pattern yesterday and made a test block:

The photo is so rough color-wise because it is dark as night outside. It looks like it has a yellow filter. I would wait for sun but we are going to have rain for 3 more days! We are experiencing another huge storm today. No tornadoes but heavy rain and hail and flooding. It is so sad for the people in Moore. Misery upon misery. Here's the storm moving into Moore right where the tornado hit.

Back to something happier, there is a Steam Punk Flickr group with great discussions on how to make the Steam Punk block. You can see it HERE. I don't want you to judge Steam Punk by my test block! The templates are from Sunset Seams and a lot of the Steam Punk quilters use them. Lisa even engraves your name on each pattern piece. Fun! You can see her templates HERE. Fun I tell ya!

Don't forget to enter our giveaways! You can enter our giveaway for 3 of Kathy Schmitz's embroidery/quilt patterns HERE. And you can enter our giveaway for beautiful Basic Dots from Riley Blake Designs HERE (6 half yards). I'm off to work. Please pray for the people of Moore! I am about 10 to 12 miles from Moore where the tornado touched down.

I still have friends who live in Moore that I don't know their status. All of our phone service (including cell phones) was out yesterday. Well, the cell phone worked intermittently. People who have never experienced a tornado cannot imagine the damage. Here are some photos from Chris C Anderson for the Business Insider.

In the photo on the left, you can still see the shapes of the houses, even though they are damaged beyond repair. Most of the damage looked more like the photo on the right. It looks like this in much of the city:

If the tornado left a tree, the tree had no bark and was only a stump:

This is the hospital...or what's left of the hospital. It had 10 to 15 cars inside.

The "X" on the car shows it has been searched for bodies.

It was hard to even identify the structures that were left. The loss of life is so low because we have so many of these storms that we have the most up-to-date storm forecasting equipment in the world. The only thing is that there is not much time from sunny skies to bad tornado..maybe 20 minutes.
These storms always bring out the best in the people of Oklahoma City, the USA and even the world. In fact, the rush to help can be a problem until there is some sort of organization. Here is a group of bystanders digging someone out of the debris.

My little daughter-in-law works as a nurse at the pediatric intensive care unit at Children's Hospital and she worked all night. I haven't talked to her but Eric tells me that it was bad.

They are still looking for survivors. My children and I are all okay. We thank God and pray for those that are not all right. Please join us in prayers. Thanks again from the bottom of my heart to those who emailed me to check on me. It meant the world to me! Love all you guys! I did the next Virtual Quilting Bee block. It was challenging so that made it fun for me. I'm using Daisy Cottage fabric from the shop to force myself to use fabric other than my yellow, red, aqua, pink, orange, lime colors.
I love my blogging friends! I not only found the names of the fabrics I was looking for but I emailed back and forth with the designer of one of them. Alas, it looks like those fabrics were from 2006 and it will be difficult to find them. The first fabric is Prairie Paisley by Minick & Simpson and the second is from Chloe's Closet and is called Picket Fence. Thanks so much to those who helped!

Yesterday I watched the weather and tried to keep track of the whereabouts of all my kids and grandkids...like that would do any good. Oklahoma City was where the storms started. It was kind of amazing. At 3:00 PM the sun was shining and not many clouds. At 3:30 PM it was dark like night and there were 3 tornadoes (not on the ground but up in the air) within a couple of miles from my house! Brett took this photo of the tornado that hit Shawnee, a small town near Oklahoma City. I've been right in tornadoes at least 4 times and have 4 stories of what that was like. I can tell you that they really do sound like freight trains. I think what makes them so bad while you are waiting for them is that they are so unpredictable. Once after a storm that hit a town about 10 miles away, I was standing on the back deck watching a rainbow and a huge piece of metal from the side of a large building of some kind crashed right into our swimming pool. The debris had traveled that far and was falling out of the sky. The largest percentage of injuries and deaths are men who are standing outside watching the tornado! I won't comment on that. We are supposed to have the same thing happen today. Then these storms are going to move East. Keep good thoughts for everyone please! Last night I stitched up a pieced flower block from the Green Tea and Sweet Beans quilt. As you can see, it has a lot of pieces so I made vinyl pattern pieces. Afterwards it occurred to me that it might have been easier to applique it.

