To pay tribute to the legendary Ray Harryhausen’s remarkable achievements, Sony Movie Channel has revised its schedule to include a special TV marathon on Saturday, May 11, highlighting the filmmaker’s career. Harryhausen, who died recently at the age of 92, is renowned for his special effects innovations and as the inventor of stop-motion animation.

On Saturday, May 11, Sony Movie Channel will be airing the definitive Ray Harryhausen documentary, RAY HARRYHAUSEN: SPECIAL EFFECTS TITAN, at 12:45 p.m. ET/9:45 a.m. PT. Following the documentary, Harryhausen fans will enjoy watching three SINBAD-focused films featuring Harryhausen’s special effects animation from Sony Pictures Entertainment’s library – THE 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD (airs at 2:30 p.m. ET/11:30 a.m. PT); THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD (airs at 4:10 p.m. ET/1:10 PM PT) and SINBAD AND THE EYE OF THE TIGER (airs at 6:10 p.m. ET/3:10 p.m. PT).

Additionally, SMC is recognizing Harryhausen’s award-winning career online, presenting an interactive web experience that features Harryhausen’s signature creatures, as well as specially produced content honoring him and his impressive body of work. That web experience can be found here. Those who are SMC subscribers will be able to watch the documentary online through May 31 by accessing that same web page.

Last month Sony Movie Channel premiered the RAY HARRYHAUSEN: SPECIAL EFFECTS TITAN documentary on television for the first time in the U.S. The documentary, produced in 2011 by Frenetic Arts in Paris, marks the first time that the Ray and Diana Harryhausen Foundation has provided unprecedented access to all aspects of his award-winning career, spanning his early days in Hollywood to his 90th birthday celebration.

RAY HARRYHAUSEN: SPECIAL EFFECTS TITAN was filmed over a 10-year period and features interviews and tributes from an illustrious list of acclaimed filmmakers who were inspired by his work. Directed by Gilles Penso, the documentary includes interviews with longtime admirers and Harryhausen fans that have been involved in some of the film industry’s biggest blockbuster hits.

With 16 movies to his credit, Harryhausen is known for pioneering numerous new techniques during his acclaimed filmmaking career. Not only was he a leader in armatured models and miniatures, but he also created a new type of stop-motion split-screen animation, known as “Dynamation.” His special effects budget for THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS (1952) called for a more practical way of model interaction and, as such, Harryhausen developed a simple but effective method involving split-screens and a projector – hence, “Dynamation” was born.

In addition to innovating new filming practices, Harryhausen is credited with creating the physical looks and movements of dinosaurs, alien figures and creatures in motion pictures. Many producers and directors today still base their prehistoric creatures and beasts, as well as alien objects like flying saucers and visitors from other planets, on Harryhausen’s characters, models and drawings. His influence in genre filmmaking is still very prevalent today – over five decades later.

Sony Movie Channel is on Channel 563 on DIRECTV; Channel 386 on DISH and Channel 1791 on AT&T U-Verse.

Spoofing the best scene in American Psycho where Christian Bale, as Patrick Bateman, explains the excellence of a Huey Lewis and the News album to a man he is about to ax-murder all while listening to Lewis’ song Hip to Be Square, Huey Lewis murders Weird Al Yankovic in the same fashion while talking about the movie American Psycho.

It should be noted, and if you’ve ever listened to the 40oz. Of Horror Podcast you have probably noticed, that James Dunn and I have been life long fans of Huey Lewis and the News. So beyond the American Psycho connection, this video had to be posted on our site.

The album for which Bateman has such reverence is 1983′s Sports, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year —  Funny or Die have put together this killer tribute in honor of the record and for Yankovic’s new single I Want a New Duck, a parody of Lewis’ I Want a New Drug.

Just saying the title evokes passions from horror fans — the casual and diehard alike. So to announce they were going to “remake” this classic really put a burr in some people’s saddles.

Then we saw the trailer.

It had all the elements: the quick shots through the woods, the blood, Sam Raimiʼs ’73 Olds Delta 88, the blood, the Necronomicon, the blood, tree rape, more blood — did I mention the blood yet? Holy crap, that was a lot of damn blood. Some reports say it was 10,000 gallons of it. Pretty sure I saw 10,001. Oh, and also Sam Raimi and Bruce damn Campbell are producers!? How can we not love this!?

And donʼt worry if you havenʼt seen it — Iʼm not going to ruin anything for you. This is a review, not a spoiler.

Now, there a certain things that will take me out of a movie — poor visual effects being the most common, just in front of people using “555” in their phone numbers. Evil Dead pulled me in and never let me go. If youʼre a fan of great effects and gore, you will love this. No bad CGI, 100 percent practical effects all the way. And it shows. It’s done so well, the makeup and effects department SHOULD be nominated for — and win — the Academy Award. But we all know how those Hollywood types respond to horror movies.

Another thing that will remove me from a movie? Acting — or, I should say, the lack thereof. Again, Evil Dead comes through. Jane Levy is (to steal a Chad Butrum buzzword) phenomenal. The entire cast, for that matter, is excellent. And I think it helps having fairly new actors. Well, maybe new to me. I only knew one chick from Cloverfield, but even that didnʼt ruin anything for me. I felt the characters, and nothing was forced. They had very believable deliveries in the midst of, you know… the blood. Have I said that yet? Blood?

