September 17. 100 days to Christmas. Time flies. Like I mentioned in my previous post, I didn't intend to change my blog design within this year. But the jquery used in the design ran into several problems, one of the worst being that it won't let me retrieve my posting at all. So I had to say adios and managed to move my lazy fingers to update this post.

Currently I have three unfinished drafts sleeping in my blogger dashboard. At least one of them will see light of the world soon, hopefully.

9월 17일입니다. 인터넷이나 각종 SNS를 보니 오늘이 크리스마스까지 100일 남은 날이라네요. 정말 시간이 후다닥 가버렸습니다.

전에 썼듯이 올해 안에 블로그 디자인을 바꿀 생각은 없었습니다만, 블로그에 신경을 못쓰는 동안 템플릿에 쓰이는 jquery에 여러가지 문제가 발생했습니다. 그 중에 최악은 포스팅 읽기 자체가 안되는 에러였고요 -_-

결국 제일 맘에 들었고 꽤 공을 많이 들인 두번째 디자인과도 작별입니다.

그리고 그 덕분에(?) 이렇게나마 귀차니즘을 이겨내고 포스팅을 하네요;;

현재 Blogger Dashboard 안에는 미완성으로 남아 있는 3개의 포스팅이 있습니다.

적어도 한 개 이상은 빨리 세상 빛을 봐야될텐데..;;

My first intent was to change my blog theme twice a year, like half-annual closing (yes, all in the end, I'm a finance major). When I finally got myself to start writing again, however, I decided not to change the blog design during 2010. Instead, I wanted to put more time into writing. Well, soon after my first posting, I ended up getting a new job which I still love; consequently, my ambition to fill the blog with weekly posting had vanished. Sad.

Although I've been bit lazy last year, this space will be mine anyways - so I kept my word to change the blog design. I took bit more time to research the basic frame and to implement customization - which means I probably won't change this theme in near future.

There are many posting ideas locked within my iPhone notepad - it's time for them to get some public exposure. For those of you who have liked my previous postings, I won't let you down this year either :)

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

제가 이 블로그를 처음 열었을 땐 반년에 한번씩, 그러니까 일년에 두번은 디자인을 바꾸자는 생각으로 시작했습니다. 뭐 회사에서 반기결산 하고 그러는 것처럼.... (본업과 전공은 속일 수 없군요 -_-;;) 첫 글을 쓰고 나서 다시 생각해보니, 4월이어서 상반기이긴 하지만 하반기 된다고 금방 또 디자인을 바꾸면 괜히 그 핑계로 글을 안쓰게 될까봐 2010년 동안은 처음 테마로 유지하는걸로 기조를 바꿨지요. 아, 이 갈대 같은 마음.

그런데, 저는 5월 3일부터 새로운 회사 - 물론 지금도 아주 매우 재밌게 잘 다니고 있는 현재 직장 - 에 입사를 했습니다. 일에 대한 무한 애정[;;]은 저의 무한 귀차니즘으로 이어졌고, 처음 블로그를 오픈하며 세운 야심찬 계획은 싹 사라져버리고.. 슬픈일이죠. 반성하겠습니다;;;

비록 작년엔 귀차니스트의 면모를 유감없이 발휘했더라도 어쨌든 이 공간은 엎지 않고 쭉 가져갈거니까요, 초반 계획대로 우선 2011년을 맞아 블로그 디자인을 바꿨습니다. 하나 다른게 있다면 이번엔 메인 프레임 고르고 커스텀 하는데 시간을 좀 들였다는거지요. 결론은, 이번 2nd Edition 디자인이 상당히 맘에 든다는 것과, 아마 당분간 블로그 룩에는 손대지 않을 거라는 뜻입니다.

이젠 아이폰 메모 속에서만 꼭꼭 잠겨있는 포스팅거리가 빛을 볼 타이밍이 된 것 같네요.

쫄쫄 굶은(?) 블로그와 이제까지 제 글을 봐주시는 분들에게 제가 보고 듣고 겪었던 조각들을 계속 나누려고 합니다. 올해도 실망시켜 드리지 않고 팔레트에 이런저런 물감을 팍팍 풀어보겠습니다 :)

[Inside Paul Smith: his Art, his Photography, his World]

I've been very fond of Paul Smith accessories. Particularly his signature color striped logo kinda matches this blog title: the color palette. Although I acknowledged Paul Smith as one of the most significant British designer of all times, I didn't research much about his life - where and how he found his inspirations.

Since this exhibition was held near by my place (Tong-Eui Dong: you can find more pictures in my past posting), I thought this would be great for a nice, easy walk.

FYI: Daelim Contemporary Art Museum is actually quite small and cozy, so you can browse through the entire section (including watching all 3 movie clips - two of them are interviews) in an hour. So.. this ain't Louvre. If you're up for quiet weekend leisure, you'd probably enjoy this.

Exhibition is divided into 4 themes:
- Paul's Art Collection
- Paul's Shooting Shots
- Paul's Stamped Objects
- Paul's Office

Surprisingly (or maybe not), Paul Smith and I share a lot in common for the taste of collection and everything else. He didn't really have specific criterion - he collected what he liked, he took shots of what he thought interesting. Plus, it was relieving to see that he had a messy office, all sorts of books and toys piled up. That was really good excuse to tell my mom that I have my order in this chaos... whatever.

저는 폴스미스의 Color Stripe 로고를 상당히 좋아합니다. 뭔가 제 블로그 제목(="Color Palette")과도 일맥상통하는 것이.. 그런 저의 편애취향과, 폴스미스가 시대를 넘어서 가장 영향력 있는 영국 디자이너 중 한 명이라는 것을 인정하면서도 의외로 저는 이 분에 대해 잘 아는게 없더군요;; 그의 인생 스토리나, 어디서 영감을 얻어 디자인을 하는 것인지.. 이런 부분에 대해서요.