It was fun to make but there's only one of these blocks in the entire quilt so it's on to something else. The Green Tea and Sweet Beans quilt pattern is by Jen Kingwell who is from Australia. It costs a fortune to get her patterns shipped over here or I would sell them in the shop. Here is what the quilt looks like:

See, you can hardly pick out the little block I did last night. Jen has a quilt called Steam Punk that I'm going to do at some point. The blocks are all the same and I found a lady in Australia that makes acrylic templates for the block. She even engraves your name on the templates so that you can keep track of the templates if you go to a class or quilt outing. Here's the Steam Punk quilt:

Jen uses a lot of gray and black and white in her quilts. I wish I had a close up of the Steam Punk block. I think it will be an easy and fun quilt to do, especially with the templates. I tried to get enough interest in Jen's patterns to get people to pre-order so that I could afford to get them in the shop but not one person was interested. That made me wonder about my taste in quilts...lol. Oh well, my kids will have some weird quilts to sell at the big garage sale they have when I go to the big sewing room in the sky....

I also fixed the mistake I made in the last block of the Virtual Quilting Bee quilt. I just couldn't stand looking at it. Here's the before:

and here's the after. It just kept stomping its little quilty foot and so I took it apart and fixed it.

And there you have it. The most exciting part of my day...my little sewing time. It's so therapeutic. I really do know that, at some point, I'm going to have to try to finish some of the tops I have piling up. I wish I had the money to, like some quilters, send them off to be quilted. But then I'd be relinquishing control of how they look. What do you think of Jen Kidwell's work? Don't you just love it? Well, I need to go work on my "real job". Today I'm writing about baby sale items and makeup and about property management. Should be an exciting day....sigh. I'm grateful to have a job. Really. So I picked up my Scrappy Trips Around the World quilt and did these blocks:

Another couple of sessions and I should have a full-size quilt top. I love this pattern and it is really fast. I have tons more strips cut so I might even make more than one of these tops. Hope you are having a good Monday! One of my crazy friends!

Friday at last! I pulled out my little star quilt to put the border on tonight. I'm going to actually quit working at 5 or so today. I'm sick of working and so need a break.

I pulled this little quilt out of the closet because of the Quilt Show feature on star quilts this week. When Ricky Tims does something, I immediately want to start doing it too. I admit it...I have Q.A.D.D. (quilt attention deficit disorder). I want to do everything so I have 50 things going. I have come to accept that there is no cure for me. I am not sad about it either.

Big Disclaimer Here! Warning! I've been watching my friend, Joe Dan Gorman's video showing what Pravda is saying about us here in the USA. Joe Dan has made many people mad. He is very outspoken. I don't usually promote Joe Dan's videos but this one really gets to me. He quotes what Pravada has to say about us and shows a Cuban escapee and shows part of the Declaration of Independence from the John Adams mini-series. Watch if you want...you may be entertained and you may, like many of us, fall in love with Joe Dan! He has many videos and gives you many opportunities to love him or hate him. I love him! So here ya go...we have to start standing for what we believe in. I probably won't be adding any more political opinion material to this blog but it's who I am and what I believe so, if it offends you, I'm sorry. You can un-friend me any time and I understand. If you agree that our beliefs should be able to stand on the merits, welcome to the world of Joe Dan, my crazy friend.
Charlie survived the storms we had last night. He is deathly afraid of thunder and for some unknown reason, feels safest when he is draped over my head. His logic escapes me. Either he is trying to protect me or he thinks he'll blend in when the thunder monster comes after him. I need a class in shih tzu logic 101.

Because of the storm, I felt justified in turning off the computer and stitching up the 6-inch block for the Country Threads BOM. In keeping with the red, white and black color scheme for this quilt, I made a screaming red block.

As you can see, the white with black dot fabric gives the block a bovine quality--not exactly what I was going for but....oh well, it's just a 6-inch block. I can't wait to see how all these blocks will look together.

Today I'm writing for our new client again and also writing for another client about designer jeans...boyfriend jeans, skinny jeans, ultra-skinny jeans, "can't breathe but look great" jeans and my favorite, "can only be worn by an anorexic model" jeans. Do you believe they actually have a "minus five" size jeans? I'll go off to work now thanking God Above that I am not young during this era of "skinny worship"!. Have a great day! She is so talented in multiple areas. She designs fabric, she's an artist, she's a potter and she designs sewing and quilting patterns. Well, Jennifer is offering a FREE tutorial for this adorable pin cushion!

You can find the tutorial for this pincushion HERE. You can also buy the little ice cream dish at Jennifer's Etsy shop HERE. Cute, cute, cute!

I'm still having huge work days. I don't see an end...sigh.... I'm praying every day that God keep me from self-pity (lol) and away from envy of those of you who have the luxury of having your entire day free to plan sewing, shopping, lunching with friends, etc. I hope you don't take it for granted.

And you don't have to admonish me for feeling a little self-pity or envy. I admonish myself all the time for that. I wish I were a better person like many quilting bloggers are. I am glad for everyone who is blessed with wonderful husbands who take them to quilt shops and then to lunch after they've bought a bunch of fabric. These wonderful guys usually take them on scenic drives and to antique shops on the way home. Then when they get home, build them a giant ironing table and a new addition to the house as a sewing annex. I'm glad for those women....glad, I tell ya.

