ingredients:
1 cup (2 sticks) of unsalted butter
1 cup Light Brown Sugar
1 Bag of Mini Pretzels
12-oz Bag of Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
Sea Salt
Preparation:
1. Wrap a baking sheet with aluminum foil.
2. Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. As it melts cover the baking sheet in a even layer of mini pretzels. ( You may not use the entire bag.)
3. Once t he butter is melted, add the sugar and stir to incorporate. Allow the sugar and butter to softly simmer and bubble, but don;t let it boil. so adjust the heat accordingly. Stir occasionally. The browning process's should take about three minutes from when it starts to bubble.
4. Once the sugar and butter have caramelized pour the mixture evenly over the pretzels on the baking sheet. Pouring it back and forth down the length of the sheet works well. The caramel hardens pretty quickly so it;s important to pour it as evenly as possible from the start. If you end up with any clumps, just use a spatula to spread the caramel as best you can. Bake the pretzel-caramel mixture in the oven for 5-7 minutes.

I am a grandma of 13, 1 more on the way in 3 weeks, so 14 grandchildren.

I took 7 of my grandchildren, that live close by, to the movie, Home. In our town we have a cinema complex that is really cool, you bring your own containers and you can get popcorn and drinks at refill prices. So we gathered our popcorn buckets and drink containers and headed out for an evening of fun.

This tells you a little about the movie Home:

After an alien race called the Boov conquer the Earth, they relocate the planet's human population -- all except for a little girl named Tip, who's managed to hide from the aliens. When Tip meets a fugitive Boov called Oh, there's distrust between both. However, Oh is not like his comrades; he craves friendship and fun. As their friendship develops, the pair set out together to find Tip's mother, but, unbeknown to them, the Gorg -- enemies of the Boov -- Are coming to get them.

The movie was very cute. All my grandkids were so excited. Each one was telling me their favorite parts.

If you have kids this is a movie to see.

The true story of one man's amazing journey from a homeless and hopeless childhood to a life of conversion and faith.

The story starts in the spring of 1948 when Bernard Poduska and his family was evicted from their home in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Bernard was eight year old at the time, it tells of his family hitchhiking across the country trying to find a place to call home. It tell of the hard times, and the suffering they went through. It also tell of how Bernard, being an atheist, finds God. This is a quote from the book. " you will never know what's on down the road until you've made the journey; be grateful for any rides others may give you along the way, and whatever your destination, the journey is everything-- make the most of it."

I enjoyed this book, it is very different than the run-of-the-mill books. I incourage everyone to give it a try.

Then I got brave and bought a few more. I have had an exciting adventure learning more about them and how to use them.

I'm not sponsoring any company, I feel like there are several good brands. Do your own research and find what you like the best.

I would like to share a recipe for a oil blend to relieve Stress.

Stress Relief

4 drops Lavender

4 drops Clary Sage

4 drops Vetiver

4 drops Citrus

2 drops Geranium

Put in roller bottle, fill with coconut oil, shake to mix well. Enjoy.

I hope this works for you, I will be adding new oil blends alone with recipes for different items in future posts.

I have another cute hairstyle tutorial for everyone.

First part the hair down the middle from the forehead to the nape of the neck.

French braid three braids on each side of the head.

place an elastic around the ends of all three braids, creating one ponytail.

Braid the ponytail and loop the end up into the top elastic.

I am So sorry about the pictures for this style. When I get into my little hairstyle world, I forget that I am supposed to be taking pictures as I am going. Fortunately this hairstyle is fairly self explanatory.

First start with a part, either on the side or down the center. then french braid on each side from the front to the back of the head.

Create three pony tails at the back of the head. Make sure they are close together so your messy buns will be seamless.

Then make messy buns from each ponytail. For messy bun instructions go here.

You can use bobby pins in places there may be holes.

Finish with hairspray. Embellish how ever you wish.

So this morning we painted our fingernails. I didn't do a very good job screwing the top of the fingernail polish bottle back on, and my youngest painted her hair while I was doing her sisters hair. Thank goodness for nail-polish remover! It came right out, but it did make me chuckle a little. Most of the time I can laugh about the things children get into, occasionally it can be too much for me though. :) I am sure, that most mothers can say the same.

