Tim Ferriss shows you how to use a mix of Policosanol, Alpha-lipoic acid, Green tea flavanols and Garlic extract to help you burn fat even faster.

In order for your body to operate it needs energy – lot’s of it actually. For a grown man around 180cm with 80kg it is roughly around 2.500 kcal, depending on the individual’s metabolism.

That is little over 8 Cheeseburgers or 20kg (!!!) of iceberg lettuce without dressing. What your body does, is tranform the food you consume into the energy it needs. If that man eats 2.500 kcal worth of food day in day out, he wouldn’t loose nor gain weight. So what happens when you eat less than that?! Your body starts taking the energy from what it stored, which is primarily fat and muscles. So the way diets work, even this one from the Four Hour Body, is forcing the body to burn fat by eating less than it needs.

Turn classic dietary concepts upside down

If you turn any classic dietary concept upside down you have a new approach. Rather than reducing your caloric intake, some dietary supplements work by stimulating your metabolism. This is usually done by so called thermogenics. As the name suggests these work by raising your body temperature and heartrate over a period of time therefore forcing your body to use more calories. If you watch your eating while doing it, you will loose fat quicker.

To be honest, this approach is not really recommended. Not only is it only a temporary solution, but it can lead to serious addiction and organ damage.

A better way to is described in The 4 Hour Body. The system developed by Tim Ferriss is save and easy on your body. It is describes in the book in the chapter called “The Four Horsemen of Fatloss” named PAGG. The acronym is used to describe the supplements used in PAGG:

P olicosanol: 20–25 mg
A lpha-lipoic acid: 100–300 mg
G reen tea flavanols (decaffeinated with at least 325 mg EGCG): 325 mg
G arlic extract: 200 mg

These are supposed to be taken…

Prior to breakfast: AGG

Prior to lunch: AGG

Prior to dinner: AGG

Prior to bed: PAGG

Protein is your main source of energy and it’s crucial you eat enough of it. About 30 grams within the first 30 minutes of waking in the morning and another 20 grams per meal. While downing three eggs or making chicken breast at 6am is not everybody’s favorite, the best alternative are legumes.

Required Nutrients

Your body needs a lot of different nutrients in order to function healthy and a good way to get most of them are beans. In beans there’s protein, the base for energy and muscle growth, calcium, the main material that your bones are made of, magnesium and potassium, for muscle and nerve function, as well as protein synthesis and flavonoids, to reduce coronary artery disease and cancer.

They have also iron, for growth and development, thiamin, for heart nerves and muscles, phosphorus, for your teeth and bones, zinc and pantothenic acid, for the immune system and growth, pyridoxine, for blood, skin and nervous system. On top of that you can find riboflavin and niacin, that are good for your raspatory systems. As you can clearly see, a lot of what your body needs you can get from legumes. But again, balance is the key to a healthy life – don’t eat the beans exclusively.

Bean Recipes

Although 1.150.000 acres are used for growing beans in the US a lot of people do not know a lot about beans or how to prepare delicious meals with them. From appetizers to soups, to salads, mains and sides – every meal can be bean centric. Some of the best bean recipes in the world can be found in the books of Trish Ross. She’s the pope of bean cooking and has been writing books on the topic since 1996.

Her bestseller Easy Beans: Fast and Delicious Bean, Pea, and Lentil Recipes has been out of print, but is now out as a second edition, with a wide variety of bean dishes, that are fairly easy to prepare. The book covers all there is to know from bean facts like history, nutritional charts and the different varieties. You will learn how to soak and cook them and how to prepare dishes for many occasions.

Peppers with meat is better known as Chili Con Carne and is most certainly one of the most famous dishes in the world today. The most common variations of this dish include beans and tomatoes, but since this is a slow carb variant, we’ll try the whole meal a little different.

