3xScreen estimates that more than a million fans watched the live stream of the world premiere of the final Harry Potter movie on 7 July 2011.

Thousands of fans were in London’s Trafalgar Square to see the premiere and live coverage of the premiere was also shown in cinemas across the UK and Europe and on UK television.

Online, the premiere marked an inflection point for the live streaming of movie premieres with Warner Brothers achieving stunning results by widely syndicating the live red carpet coverage to the major online live streaming destinations and other media sites.

Three hours into the live coverage, the Livestream Harry Potter channel was streaming to 24,000 concurrent viewers and delivered a total of 106,000 hours of online viewing for the event

the UStream channel was streaming to 12,000 concurrent viewers 3 hours in to the live program and delivered 369,000 total views for the event

The red carpet premiere live stream on the YouTube Harry Potter channel generated hundreds of thousands of new views on the day of the premiere

The 3 selectable camera coverage of the YouTube live stream (Main Show, Arrivals and Trafalgar Square) was also embedded on a number of other sites including The Telegraph, Metro and Sky Movies

All channels showed full replays of the event on their live streams at the completion of the program.

Adding up the viewing figures on Livestream, UStream, YouTube and the other channels suggests that the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows London Premiere live stream would have been viewed by well over a million fans.

Big Willy and Waity Katie’s Royal Rumble (sincerest apologies to all you monarchists out there) wasn’t just a big day for the newly weds.

The royal wedding was also huge for live streaming, despite it being a public holiday in the UK, before working hours in North America and after working hours in Australasia – which meant that viewers had the option to tune in their TVs rather than watch the live stream from their desk at work.

The following is a consolidation of royal wedding live streaming stats from a variety of sources:

According to network monitor Sandvine, global internet video on the day of the wedding was up 26% compared to the Friday average – despite overall internet traffic being 10%, the -10% stat presumably being as a result of people who would normally be surfing the net instead tuning in to the wedding on TV

YouTube’s four hours of live coverage, which was derived from the BBC coverage, served 72 million live streams in 188 countries and 29 million on-demand streams

Akamai delivered in excess of 1.6 million live streams for their various clients who carried live coverage of the event

Live coverage on Livestream from the AP Live, ET Insider, Press Association and CBS News Livestream channels served 300,000+ concurrent viewers. Livestream expected more than 2 million unique viewers for the wedding

ITN, the UK television network, served 3.5 million streams on their website and Facebook page, topping out at 110,000 concurrent viewers

Leo Laporte’s Skypeasaurus was created to integrate non-studio guests in to Leo’s popular portfolio of Twit TV programs.

We’ve updated Leo’s Skypeasaurus set-up so it uses an all-SDI/HDMI, digital audio workflow to create our video call streaming solution.

3xScreen’s Video Call Streaming service professionally integrates remote presenters via Skype and other video calling solutions in to a Network TV-quality HD live streaming production.

We have worked through the details to ensure a quality production:

By leveraging Skype, remote presenters contribute using a service they are already familiar with – which means there is zero need to teach your old dogs new tricks

The program video and mix-minus audio is fed to Skype video call connected presenters so they always know what is being broadcast

Skype video call connected presenters also hear the 3xScreen Producer/Engineer overlaid on their mix-minus return feed so as to assist presentation coordination

The video/audio feeds from each presenter are managed as separate Skype calls so presenters can be added or reconnected at any time throughout the presentation without impacting other presenters

After Skype calls to each presenter are set up, presenters can privately coordinate what they will present whilst stream viewers watch an opening slate or other pre-event material

Presenters can be shown in full screen or as a branded mosaic with broadcast quality switcher effects, graphics and titles

Video clips, PowerPoint slides, images and websites can all be integrated in to the produced Video Call stream

Presentations can be recorded and replayed so viewers who miss the live presentation can view it in replay

Presentations can be integrated in to your own website or a specially-created branded site can be provided with an appropriate URL, visual identity and viewer registration system

Just the same as for 3xScreen’s HD Live Streaming service, presentations can be watched on iPhones, iPads and other mobile devices in addition to PCs.

Content Delivery Network (CDN) charges are always an online video concern. Even when content delivery is a secondary cost driver, it is a variable that can only be predicted and one that increases with a video’s success.

CDNs generally charge a monthly fee and then some form of usage or overage component with the usage/overage being charged on a viewer hour or GB delivered basis. Viewer hours, which is the total time that a video has been watched (number of plays x average time watched each play or number of unique viewers x average time watched for each unique viewer) is the most human-understandable means of measuring a video’s consumption, but CDN providers sell delivery and most charge on the basis of GB (GigaBytes) delivered.

The formula for converting viewer hours to GB delivered is:

GB delivered / Viewer Hours delivered = kbps / 2330

… where kbps (kilobits per second) is the average streaming bit rate of the video and 2330 is a multiplier generated from converting seconds to hours and bits to bytes. (Note, the 2330 multiplier assumes kilo means 1024. Kilo is sometimes interpreted to mean 1000, if so, the multiplier should be 2386 – but the result will only be a little different).

To practically apply the formula: for a video that has been streamed at an average bitrate of 900kbps and has been watched by 10 people, each of whom have watched it for 10 minutes on average, the number of BigaBytes (GBs) delivered by the CDN is calculated by:

GB delivered = Viewer hours x kbps / 2330

= 10 people x 10 minutes/60 minutes x 900 kbps / 2330

= 0.64 GB

CDN charges vary dramatically depending on the volume of video generated. High volume CDN users typically pay $0.06 per GB or less for delivery by the leading CDNs whilst average volume users pay $0.25/GB or more. Second and third tier CDNs generally charge less.

For the above example and a CDN charge of $0.25/GB, the total delivery cost of the video would be 0.64 GB x $0.25/GB = $0.16