After taking care of the polish in her hair, I quickly rolled three little rolls, off a side part, and secured them with bobby pins.

I flipped her hair up with a large barreled curling iron, and VOILA a darling little hairdo, in less than 5 minutes. Quick and easy, that's how she likes them.

If you have been fallowing along with our blog posts, I told about a library workshop that was called "Oh Fudge". The library runs this workshop every year in November and they give out new recipe ideas. This is a fun recipe for the holidays.

Thousand Dollar Bars

Shortbread Layer

1 cup (2 sticks) salted butter
at room temperature

1 cup confectioners' sugar

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

2 cups All-purpose Flour

Caramel Layer

2 cups caramel, cut into small chunks

3 Tablespoons heavy cream

Chocolate Layer

3 cups chopped milk chocolate or dark chocolate,, melted

1 Tablespoon Vegetable shortening (optional)

1) FOR THE CRUST: Preheat your oven to 300 degrees. Spray a 9"x 13" pan lightly with cooking spray, or line with parchment and set aside.

2) In a medium-sized bowl, beat together the butter, sugar and vanilla. Add the flour. At first the mixture may seem dry, but will come together as you continue to beat at medium speed.

3) Take the dough (it will be somewhat stiff) and press it evenly into the pan Lightly flouring your fingertips this will help with any sticking.

4) Prick the crust all over with a fork. The holes will allow steam to escape and the crust will bake evenly with fewer bubbles.

5) Bake the crust until it's lightly golden brown on top and the edges are deeper golden brown, about 35 to 45 minutes. Remove from the oven and immediately run a knife around the edges to loosen the crust. Set it aside to cool completely.

6) FOR THE CARAMEL LAYER: Melt the caramel and cream over low heat in a small sauce-pan. Pour the caramel over the cooled crust and set in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to chill and firm up.

7) FOR THE CHOCOLATE LAYER: Melt the milk or dark chocolate slowly in a double boiler or over very low hear. If it seems very thick, add a tablespoon of shortening to thin it. Pour evenly over the chilled caramel layer and spread to cover all of the caramel. Return to the fridge until the chocolate is well set. Cut into 2" x 2" squares to serve. It's best to store these bars in the refrigerator.

8) These bars can also be cut and dipped in milk chocolate to resemble Twix Bars . After the caramel layer has chilled firm, cut down the length of the pan, splitting the bars into two long, narrow bars. Then cut each long strip into "fingers". Dip the chilled bars into melted chocolate and place on parchment paper to set for several hours.

Try this recipe and let me know how you like it.

I really wanted a wreath for my door, one of those full, green ones with ornaments on it. While I was at hobby lobby, I saw a few that I really liked. Then I saw the prices: $109. 00 for a decorated wreath. WOW! Even with the 50% off sale, the wreath STILL would have cost over $50.00. That was WAY more than I wanted to spend. Since I didn't want to spend so much money, and making crafts is such a fun hobby, I decided to make my own. Final cost was just under $25, plus I had a lot of fun putting it together. I think it turned out really pretty.

First I started with a 30" plain green wreath that I got at hobby lobby. Origional cost was 24.99, but at 50% off it was $12.00

I bought 8 decorative picks with forest greenery, to help fill out the wreath a little.

I also chose different sizes, to give the wreath some dimension. The picks were also 50% off at hobby lobby.

I played around with the positions of the picks, until I found the look I wanted. Then I glued them on with a hot glue gun.

Then I took some ornaments that I already had and positioned those along the wreath, then hot glued them in place.

I bought two of these berry branch picks to fill in the spaces a little.

I broke each little berry stem off the main branch, and glued them in the places that needed a little something. Then I hung a ribbon from the back of the wreath.

I am not that great at photography. :) This wreath looks WAY prettier in real life. I couldn't believe how EASY it was, and it only took me about 30 minutes to make. I hope if you don't have a cute Christmas holiday wreath, you can see how easy it is to craft one. The possibilities are ENDLESS, you can make it as simple or extravagant as you want. So go have fun, and do some crafting.

