A heavier variation of the Valkyrie has been released. The new Imperial Valkyrie Skytalon is designed to carry the Taurus Venator deep behind the enemy’s ranks. It’s heavier build allows for rugged magnetic clamps and fuel tanks which allow for longer operations. This lovely beast is mounted with heavy bolter and a choice between hellstike missiles and missile pods.

This is certainly a great looking model that Forge World has unleashed upon us! I just love those 2 big jet engines, those wheels and suspension, and of course all that gorgeous weaponry!  It’s certainly a great 40k model, although I don’t think much of the paint scheme used for it. That whole air paint gun thing is a bit too crude… but hey we can all paint ours the way we like right?

The Imperial Valkyrie costs £50 (about $75) and comes in a resin/plastic kit, along with a base, Hellstrike missiles and rocket pods. Its rules are included with the upcoming Imperial Armour 8.

Let’s face it, Warhammer 40k turns us pretty much into power freaks. Speaking for myself, while having fun and enjoying the game are pretty important, the most important thing is to utterly crush my opponent. If any of us power-crazed, crazed 40k players became Emperors of the World (or big bosses or whatever), these are the ways we’d probably manage to destroy civilization:

We’d probably forcibly recruit every young able man and woman to fight against our enemies.

Anybody vaguely creative or imaginative would probably be called a psyker and eradicated in one way or another.

If a Slaneesh player ruled the world, we’d all probably get orgied to death. Same goes for Dark Eldar players, though those who didn’t get snoo snooed to death would be sacrificed anyway.

We’d turn the Earth into a huge industrial complex. Environmental protection? Only after we destroy those tyranids!

We’d probably piss off every extraterrestial civilization within thousands of light years.

Finally, the Eye of Terror would open much closer to San Fernando Valley.

2010 brings a bunch of new events for all you 40k fans (and fantasy).  Currently, Games Workshop is strongly promoting its Warhammer Hobby Camps which will be taking place throughout the year.

A pretty awesome time to be had by all.

The aim of these 5-day camps is for gamers to meet up and assemble, paint and game with a new army or force with and against like-minded hobbyists. Participants are set to learn new skills, strategies and techniques  in assembling, painting and using their miniatures. Coaches will be present throughout the course of the camp to help out everybody. All the tools, paints, brushes and other equipment will be provided.

These events will be taking place at Games Workshop’s hometown, Nottingham, England, at Warhammer World. Both Warhammer Fantasy and 40k are supported at these Hobby Camps.

The whole concept sounds like a good deal of fun. Going away for 5 days with like-minded gamers, starting your dream army from scratch and having help at hand to build, paint and use it to the highest standards sounds like a pretty good time to me.

The cost of a single Hobby Camp ticket is £186 (roughly $290). This might seem expensive, but you get a lot of good stuff for the price:

1. A Warhammer battalion or a Warhammer 40,000 Battleforce .
2. A large army carry case to carry all of your new force in.
3. A fully cooked lunch (+ drink and dessert) each of the five days of the camp.
4. A scenery lesson on the Warhammer World Hobby bar.
5. 5 days of hobby activity, including modelling, painting and gaming with a fellow hobbyists.
6. Expert supervision by a team of Hobby Camp Coaches.

The dates for the Warhammer Hobby Camps in 2010 are the following:

• 29th March to 2nd April
• 5th to 9th April
• 26th to 30th July
• 2nd to 6th August
• 9th to 13th August
• 16th to 20th August
• 23rd to 27th August
• 20th to 24th December

Most of you come here having a good idea of what Warhammer is. Many are frequent or occasional players who know what I’m talking about. However, there are others who are still trying to understand what Warhammer (or for that matter, tabletop gaming) is. I started working on this a couple of months ago just to help out you who are still walking across uncharted territories; a short guide introducing Warhammer 40k (and which will help you understand table-top wargames in general hopefully). I present to you Part One of the Warhammer 40K Beginner’s Guide.

This guide isn’t meant to be exhaustive or extremely detailed. It’s not a rulebook, it’s not supposed to turn you into a pro. What it should do is to give you an overall understanding of the Warhammer 40K game; The aims of the game, the general structure and mechanics (basic army structure, turns, movement, measuring, and so on), a description of the various races and forces available to the player, and how, where, and with what the interested beginning player can get started. Basically I just want you to read this and be able to understand what the hell those 40k (and even Warhammer fantasy) gamers are talking about, so that your shift from total newbie to actual player is somewhat smoother.

The upcoming movie by Games Workshop, Ultramarines, is going to utilise face-animation technology from Image Metrics, a company which has worked on projects such as Grand Theft Auto IV, Assassin’s Creed® II, and the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix movie. Their technology captures facial features and their movements in very great detail, allowing for great realism in animated characters.

I just ran across a small, home-based, Canadian miniatures designing company called Ultraforge Miniatures that makes some really good looking miniatures – including some great (and perhaps better) alternatives to the Forge World Greater Daemon range. There are also several good models which could be used for Warhammer Fantasy.

The company is run by Canadians Sophia and Jeremy, and is certainly something to look out for in the future.

Forge World just released a new Warhammer 40k resin kit for a 6-wheeler rapid strike and scouting vehicle. This craft is heavily armed useful for rapid reconnaissance and quick raids.

The body is by Will Hayes, while the crew is designed by Simon Egan. Everything is resin, and the model can be either equipped with a twin-linked lascannon or twin-linked multi laser. Hunter -killer missiles are also available.

A really good looking model and a totally new one for the Imperial Guard/ Elysian line. Rules will be available on the upcoming ” Imperial Armour: Volume 8″. Forge World said they’ll also have some experimental rules for download in the near future. Keep updated here.

The model is available for pre-ordering now, and will be posted on the week starting on the 25th Jan 2010.
