      <title>It&#8217;s Hard To Hit A Goal You Don&#8217;t Have</title>

        <p>Jon and I were talking earlier today about goals and I thought I&#8217;d share some of those thoughts with you. Many of us have these vague and vaporous ideas we like to call goals. That&#8217;s me included. We call them goals, but really they are just dreams at this point. Why? Because we have no plans to make them reality.</p>

<p>I&#8217;m defining a goal this way: &#8220;A goal is a desire to achieve a result measurable in concrete terms.&#8221; </p>

<p>&#8220;I want to see the world.&#8221; <em>That&#8217;s a dream.</em> &#8220;I want to visit Stockholm and Gothenburg this October 15th through the 27th.&#8221; <em>That is a goal.</em> The only way that it stays a goal is by developing a plan. First, I need a passport before I can leave/enter another country, second I need money for the tickets. I need to then actually buy the tickets. And when the 14th of October rolls around, I need to pack and drive to the airport and get on the right plane!</p>

<blockquote><p>Stop being afraid of your dreams.</p></blockquote>

<p>So often we leave our dreams floating aimlessly through our imaginations and never turn them into real tangible goals. It&#8217;s time to stop that. Stop being afraid of your dreams. Stop being afraid of failure when you start making goals. Failure is just one of life&#8217;s classes. Learn from it and try again. </p>

<p><em>Our challenge to you and us as well is this:</em> Take 14 minutes today and turn one of your dreams into a tangible goal. Write it on a sheet of paper. Then, on that same peice of paper, write three things you can do in the next week to get you closer to that goal. Post this paper somewhere you have to see it multiple times per day. Check off those items as you do them. When next week rolls around and you&#8217;ve completed those three things, <b>write down three more</b>. Do this for three months and see if you don&#8217;t start achieving your goals.</p>

<p>It may take some time before you get any real momentum going. Trust me, I know. But keep at it, <em>you will get there</em>. Keep taking that next step. That is all you have to do. </p>

<p><a href="http://fixoutlook.org/" title="Fixoutlook.org">Fixoutlook.org</a> is a fabulous initiative from our <a href="http://fortysevenmedia.com/blog/category/design_hope/" title="Design Hope">Design Hope</a> sponsors <a href="http://www.campaignmonitor.com/" title="Campaign Monitor">Campaign Monitor</a> and <a href="http://newism.com.au/" title="Newism">Newism</a>. It sucked bad enough when Microsoft decided to use Word to render HTML emails in Outlook 2007. With one fell swoop they took email designs back 7 years. Now they&#8217;re saying Outlook 2010 will do the same. In fact they&#8217;re not even going to change the rendering engine at all. It *barely* supports tables, no CSS position and has mounds of bugs and quirks. All to say, if you thought Internet Explorer was the bane of your existence, you haven&#8217;t tried designing and coding an HTML email for Outlook. IE&#8217;s a walk in the park compared to this.       <title>Setting Up Custom Category URL Structures in ExpressionEngine</title>

        <p>We just finished up a particularly fun project, <a href="http://casillasinc.com/" title="Casillas">Casillas, Inc</a>. They're an amazing custom furniture maker in California. In an odd turn of events, we actually did very little design for the site and became the "backend guys" if you will. As we got into how we wanted the site to be structured we realized that because of the product names (all numbers) we needed to use the category that the product was part of in the URL structure. So for example it would read:</p>

<p><code>http://site.com/products/sofas/10-123/ </code></p>

<p>And if the user accesses:</p>

<p><code>http://site.com/products/sofas/</code></p>

<p>Then all the sofas get shown. Back one more and all the categories. Great! Now how in the world do we do that with <a href="http://www.expressionengine.com/index.php?affiliate=47m" title="ExpressionEngine">ExpressionEngine</a>?</p>

<h2>First Problem</h2>

<p>By default, EE uses either the <em>category ID number</em> to display all the entries in that category:</p>

<p><code>http://site.com/products/C12</code></p>

<p>Or you can turn on URL titles and choose your <em>"trigger"</em> word. So if <strong>category</strong> was the trigger the URL would be:</p>

<p><code>http://site.com/products/category/sofas</code></p>

<p>Hence, we need to figure out how to remove the category trigger.</p>

<h2>Second Problem</h2>

<p>We want the URL title of the entry (the product number in this case) to immediately follow the category name. And we want that URL scheme to be the permanent location of the product. Because this isn't how EE works out of the box, there is potential to trip us up down the road and make it hard to create those permalinks reliably. Can we do it? You bet we can!</p>

<h2>The Solution</h2>

<p>As you can see in the diagram above, we're going to harness the power of <strong>segment variables</strong> to make our magic happen. What are segments? Well, it's pretty easy. <code>Segment 1</code> is the first section in your URL after your .com, <code>Segment 2</code> is the next and so on. EE will handle up to 9! I hope I hope I never have to use that many.</p>