Memories

All morning I have been thinking of my sweet little grandmas. Both of my grandmas passed on quite a while ago. They were both strikingly different, one lived in town and the other lived on a farm. I would like to share some stories about them, in a blog series called "Memories", that are so inspiring and demonstrate how amazing they were. Today, I would like to tell you about my "Town Grandma". I remember this grandma was an "old grandma", she was born on August 24, 1879, so when I was almost 6 ( just before she passed on) she was in her 70's. Even though she died just before my 6th birthday it is amazing how much I remember about her. Maybe it was because she was truly my best friend.

I want to share a story about her from the early 1900's

The year was 1913, Katie Nye Hodgkinson was a young mother of two little boys. She and her husband was a happy family living in a small little cabin just off the main road of 500 East in Vernal Utah. One day her husband Albert receives a letter from the LDS church headquarters which ask if he would serve a two year full-time mission in the eastern states of Kentucky and Tennessee. Back in those days they served their missions without purse or script. This meant that they went without money and very little previsions, mainly the cloths on their back. While my Grandfather was gone serving his mission. My Grandma lived with her two little boy in her cabin alone. She was a very resourceful woman. During that time, she would take in laundry and ironing to provide for her little family. One evening she was in her cabin getting the boys ready for bed. She heard a noise coming from outside, a screeching howling sound. She goes to the front door, opens it, in the darkness she could see an object with a long tail running down the road. She couldn't tell exactly what it was, but she was very frightened and protective of her two little boys. The next morning she heard from her neighbor, Mr. Sessions, that when he came home the night before he had seen a mountain lion around his house. This one small story is an example of strength and courage to me, my grandma (whom I called Gram) had the ability to endure hardship, served others with faith and love, and endured to the end with dignity.

Because our heritage is so important to us, we like to display them throughout our home, This is a memory box that my daughter made for a 4-H project. She took a preshaped box that you get from the craft store. She tore up small pieces of scrapbook paper and Modge-Podged them to the box. She also Modge-Podged the picture. (It was a picture I scanned on to my computer and printed ) Then she embellished it with lace. She got a purple ribbon at our local county fair and a blue ribbon from the state fair. Do any of you have amazing stories of your ancestors? Leave a comment and tell us about them. We would love to read them.
So I LOVE Physicians Formula products!

A few months ago, I was looking at my self in the mirror, and I came to grips with the fact that I am aging. Although I am only 28, the stresses of raising two children (and sometimes a husband) is really starting to take its toll on my skin. I then decided I needed to switch up my normal skin care routine, to allow for some magical anti-aging products. ;) Being a licensed cosmetologist, I had access to a plethora of skin care products. However the nearest beauty supply shop is a 20-30 minute drive from my house. Since I felt I needed the help immediately, (silly I know) I decided to give the good old Walmart a shot. I felt relatively sure that with my knowledge of ingredients that I could find something that would do.

I find that I am VERY happy that I did decide to try out Walmart. Physicians Formula just came out with this fabulous anti-aging set.

You still can't find it in some Walmarts. Don't worry though, you can find it on Amazon, for about the same price you pay at Walmart. I purchased mine in a promotional set of 4 products. The set consisted of : the wrinkle corrector and firming cleanser, the wrinkle corrector and firming moisturizer with spf 15.
the deep wrinkle corrector day and night cream, and the intensive wrinkle corrector firming eye cream.
Now just so we are clear, the ONLY type of cream that will actually reduce wrinkles can only be obtained through a Physician. Those products contain a high dose of Retinoic acid or retinol that boost collogen production. Even if the labels say it contains retinol, save your money, because there isn't enough retinol in that cream to work. So if you are looking for true wrinkle correction, this product ISN'T what you are looking for. Your going to have to go see your dermatologist for that! If you are looking for wrinkle prevention, this product is a good candidate. The reason why? Because this set has the best moisturizing capabilities I have EVER found. I have VERY dry skin, after using this set on my face my skin feels so soft and smooth. It leaves my skin feeling moisturized for hours after.
The cleanser:

the cleanser does NOT lather very much, but that is fine. It is actually a good sign, because lather means the the product is very basic with a ph level closer to 8 to 10. Harsh soaps like hand soap and such will have ph levels that high. The fact that this cleanser has little lather suggest to me that the ph level is lower, closer to 7 ( I haven't tested the ph levels, so this is purely a guess). Which means that the soap is more gentle. I found that when I first started to use this product I broke out. Which is also a good sign, as long as the break out doesn't last longer than a week. It means the cleanser goes deep to penetrate into your pores and pulls the impurities to the surface. If your break out lasts longer than a week, then you are probably allergic to something in the product and you should discontinue use.