Oh my, how did I get off on that tangent? I think it's cause my 24 year-old boss just emailed me that we are having yet another emergency lunch meeting....sigh.....and by the way would I mind doing a quick 8 paragraph summary for the meeting? So gotta go. Please excuse me. I know I have a long way to go to be the kind of person I want to be....hope I live long enough! It's not looking promising at this point! Have a good Wednesday! Quilter Makes Mistake....and LEAVES It!!!

I've been working so many hours lately...old women should not have to work, much less have 3 jobs! I was so tired last night that I went to sleep on the couch at 8:00 or so. I woke up at 1AM and started working again. Then I was wide awake (a relatively dangerous time for me-lol). At 2:00 AM or so, I decided to stitch together the latest Virtual Quilting Bee block:

I'm making these blocks from Daisy Cottage fabric from the shop. I'm trying to use other fabric than my "usual". As you can see, my piecing was okay but I put one block in sideways....sigh. I might take it out and I might LEAVE IT! Gasp! I probably will cave and fix it though. It will always jump off the quilt and shake its little virtual finger at me. This is the danger of 2 AM sewing. So back to work for me today. I'm writing about, of all things, adverse possession (don't ask). Where's a law degree when you need one.... I hope you all have a great day! I stitched together the 12" block for the Country Threads BOM for May.

This is the BOM that I decided to do in black, white and red because I tend to always use the same colors over and over. There is also a 6" block this month but it will have to wait until tonight or until another day. Hope you have a great Monday! As you can see, this block has 16 little whirley gig blocks. I'm experienced in piecing blocks and I find the blocks in this quilt very challenging. There are lots of places that need to fit right next to each other. That makes it fun for me but there are some real doozies in this quilt! Blocks that are much more difficult than these.

There are also quite a few applique blocks in this quilt so those will be fun. We have a new client at work so they need lots of writing done. I'll be working today and not stitching but I'm grateful to have a job. Don't forget to enter our giveaway for free embroidery and quilt patterns from Kathy Schmitz! You can enter that giveaway HERE. They are adorable! And of course, be sure to enter our May Giveaway for dot fabric (in the post right before this one)! Have a wonderful day! Cheery wave from Bev
I love dots so much that I thought we would have another dot giveaway this month! For the May giveaway, enter to win 1/2 yard of each of the small polka dot basics fabrics shown!
These dots are best sellers at the shop and I just love them! They go with everything in my stash!

To enter, just take a look at our Etsy shop HERE and come back and comment telling me what item is your favorite.
The giveaway ends May 31st and I will announce a winner on June 1st (unless I have an "elder mental episode" like I did this month...sigh...). I wish I could give everyone free polka dot fabric! I was going to pick some roses in honor of May Day and put them in a little May Day pocket I made to photograph for the blog. Yesterday was also the day to announce the winners of the April Giveaway! But I did another blog entry that was totally unrelated and, until I just turned the page on my calendar, I didn't even think about it being May! Don't tell my kids...I don't want them to think I'm ready for "the home"! The winners of the April Giveaway are:

Ginny Caldwell

and

Sumi Tzrnacki

Thanks to everyone who entered and I wish I had a gift for you all! I'll announce the May Giveaway tomorrow so be sure to stop back by the blog.

As many of you know, my daughter, Gina, is an artist and I've <strike>been after her</strike> encouraged her to design fabric. I think her designs are unique and I would love to have fabrics from them. Well, here's a pillow made from one of her designs:

I just love that fabric! You can actually buy the pillow cover HERE. Hopefully, she will get some fabric printed on Spoon Flower.

I have to write about clothing in the UK store of one of our clients today so have to get to work. Sweaters are called jumpers and color is spelled colour in the UK so I have to be careful. Yesterday it was 84 degrees here and today it is 33 degrees. Maybe that is what is befuddling my brain! It's as good an excuse as any! Have a great day! Cheery wave from Bev

The block will be 16 of these little blocks set 4 blocks by 4 blocks. Here's the one applique block I've completed on this quilt:
I've collected quite a few awesome tutorials and I just thought I'd share with you! Maybe you will have time to do some of these or will bookmark them and make them later. That's what I'm going to do...hey....it could happen! Here's the first tutorial from Happy Zombie blog by Monica Solorio-Snow. I am so in love with just about everything she does. This is an oldie but a goodie!