The dialogue was spot on as well. And I know that might sound weird, but think about it: How many times in a movie do you get annoyed when they bring up things that date it? Nobody mentioned Facebook or Twitter, no one was using an iPhone or iPad. Nothing to make you think, “Oh yeah, remember when?” Evil Dead has really made an effort to become another timeless classic. And in my opinion, it wins.

So, for whatever it counts — my rambling, that is — Iʼm gonna go ahead and give this a 10 out of 10. Perfection. Some may disagree. But, hey, that’s why the Internet exists.

Evil Dead: Stop what youʼre doing and go see it.

Surely you can understand my pessimism as James and I sat down for a screening of the remake of William Lustig’s 1980 cult masterpiece Maniac.  My pessimism quickly turned to excitement almost immediately. The opening scene, which would make Dario Argento proud, set the tone right away and settled any hesitation I had.

The first thing I noticed was the Score. A lot of people may not put a lot of stock in movie scores, but often it can make or break a movie. It was contemporary, yet had that nostalgic, 80’s electronic feel that will give classic slasher fans the warm & fuzzies.  Not just the score, but everything about this movie just felt right. Even the small things such as the graphics of the opening title sequence and the atmosphere had that dirty New York City feel, ala the original Maniac or Basketcase.

And the acting was spot on.

I was one of the many who questioned the casting of Elijah Wood in the lead role of Frank.  I mean, could Frodo be taken seriously as a sociopathic serial killer?  The answer is an astounding YES.

Wood virtually carried the entire film on his back, while the whole time you’re seeing things from his point of view. When first hearing about the first person perspective aspect of the movie, I was a little nervous. However, I now feel that it made the movie that much better. You see everything how Frank sees it — which really pulls you into the story.  Even when he is having his anxiety attacks, as a viewer, you begin to feel a bit anxious yourself. And I’d like to think it’s a wink at Argento films where you just see the killer’s hands —  just one example of the many homages to old school horror, even a few to the original film.

Maniac was more of an update than a remake and it was done right. It wasn’t so much of a remake that it didn’t relate to the original story, but it wasn’t so little of a remake that it didn’t update the story at all. It was the perfect mix, which is how a remake should be.

Maniac is one of the good ones folks…. Dare I say the best remake since 2004’s Dawn of the Dead?  Or even better?  That’s for you to decide, but don’t miss out on this flick.  It’s one of the few that keeps the hopes for the future of horror alive.

He will probably wander off and die in the woods or end up getting most of the group killed. He’ll more than likely end up looking like that special guy from Something About Mary — grown up, neglected, with PTSD, not being able to speak right, still wearing his kids’ Elmo shirt that has now become a midrift belly shirt. Watch out though. Trying to take his shirt off will only enrage him allowing him to show you first hand why they call it “retarded strong,” or he’ll end up in a mastabatory rage. Regardless, he’s your damn kid. You deal with him.

The screenwriters immediately threw all rules we’ve ever known of zombie lore right out the window (I attempted to keep a running tally of broken zombie rules, but I couldn’t keep up.) Now if you can get past that and put yourself in the mind of a 14 year old girl with posters of Robert Pattenson and One Direction on her wall, then you may be able to enjoy the film. It was as if Stephenie Meyer (author of the Twilight novels) ATTEMPTED to channel John Hughes and TRIED to write a zombie love story.

A poor attempt.

I should say that the film is based on a novel of the same name, written by Isaac Marion — I know nothing of the book — I can’t really draw any comparisons. The book could be good for all I know. If you could take the zombie aspect out of the movie, it would be another teenage romantic “comedy.” But alas, it was a “zombie movie,” so it was another teenage romantic comedy that is trying to take advantage of the current popularity of the undead.

If I took one thing from Warm Bodies, it’s that love and acceptance conquers all… ugh, I need a few beers and viewing of a Stallone movie to retrieve my manhood.

Like I said, it wasn’t a bad movie. It is, however, a BAD horror movie and a BAD zombie movie and there’s definitely an audience that will enjoy it, but it just wasn’t me and, probably, not any of the 40oz. of Horror loyalists. The zombie culture was already becoming over-saturated, which happens to everything as it becomes more mainstream.

Let’s just hope that Warm Bodies isn’t a sign of the beginning of the end.

Warm Bodies, directed by Jonathan Levine and starring Analeigh Tipton, Teresa Palmer, John Malkovich, Nicholas Hoult, and Lizzy Caplan, in theaters everywhere Friday, Feb 1.

Let me say this… Schwarzenegger is back!

The Last Stand is directed by the mastermind behind 2011′s I Saw the Devil, Kim Jee-Woon (There’s your horror connection) and he pulls no punches. Arnold couldn’t have been aligned with a better helmer to handle his comeback as a lead. Schwartzenegger is old and he knows it. There’s plenty of good natured nods towards it and none of his action scenes are too over-the-top or cheesy.  It’s obvious that he’s a tad rusty and some of his lines are a bit off, but really, probably due to his accent, all his movies are kind of like that.