마침 폴스미스 관련 전시를 제가 사는 동네 근처[!!]에서 한다는 이야기를 듣고 강을 건너지 않고도 할 수 있는 괜찮은 주말놀이겠다 싶어서 놀러가 봤습니다. (통의동에 위치해있답니다. 더 많은 사진을 보시려거든 제 통의동 포스팅을 찾아보세요)

참고로, 전시가 열린 대림미술관은 그다지 크지 않답니다. 모든 작품 및 상영해주는 인터뷰 동영상 및 비디오 아트까지 다 봐도 한 시간이면 전시를 다 볼 수 있습니다. 잠깐 짬을 내서 슥 전시 보고, 커피 마시고, 조용히 산책하는 걸 좋아하신다면 적극 추천해드립니다 :)

전시는 네 가지 주제로 나뉘어 있습니다:

- 폴아저씨(할아버지?-_-;)의 예술작품 컬렉션.

- 폴아저씨가 직접 찍은 사진들.

- 익명의 팬들이 폴아저씨에게 보내준 물건들. (별의별 물건들을 포장하지 않은 채, 그 위에 우표를 붙이고, 폴아저씨의 주소를 써서 보낸 것들입니다. 서핑보드나 망가진 마네킹도 있어요;)

- 폴아저씨의 사무실 전경

놀랍게도 (아, 위에서 Color Palette 얘기를 했으니 놀랄 만한건 아닐지도), 저와 폴아저씨의 취향은 상당히 비슷하더군요. 특별한 기준 없이 그냥 자신이 좋아하는 것들을 모으고, 재밌어보이는 것들을 사진으로 남기고.. 무엇보다 폴아저씨의 사무실이 그닥 정돈된 모습은 아니었다는 것에 큰 위안을 받았지요. 온갖 잡동사니의 혼돈(-_-)속에서도 나름 저 자신만의 규칙이 있다는 저의 단골 멘트를 잔소리 들을 때마다 엄마에게 피력할 수 있게 됐습니다...음..;

As some of you already have noticed, I've been pretty caught up in daily affair. (You can easily notice this if you're on twitter and realize my tweet frequency has been dropped to nearly 1/10 of past 3 months) Yet, no worries. I'm filling my days with meanings, happiness, and invaluable life lessons.

So.. 'tis time of the year, JUNE! Nope, sorry, not talking about the World Cup.
My birthday was June 8, and I turned 24 this year. This year's bday was bit extraordinary, because one of my close college friends passed away two days before my birthday. Attending his funeral on my birthday was beyond feeling weird, it rather felt surreal. We planned huge birthday party (and watching the World Cup together) on coming weekend. Then all sudden, everything was just a mess.

Although I didn't throw as many bday parties like the years before, birthday still means a lot to me - especially I'm the person who takes life as a celebration. I did my own little treasure hunt of going through my old photo albums and found pictures from my past bday parties. It's my tribute to 24 years of my fantastic life and the people who cared and supported me throughout the years. Special thanks to those of you who partied like it was YOUR birthday. Thank you for being a part of my celebration.

몇몇 분들은 이미 눈치채셨겠지만, 요즘 정말 정신 없이 하루를 보내고 있습니다. 제 블로그에 오시는 분들 중에 제 트위터 팔로워이신 분들은 더더욱 금방 눈치채실 수 있을거에요. 트윗하는 빈도수가 눈에 띄게 줄었거든요.. 10분의 1 정도? 하지만 걱정하지 않으셔도 됩니다. 하루하루 의미있게, 행복하게, 가끔은 가치로 매길 수 없는 배움을 얻으며 즐겁게 살고 있거든요. 인생에 끌려다니지 않고, 주도적으로 살고 있습니다.

제 근황은 이 정도로 접어두고.. 드디어 기다리고 기다리던 6월이 도래했다가.. 지나가버렸네요. 에, 월드컵 얘기를 하려는게 아니에요..;;;

6월 8일은 제 생일이었습니다. 올해 만 24살이 되었지요. :)
다른 해에 비해서 이번 생일은 많이 다르게 보냈습니다. 6월 6일, - 그러니까 제 생일 이틀 전 - 친한 대학 선배가 불의의 사고로 갑작스레 세상을 떠났거든요. 제가 가장 힘들었던 시기에 저를 도와줬던 가까운 선배였기 때문에, 사실 이 글을 쓰고 있는 지금도 잘 실감이 나지 않습니다. 결국 저는 제 생일날 그 선배의 장례식에 참석했고 오빠를 보내줘야 했지요. 이건 뭐 슬프고 정신 없는걸 떠나서.. 비현실적이라고 해야하나.

돌아오는 주말에 제 생일파티를 하면서 그리스전을 함께 보길 했었는데, 정말 한순간에 모든게 제가 어떻게 손을 댈 수 없을 정도로 엉망이 됐습니다. 제 일상, 감정, 모든 것이..

결국 이런저런 일 때문에 해마다 실천(?)해오던 "생월(生月)"파티 릴레이는 하지 못했지만, 여전히 생일은 저에게 큰 의미가 있습니다. 특히나 제가 애정해 마지 않는 노홍철 오라버니처럼 인생을 축제로 여기는 저 같은 사람에게 생일은 엄청난 일이죠. 이 정신 없는 와중에도 직접/전화/트위터/페이스북/이메일.. 모든 채널로 잊지 않고 제 생일을 축하해주신 분들 덕에 갑자기 떠오른 아이디어! 집에 쌓아놓은 앨범을 뒤지면서 나름 혼자만의 "생일 기념 보물찾기 행사(?)"를 해봤습니다. 바로바로.. 과거 생일파티 사진 찾기!

