According to the report:

“Based on the currently available scientific data, it is reasonable to think that cannabis might significantly slow the progression of ALS, potentially extending life expectancy and substantially reducing the overall burden of the disease.”
Beyond this, I found it interesting that the paper is also quoted saying, "From a pharmacological perspective, cannabis is remarkably safe with realistically no possibility of overdose or frank physical addiction." Which is basically what us in the end prohibition movment have been saying for years.

Montana Newspaper Helps Arsons Find Suitable Targets

Ok I am not one for censorship, my faithful readers (both of you) know this. That being said The Billings Gazette should be ashamed, and should face prosecution for reckless endangerment. On May 10th it was reported that two building which housed medical marijuana dispensaries were firebombed by arsonists and "Not in our town" was spray painted on the windows and doors. So what does the local rag say about the incident, oh sure they report it with the integrity of any other newspaper, but then they go and post a detailed map of every medical dispensary in the region, and worse still they include anyone who has applied for a license to become a dispensary.

I came across this article at our THE Weed Blog, and at first I assumed they were exaggerating, I assure you they were not. Two days after reporting the firebombing the Billings Gazette posted the map knowing full well that someone was targeting these businesses. Sure it can be argued that everything is public domain anyways and the arsonists probably have the list anyways, but seriously, why make it easier?

Did they do anything outright illegal, well depends how you look at it. Did they violate any laws that normally govern newspapers such as publishing private information, copyright infringement, libel, or defamation? No, they didn't however they did put every single person who owned, or applied for a license to run a medical marijuana dispensary, and every employee of a dispensary directly in harms way. This clearly falls under Reckless Endangerment, which in the United states can be a misdemeanor or a felony. In my opinion the paper should be charged with the crime and forced to face the consequences.

Now I am sure the paper will claim (and it would probably be true) that the map had been planned and in the works BEFORE the firebombing. This does not excuse the paper for the crime however, because instead of considering the harm that the map could cause based on the fact that someone was targeting these businesses and stopping the publication of the map they went ahead with it. In reckless endangerment cases intent is not needed, in face the reckless pretty much says "Ok we know you didn't intend to harm anyone, you just didn't care". The fact that no new firebombings have happened since doesn't let them off the hook either, at least not in my books. Just because the terrorists responsible for the firebombings haven't used the information yet doesn't mean they won't, and even if they get caught or if they never bomb another building, the information was still provided for them.

For point of reference I did not link to the Billings Gazette for the simple reason I don't want to drive traffic to their criminal organization. If you feel the need to verify, it is easy enough to do, it took me less then five minutes to verify THE weed blogs' claims.

Marc Goes To Jail

So the government is finally allowing the US to extradite Emery. Sure pot activists are protesting, but its too late for Marc really, he will stand trial.

Now I know, those who read my blog, are probably all for Emery being released, and probably are already doing something to do so. But for those few of you out there who aren't doing anything yet I urge you to take a stand. Cry out for justice.

Is Marc guilty, well quite frankly sure he is. While normally you wouldn't find me arguing for the release of a guilty man, even if I think the crime should not be a crime. The issue I have is that the Canadian government should have refused to extradite Emery. Under the terms of the the Extradition Treaty we have the the United States, the U.S. must meet certain guidelines in order for extradition to be granted, the fact is Marc's case does not fit these guidelines.

In earlier posts I mentioned that really all Canada had to do was charge Emery with the crime give him a slap on the wrist as is standard punishment here, and send him on his way. This would mean that the U.S. could not legally charge Marc with a crime for which he already served time. However this wouldn't really work if the U.S. Government demanded that Emery serve time under the U.S. Judicial system while sentencing was still being carried out.

As I stated earlier Marc's case does not fit the extradition guidelines under the treaty between Canada and the United States of America. The reasons for this are; the arrest is politically motivated, this can be ignored if the crime is violent in nature, but as of yet no one is claiming Marc is a violent offender; the second reason is that in order for an extradition to be carried out the charge must be reviewed to see if it would stick in Canada, since Mr. Emery committed the crimes here in Canada and Canada has refused to charge him then it is apparent, to me at least, that the charges are not sufficient enough to warrant an extradition order.

So what can you do to help free Marc Emery? Go to http://www.cannabisculture.com/v2/articles/4639.html they give you some useful tips.
Well the reason for my absence was due to an acute gout flare up that kept me from work, well to be honest it kept me from even standing. But it did give me a unique opportunity to test out the pain killer effects of our friend Mary Jane.