The daily moisturizer:

This moisturizer is wonderful! It is the key to the entire set. the MOST IMPORTANT part of your skin care is a moisturizer with an spf of at least 15, 30 would be better. This moisturizer has only an spf of 15 which is enough protection for minimal sun exposure. If planning on being outside a lot, then you will need to double up on sunscreen. UV rays are the #1 cause of wrinkles. So the more you can protect your skin from them the fewer wrinkles you will have.

The day & night cream:

A little bit goes a LONG way! Oh this cream makes my face feel like I smeared butter on it, only better. It is not heavy it is very light, yet the smooth moisture last for a very long time. I did notice that the small wrinkles and fine lines were less noticeable. But they came back again as soon as I stopped using the set. :( so this is definitely NOT a permanent fix.

Eye Cream:

This eye cream is gentle, I even got some in my eye once and it didn't hurt. It did make my fine lines less noticeable, but it also didn't last.

All in all this set is a great preventive skin aging set of products. They are inexpensive, and I believe worth every penny!

C calls this hairstyle a "shell braid" lol, I guess she thinks it looks like a shell. I love this style. because it is so simple, It looks fabulous, and it can be done on adults as well as children.

First you backcomb a section of hair away from the face. At this point your hairstyle should resemble something from the 80's

Then you take a small section of hair at your hairline, just above your ear.

Braid the section until your about 3/4 of the way to the end. Then repeat on the other side.

Secure the braids together to form a headband.

Fudge

We have the most amazing local Library in our town. Every month they have programs in the evening or on Saturdays that are fun and informative. Today we had a program call "Oh! Fudge". This was the eighth year of this particular candy making demo at the Library. However, this is the first year that I attended and I was impressed! Now, I have been married for 37 years and guess how much Christmas candy I have made... ZERO. Yep, I am not a candy maker. But, I think I will try it this year. My husband loves fudge so I think I will surprise him (Boy, after 37 years I think he will be surprised!) The employees of the Library and other community helpers share their favorite candy recipes and demonstrate how to make it. The taste testing that goes along with it, is DEFINITELY a plus. Here is one of the recipes, that I want to share with you.

Chocolate Covered Cherry Fudge by Melinda Barlow

(Bottom Layer: White Cherry Fudge)

3 Cups Sugar
3/4 Cup Butter (1.5 sticks)
2/3 Cup Evaporated Milk
1 12-oz. Package White Chocolate Chips
1 7-oz Kraft Marshmallow creme
1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
2 Jars (approx. 10 ounces each) Maraschino Cherries, drained, rough chopped, and dried thoroughly

Combined sugar butter and milk in heavy 2-1/2 quart saucepan; bring to boil, stirring constantly, until candy thermometer reaches 234 degrees. Remove from heat, stir in chips, marshmallow creme and vanilla. Beat until blended. Gently fold in maraschino cherries, Pour in foil-lined 9" loaf pan. Allow to cool at least six hours in refrigerator.
(Top layer: Milk Chocolate Fudge)

3 Cups sugar
3/4 Cup butter (1.5 sticks)
2/3 Cup evaporated Milk
1 12-oz package milk chocolate chips
1 7-oz jar Kraft Marshmallow creme
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Combine sugar, butter and milk in heavy 2-1/2 quart saucepan: bring to boil, stirring constantly, until candy thermometer reaches 234 degrees . Remove from heat, stir in chips, marshmallow creme and vanilla, Beat until blended. Remove cherry fudge from refrigerator and using a heat-proof spatula, gently pour and spread fudge (about 1/4 cup at a time) on top of cherry fudge. Allow to cool at least six hours in refrigerator. Note: you will probably have leftover milk chocolate fudge unless your loaf man in extremely tall. This not a bad thing .... you can just eat it!

Boston Jane Trilogy

Do you guys remember the Topsy Tail commercials? I don't have Television anymore, do they still show those commercials? Any way today's style involves two rows of Topsy tails.

First part the hair down the center all the way from the for head to the nape of the neck.

