To optimize the live stream viewing experience on mobile devices and tablets, 3xScreen has launched adaptive multi-bitrate HTTP Live Streaming.
Scott Robinson, 3xScreen’s Managing Director said: “We served 5 million live streams in 2012 and saw viewing from iPhone, iPads and other mobile devices grow to as much as 40-50% of the audience for some events. We have always served multiple streams to PC viewers, but up until now, mobile viewers have been given just the one stream. Going forward, tablet and mobile viewers will be served an adaptive multi-bitrate HLS stream that is automatically tailored for them – from a low bitrate stream for those watching on 3G, all the way up to a HD stream for those connecting their iPad to their living room TV.”

A little bit of pre-Christmas fun at the 3xScreen studio…
We took a Parrot AR.Drone2.0 which has an integrated 720p camera – normally used for recording video.
We then used good ol’ reliable FFMPEG to grab the live video feed from the drone on Port 5555 using the command ffplay tcp://192.168.1.1:5555 and input the live video feed in to a LiveU LU40.
By bonding together four 3G/4G LTE mobile broadband circuits, the LU40 sent the live video from the drone to the 3xScreen studio where we encoded and published the live aerial video on YouTube Live.
Stay tuned – after our pre-Christmas live video drone fun with the Parrot, for our next live video drone iteration we will be mounting a LU40 on a professional Unmanned Aerial Vehicle.

With the addition of KA-SAT broadband satellite we can now broadcast live from rural locations where there is no 3G mobile coverage.
3xScreen’s HD Livepack service shrinks a satellite truck in to a backpack to uplink live HD broadcasts from anywhere with Satellite truck reliability but with backpack convenience and cost.
In our normal live production workflow, 3xScreen’s HD Livepacks bond together up to 7 mobile broadband circuits along with available WiFi and Ethernet links to transport a HD (or SD) SDI video connection to the 3xScreen studio where additional live broadcast effects such as tickers, overlays and transitions can be added and the final HD production live streamed to internet audiences.
To boost connectivity in rural areas throughout Europe, 3xScreen has added KA-SAT connectivity to our HD Livepack service – so we really can now literally broadcast live from anywhere.
3G + KA-SAT brings increased redundancy and throughput to our service. Where there is limited 3G coverage, we add a single KA-SAT portable terminal that provides an additional 6Gbps uplink bandwidth. Where there is absolutely no 3G coverage, we add two redundant KA-SAT terminals, each providing up to 6Gbps uplink throughput.

3xScreen estimates that more than a million fans watched the live stream of the world premiere of the final Harry Potter movie on 7 July 2011.
Thousands of fans were in London’s Trafalgar Square to see the premiere and live coverage of the premiere was also shown in cinemas across the UK and Europe and on UK television.
Online, the premiere marked an inflection point for the live streaming of movie premieres with Warner Brothers achieving stunning results by widely syndicating the live red carpet coverage to the major online live streaming destinations and other media sites.

Adding up the viewing figures on Livestream, UStream, YouTube and the other channels suggests that the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows London Premiere live stream would have been viewed by well over a million fans.

According to network monitor Sandvine, global internet video on the day of the wedding was up 26% compared to the Friday average – despite overall internet traffic being 10%, the -10% stat presumably being as a result of people who would normally be surfing the net instead tuning in to the wedding on TV

YouTube’s four hours of live coverage, which was derived from the BBC coverage, served 72 million live streams in 188 countries and 29 million on-demand streams

Akamai delivered in excess of 1.6 million live streams for their various clients who carried live coverage of the event

Live coverage on Livestream from the AP Live, ET Insider, Press Association and CBS News Livestream channels served 300,000+ concurrent viewers. Livestream expected more than 2 million unique viewers for the wedding

ITN, the UK television network, served 3.5 million streams on their website and Facebook page, topping out at 110,000 concurrent viewers

Leo Laporte’s Skypeasaurus was created to integrate non-studio guests in to Leo’s popular portfolio of Twit TV programs.

We’ve updated Leo’s Skypeasaurus set-up so it uses an all-SDI/HDMI, digital audio workflow to create our video call streaming solution.

3xScreen’s Video Call Streaming service professionally integrates remote presenters via Skype and other video calling solutions in to a Network TV-quality HD live streaming production.

We have worked through the details to ensure a quality production:

By leveraging Skype, remote presenters contribute using a service they are already familiar with – which means there is zero need to teach your old dogs new tricks

The program video and mix-minus audio is fed to Skype video call connected presenters so they always know what is being broadcast

Skype video call connected presenters also hear the 3xScreen Producer/Engineer overlaid on their mix-minus return feed so as to assist presentation coordination

The video/audio feeds from each presenter are managed as separate Skype calls so presenters can be added or reconnected at any time throughout the presentation without impacting other presenters

After Skype calls to each presenter are set up, presenters can privately coordinate what they will present whilst stream viewers watch an opening slate or other pre-event material

Presenters can be shown in full screen or as a branded mosaic with broadcast quality switcher effects, graphics and titles

Video clips, PowerPoint slides, images and websites can all be integrated in to the produced Video Call stream

Presentations can be recorded and replayed so viewers who miss the live presentation can view it in replay

Presentations can be integrated in to your own website or a specially-created branded site can be provided with an appropriate URL, visual identity and viewer registration system

Just the same as for 3xScreen’s HD Live Streaming service, presentations can be watched on iPhones, iPads and other mobile devices in addition to PCs.