그 중 몇 장을 여러분들과 나눠보려 합니다. 그야말로 빤따스띡(?) 했던 지난 24년의 삶과 그 시간 동안 함께해주시고, 저를 걱정해주시고, 힘이 되어주셨던 분들에게 드리는 작은 선물이자, 제 시간의 기록들입니다.

특히 사진 속에서 저와 함께 제 생일을 축하해주신 분들, 진심으로 고맙습니다.
제 인생의 축제 속에서 기억될 중요한 부분을 채워주셔서 감사합니다.

ode to spring: Youido (여의도)

Here's my another favorite Seoul moment.

Granting that I'm nearly allergic to pink (yes, it goes beyond disliking the color), it's quite surprising that these cherry blossom shots are one of my favorites taken by me. I felt dizzy - in a good way - standing in flood of cherry blossom petals.

This year's spring was even shorter than usual, so as the annual cherry blossom fest in Youido. Thanks to FreeTEMPO's new album, Life, I wasn't too lonely walking by myself. It actually felt pretty good. Everything seemed to be just right. Wind. Scent. Sun. River. Nonetheless, this perfect-looking scene still had a missing part - at least in my sight.

My wish, which I have waited for a year, did not come true. Maybe I was too desperate. If someone wants something way too desperate, it usually doesn't happen the way that s/he has expected. Goes same to me, I guess.

내가 태어나고 처음 15년을 보낸 곳임에도 낯설었던 곳.

이미 훌쩍 커버린 채로 돌아온 이 곳에 마음을 붙이게 해준 기억과 장소를 공개합니다.

저를 개인적으로 아시는 분은 들으셨겠지만, 저는 분홍색을 끔찍이도 싫어합니다. 지인들이 저에게 [핑크알레르기]있다고 할 정도니 상당히 심각한 편이라는건 이해가 가실겁니다. 그럼에도 지금 보고 계신 벚꽃 사진은 제가 찍은 수많은 사진 중에 가장 아끼는 사진입니다. 이 사진을 찍으면서 살짝 어지러웠던 기억이 나네요. 바람이 불면서 벚꽃잎이 날려서 그랬나봐요.

올 봄은 유난히도 짧았고, 매해 열리는 여의도 벚꽃축제도 그만큼 짧았습니다. 다행히 FreeTEMPO의 신보 "Life"의 노래들을 들으면서 걸었기에 혼자 걷는 벚꽃길이 그렇게 외롭지는 않았던 것 같습니다. 오히려, 음악도 완벽했고 그 시간 자체는 오랜만에 느껴보는 여유와 행복이었습니다. 지금도 FreeTEMPO의 "Heart"를 들으며 눈을 감으면 그 때 내 눈앞에 펼쳐졌던 풍경과 느낌을 다시 회상할 수 있을 정도로.

누가 봐도 그 날 오후는 모든게 완벽하고 적절했습니다. 바람, 향기, 햇살, 강.. 그럼에도 소심한 저에게는 빠진 부분이 너무 크게 느껴졌습니다.

제가 1년을 기다려온 소원은 결국 이 날 이루어지지 않았습니다. 사실 아주 작은 바램이었는데, 너무 간절히 원해서 그랬었나봐요. 원래 너무 간절히 원하는건 이루어지지 않는다잖아요.

여튼, 그렇게 무심히 가버린 올 봄과 벚꽃은
내년에도 또 오고, 꽃도 다시 피었다 지겠지요.

One Day on Earth

One of the USC alumni - Mr. Brandon Litman, executive producer - posted some information about this project on the LinkedIn discussion forum of USC alumni networking group, and I'd love for you to be involved. The project is called One Day on Earth.

Basically, this project aims to create an online time capsule created by worldwide community. At the center of this project is a documentary that represents the people, cultures, and experiences from every country in the world. This film covers the 24-hour period of 10/10/10.

One Day on Earth has recruited over 1000 filmmakers in over 140 countries and will expand to tens of thousands before October 10th. The project is free and open to all - from filmmakers with professional equipment to regular people using their cell phone cameras to shoot a short sequence. The goal is to empower people from every corner of the globe to participate in telling the world’s story on 10/10/10.

So, what will be filmed? Everything. Our goal is to accurately document one day on earth. We want to capture what matters most to the individual. Both extraordinary and everyday experiences will be recorded. By participating in this historic event, you will help capture the diversity of life and culture on this planet. Together we will create a document that is a gift to the world. The flagship of this project is a 120-minute documentary to be released theatrically.

Plus, this project was presented at the United Nations 2 weeks ago and we have hopes to collaborate with the UN on documenting the Millennium Development Goals.

지난번의 Blue Butterfly Project에 이어서 제가 참여하는 또 다른 프로젝트에 대해 소개해드리려고 합니다. 제 대학 동문 중 한명이 LinkedIn의 USC 동문 포럼에 글을 남긴 것을 보고 참여하게 된 프로젝트인데요, 그닥 어렵지도 않고 상당히 재밌을 것 같아서 한국 쪽 참가자를 늘리고자 여러분께 알려드려요. 프로젝트명(名)은 One Day on Earth입니다.

이름 그대로, 이 프로젝트는 지구의 하루를 기록으로 남기는 것이 목적입니다. 일종의 타임캡슐이라고 할까요? 2010년 10월 10일, 24시간 동안 지구 모든 곳에서 일어나는 이야기를 여과 없이 담아내는 다큐멘터리를 제작합니다.