<p>First, we need to setup our template group (products in this case) and then on the index template inside that group we begin our work. We're actually going to manage to put all of this in one template using <code>if statements</code>. Yep, that blew my mind the first time, too. Keep in mind that all this code has been stripped down to bare minimum to keep it easier to follow. My template code for this page was pretty large with all the HTML markup in it.</p>

<p>We'll start with the categories page:</p>

<p>Here we tell EE that if Segment 2 and 3 are empty, we use this part of the template. Then we use the weblog:categories tag to list the categories and make them links.</p>

<p>Second is the category entries page:</p>

<p>Here we continue the <code>if statement</code> by saying that if <code>Segment 2</code> has something in it and <code>Segment 3</code> is empty we use this part of the template. Add to that a little SQL Query magic to pull the category ID from the category URL and then you can start making your links to the products. Notice you need to pass the category ID to the weblog loop and then you can use the title permalink in conjunction with the first two segment variables.</p>

<p>And finally the single entry:</p>

<p>If <code>Segment 3</code> is populated then we look for the entry inside it and pull the data. It gets more complicated after that to use permalinks and title paths, but we didn't run into an issue we couldn't get past. And don't forget, you can go to <a href="http://casillasinc.com/products/">http://casillasinc.com/products/</a> and click around to see how it works. Also, before you think I'm a mad genius or something, this is based on some excellent work by a guy named "TheStig" in the <a href="http://expressionengine.com/forums/viewthread/71238/" title="Clean URL's with Categories">EE forums</a>. The only credit I can take is for making it a little easier to understand <img src="http://fortysevenmedia.com/images/smileys/wink.gif" width="19" height="19" alt="wink" style="border:0;" />.</p>

      <title>Repeating Footer Background Image Scrolling Issue</title>

        <p>One of our astute readers discovered a flaw in our footer design implementations recently and I thought I'd share it with you. Turns out that we have a penchant for using a background image repeating on a 100% wide footer. Also turns out that when you squash your browser window down to anything smaller than the content and then scroll over to the right that background image stops repeating! See what I mean here:</p>

<p>It's not a huge deal, but if you have a site with a dark background and a lighter footer with dark text, this can quickly render that text unreadable. A quick check showed that pretty much any site I checked had this same problem, even Firefox.com! Well fortunately that astute reader (<strong>Timothy Phillips</strong> is his name) also provided a fix in his email to us. Just add a <code>min-width</code> value to the footer.</p>

<p>Obviously your value would change depending on your site design. And sometimes your design might call for this treatment on the whole container or content area, so use wisely. If you want to fix it in IE6, I really don't care <img src="http://fortysevenmedia.com/images/smileys/smile.gif" width="19" height="19" alt="smile" style="border:0;" />. Use the <code>!important</code> hack or something.</p>

      <title>The Car Fairy &#45; Design Process</title>

        <p><img class="right" src="http://fortysevenmedia.com/images/uploads/Car-Fairy-Logo-Final-thumb.jpg" border="0" alt="image" width="165" height="165" />We do logos on a regular basis, but few are of the illustrated variety. So when I was contacted to illustrate the logo for &#8220;The Car Fairy,&#8221; I have to admit that <em>I got a bit excited</em>. </p>

<p>While I take great joy in crafting a great website from scratch, there is something uniquely satisfying about illustration. I found my trusty black notebook and cheap-o Paper Mate pen and began to sketch out some roughs to give our client a few variations. Originally, they wanted a redneck mechanic type of fellow with a tutu. Being from <b>The South</b>, I am quite familiar with this sort of friendly backyard car enthusiast. I knocked out a few different looks and came up with these three fellas.</p>

<p>Overalls and wands aren&#8217;t normally something you&#8217;d see together, so you can quickly tell that the end product was going to be some quite memorable. Our client really liked these preliminary sketches, but had decided since we last spoke that they now wanted to steer away from the redneck persona to avoid having to provide background in their advertising. Back to the notebook! </p>

Great, I&#8217;ve got the clothes. That was easy. It&#8217;s classic, funny, and readily recognizable. Now, what about the character himself? The face I kept thinking of was a cross between a plumber and a boxer. I gave it a whirl and it really fit the part. You can see him to the right.</p>

<p>This sketch got the go ahead for color treatment <em>so I broke it down vector stylee</em> and got our boy all colored up. I placed the scan in Illustrator and traced him up by body part, each main feature getting its own layer. This brand will heavily rely on the character so they needed a full body version as well as the logo treatment. This is the full body color version to show how the character would stand. <b>Like so</b>:</p>

<p>It was green lighted for the full logo treatment so I began auditioning different type faces. Sugar Pie had the right amount of whimsical flair and won out in the end. From there, it was gradients and several layers of offset paths to give it the right amount of depth and visual weight. Now comes that subtle <em>&#8220;I&#8217;m conveying a message&#8221;</em> part of the logo. Since The Car Fairy gives you cash for your car, it was important to convey that transaction with the character. You&#8217;ll notice that the cash is in the hand closest to you and the keys in the hand furthest away. You get an idea of what they do just from a glance at the logo. This was one of those rare occasions where we could be very literal with the message without it becoming cluttered or too heavy-handed. From there, we added to that an old style cartoon frame to pop out of and we had ourselves a logo.</p>