Now my experiences are far from a scientific study, and I did not try tinkering with the dose to get different results, nor did I even attempt it even more than once. In short my experience was a failure. Personally I won't be using pot to deal with gout flare up again.

Gout is an arthritic condition in which uric acid crystals form in the joints and cause the joint to become inflamed. Essentially it feels as if there are a million microscopic knives in your joint. To say it is painful is like saying the surface of the sun is a little warm. During the worst of the flare up a slight breeze would be enough to cause excruciating pain.

Knowing that marijuana is supposed to be an excellent pain killer I decided to try it to see if it helped. In this one case it did not help. For those of you who smoke you will understand why I say it did not help in a moment. Often smoking marijuana causes you to feel everything around you with acute intensity, and unfortunately that is what happened to me when I tried to treat my gout pain with weed. I could feel my skin stretching from the swelling of the affected joints, it felt as though each cell was being torn to pieces extremely slowly. When I put any sort of weight on an affected joint I felt as though I could feel each individual tear as the sharp bastard uric acid crystals tore away at the flesh. Instead of dulling the pain it made it possible for me to focus intently on every single aspect of the pain.

Looking back I probably needed to increase the dose, that being said, I am not willing to risk experiencing that again.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper Caught Sparking Up

According to the Ottawa Citizen Prime Minister Stephen Harper was arrested last night after a routine traffic stop. During the stop the officer suspected Harper of being under the influence of alcohol, but during a roadside sobriety test it Harper was adamant that he had not had any alcohol but admitted to smoking a joint with Minister of Finance Jim Flaherty in his office before driving home.

We here at Make Marijuana Legal Blog are appauled that our Prime Minister would take such a cavalier attitude towards a controled substance with obvious dangers.

Recommended Reading List

Being an avid reader I thought I'd start a new segment on this blog to recommend various books on marijuana for reading. These would be books recommended to me by others, some I have read some I have not. If you have a book you wish to recommend please feel free to send me an email or make a comment.

Here is my recommendation today:

Mom's Marijuana: Life, Love, and Beeting the Odds is the tale of one mans battle against hodgkin's disease. While it is not particularly relevant to the legalization movement, in fact the author barely touches on the subject, however it is an inspiring tale of a man battling a very deadly foe, and winning. It may seem a little odd to be recommending this book here on this blog, however it seems very relevant in my mind.

Google Adsense

I have some ads on this blog, I am sure you noticed. It's to help fund me keeping this site up, I don't mind admitting I prefer to get paid for my writing on here, I'd love it if blogging became my full time job, but a) I am just not that willing to pimp myself, and b) I like my blogs to have actual information not 98% ads.

I have never found the ads intrusive or that far off topic, so I have never had a reason to question the need for ads. However after writing my latest entry I found something beyond funny. There was an add for www.drugfreeworld.org with a looped image saying "they said marijuana wouldn't lead to harder drugs" then a pause followed by a new screen saying "THEY LIED!". I found the ad so funny I had to go to the site and take a look. I ordered one of their pamphlets. We shall see if its all its cracked up to be. Based on the ad I think it should be amusing. Stay tuned, I will post the details.

Grow ops reaching epidemic

CP24's website posted this amusing article a while back that I have been meaning to address. Apparently Canada has earned the title of "source country" for marijuana. Well duh, no kidding. OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino buys into the US's fanatical approach to drugs stating that "It's a black eye on Canada when you have the United States... refer to us as a source country of marijuana." Well, in response to Commissioner Fantino I say, its a black eye on this country when you have the cops arresting people for using a drug which has less negative long term effects than a diet high in fat.

Fantino is apparently most alarmed at the continued increase of organized crime involved in marijuana production and distribution. "Organized crime will use whoever and will do whatever (to) achieve their goals and objectives, which is to make these obscene profits illegally." Finally this cop says something I can agree with. Organized crime is a bad thing, that gangs continue to profit from marijuana is a bad thing, that violence is used to protect their profits is a bad thing. What I disagree with is Fantino's solution. Fantino want's tougher drug laws in Canada, and he has a hard on for US style war on drugs despite knowing that the war cannot be won.