Active Cooking Time: 15 minutes
Total Time : 2 hours, 15 minutes
Servings: 4-6

Ingredients:

1 Tbsp olive oil
2 med onions (chopped)
4 cloves garlic (minced)
2 4-oz cans chopped green chilies
2-3 pieces of chicken
2 tsp ground cumin
1.5 tsp dried oregano (crumbled)
¼ tsp cayenne or crushed red pepper
3 16-oz cans, Great Northern beans
(drained and rinsed)
6 cups chicken broth
Salt, pepper

Preparing and cooking is really quick with this dish – the secret ingredients is time – but we’ll get to that in a minute. Prepare all the ingredients as listed above and find the biggest pan you have. Preferably an old heavy iron pan. Iron pans have two advantages: one, they store the heat way longer than a modern teflon pan, so they’ll still be hot after putting the first couple of ingedrients in. And two, the flavour that you get with an iron pan tastes more roasted, because your food actually burn a little bit on the bottom of the pan. Get the pan up to a medium high temperature and heat up the olive oil.

Add the chicken and cook it for about 2-3 minutes on both sides. Turn the heat down to a medium temperature and cook for another 5-8 minutes. Take the chicken out and chop it into small pieces.

Use the same pan without prior cleaning and start with the onions, since those take the longest to cook. Wait until they’re translucent, then add garlic, chilies, chicken, cumin, oregano, and hot pepper. Easy on the cayenne if this is you first time using it. All this should be done after two minutes and it’s time to add the beans and the chicken broth. The broth will ensure that you have a sauce base for your chili.

Although you’re basically done after bringen the whole thing to a boil, there’s still that secret ingredients to add: time. After boiling, bring it down to a medium/low temperature and simmer for at least 2 hours. If it looks too dry add more broth to the mix.

All the food you eat throughout the day are essentially turned into sugar. That’s really a good thing and nothing to worry about, as long as the amount of food and the amount of sugar that the body can generate from it doesn’t exceed what the body needs in the time that it takes the body to process the food. This is the most important thing to understand!

Digestion

Everything you eat is eventually turned into sugar. If you take more in than you body needs to operate it will store it for better times. That’s when you get bigger. On the other hand, when you eat foods that take longer for the body to process, you can eat more, because it will leave the body before it is processed entirely. When that happens your body will use fat and protein for fuel. And that’s when you loose weight.

The whole point of (s)low carb cooking is to prepare meals from ingredients that will give you enough energy to get through the day, but take long enough to process, that you can eat until you’re full, without putting on weight.

Low Carb Diets

There are a bunch of low carb diets out there, like Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution, The New High Protein Diet, The Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet or if you want to know what the Stars do to their bodies, have a read in The Black Book of Hollywood Diet Secrets. Really effective but extremely hard to follow, since you need a lot of focus is The Ketogenic Diet. All those diets are bad for your body if you do them for too long. Since you cut carbs, vitamins and essentially nutrients from you diet, these diets put a strain on your kidneys.

Slow Carb Diets

The good thing about a Slow Carb Diet is that you still consume foods that take a long time to process in the body, but with much healthier options. On top of that, you get to have one cheat day per week, where you can eat whatever you want, including carbs. Therefore the program suggested by Tim Ferriss is the much healthier option for permanent weight loss.

How to start

So if you decide to tackle your belly and try something new and healthy, there are a couple of things to bear in mind for every meal: avoid white carbohydrates like bread, rice and pasta, eat high protein foods, like eggs, meat and fish.

It makes it a lot easier if you keep your meals simple and eat the same dishes over and over again. Consume only small meals but more frequently:

Breakfast (8am)
Lunch (11am)
2nd Lunch (2pm)
Dinner (5pm)
2nd Dinner (8pm)

Insulin

This leads us to the second most important issue with dieting: Insulin.

Whenever you eat food, your body releases a hormon called insulin. This hormon takes care of storing energy in your cells so that you have it available when you need it. But there are foods that trigger a bigger amount of insulin to be released and there are those, that keep the insulin levels minor. If there’s not a lot of insulin, the amount of food doesn’t matter too much, since only so much energy can be stored. This means, if you eat right, you can eat a lot more than you could otherwise, without getting bigger.