Take a small section of hair and put it in a ponytail. Create a small hole in the base of the ponytail with your finger. Twist the end of the ponytail over and into the hole then pull tightly. Repeat these steps until you reach the neck on both sides of the head.

At the end of your row of Topsy tails, tie the hair into a knot and then pin it with bobby pins so the remaining hair falls over the knot.

One of my favorite hobbies is reading. I love to read all types of books. As all of my eight children would tell you, if you need a gift for mom just get her a book and she will be delighted.

Yesterday I finished a book that I thought was very inspiring. The book I chose was " To Heaven and Back" . This book is a True Story wrote by Mary C. Meal, MD.

I will put down a little from the back of the book. "To Heaven and Back is Mary's remarkable story of her life's spiritual journey and what happened as she moved from life to death to eternal life, and back again. Detailing her feelings and surroundings in heaven, her communication with angels, and her deep sense of sadness when she realized it wasn't her times, Mary shares the captivating experience of her modern-day miracle. Mary's life has been forever changed by her new found understanding of her purpose on earth, her awareness of God, her closer relationship with Jesus, and her personal spiritual journey was suddenly enhanced by a first-hand experience in heaven."

My thoughts of this book was very clear, that it was a very spiritual and inspiring book. I enjoyed how easy it was to read, and it is written very well. While I was reading the book I was impressed with her ideas and conclusions. What impressed me the most is her conclusion are basically the same as what I have learned and thought all my life. Life after death has always been clear to me. I really have never questioned it. The reason why, came from my father's near death experience as well, where he has told of the feeling he had as he was entering heaven. I also was impressed as she explains that she knows she is a Child of God and how she felt his love for her.

This book is a fast read. I enjoyed it. There is valuable quotes worth underlining and rereading again and again. I would recommend this book to everyone.

Hope you enjoy!

hairstyle #9 braid buns

Whooa (Big sigh of relief), I am so glad that November is here. Don't get me wrong I love October especially Halloween, but now that I am a grown up person Halloween isn't quite as fun as when I was a kid. Or maybe it is still as fun, but now I have to do all the work to prepare for it.

I love this time of year (really who doesn't?) I love the Beautiful autumn colors, and the slight nippy feeling outside. I love sitting by a cozy fire, and taking really warm baths while the air around me has a slight chill. Most of all I love Thanksgiving, and being around people I love. Well enough of my sentiments, and on to this really cute and simple hairstyle. This style is cute on everyone, and it is very quick. Which is always a plus when your rushing to get a little one ready for school.

First you create two pigtails.

Braid each pigtail

Wrap the braid around the base of the pigtail and secure the tail into the elastic holding the pigtail.

If you are looking for the wow factor in a little girl hairstyle, this is IT! This hairdo is just a dutch braid, or reverse french braid, that spirals all the way around the head, then ends in the center of the back of the head. I finished the style off by making a messy bun out of the ends of the french braid. Seriously the hardest part of this style is getting your little one to hold sill long enough. I let my girls watch a little movie or color a picture while I do their hair, it saves us ALL from the torture of doing hair.

Hey everyone, I am really excited about this product review because this is a definite essential that I need and I know if you try, you will feel the same.

The product is just a simple set of 32 natural hair make-up brushes I found on Amazon for $20.00! I know what you are thinking, they suck and are not real hair, just some cheap synthetic crap that does not work. But I am telling you, they are the best brushes I've used and the fact that each brush is less than a dollar is also great.
:)

So I love these brushes because there are so many of them, I don't have the take the time to wash them every other day because I can use a different brush that is in the set, AND washing them is so simple. They don't loose their shape, smell weird, or get hard and crusty like after you make them sparkly and clean.

The next best thing about these brushes are they are oh so soft, you almost want to just brush them over your face because they feel so good. A very wise woman once told me to always get natural hair brushes instead of synthetic because synthetic hair is like your armpit hair, hard and bristly, but natural hair is soft and touchable like the hair upon your head--I defiinatly want to follow that advice!

This is one of my favorite hair styles I have done on C so far. I just love all the different textures, with the braids, and the knots, and the poofy ponytail in the back. Don't worry I know it looks complicated, but if you follow the steps you will see it is really easy!

Then dutch braid, the hair down to the ear.