So who the hell wants to fight a war that cannot be won? Why would Fantino buy into this madness. Why won't he bother to examine the facts. Sure marijuana trade can be one wrought with violence and criminal activity, you know how to solve this, change the law and legalize it.

I know, I know, I have said this a thousand times on this blog but its simple. To take the power out of the hands of organized crime you MUST put them in the hands of someone else. Marijuana use is not going away plain and simple, its not particularly dangerous, so why not just call a cease fire on the users and make it legal and make a regulated distribution system to take the power from the hands of the gangs and put it into the hands of ordinarily law abiding, tax paying citizens? What is the use in persecuting so many people for using a drug that the vast majority of us have at least tried.

Are the gangs going to vanish? No of course not, they will shift to other drugs, but at least cops can focus on what's important and arrest the right people. History has proven again and again that prohibition simply does not work.

Best of Luck to Ganga Gourmet

According to CBS4 in Denver a medicinal marijuana dispensary opened with a twist. Her son was losing weight and they could not get him to eat, he was violent and a danger to himself and everyone around him. Marijuana calmed him down and made him want to eat again.

I highly recommend everyone read the article. For an American news program it is surprisingly well balanced, despite some factual errors.

Factual errors:

Statement:

"It can cause psychosis, may lead to schizophrenia."

Truth:

There has been no studies that found any causality links between either psychotic episodes nor schizophrenia and marijuana.

Statement:

"And while marijuana may be available in pill form"

Truth:

THC is available in pill form marketed under names such as marinol, however this is not the same as marijuana. While they did point out this later on in the article to some extent I still felt it was misrepresented as THC does not equal marijuana, THC is just one of the active ingredients of marijuana. And a point they did miss out was the dose of THC is not as easy to control with marinol since each pill is considerably higher dose than you would normally get with a single joint or some pot brownies.

In Good Company - William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare, THE Bard, the best known english language poet period. Arguably one of the best fiction writers of all time, but certainly one of the most unique writers of history. His works consist of 38 plays, 154 sonets, 2 long narrative poems, and more.* I don't think there is a need to go into the history of William Shakespeare, his plays are required reading at most schools in a variety of levels.

I myself am a huge fan of the works of Shakespeare. Richard III was the first play I ever saw of his, and I was hooked. Throughout my life I have seen many of his plays and I have loved them all, with the exception of an adaptation of Macbeth put on in London Ontario which for some inexplicable reason had all the characters dressed as if they were fighting in WWI.

In addition to his plays and poetry Shakespeare is a wordsmith in another way as well, an entirely literal way. The english language is an ever changing, and the language we speak now has nothing to do with the old or even middle english. The fact that it is constantly growing, changing, and evolving is a good thing, it means it is a living language instead of a dead and stagnant one. The more people speak a language the more they invent colloquialisms and slang, as colloquialisms and/or slang becomes more common the more likely it is to be adopted into formal speech and thus become legitimate words. People invent words all the time, and writers are particularly adept at this. Shakespeare was definitely no slouch in this regard. Depending on who you talk to he coined between 1,700 and 8,000 words. Imagine a world where words such as accommodation, aerial, amazement, assassination, bump, critic, gnarled, hurry, generous, majestic, inauspicious, road, sanctimonious, pious, and many more weren't part of our vocabulary. **

In other words Shakespeare was a genius in his own right. But was he a pot head?

Well, this is hard to ascertain. Marijuana, cocaine, opium, and many other narcotics were available in his time, and they were commonly used, although rarely recreationally. Marijuana was known throughout the ages, including Shakespeare's time as a medicinal herb and was often prescribed for a wide variety of ailments, Shakespeare's son in-law was a physician and would thus have extensive knowledge of the benefits of marijuana and it is likely that this knowledge would have been readily available to Shakespeare. Critics will argue that Pope Innocent VIII banned cannabis 80 years before the Bards birth, however, much like today, pronouncements in this regard were often ignored, and various medical texts from the time still listed cannabis as a viable herbal remedy for many ailments.

Sure this evidence is specious at best, but surely you don't think I'd leave it at that do you? Ok lets get onto the REAL evidence shall we. Dozens of clay pipes were discovered in the garden of Shakespeare's land and date to the time Shakespeare lived, it is possible they were not his, but it is rather likely they were. Sure, clay pipes alone aren't proof enough, but gas spectrometer tests demonstrate that the contents of these pipes were a variety of substances, several containing traces of cocaine, and at least one containing clear traces of marijuana. These pipes were packed with dirt from the garden when they were tossed aside protecting them from modern contaminants.***

*source Wikipedia

** source No Sweat Shakespeare

*** source CNN

Best Halloween Costume Evah!