Look at those colors. You can find this "Poochie Bag" tutorial on her website HERE. Next, one of my all-time FAVORITE designers, Jennifer Jangles a/k/a Jennifer Heynen, has a darling pillow that can use up some of your oddly shaped scraps:

Isn't this so cute!!! I love the big rick-rack edge and her beautiful ceramic buttons! This would be the perfect gift for the graduate who is going on to have a dorm room. Or for a chair or couch or bed or for me....just send on my way! You can find Jennifer's tutorial HERE.
Next find a tutorial from Molly Flanders for making quick half-square triangles. I was worried when I first saw this tutorial about the bias edges on the squares but, like Molly, I think it helps. Just remember to press with the iron...don't push the iron over the square. The square will still work but you have to trim it. As they say, I love trimming a bunch of half-square triangle blocks said no quilter ever!

You can find Molly's tutorial HERE. So enjoy Tutorial Tuesday. I might make it a regular thing because I have saved so many great tutorials by so many talented people! Have a fabulous day! It is a gorgeous day! There is no wind, it is sunny and it will be 80 degrees. Heaven for runners...I am not a runner but will be joining the runners in my mind...lol.

I've done another Oklahoma Beauty block. They are just so much fun to stitch together.

I've also been preparing block 2 of the Civil War Bride quilt. It takes for. ev. er. to get prepped. This block has 65 pieces to applique in just one block. First I make templates out of plastic, then I trace onto applique paper, then iron them on the pieces (after taking the time to select the fabric) and then cut them out and with a glue stick, turn under the edges. Then I have to cut bias for stems and secure all to the background fabric. Then and only then can I sew it down. As someone who likes instant gratification, it is hard to wait for the fun part for me which is the applique stitching. So I stopped and made a quick Oklahoma Beauty block.

One of my favorite designers, Jennifer Heynen, has a new quilt pattern out that is SO CUTE!

I ordered them for the shop and they should be available on Monday. If you owl lovers or baby quilt makers want to reserve one, let me know. This is an easy, iron-on, buttonhole stitch applique (well you could do needle turn but why would you on a kid's quilt) and I think it's adorable! It would make a baby quilt that's perfect even if you don't know the sex of the baby. Those are hard to find!

In local news (my house), Lola, the crazy puppy mill dog, who panics in the car, has now adapted perfectly to the car ride, thanks to having her own secure car seat!

She sits quietly, looks out the window and no longer thrashes around like she is in the belly of some ravenous beast! Thank you car seat designer whoever you are!

Speaking of dogs...Charlie is out of the dog house for throwing up on my quilt. I washed it twice and actually pressed it a little before it was completely dry and it looks great! I just started using Gain dryer sheets and man, do they make everything smell fabulous!

So enough procrastinating and off to write about cosmetics and men's underwear! I don't use either one but, what the heck, I can write about them! Have a great Friday! I did have some lanterns that I bought at Walmart for $10. each. They take 4 of those big honkin batteries but they stayed on until the power came on (at 2:45 AM). I recommend them to everyone!

So sitting in the lantern light, I had lots of time to think about how lucky we are. Our ancestors of not that long ago didn't have central heat, lights, cable tv, computers and Bernina sewing machines to wile away their evenings. I believe that God put me in this time because I am such a wimp. So I have hung this quilt in my living room:

I don't know if you can tell, but there is hand buttonhole stitching around each applique piece. During the evening (in the dark), I heard Charlie scratching on something I thought was his little rug to try to make himself comfortable. A little later, I heard him throwing up. I thought, "great, now I have to wash his little rug again" but no, the quilt had somehow fallen off the wall, onto the floor. Yes, Charlie made himself comfortable on it and then threw up on it. It's in the washer right now. I have no idea how it's going to look after that. I was just using straight pins to hold it up because I never (because I was lazy) put a hanging sleeve on the back. I hang quilts up every once in a while to hang out any wrinkles. It isn't my favorite quilt but....sigh....Guess I won't be doing that in the future.

Here's a mystery. Looking at the photo of this quilt, I realize that the solid fabrics I used for this quilt are nowhere to be found. I'm not sure how that is possible unless they too were stolen from the back of the SUV when I was moving. Guess I'll start building a solid stash again. I have a few but not enough....of course...lol. Well have a great day. Wish me luck with what I find when I open the washer. Oh, and thanks to everyone who followed me on Bloglovin! Apparently I've been on Bloglovin for a while and didn't even know it! Another sigh...... I'll give you an extra entry in our giveaways! Cheery wave from Bev

Sooo, it appears that lots of bloggers are going to BlogLovin. So....

I put my blog on BlogLovin and....

I even figured out how to put a button on the blog! If you look in the left column at the top....

right under my other buttons, you will see that button. If you follow me on Bloglovin,

and let me know in a comment that you have followed, I'll give you another entry to all our giveaways!

Just want to make it worth your while. I like Bloglovin, I think. I'm making it a project to follow your blogs if you are on Bloglovin too. Just mention that in your comment and I'll follow you and people who read this blog can follow you too! Hope everyone has a great day today!