현재 프로젝트에 참가하는 사람은 140여개국, 1000명의 전문 영상제작자들을 비롯, 실제 프로젝트 실행일인 10월 10일까지 전세계의 수많은 사람들이 참여할 예정입니다. 본인이 사용하실 수 있는 영상 장비를 동원하셔도 좋고요, 그냥 지금 쓰시는 핸드폰 열어서 3분짜리 동영상만 찍으셔도 괜찮습니다. 중요한건 전세계의 모든 사람들에게 10월 10일 하루, 자신만의 고유한 이야기를 전할 수 있는 기회를 부여하는 것이죠.

촬영 대상에 제한이 있을까요? 없습니다! 정말 아무거나 찍으셔도 돼요.

위에서도 설명 드렸듯이, 10월 10일 하루에 벌어지는 기쁨, 슬픔, 승리, 좌절 등 일상에서 일어나는 모든 일을 여과 없이 그대로 담아내는 것이 이 프로젝트의 목적입니다. 남녀노소 구분 없이 개개인 모두가 주인공이 되고, 참가자들은 2010년 자신이 살았던 그 순간의 인생과 문화에 대해 후세에 전하는 기회를 얻게 됩니다. 또 다르게 생각해보면 자신이 꼭 전해야 하는 메세지를 전할 수 있는 기회가 될 수도 있겠죠. 현재 등록되어 있는 한국 참가자 중 한 분은 독도에 대한 영상을 찍겠다고 하셨더라구요.

저는 뭐랄까, 꼭 무슨 원시인이 되어서 벽화 남기는 기분이에요!*-_-* 혹시 아나요, 이거 나중에 어느 나라 학교의 교과서에 실릴지..

모인 영상은 120분 길이의 다큐멘터리로 제작되어 상영될 예정이며, 2주 전 UN을 대상으로 One Day on Earth에 대한 프레젠테이션이 있었습니다. 이 프로젝트가 성공적으로 완수되면 UN의 Millennium Development 과정의 일부로 사용될 수도 있다고 하네요.

CRACKER YOUR WARDROBE, April 2010

Coincidentally, I happened to live in Los Angeles/Hollywood and work in Youido, Seoul - where most mass media (especially TV stations) coverages were shoot. I've appeared in numerous random TV interviews, street snapshot magazines, some Korean soap opera, even in sports newspaper. I was just darn lazy to keep the proof.

I was taking shower this morning, and Andy Warhol's quote suddenly struck my mind. So, I thought it'd be cool to keep track of my own "15 minutes of fame" - it can be random interview, small contribution, column, article, picture.. any type of public media appearance will do fine.

Kicking off, I'll begin with the most recent one.

I was one of the panels for their [120-minutes Discussion] in Cracker Your Wardrobe (fashion magazine), April 2010 issue. This month's topic was about "a guy wearing skirt or leggings."

[120-minues Discussion] is conducted in Naver WestwoodMAN cafe chatroom (http://cafe.naver.com/westwoodman.cafe), on every second Saturday of the month at 10PM. Participants are not fashion experts; rather, this is an opportunity to share different viewpoints on certain fashion-related issue. Thus, there is no right or wrong answer to every topic.

"미래의 모든 사람은 15분 동안 유명해질 것이다." - 앤디 워홀

우연히도, 저는 방송가 근처에서 자주 생활했습니다. 미국에서는 LA/헐리우드 지역에서 대학을 다녔고, 한국에 돌아와서도 첫 직장을 여의도에서 다녔었던 통에, 은근히 TV나 매스컴에 나올 기회가 많았습니다. 당장 기억나는 것만 해도.. 아침방송 인터뷰, 패션잡지의 스트릿 패션 스냅, 방청객 아르바이트도 해봤었고, 드라마 촬영 중 본의 아니게 배경으로 지나갔다던가, 심지어는 연예가중계와 스포츠신문에도 나와 봤습니다. 그 때 마다 지인들이 증거(?)를 찾아줘서 놀림 반 자폭 반(-_-)으로 함께 보곤 했었지요. 하지만 게을러 터져서 저장조차 안하거나 한국에 돌아오면서 다 잃어버린 것 같습니다.

그러다가 오늘 아침 출근 준비를 하며 샤워를 하는데, 갑자기 위에 쓴 "앤디 워홀의 15분"이 생각이 난거에요! 내 자신의 "15분 명성"에 대한 기록을 남기는 것도 나쁘지 않겠단 생각에 오늘부터 생각나는대로, 증거를 찾는대로 쭉 모아보려고 합니다. 랜덤하게 길거리에서 붙잡힌 인터뷰부터 짧게 쓴 칼럼이라던가, 기사까지.. 종류 불문하고 공동의 사람들에게 노출되었던 미디어 안의 제 모습! (이건 무슨 "월리를 찾아라"도 아니고...;;)

첫 기록은, 가장 최근에 했었기 때문에 기억하기도 쉽고 증거를 찾기도 쉬운걸로 시작해보죠.

패션 잡지 Cracker Your Wardrobe (이하 "크래커")의 2010년 4월호, [120분 토론] 코너에 참여했습니다. 4월호의 주제는 "치마 혹은 레깅스를 입는 남자" 였구요.

[120분 토론]은 네이버의 WestwoodMAN 카페 (http://cafe.naver.com/westwoodman.cafe)에서 8~10명의 사람들과 120분 동안 패션에 대한 주제로 토론을 진행하는 것으로, 매달 둘째주 토요일 저녁 10시에 카페 채팅방에서 대화가 이루어집니다. 토론에 참여한 사람들은 패션 전문가도 아니며, 정해진 주제에 대한 정답 없이 각자 다른 생각을 하는 사람들의 의견을 듣기 위해 마련된 자리라고 보시면 됩니다.

Case #1

Confession of Mr. A, CEO of certain company:

"I didn't mean to decrease annual stipend for entry level employees from the beginning. Back in the day, my company used to pay beyond average for entry levels and provided necessary training. But they all left the firm within a year. Why do I have to invest in people who don't see their future here?"