Ok I agree, I sound so insincere when I say "evah" I promise not to use it again. So why then am I writing an article that slams the Marijuana Party, simply put they can never and will never achieve their goals, at best they will assist others in achieving it.

Most critics of the marijuana party claim they are a one trick pony and have no platform other than the legalization of marijuana, and while this may be true in some ridings, for the most part this is not true. I have spoken with various candidates for the marijuana party, they are always intelligent, articulate, and politically aware beyond just the marijuana issue. Really they should be the the ones to take the fight to Ottawa, but they won't, not as long as they are members of the Marijuana Party. As long as the Marijauna party remains as it is they will never become a political player, and unfortunately thats the way the party seems to want it. They think its a good thing that the are a party they are decentralized, it is not.

In order for a party to bring forward marijuana two things must occur, they must be centralized, organized, and act like a political party, and the second thing (oh so simple) have a name that does not pick on any one specific issue.

Beyond the Marijuana party being a disorganized brood of smaller political riding association based parties the very name takes the power out of the party. People see the name and think of the Marijuana party and its members as a one trick pony, they want legalization of marijuana and nothing else. It doesn't matter how wonderfully written the platform of an individual candidate is, the party will drag that candidate down.

What Canada needs is more political activists that actually get involved in politics. We need people to join parties, change views become candidates and work the system within. We need serious candidates in serious parties to bring forth the matter of legalizing marijuana and changing all the laws in Canada that have no logical purpose. What Canada needs is for Canadians to give a damn about politics again, what Canada needs is a charismatic political leader with the power to inspire change. Who can this leader be? Its not Layton, its not Ignatieff, its certainly not Harper, so who is it? Is it you?

Prohibition Vs. Prohibition

Prohibition of Alcohol is a thing most people agree was a dismal failure. It is widely agreed that Prohibition of alcohol in the United States spurred on gang violence and was a gross violation of personal freedoms. Despite this wide held belief almost all politicians and a good chunk of society still feels that prohibition of drugs is a good thing. Lets compare prohibition to prohibition and think very carefully about the differences.

Alcohol Prohibition

deemed bad for the moral fiber of the United States

causes a variety of health issues

despite the prohibition of alcohol use flourished throughout the ban

since legal sale was banned illegal organizations took over the sale of alcohol

gang violence rose

general public began taking the letter of the law much less serious and due to government propaganda trust the government less

individual rights are infringed upon

Drug Prohibition

deemed bad for the moral fiber of the United States

various drugs cause various health issues to varying degrees, many considerably less serious than alcohol

despite the prohibition of drugs use flourishes to this day

since legal sale is banned illegal organizations have taken over the sale and production of drugs to the point of essentially taking over entire countries

gang violence is on the rise directly related to drugs

the general public does not take the drug laws serious at all and due to government propaganda trust the government less

individual rights are infringed upon

So what is the difference between the prohibition of drugs and the prohibition of alcohol. I say there is no difference. I challenge anyone out there to find a legitimate reason for the prohibition of drugs that does not involve moral obligations.

Marijuana growers upend hard-luck California town -- latimes.com

This is an interesting article that really seems contradictory. In it pot growers are BLAMED for increasing property values, bringing industry and an economic boom to this small town. And when I say blamed, I mean they are actually blamed. The article portrays marijuana growers as evil while pointing out that land value in the small town has increased tenfold, and businesses are profiting from the growers buying local. So where is the problem? Oh ya kids are openly talking about growing marijuana might be a viable career choice after high school, which I think is better than there options before growing became a growth industry here, which was they had not options other than leave.

Marijuana growers upend hard-luck California town -- latimes.com

Federal Eye - DEA identifies 3 agents killed in Afghanistan

Federal Eye - DEA identifies 3 agents killed in Afghanistan

Ok I am not going to say that these DEA agents had it coming or anything extremist like that, but I do have to wonder what these guys were doing in Afghanistan. In a free market, a $6.90 profit for a unit of marijuana would not last for long. Entrepreneurs noticing the great profits to be made in the marijuana market would start their own growing operations, increasing the supply of marijuana on the street, which would cause the street price of the drug to fall to a level much closer to the cost of production. Of course, this doesn't happen because the product is illegal; the prospect of jail time deters many entrepreneurs and the occasional drug bust ensures that the supply stays relatively low. We can consider much of this $6.90 per unit of marijuana profit a risk premium for participating in the underground economy. Unfortunately, this risk premium is making a lot of criminals, many of them with ties to organized crime, very wealthy.

