to develop strategic partnerships with market leading MSP’s that complements our corporate growth. We’re excited to offer our Email cloud security and archiving solutions through an elite selection of MSP’s like 3t Systems and we welcome them as our first American Strategic Partner.”
3t Systems intend to fully exasperate the opportunity to build their own channel with Maildistiller’s unique offering by deploying the solution to both direct customers from their extensive customer base and channel partners, which will immediately expand their target market and enable them to further enhance their already impressive service portfolio in this competitive industry.
Santino Vialpando, Vice President, Managed Services at 3t Systems stated: “Maildistiller provides us with a centrally managed product which allows us to service our customers in a much more efficient manner. The products are clear and easy to understand for our customers and having the ability to scale up and down on a monthly basis is a great value.”
In order to offer their partners the greatest possible margins and maximise revenue potential, Maildistiller built their own email security solution from the ground up. The solution is cloud based and protects users with anti-spam, anti-virus and anti-malware technology as well as providing the email continuity and disaster recovery vital for business continuity. The company is continually on a development drive to ensure their partners receive the most advanced technology in cloud email security so that they can enhance their services portfolio and fully satisfy all their clients email security needs. The next development which is anxiously awaited by all Maildistiller partners is the release of Maildistiller Professional due in beta early 2012, which not only will include all current features, but will include our own purpose built search and discovery hosted 10-year email archive solution.
The strategic partnership between Maildistiller and 3t Systems marks the first milestone in the launch of the Maildistiller MSP Platform to the American market and with its unique MSP commercial model and channel building capabilities it appears to be just the solution required by proactive MSPs wanting to quickly grow their business and revenues in an increasingly competitive marketplace.

3t Systems Helps CTAP Thrive Despite Economic Climate

GREENWOOD VILLAGE, CO – Oct. 31, 2011 – As companies continue to navigate difficult economic times, some small businesses in Colorado are thriving. In 2008, Louisville-based CTAP, an Oil Country Tubular Goods pipe distribution company, opted to fully outsource their IT to 3t Systems instead of investing in their own IT infrastructure. Three years later, this business strategy has helped the company streamline operations, increase market share, double administrative and sales staff and aggressively plan for growth. Planning ahead, CTAP signed a three-year, half-million dollar deal with 3t Systems to increase managed services to support its 2012 expansion plans and business growth strategy.
Under the new managed services contract, CTAP will focus on three key business functions: 1) increased hosted services support, 2) ERP system implementation, and 3) continued proprietary application development. CTAP doubled its hosted services support to accommodate internal growth. In three years, CTAP grew from 30 to 60 licensed virtual desktop users and it has plans to add more staff in 2012 to accommodate business growth projections. The company also has plans to replace its existing accounting system with a new ERP system to improve workflow, centralize operation and management control and support strategic planning.
Of the three IT initiatives, perhaps the most exciting part is CTAP’s mission to introduce the oil and gas industry’s first mobile and searchable API Tubing and Casing properties reference guide. CTAP, in partnership with 3t Systems, is currently developing an iPad mobile application to replace the printed reference book petroleum engineers currently utilize. The new application will contain all of the information currently available in the reference book, giving engineers an easier way to look up variables, input specifications and sort information on the go. The application, titled CTAPp, will be available for free download on iTunes starting this November.
“We are extremely pleased with the value and service we have received from our managed services contract with 3t Systems,” said Andy Carlson, IT director at CTAP. “By out-sourcing IT to technology experts, we have the freedom to focus on our core business and the ability to respond immediately to market conditions. The energy sector can be volatile at times, and this flexibility allows us to scale up and down based on those conditions.”
Looking ahead, IT initiatives will continue to play a key role in supporting CTAP’s 2012 business strategy. The company is looking to expand beyond its Rocky Mountain region roots into other regions around the country with oil and gas play. IT efforts will also enable the company to continue streamlining operations to maximize efficiencies; make informed business decisions and remain competitive.

3t Systems held an Executive Leadership Summit in Vail on September 16th, and I knew we struck a chord with this gathering when I received a very nice thank you note from the spouse of one of our clients. We expect to make an impression on our client, but it’s even more exciting to know that we positively impacted their invited guest. That’s when you know you participated in something that had wider appeal with a different vibe!

By Mike McWilliams

Every employee has his or her own preferences when it comes to food, clothes, music and cars. Technology is no different. In the first quarter of 2011, Digital Trends ranked Apple iPhone 3GS, Samsung SCH-U450, Motorola Droid, RIM Blackberry 8500 series and Apple iPhone 4 as the top five brands among 230 million mobile phone users. Consumer Reports named Dell, HP, Sony and Compaq as the top 2011 laptop brands, with Apple in close contention.