Basically, Mr. A's final decision on entry level salary was caused by an associate B, who left the firm within a year even after getting the above-industry-average salary and comprehensive training. Associate C, D, and E came after many Bs leaving the firm. Not knowing anything about B's story, they simply got paid less. They were discontented with their compensation, so they leave the firm as well. In Mr. A's perspective, associate C,D, and E's resignation only proved his prejudice on entry level employees. Thus, he decided to spend even less on their annual wage.

With more CEOs agreeing with Mr. A, entire industry ends up taking a custom of cutting the starting wage for entry-levels. Associate B's little butterfly flap changed behavior and custom of one industry.

If a newbie in this industry has to blame someone for him or her getting paid less, who would it be?

Blame it on the Butterfly.

Case #2

Mr. Joon-Young Yeo (a.k.a. Hunt), a project manager of Blue Butterfly Project, used to go on annual field trip abroad with his employees, even in recession. One day, he overheard few employees complaining that they would rather take the monetary compensation, instead of going abroad. Since then, he got rid of the field trip program because his original intention wasn't truly accepted.

I believe that one tiny action from a person can significantly influence others,

and ultimately change the world.

Let's assume that I took a company credit card for personal use, paying for my daily caffeine dose. If you merely look at the amount of money spent, this may not be an issue. However, company will eventually find out about this custom of abusing company credit card and decide to get rid of it. It gives me goose bumps to realize that my simple decision can cause damage to thousands of people.

Do you see the point? This ain't a theory.

This is a real life, happening right besides you and me.

Any valuable system that was discontinued,

Any inefficient regulation that was born,

Any compensation that was cut,

Any responsibility that was multiplied..

99% of these problems arose from few users' abuse - not from a decision of dictator.

Every move you make can become a flap of butterfly.

The reason for you

- not getting paid enough,

- not getting awarded with company shares,

- not being able to work flexible hours,

- not being able to go on the trip abroad,

- not being able to enjoy all types of benefit that other company's giving

... blame it on the Butterfly.

Yet, stop and think about it: are we always a victim?

Look back on our own behavior, we somehow flapped our wings everyday, and we might have taken someone's happiness away with our butterfly. We just don't realize that our trivial mistakes may bring a landslide. Just like Mr. A, and associate B.

Nonetheless, this world hasn't ended yet, and it keeps evolving.

Thanks to those who send off the positive side of butterfly.

I've witnessed 2242 people making positive influence,

and I happily decided to become the 2243rd butterfly.

Before we go further, please do not mistake my intention to introduce the Blue Butterfly Project for mere fundraising effort. I'm not forcing anyone to join the Blue Butterfly Project. However, I'd like you to carefully look at the idea itself and make a change with your own butterfly somewhere, someday.

Blue Butterfly is a fundraising project organized by Alumni Association of Yonsei University, School of Business & Economics. Its objective is to provide scholarship for entire Yonsei undergraduate students by every alumni donating a dollar a day. One dollar bill

doesn't worth a pack of cigarette,

doesn't worth a cup of Starbucks coffee,

doesn't even worth a round-trip ticket of the Seoul Subway.

Without a doubt, an $1 bill cannot afford the tuition of entire Yonsei undergrads.

So far, this project sounds utterly infeasible, even nonsensical. But..

If an alumnus donate a dollar a day,

it'll become $30 in a month.

If we have 30 alumni doing so,

one student won't have to worry about his/her tuition for 4 years of their study at Yonsei.

If all Yonsei alumni donate a dollar a day, entire undergrads can attend Yonsei for free.

The very same $1 bill that I've mentioned above

can prevent students to commit suicide only because of not being able to afford their college tuition,

can help students completing their studies instead of abandoning their dream,

can eliminate parents to go bankrupt due to their children's college tuition.

Although I'm not a Yonsei alum, I want to make a change with my own action and decision.

I'm proud to be part of a miracle that no one has ever tried nor succeeded.

Any school, company, government,

Not even Harvard, MIT, and my own alma mater - USC hasn't done this type of project.

My contribution to this projects goes beyond the monetary value. This project aligns with my lifelong commitment to inspire others and pour my passion and effort into fellow human being.

Getting back to the point,

Any sort of your action can influence others significantly.

Your little "flap" can change the world, both in a good and bad way.

Quite scary yet amazing, isn't it?

A serpent from the Garden of Eden did his own "butterfly flap" to Eve, and it permanently changed the history of human being. Without your conscience, you might already did yours today. Is it a positive or negative flap?

사례 #1

A사장님 왈,

"우리 회사는 급여를 상후 하박으로 줄 수 밖에 없어요. 저도 처음엔 신입들 월급 많이 줬는데 기껏 가르쳤더니 1년도 되기 전에 나가버리더라고요. 오래 다니지도 않을 애들한테 뭐하러 위험하게 투자를 해요."

저 옛날 기껏 가르쳤더니 뛰쳐나간 B 직원 때문에 A사장님은 이후 신입사원 월급을 작게 책정했다고 합니다. 작은 월급을 받게 된 신입사원 C,D,E 들은 월급이 짜서 못 다니겠다며 또 뛰쳐나가고, A사장은 "거봐 내 말이 맞지" 하면서 상후 하박을 고수하게 됩니다.

그런 A사장들이 늘어나다보면 업계 전체가 그렇게 변합니다.
그 모든 시스템이 놀랍게도 저 옛날 B가 사소하게 날린 나비 때문이지요.
월급을 적게 받는 신입들은 누구를 욕해야 할까요.

바로 나비입니다.