Availability

A big problem is availability – or so it seems. Plan you meals one day ahead and know when slow carb food will not be accessible to you and plan for those occasions by preparing food in advance. Don’t get yourself in a situation, where you’re hungry and don’t know what to eat when, as you’re more likely to make mistakes that way.
Also, since you’re dieting, water and tea are your drinks of choice. If it has to be coffee, use two spoons of cream – no milk and sugar.

Tender pieces of pork, shoulder cut (Boston Butt) or mixed cuts, prepared at low heat for several hours. Sound great?! Good, because just because you’re dieting, doesn’t mean you can’t have any. Here’s a nice way to prepare Pulled Pork the Slow Carb way.

Active Cooking Time: 15 minutes
Total Time : 5 hours
Servings: 6-8

Ingredients:

4 lbs pork shoulder
2 Tbsp salt
½ tsp cumin
2 tsp of black pepper
6 fresh garlic cloves, peeled
1 onion
1 bay leaf
Juice of one lime

The basic seasoning will consist of salt, pepper, cumin. Mix all these together and rub the meat with it. Don’t be too easy with the spices – this i a big chunk of meat and right now it doesn’t taste like much. Use a knife to make some deep but narrow cuts and stick the garlic cloves into the meat. Try to distribute them evenly, so every part of the meat get a bit of the flavour. Leave it like this in the fridge for at least an hour, but better over night.

When you take it out place on a roasting tray. Chopp the bayleaf and the onion up into big chunks and place them around the meat.

Cooking the meat is a very religous matter. Every BBQ champ will tell you the only way to cook Pulled Pork is with a smoker. If you have one available – use it. 4-6 hours of low temperature smoking should yield the perfect result.

For everybody else a combination of tin foil, heat and time will do the job. Preheat the oven at 120°C (250°F) and cook it for about half an hour. Don’t open the oven. Take the temperature down to about 90°C (190°F) and leave it in for another 3-4 hours.

After cooking take it out and let it sit for at least 30 minutes. That way you preserve a lot of the meat juices inside. The rest of the juice is in the pan. If you want a proper sauce to go with your Pulled Pork, cook the juice with a little butter, flower and a litle cream.

Use a fork to pull the meat into little shred, hence the name. Although this is typically served in a bun – don’t

Even if you are not really in experimenting with your body, the book will probably be an interesting read, since Tim has this habbit of approaching topics just a little differently, in a very amusing fashion.

If you are at all interested about the human body, this book is for you.

What Does It Look Like?

You shall never judge a book by it’s cover and while the two main colors, a fully saturated purple and orange, would not have been everybody’s first choice, the design is flawless: clear, professional and to the point!

The front cover has been revealed on Tim’s blog and on Amazon some time ago, while the back cover, as we now know, was the product description on the Amazon page. Front and Back covers can now be found as high resolution images over on the official website.
The text on the back sounds much like a TV commercial and describes how Tim came to write the book and what approach he took. He basically challenged everything that is meant to be common knowledge and starts testing for better solution using himself as a guinea pig.

What In The Four Hour Body?!

Pretty much everybody interested in Tim Ferriss or The 4-Hour Work Week knew that the The 4 Hour Body was coming and probably most of those people had a rough idea of what the book would be about. But it wasn’t until only a few days ago, that we finally got our hands on the table of contents. It was published with the launch of the official website for The 4-Hour Body. It’s quite a read and judging by the length of the table of contents by itself, we have a lot to expect from the book.

As Tim explains in the Sample Chapter, every part is sort of a building block for your personal body engineering strategy. So by choosing what guidelines you want to incorporate into your daily routine, you choose the goals you want to achieve by reading the The 4-Hour Body.

Here are the chapters/disciplines:

How to Use This Book

How to Use This Book

The introductory part of The 4-Hour Body, “How to Use This Book “, starts at Nine Inch Nails concert. Timothy Ferriss is in the men’s room, doing 40 Air Squats and then eating his fourth meal of the day at a full 4.400 calories. 72 hours later he measures his bodyfat – it has dropped from 11.9% to 10,2% in 14 days. Pretty impressive given the amount of food consumed.