Choices may abound, but personal preferences—such as ease of use, price, features and capabilities—influence a person’s selection. To date, people have had more control of their device selection at home than at work, but many companies are erasing the at-home/at-work technology barrier by allowing employees to select their own devices. The concept is called Bring Your Own Computer (BYOC).

BYOC is based on the idea that employees prefer to work on their personal device than on the device provided by their employer. More often than not, the one-shoe-fits-all approach to technology is unproductive. Employees spend countless hours learning how to use the device, troubleshooting and, in some cases, figuring out how to leverage the technology to handle their job requirements.

With BYOC, employees already are familiar with their personal device and know how to use its features and capabilities to the fullest extent—helping them be more effective, productive and engaged in their day-to-day work responsibilities.

Analysts forecast that during the next 10 years, IT consumerization (consumers influencing technology trends that drive change in the enterprise) is expected to force more change than any other trend. BYOC is one of those changes.

Setting up BYOC for Success
Given the proliferation of mobile consumer devices, companies must find ways to balance what employees and employers want in order to remain competitive, resilient and productive. Employees want simple access to their desktop applications from any device they choose, while employers need control over security, performance and user experience while minimizing IT support costs. Though BYOC may sound complicated to support, advance planning and preparation can ease the transition and help companies achieve that balance.

When implementing a BYOC program, as with any other company initiative, laying out expectations and guidelines ahead of time are the keys to success. From a business perspective, companies must consider the financial, legal and support elements of a BYOC program. On the technical side, IT and security teams must understand and implement a solution that adheres to existing policies and compliance requirements.

While many details must be taken into account, four key questions should be asked at the beginning of the process.

How much should be allocated to the employee stipend? Companies must take into account the work requirements and duties of their target BYOC users to estimate program funds. For example, look at job descriptions, travel schedules and computer usage to estimate what devices employees need and the expected costs. Do they need a laptop, tablet or smartphone? Is a warranty necessary? On average, companies that implement a BYOC program have reimbursement parameters ranging from $1,000 to $2,500 per employee.
Should there be an expiration term? On average, companies that offer a BYOC program are on a three-year device cycle. By implementing a program with an expiration date, employers have a designated time frame to evaluate the employee’s performance and determine if the program is a good fit. Additionally, the employee does not feel locked into the program and can easily opt out at the end of the term. By setting date parameters, employers make it clear that this is a benefit, not an entitlement.
Are all employees eligible for the program? In the construction industry, many employees are on their computers most of the work day. Managers need to determine if the program is going to be company-wide, in specific departments or only offered to certain employees.
How is security compliance maintained? Desktop virtualization, in which a personal computing environment is separated from the physical machine, is the best way to implement a BYOC program. This setup ensures no confidential documents reside on the physical machine so company information is not compromised if it gets lost, stolen or damaged.

Employer Benefits
By allowing employees to choose their preferred device and to access data from anywhere on any device, companies put the “personal” back into personal computing. This is a key advantage, particularly in today’s technologically savvy era.

While a BYOC program may be perceived primarily as an employee benefit, employers have a lot to gain as well, including improved company perception and employee satisfaction. Additional benefits include:

Reduced IT support costs. Supporting an employee’s computer requires money and time. BYOC can lower support costs, as employees log on with relatively simple devices they already know how to use, rather than with more complicated laptop computers that require patching and other maintenance. When employees purchase their own computers, it is their property and they are responsible if something happens to it. Instead of calling IT staff with computer issues, they call the manufacturer to troubleshoot, freeing up internal IT personnel to focus on revenue-generating projects. Additionally, companies no longer have to plan to purchase employee hardware. With a BYOC program, the company invests a small amount each time instead of shouldering a large capital expense.
Increased employee productivity and efficiency. Working on a machine that they understand allows employees to be more efficient and productive because they don’t have to struggle to learn a new device. With desktop virtualization and cloud technologies, employees can access data anywhere, anytime and from any device—giving them flexibility and giving employers a way to maximize employee productivity in and out of the office.
Improved device care. The construction industry is hard on its equipment. Mobile devices are sturdier and more robust than older technologies, but they still are fragile and can be damaged on jobsites. When someone spends money to buy something, particularly something they like, they tend to take better care of it. With a BYOC program, employees are more apt to buy protective gear for the device and be more careful with it, thereby reducing money spent on replacements and maximizing a device’s lifespan.