        <p>I keep hearing this word. Relevant. It seems to be everywhere. It hasn’t yet reached the obnoxious level of say, “<b>extreme</b>,” but it is popping up all over the place. People are suddenly, and desperately trying to be relevant.</p>

<blockquote><p>Things, people, and companies that seem to be so relevant today planned that relevance months, or even years ago.</p></blockquote>

<p>“What’s the problem with that?” you might ask. Well, relevance has to do with relating to things and people right now. If you are spend all your time being concerned with being relevant, <em>chances are you aren’t and haven’t been relevant for a while</em>. Why? Because you are trying to catch up to now from the past rather than planning for the future. </p>

<p>Things, people, and companies that seem to be so relevant today planned that relevance months, or even years ago. Don’t plan for right now, you should have done that a long time ago. Instead plan for tomorrow, next week and next year, today.

      <title>Communication and the Big Picture</title>

        <p>When you're working on a new design for a client, <em>good communication is key</em>. Just recently we've run into a situation where an agency keeps having us change little things to try to get the design right for them without stepping back and addressing the larger direction of the whole thing. Granted, it should have been their job to say, "Hey this is way too modern" or "We were really thinking of using some kind of weathered, worn look instead" instead of "the radius of the rounded corner doesn't look right," but the reality is most clients don't know how to communicate this kind of stuff to you. Apparently even some design agencies. They just know it doesn't feel right, and then they try to fix it with nitpicks (see <a href="http://fortysevenmedia.com/blog/archives/picking_nits/" title="Picking Nits">Nate's article here</a>).</p>

<p>Well obviously that approach is counterproductive to everyone involved, so we've started coming up with a list of things we can do to minimize the damage. This is what we've got so far:</p>

<ul>
<li>Have the client come up with a list of their competitor's sites.</li>
<li>Discuss what they like and don't like about them.</li>
<li>Have the client come up with a list of sites that they like</li>
<li>Take some time to find out why they like them. Is it the information layout? The look and feel?</li>
<li>I've heard moodboards are a good, but we haven't gotten around to using those yet. </li>
</ul>

<p>A good designer should be able to tell when their client isn't digging the overall vibe or direction and get to the root of the problem before they end up in nit-pick land.       <title>Picking Nits</title>

        <p>There is a very definite line between the drive for excellence and the desire to nit pick something to death. Excellence has the good common sense to recognize itself. Nit picking knows only picking. Doesn&#8217;t matter what it picks <em>as long as there is picking</em>.</p>

<p>I like to call this Nit Harvesting. </p>

<blockquote><p>But let&#8217;s face it, picking nits is fun! At least for the person picking them, because it sounds like they know what they are talking about!</p></blockquote>

<p>Rather than a little selective hand pick here and there, there are some folks who have developed Nit Combines! Massive and rapid harvesting of nits large and small can now be achieved through the wonders of technology!</p>

<p>Ok, so I&#8217;m exaggerating a bit. I know that sometimes you need to get rid of the good, to make room for the great. But let&#8217;s face it, picking nits is fun! At least for the person picking them, because it sounds like they know what they are talking about! And they might. More often than not, I find that Nit Harvesters are simply insecure. They have a need to show you that they know something too. That or they are simply cannot be pleased. That can happen too. Watch out for anyone who wants to hire you for any other reason than they like your work. </p>

<p>Dealing with people face to face alleviates a good bit of Nit Harvesting. It&#8217;s much harder to do that to someone face to face. However, the anonymity of the internet can encourage this sort of thing with good people who wouldn&#8217;t normally do this. </p>

<p>So, what do you do with a Nit Harvester? Two things. <em>First, call them on it</em>. And remember to kind about it, there&#8217;s no need to spiteful and unprofessional. People always respond much better to kindness. Second, if they don&#8217;t consider their actions over the top and simply can&#8217;t be pleased, cut them loose. You might lose a few dollars (or pounds/euros/etc.) but you will save your sanity and <b>you can get back to doing something profitable.</b> </p>

        <p>The world has changed since I've entered the ranks of the employed. You used to be able to show up somewhere, work hard and advance in that business. That is no longer the norm. What now? How are people getting ahead?</p>

<p>I don't claim to have definitive answers, but I can tell you where there is amazing opportunity for growth. Coding.</p>

<p>That's pretty generic I know but that is sort of the point. Almost everything that is technologically exciting has some sort of code attached to it. Twitter, Facebook? Code built. iPhone apps? Them too. From Javascript to Ruby on Rails, the businesses of the world need coders.</p>

<p>So here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to give you links to a few things to get you started. And when you've gotten up the nerve and the determination to jump off the deep end into the unknown, I want to hear about it, ok?</p>

<p>I'm breaking this down in sections so start where you need to.</p>