“If we substitute a tax on marijuana cigarettes equal to the difference between the local production cost and the street price people currently pay--that is, transfer the revenue from the current producers and marketers (many of whom work with organized crime) to the government, leaving all other marketing and transportation issues aside we would have revenue of (say) $7 per [unit]. If you could collect on every cigarette and ignore the transportation, marketing, and advertising costs, this comes to over $2 billion on Canadian sales and substantially more from an export tax, and you forego the costs of enforcement and deploy your policing assets elsewhere.”

Its a very interesting article with some very interesting points. None that haven't been brought up time and time again on this blog and by many other pro marijuana supporters.

Legalized Marijuana? We May Already Be on the Way - ABC News

ABC is reporting that Obama appears to be headed towards legalization of marijuana. While I wish it were true, because any step in this direction will free up Canada to do the same (once we oust W. Bush Jr aka Harper from his throne), I highly doubt it.

Sure Obama is refusing to attack people who are using it medically, but come on, is refusing to prosecute sick people for using medicine that has been proven effective really the same thing as legalizing the medicine for anyone to use. The whole thing is a farce. Obama has no interest in legalizing marijuana, and is just as anti-drug crazy as any other american politician.

Emery To Surrender

The Prince of Pot is set to appear in BC Supreme Court to be taken into custody to serve his time in US prison. This miscarriage of justice is being carried out despite attempts by supporters to get the Canadian government to intervene on Emery's behalf.

The internets are alive with chatter about Emery today, some say he is a villain and others a martyr. Personally I think he's a Jack Ass that made some very poor choices and doesn't know when to shut up. That being said he should not be going to jail, especially not in the states. Stupidity is not a crime, nor is Jack Assery. The government should have charged Emery the second they got the "request" from the DEA to arrest Emery. That way Emery could not be extradited since under extradition treaties Canadian citizens cannot be charged for crimes they have already been punished here for. Charge him here, give him the traditional fine and slap on the wrist and tell the DEA to go take a flying leap off the nearest bridge.

Now that I am in full rant mode, I have to ask (AGAIN) why the hell does the DEA have offices on our soil. How does a foriegn police agency have ANY right to be here investigating US crimes and arresting Canadians. Sure they call the RCMP in to help out, but really come on, we should stop giving them permission to act as a police agency on our soil... where is our soverignty?

Jason Saltoun-Ebin: Marijuana: Still a "Threat to Our People"?

Jason Saltoun-Ebin: Marijuana: Still a "Threat to Our People"?

Here is an excellent article on the Legalization of Marijuana.

Sheriff Indicted For Selling Marijuana On Duty Won't Lose Job Unless Convicted

Sheriff Indicted For Selling Marijuana On Duty Won't Lose Job Unless Convicted

I can't say that I agree with this article, it makes it sound like the Sheriff should be fired. At this point in time he is only accused of selling marijuana. On one hand what this student did is great for the legalization of marijuana movement, more press = more sympathy, that being said he got himself arrested. As the local pig spokesman said "If people want that law changed, they need to go about it the right way."

Ok for those of you who don't want to read the article let me give you a quick recap. A 17 yr old boy, who's name cannot be released from Tacoma Washington gave a speech in school, his topic, Legalizaton of Marijuana, by all accounts his speech was eloquent and well argued. At the end of the speech, to prove his point, he took out a joint and smoked it. Even some who were opposed to the movement praised him for his actions, one such student stated "He took action in what he believes. ... I do not condone the action, but I commend the passion."

I too commend this boy's passion. If the movement had more people like him perhaps marijuana would already be legal. However, when all is said and done he is a seventeen year old boy with a record, a drug offence at that. I wish him luck and hopes he continues the good fight.

Wash. student caps class essay reading by lighting joint | News Bizarre | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle

Denver Political Issues Examiner: Drugs like marijuana: the no-brainer!

Denver Political Issues Examiner: Drugs like marijuana: the no-brainer!

I highly recommend reading this article, the author is bang on.