사례 #2

Blue Butterfly Project의 홍보를 맡고 계신 여준영 대표님께서 회사 살림을 쪼개서 매년 전직원 해외여행을 다녀왔던 시절이 있었다고 합니다.
그런데, 어느 해 몇몇 직원이 "차라리 돈으로 주지"하고 투덜대는 소리를 들으셨고,
속상한 마음에 이듬해부터는 해외여행을 없애셨다고 합니다.

저는
한 사람이 하는 사소한 행동이
다른 사람에게 영향을 미치고
결국은 세상을 바꾼다고 생각합니다.

그건 아주 무서운 일이지요.

만약에 제가 회사 법인카드를 개인적인 용도로 몇 번의 소액 삥땅(?)을 친다면, 그건 액수로만 보면 아주 사소한 일일 수 있습니다. 그런데 그런 사례들 때문에 회사가 법인카드 사용을 금지시키고, 그게 제 후배와 후배의 후배와 또 후배의 후배들 등 수만명에게 피해를 준다고 생각하면 모골이 송연해집니다.

그런데 이건 [나비효과]와 달리, 이론이 아니라 실제입니다.

있다가 없어진 좋은 제도
없다가 생긴 나쁜 통제
많다가 적어진 보상
적다가 많아진 의무의 99%는..

권력자 한 명이 주도한 것이 아니라
수용자 한 두명의 오용, 남용에서 비롯될 때가 많습니다.

사람들 모두가 각자 하는 행동 하나 하나가
다 나비처럼 날아다닌다고 생각했으면 좋겠습니다.

우리가 일상에서 너무도 쉽게 공감하는 "고달픈 월급쟁이의 삶"을 봅시다.

내 초봉이 작고, 내가 회사 주식을 받지 못하고, 내가 아침에 정시 출근해야하고,

내가 단체 해외여행을 가지 못하게 되고, 회사에서 지불해주는 택시를 못 타게 된 이유가

어느 한 두명이 날린 나비에서 비롯되었다고 생각해봅시다. 그야말로 화딱지 나는 일이지요.

그런데, 우리는 늘 피해자일까요? 꼭 그렇지만은 않습니다.

돌이켜 보면 우리도 어떤식으로든 작은 나쁜 나비를 매일 매일 날리고 있습니다.

우리가 날린 나비 한 마리가 멀리 날아가서 나도 모르게 후배의 행복을 박탈했던 적도 많을 겁니다. 다만 우리는 우리의 사소한 오류가 그렇게 커지게 된다는 사실을 모르고 사는 것 뿐이지요. A사장이 그랬고 B씨가 그랬던 것처럼요.

그럼에도 불구하고 세상이 퇴행만 하는건 아닌 까닭은

좋은 나비를 날리는 사람도 그만큼 존재하기 때문입니다.

저는 2242명의 좋은 나비를 날리고 있는 분들을 보았고,

기꺼이 2243번째가 되기로 했습니다.

여기서 잠깐!

제가 Blue Butterfly Project를 소개하는 이유가 "뭐야, 결국 돈좀 내달라는 얘기잖아"라고 생각하지 말아주셨으면 합니다. Blue Butterfly Project에 참가하지 않으셔도 좋습니다.

하지만 이 프로젝트의 아이디어 자체를 들어보시고,

언젠가, 어딘가에서 또 다른 나비를 날릴 수 있는 생각과 시도를 해주셨으면 합니다.

Blue Butterfly Project는 연세대학교 상경대 동문회에서 시작된 새로운 장학기금 마련 프로젝트입니다. (자세한 자료는 공식 웹사이트인 http://www.bluebutterfly.co.kr에서 보실 수 있습니다) 연세대 동문 한 명이 하루에 천 원씩 내서 연세대 후배 학생 전원이 무료로 학교를 다닐 수 있게 하는 것이 목적이지요.

천원짜리 한장.

담배 한 갑도 아닌, 열 가치 값도 되지 않습니다.

스타벅스 커피 한 잔도 아닌, 한 모금 값은 될까요..

지하철 왕복 티켓도 아닌, 편도 기본요금 밖에 안됩니다.

이걸로 연대 재학생 전원의 등록금을 마련해보자고 하십니다.

불가능할 것 같지요? 그런데 말입니다..

졸업생 한 명이 하루에 천 원씩 내면

한 달에 3만원이 모이게 되고,

그런 졸업생 30명이 모이면,

후배 한 명이 4년 내내 등록금 걱정 없이 학교를 다니게 됩니다.

만약 동문 전원이 하루에 천원씩만 모은다면

후배 학생 전원이 무료로 학교를 다니게 되는 기적 같은 일이 벌어집니다.

아까 위에서 말씀드렸던 똑같은 천원짜리 한장이,

학비 때문에 자살하는 학생 없고,

책 대신 쟁반을 들어야 하는 학생 없고,

자식 때문에 빚쟁이 되는 부모도 없는,

꿈 같은 학교를 만들 수 있는 겁니다.

저는 연대 졸업생이 아닙니다. 하지만,

학교도 기업도 정부도,

하버드도 MIT도, 심지어는 제가 졸업한 USC도,

세계 어느 나라에서도 하지 못한 기적 같은 일에 함께 하고 싶어서 참여했습니다.

제가 고생해서 번 돈으로 누군가를 후원한다는 이 의미를

단순 화폐가치로만 환산해서 생각하시면 오산입니다.

그러기엔 제 인생의 가치가 비교도 못할 만큼 크거든요.

(이건 자뻑이 아니라 정말이에요)

그리고, 저는 제가 지원하는 연대생의 멘토이자, 뮤즈가 될겁니다.

그럼 단 한 명에게라도 영감을 주는 사람이 되고 싶다는 저의 바램은 이루어지는 거지요.

더 매력적인 건, 이 친구가 또 다른 사람의 뮤즈가 되는 가능성이 열린다는 사실입니다.