The Last Stand is a classic shoot’em up, car chase, fist fight that Arnold’s always been known for. There’s plenty of action and violence with a surprisingly decent amount of blood. Even the comedy is well placed and not too cheesy.  Johnny Knoxville plays the town goofball / gun nut and is the obvious comic relief, to which he plays the role well.  Some people may not like him much as an actor, but I’ve always  found is roles pretty hilarious.

And then there’s the car… This may be just for the guys, but the car is awesome. A stealthy, suped up, Corvette ZR1, that the escaped bad guy is driving from LA to the Mexican border, right through Sheriff Arnold’s town. So, naturally there is going to be a car chase, which is done really well and kind of an homage to the classic car chase movies of the ’70s. Don’t worry, Arnold gets himself some drive time, as well, when he lands himself a Camaro ZL1.

So, if you like this action sort of stuff, do yourself a favor and go see The Last Stand. We don’t get good fun movies like this very often.

What could be better?

I’ll tell you what, The Collection! I think this was one of the best horror sequels to be made in recent years. The movie starts with the victim from the first film, Josh Stewart reprising his role as Arkin, escaping the clutches of the terrifying killer, only to be faced with the task of going back in an attempt to kill the fucker who tortured him.

The Collection has a good story and a lot of killing. The first few minutes alone became one of the largest death scenes I have ever witnessed—almost like the beginning of Ghost Ship (2002). That is a pretty big death total! The only thing that I saw as a negative is that it slowly started to get stale 3/4 of the way through.

One could criticize every little thing in a horror film and those people are douchebags. This film was great and it was done very well. The ending was not expected, but it was fucking awesome! I true must see from Tom H.

Originality rating: 7 out of 10
Scare rating: 4 out of 10

40oz. of Horror Hot Toddy

Ingredients:
2 oz. Wild Turkey Special Reserve
1 or 2 tea bags (black tea)
1 Tbsp honey
1 slice of lemon
1 cup of hot water
1 cinnamon stick

Directions:
Make like your grandma and boil some water in a tea kettle. When the whistle’s a blowin’ the water’s ready for flowin’ — so pour the hot water into a good sized coffee mug. That’s right, we’re drinking this booze-ooze out of a mug like a 1950s high school principal. Now take your tea bags and tea-bag that water until it’s good and brown. Be careful with this step because this tea is as hot as a freshly-baked Totino’s Pizza Roll. Dump in the Wild Turkey Special Reserve and the rest of your ingredients. Give it a slow stir with a cinnamon stick and garnish the rim with a slice of lemon. Sip slowly on a cold winter’s night and this drink will cure what ails ya!

If you’re feeling especially festive, finish this tea with clove *cigarette.

Drunken Elf Eggnog

Ingredients:
2 oz. Courvoisier Cognac
5 oz. eggnog
Ground cinnamon
Ground nutmeg

Directions:
Typical holiday spiked eggnog calls for any run-of-the-mill brandy, but up in here, we’re taking a page out of The Ladies’ Man playbook and using Courvoisier Cognac! Other than using some fine cognac, toss any notion of classy out the fucking window and fill up a Moose Mug with eggnog. Slurp the top of the eggnog down to make room for the ‘gnac. Open the bottle of Courvoisier and take a good whiff — savor that shit (because it smells awesome) — then pour it into the eggnog. Give the Moose Mug a little swirl, then add a couple dashes of cinnamon and nutmeg. Drink it down, Cousin Eddie, because it’s Christmas!

Hit the Floor Hot Chocolate

Ingredients:
1 can of alcohol-infused whipped cream
32 oz. instant hot chocolate
6 oz. peppermint schnapps
Bacardi 151 cherries
Chocolate sprinkles

Directions:
2 – 5 days before you plan on serving this cocktail, put cherries in a jar and fill up the jar with Bacardi 151. Seal up the jar and put it in your refrigerator. Make your instant hot chocolate according to the directions on the package. Give a little to your kids and tell them to go to bed or else Santa’s going to skip your house. Now take the rest and add your favorite brand of peppermint schnapps. Give it a stir and top it off with a healthy squirt of loaded whipped cream. For a real kick in the pants, top the cream with a Bacardi 151 cherry. If you’re feeling like Martha Stewart, grate some chocolate dust or add some chocolate sprinkles on top. If you’re enjoying this drink at a frat party, dare all your bros to take shots of the remaining Bacardi 151 cherry juice.

(serves about 4 people… or yourself depending on how bad/good your night is.)

In a nod to Robert Kirkman’s original books, the network plans to air seasons 1 and 2 of The Walking Dead in black and white. AMC previously aired a black and white version of the first episode, “Days Gone Bye,” over the summer.

Glen Mazzara announced the B&W special by retweeting a clip from The Walking Dead Magazine. The first two episodes of the series will air on Thursday, February 14 starting at 6:30 p.m. The following dates and times are for the first 12 episodes.

While the content of the episodes won’t change, the black and white conversion might offer a different perspective for fans. I liked the special version of “Days Gone Bye,” but I’m not sure what to think about having this many episodes with the new color treatment.