As the workplace strives to balance the needs of employees and employers, BYOC is a business-friendly program worth considering. Employees’ pursuit of a healthy work/life balance, coupled with their addiction to technology, is driving corporate innovation. Companies cannot afford to overlook this workplace shift and expect to remain competitive. By leveraging available technologies and best practices to support the needs of employees, companies can make BYOC a win-win proposition for the entire company.

3t Systems Inks Co-Sourcing IT Agreement with Mental Health Center of Denver
3t Systems Healthcare Solutions helps healthcare organizations leverage IT to boost the bottom line
The Mental Health Center of Denver (MHCD) and 3t Systems inked a three-year managed services, co-sourcing agreement to host MHCD’s business- critical IT operations at 3t Systems’ data center in Greenwood Village. With a new adult recovery center in development and efforts underway to consolidate community clinics and increase youth and family services, MHCD management decided to focus on primary business functions and co-source secondary functions, such as IT to 3t Systems. By selecting a co-sourcing model, MHCD reduced the upfront capital expenditures needed for their IT plans without downsizing the scope of their IT refresh. During the tenure of the contract, this partnership will help MHCD achieve significant savings.
With 3t Systems’ Trusted Hosting managed services solution; 3t Systems will co- manage MHCD’s daily IT operations and work with the MHCD IT team to identify new opportunities to leverage IT to improve operations. Using a private cloud environment, 3t Systems will provide hosting, storage, servers, backups, monitoring, management, updates, and patch management for one set monthly fee. Additionally, this solution will provide SAS 70-grade access to data for their mobile workforce and care providers and on-demand IT scalability to meet MHCD’s continued growth.
In 2010, MHCD provided community-based mental health services to 15,400 adults, children and families, up from 13,600 in 2009. Currently, MHCD manages more than 35 service locations, including out-patient clinics and residential facilities. MHCD also has therapists in 18 Denver Public School programs. The new building being completed for MHCD will be Denver’s landmark center for mental health services and will become the organization’s flagship adult services clinic by consolidating four smaller clinics in the surrounding community. The efficiencies resulting from the partnership, will help MHCD in providing needed services and focusing on their core business. The organization estimates the new building will help close the service-to-needs gap.

3t Systems Appoints Jan Rutherford to Chief Commercial Officer
With executive team now in place, 3t Systems is poised for strategic growth in key markets
Ciaran Dwyer, CEO at 3t Systems, announced that Jan Rutherford has joined the IT consulting firm as Chief Commercial Officer. In this newly created position, Rutherford will oversee regional and national sales and marketing efforts, focusing on designing and directing diverse communications programs to target the healthcare, construction, and finance industries. With over 20 years of leadership training, education and sales and marketing experience, Rutherford brings an impressive track record for helping companies and organizations strategically expand their market foothold through creative and innovative campaigns.
Rutherford’s appointment comes at a key juncture as 3t Systems prepares to expand service offerings, announce strategic partnerships and invest resources to build brand reputation. An accomplished speaker, educator, business mentor and entrepreneur, Rutherford’s diverse expertise and knowledge will prove invaluable as Dwyer and the executive team set 3t Systems’ future business direction. In 2011, primary objectives will include implementing an integrated sales and marketing approach, forging new business alliances, and developing new market strategies.
Prior to joining 3t Systems, Rutherford focused on training, educating, and helping others achieve their maximum potential both personally and professionally. Most recently, he was as an executive at MedKeeper, a healthcare software company, and an instructor at the Bard Center for Entrepreneurship at the University of Colorado. As the Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing at MedKeeper, he set the strategic direction for the company’s sales and marketing efforts. Throughout his career, he has also taught other leadership classes at the University of Denver and has been a leadership and motivational speaker at various national and international industry conferences.
“For the past 17 years, 3t Systems has grown solely on the merits of its solutions, partnerships and people,” said Dwyer. “However, we have reached a point where market potential is at its peak and strategic marketing and sales are essential. I am confident that with Jan at the helm, 3t Systems will become synonymous with IT excellence in healthcare, construction and finance.”
When Rutherford is not inspiring others in the classroom or office, he heads outdoors to get his own dose of inspiration hiking Colorado’s magnificent Rocky Mountains. Rutherford also serves as the Vice Chair, Board of Directors for the Visiting Nurse Association of Colorado, a nonprofit agency that provides home care, hospice at home, and wellness services across a 14-county area from Boulder south to Pueblo.

Two days after returning from ConExpo/ConAgg 2011 in Las Vegas my mind is still reeling with all the conversations and innovations at the show and the proof that the construction industry is starting to see the light at the end of this economic downturn. If you were able to attend this event I'm sure that you are feeling similar, and if you were not able to attend I'll try to describe the show.