이들은 자아와 주체를 가진 깨인 대학생이 될 것이고,

나아가 본인이 속해 있는 환경도 변화시킬 수 있겠지요.

비약이라고 생각하실지 모르나,

저 개인적으로 Blue Butterfly Project에 참여하는 가장 중요한 이유는

최근 이슈가 된 "김예슬 선언"에 제기된 문제에 대한 해답이

바로 이 프로젝트라고 굳게 믿기 때문입니다.

아무튼 중요한 것은,

내가 하는 행동이 남에게도 영향을 미칠 수 있다는 것.

내가 무심코 한 작은 행동 하나가

세상을 후퇴시키고 진보시키는 나비일 수 있다는 것.

참 무서운 일입니다.

에덴동산에서 뱀의 속삭임이 날린 나비가 세상을 이렇게 바꾸어 놓았습니다.

우리는 오늘 또 무슨 나비를 날리고 있나요.

Tong-Eui Dong (통의동)

Northwest part of Seoul is where I grew up for the first 15 years of my life. It was mostly quiet residence area with some public schools around. Basically, this was a place where people wouldn't plan to make a special visit. Yet, I appreciated its "everyday" peace. Nothing too special, more like "a girl next door" type of attraction.

Then, "Korean chic" trend was hitting everywhere when I came from the States. All sudden, most of my favorite quiet spots in In-Sa Dong, Sahm-Cheong Dong became 'it' place and got crowded with people from everywhere. If you ever have a chance to visit this area, you'll easily spot women in their 20s and/or couples cuddling each other, taking "effortless-ish" pictures - which will be posted in their cyworld. They will anticipate to get jealous comments and praises for finding a "new cool spot" from their friends and visitors. erm... not my thing.

Laws of supply and demand made In-Sa Dong and Sahm-Cheong Dong lose its natural beauty (it's somewhat similar to how SoHo in NYC became extremely commercial). That's why I cherish Tong-Eui Dong even more. Recently, Tong-Eui Dong has appeared in some trendy magazine as a potential 'it' spot. Nonetheless, it still remains quiet, because most people would get lost in an small alley.. Thank Goodness.

So.. these are my little snapshot collages of Tong-Eui Dong findings, on my usual routine for a walk.

16살 때 미국으로 떠나기 전까지는 저는 쭉 서울 북서부 지역에서 자랐습니다. 어딘지 감이 잘 안오신다면.. 지하철 노선도로 치면 좌측 상단에 위치한 동네입니다. 물론 이 때 3호선의 끝은 '대화역'이 아닌 '지축역'이었구요. 잘 아시겠지만 이 동네는 상당히 조용한 주거지역입니다. 띄엄띄엄 동네마다 초등학교 한 두개씩 있는, 사생대회나 백일장은 늘 독립문/경복궁, 소풍은 인왕산/안산/북한산. 이런식입니다. 그러니까, 이 때의 우리 동네 근처는 사람들이 주말이나 휴일에 시간을 내서 찾아오는 곳은 아닌 셈이지요.

지하철 한두정거장은 늘 걸어다니는 걸 좋아하고, 통금시간이 엄한 가정에서 자란 덕에(?) 저는 동네 근처에서 돌아다니는걸 좋아하던 사춘기 소녀였습니다. 당시 가장 친했던 친구녀석이 청운중학교를 다녔고, 은근 좋아했던 오빠가 경복고등학교를 다닌 통에 주 아지트는 경복궁역/안국역 근처였습니다. 이 지역 특유의 일상적인 평온함, 너무 지나치지 않은 적당한 매력을 참 좋아했지요. 사람들도 많지 않아서 골목 하나가 내 것인양 돌아다니는 재미도 있고요.

그런데, 7년이 지나 미국에서 돌아왔을 땐 "한국적인 시크함(?)"이 한창 유행하고 있더라고요. 그 때 깨달았습니다. 내 사춘기 시절을 함께 해줬던 인사동과 삼청동의 아지트는 어느새 '잇 플레이스'가 되었고, 좁디 좁았던 골목은 이제 주말에는 일렬로 줄을 서서 힘겹게 걸어가야 될 정도로 사람들이 꽉꽉 차들었다는 사실을..;;

인사동이나 삼청동을 가보셨거나, 이번 주말에라도 날잡아 가보시게 되면 20대 여성들과 커플들을 찾는건 어려운 일이 아닐 겁니다. 여기저기서 들리는 수다 소리, "의도되지 않은 듯한, 자연스런" 사진을 찍는 모습들.. 아마 그 사진들은 그 분들의 싸이로 업데이트 되고, 이런저런 댓글들을 받을 것을 기대하겠지요. ("어머, 완전 잘나왔어!", "여기 어디야? 완전 이쁘다.. 나도 가봐야지!" 등등)... 나쁘다는건 아니지만, 이미 삐져버린 저의 좁디 좁은 마음은 어쩔 수가 없더군요. '이 동네는 원래 이런 곳이 아니었다구!!' 하면서요. 수요와 공급에 의해 결국 인사동과 삼청동은 제가 생각하던 자연스런 아름다움을 잃은 것 같아 안타깝습니다. (뉴욕의 소호가 상업화된 것처럼) 그러다보니 이제 유일하게 남은 통의동을 더 예뻐하게 된 것은 당연한 수순일지도...

