Randy Moss shed the dreads and looked every bit a team player as he demonstrated a cut and quick feet for his fellow wide receivers, who listened intently and observed while the veteran impressed in his first formal practice with the 49ers.

Clean cut with a short hairdo and sporting a red No. 84 jersey while running routes under clear skies, Moss is one of the signature faces for the new-look Niners. After a comeback season in 2011, they’re determined to make another Super Bowl push.

The 35-year-old Moss even dazzled with a 55-yard touchdown catch from Alex Smith — no matter that there were no defenders in his way, the play drew cheers from right tackle Anthony Davis, who threw his arms into the air in celebration.

The 49ers have agreed to terms with sixth round safety Trent Robinson and fifth round linebacker Darius Fleming.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Robinson began his career at Michigan State as a cornerback before moving to safety in 2009. Over his 46-game career, the 5-foot-9, 195-pound Robinson totaled 229 tackles and nine interceptions with 12 passes defensed. Robinson has 4.5-40 speed and posted a 35″ vertical leap and 15 reps in the bench press at the Combine.

Robinson is expected to begin his career as a back-up safety who contributes on special teams.

The 6-foot-1, 245-pound Fleming played both defensive end and linebacker at Notre Dame, totaling 157 tackles, 32 tackles for loss, 14.5 sacks with two interceptions and seven passes defensed during his 50-game career in South Bend. Like Robinson, Fleming’s NFL career is expected to begin as a backup/core special teams player.

“The Hill” is a a horse trail off Highway 280 above Edgewood Park in San Carlos. It’s the place where Roger Craig, Ronnie Lott, Keena Turner, Eric Wright and others trained during the 49ers glory years.

When Jerry Rice was a rookie, the veterans introduced him to their training regimen. Rice struggled mightily the first time with the 2 1/2-mile uphill climb.

Craig said they didn’t see Rice again for several weeks. But when Rice returned, he was ready for the challenge. Now, that hill is emblematic of Rice’s legendary — some would say maniacal — work ethic.

Rice, now an ESPN analyst, said Tuesday according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayarea.com that new 49ers receiver A.J. Jenkins will be able to carry over lessons learned on “The Hill” to the crucial stages of games.

“I think he’s going to learn toughness and how to be able to endure, which is very important because in the fourth quarter when you’re tired, you’re going to have to make plays to help your team win that football game and you have to be able to stay focused,” Rice said. “So if you can master the hill, in the fourth quarter you’re still going to be able to go out there and excel.”

Rice made a pledge Monday in a Twitter exchange with Jenkins, a first-round draft pick from Illinois, to run “The Hill” with him. Jenkins will remain permanently in the Bay Area upon arriving Thursday for the 49ers’ rookie minicamp.

Well the first round is done and over, and it went by quick, and had a lot of movement. The 49ers filled a need at the WR position by selecting Illinois wide out A.J. Jenkins. Jenkins is average sized, but does a good job making plays after the catch. While he doesn’t have amazing speed he knows how to find holes in zone coverage. Somehow though I can’t help but feel that they reached for him at 30. The teams has bigger needs on the offensive line and a player like Cordy Glenn was still there, but they felt Jenkins wouldn’t be there in the second round. Jenkins however has the chance to learn from Randy Moss and Mario Manningham, who is fresh off a Super Bowl win.
Now that the team is heading into the second round they need to address the need on the offensive line. The 49ers got the guy they really wanted, but could it have come at too high a price? I guess only time will tell.

The Sacramento Bee reports that right now the Niners have yet to address how the depth chart will be at the QB spot with the acquisition of Josh Johnson.

The 49ers have not talked to their four quarterbacks about the pecking order at the position. But newcomer Josh Johnson today said the player at the top of the depth chart is apparent. “Obviously Alex (Smith) is the starter. He deserves it,” Johnson said.

Johnson said that he and the others have begun meeting this week with coaches, including Jim Harbaugh, offensive coordinator Greg Roman and quarterbacks coach Geep Chryst. He’s also thrown to some of his new receivers, including tight ends Vernon Davis and Delanie Walker. Said Johnson to the duo: “You all run like receivers. That’s something new for me. You’ve got to treat them like receivers.” As for Smith’s role as the starter, Johnson said it’s just “common sense. It’s how the industry works. Why wouldn’t he be? He went to the NFC Championship last year.”

Groundbreaking for the new 49ers stadium will begin on Thursday and according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, the team hopes that in four years the $1.02 billion facility will be the site of Super Bowl L (otherwise known as Super Bowl 50).

A team source said Friday that the 49ers plan to bid for that Super Bowl. If that is awarded to another city, they also will shoot for the following year’s game.

The next three Super Bowls will be played in New Orleans, New Jersey and Glendale, Ariz. respectively. The next one to be awarded, Super Bowl L, will be played in February 2016. Teams are required to play two full seasons in their new venues before hosting a Super Bowl. The 49ers are increasingly confident that the yet-to-be-named stadium in Santa Clara will be ready for the start of the 2014 season.

According to the NFL, the process will begin this summer when interested cities apply to the Super Bowl Advisory Committee for an invitation to bid. The committee then decides on finalists at the owners meeting in October. A vote is expected to take place in May.

There is good reason to believe Santa Clara will get the bid. The NFL likes to place Super Bowls in new venues and the 49ers will have the shiniest and newest digs when Super Bowl L rolls around.