물론 최근들어 통의동도 패션잡지 등에서 "삼청동에 질린 당신을 위한 새로운 잇 플레이스" 등으로 가끔 소개 되고 있지만.. 다행히 아직 사람이 바글바글 하지는 않습니다. 그 잡지에 나온 곳들 찾으려면 골목골목 사이를 엄청 돌아다녀야 되거든요. 차도 가지고 다닐 수 없고, 길 잃으실 확률 100%입니다. 혹시나 로맨틱한 데이트를 생각하고 힐 신고 나오셨으면 짜증은 배가 되실테니 주의하시길. 뭐, 제 밴댕이 속알머리 입장에서는 통의동의 자잘한 골목들에게 "쌩유!!"를 외쳐주고 싶은 맘이지만요.ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

어쨌든.. 마음이 동해서 카메라를 함께 들고 간 따뜻한 봄날,

평소에 걷던 산책길에서 찾은 통의동의 조각들을 나눠봅니다.

10 years ago (I was 14 years old), I used to be a diligent, vigorous "early-stage" blogger. Although whole blogging experience brought me new opportunities and friends, I found myself caging into fixed image according to my readers' expectation. Plus, I had hard times dealing with my own insecurity about how some people explicitly disagreed with me on certain issues. I ended up closing my website as I began college.

Yet, I've always been meaning to create a new blog someday. Then I got too serious. I was too busy to come up with my own template design. Countless advices on "How to be a Famous, Powerful Blogger" said that I should concentrate on specific topic, but there were just way too many interesting stuff on this planet. Soon, my intention to have my own space became a project, giving me different types of headache.

Basically, it took me TEN years to write this post. What was I thinking?

- It's my favorite number.
- Random trivia: Koreans (and some other Asians) do not like the number four, just like the Western culture avoid the number thirteen. Number four's pronunciation is a homonym to the one of "death" in Chinese character.
- Number four repeatedly appears in all sorts of ID numbers that I've been ever assigned.
- Coincidentally, my brother's jersey number (he's a soccer player) always has been number four.

10년 전 - 그러니까 제가 15살 때 - 저는 "얼리어답터"격의 파워 블로거였습니다. 당시 교환유학생도 흔하지 않았고, 미국 오클라호마 생활에 대해 쓰는 사람은 더더욱 없었기에 나름 꽤 유명해졌습니다. 강의도 다니고 칼럼도 쓰고.. 블로깅을 하면서 많은 기회와 새로운 인연을 얻으면서 한편으로는 신기해했던 기억이 나네요.

그런데 문제는 엉뚱한 곳에서 발생했습니다. 아직 자아정체성이 확고하지 않던 그 시절의 저는 저도 모르게 방문하시는 분들이 원하시는 모습으로 "이미지 관리"를 하고 있더라고요. 게다가 방문자가 늘어나면서 악플도 겪어보고, 몇몇 이슈에 대해서는 드러내고 반대의 의견을 표명하는 분들이 생기기 시작했습니다. 뭐랄까, "모두를 행복하게 해줄 수 없다"라는 사실에 맞닥뜨린 저는 결국 대학 진학과 동시에 웹사이트를 폐쇄했습니다.

엄청난 스트레스를 겪긴 했었지만, 그 후에도 늘 다시 블로그를 시작해야겠다는 생각은 해왔습니다. 내가 정말 쓰고 싶은 주제에 대해 쓰는 내 공간을 갖는건 상당히 매력적인 일이니까요. 근데 이번에는 또 지나치게 심각해졌습니다. 한국에 돌아와서 직장생활을 하던 저는 전처럼 블로그 디자인에 시간을 쏟기도 어려웠고, 아이디어에 대해서 고민해볼 시간조차 없었던거죠. 게다가 블로그는 어느새 유행이 되어 산더미처럼 쏟아져 나오고, 수많은 "파워블로거가 되는 법"에 대한 조언에는 세분화된 주제를 쓰라고 하는데.. 지구상에는 재미있는게 너무 많은거에요!! 결국, '즐기면서 내 공간을 만들자'라던 초반의 의지는 어느새 프로젝트성 일거리가 되어 있었고, 전과는 다른 류의 두통에 시달리게 됐습니다. 첫 포스팅을 차일피일 미뤄지고.. 귀차니즘에 시달리고..

뭐 결국, 제가 하려던 얘기는..

이 포스팅 하나 쓰는데 10년이 걸렸다는 겁니다.

대체 전 뭘 그렇게 고민했던걸까요...;;;

#1. 제목: 왜 하필 숫자 4?

- 완전 단순한 이유: 제가 제일 좋아하는 숫자에요.

- 한국사람들을 비롯한 대부분의 동양인들이 재수 없다고 숫자 '4'를 싫어해도 뭐 그닥.
그렇다고 서양사람들처럼 숫자 13을 특별히 싫어하지도 않아요.

(주민번호, 학번, 기숙사, 축구부 시절 백넘버 등등)

- 우연히도, 현재 경남FC에서 프로 축구선수로 뛰고 있는 제 동생의 등번호도 쭉 4번이었답니다.

#2. 주제.

- 기억할 수 있는 아주 어릴적부터 지금까지 미(美), 그리고 그 아름다움에 대한 표현 방식에 관심이 많았던 관계로, 음악/패션/사진/미술/여행/뷰티/디자인.. 제 삶에 영감을 주는 작은 컬렉션이라고 봐주시면 될 듯 합니다.

- ...그것 말고도 제가 쓰고 싶은건 다 쓸겁니다. 내 맘이니까요.

저에 대한 몇 가지 사소한 사실,

- 노래하고 춤추고 가끔 바이올린 연주하는걸 좋아하는 피아니스트.

- 카페인 중독자. 인정해야겠습니다.

- 혼혈로 자주 오해를 받습니다 (그것도 구체적으로. 50% 일본인+50% 백인) 친가, 외가를 통틀어 우리 가족 중 처음으로 외국에 산 사람이 저인데다가, 전 김씨. 심지어 우리 엄마도 김씨. 개인적으로 전 상당히 '한국적'으로 생긴 것 같은데. 아닌가봅니다.