The first part of the introduction then goes on to giving a few statements of how to trick your body into a specific reaction without giving any further explanation. Its a teaser to the topics ahead, with the main statement being: Changing your body is easy and requires little effort, if you do the right things.

Diary of a Madman

The next couple of paragraphs “Diary of a Madman“ talk about how Tim came to write the book, identifying the greatest fear of modern man as “too much e-mail and getting fat”. He had been obsessed about sports from the age of 18 and had recorded every exercise he had done since then, tracking weight, bodyfat and including continuous blood tests. Further tests, tracking and medical exams have totaled to more than $250.000 and a database that can serve as a basis for a book, with a new approach to body engineering. Tim states very clearly that the common knowledge dietary principles,

Eat more greens.

Eat less saturated fat.

Exercise more and burn more calories.

Eat more omega-3 fatty acids.

will not be covered in his new book. Instead all common knowledge will be challenged and new methods will be presented.

The Unintentional Dark Horse

The next part “The Unintentional Dark Horse“ clearly labels the book not to be a medical manual, but rather a repository of hypothesis and data, that lead to certain, tested assumptions about how the human body reacts to certain treatment of substances.

All the test in this book have been supervised by “more than 100 PhDs, NASA scientists, medical doctors, Olympic athletes, professional sports trainers (from the NFL to MLB), world-record holders, Super Bowl rehabilitation specialists, and even former Eastern Bloc coaches“.

Having a background in running a sports nutrition company, Tim claims one the biggest advantages he has over a regular scientific approach is, that he has no scientific career to protect. He can therefore do outrageous experiments without having to fear peer pressure or failure and in doing so, have more success outside the system.

A Laboratory of One

The sections “A Laboratory of One” and “The Future’s Already Here“ describe the general workings of the health and beauty industry. With tomorrows technology already being available today, most of that knowledge is only accessible to pro athletes and rich individuals. The time it takes for a new product or method to become known to the public takes usually 10-20 years and often fails to do even that.

Another reason why proven methods never make their way on to the market is, that more often than not, those proceedings aren’t developed by trial and error among a group of peers and athletes, but in lab conditions with people that have little or no knowledge in the given field. Tim states that “for uncommon solutions, you have to look in uncommon places”.

For everybody who has read The 4-Hour Workweek, Expanded and Updated, the 80/20 principle is nothing new when it comes to Timothy Ferriss. Of course Pareto’s Law will also be applied in this book “The 80/20 Principle: From Wall Street to the Human Machine”. This basically means, Tim will look at what 20% of the effort produce 80% of the result, focus on this portion and drop the rest. With the new book, he takes that rule even further claiming to have found the “2.5% that deliver 95% of the results in rapid body redesign and performance enhancement”.

How to Use This Book—Five Rules

The next part “How to Use This Book—Five Rules” is the actual manual for the use of this book:

This of this book as a buffet

Skip the science if it’s too dense

Please be sceptical

Don’t use scepticism as an excuse for inaction

Enjoy it

This basically means, you’re not supposed to read it back to back, but to choose your goals and read the parts applicable. That means, if your goal is rapid fat-loss, The chapters you’re supposed to read are all chapters in “Fundamentals”, all chapters in “Ground Zero”, “The Slow-Carb Diet I and II” and “Building the Perfect Posterior”.

Fundamentals

If you are, on the other hand after rapid strength gain, you should read all chapters in “Fundamentals”, all chapters in “Ground Zero”, “From Geek to Freak” and “Occam’s Protocol I and II” and incorporate those tips and tricks into your daily routine. There’s no need to read up on the underlying science for those who don’t like to and Tim even admits that, while the mechanics in his book work, he might have gotten the science wrong. He encourages the reader to be skeptical about every part of the book but not use it as an excuse for inactivity. The reader is supposed to read and digest the contents at their own pace and enjoy reading it.

The Billionaire Productivity Secret and the Experimental Lifestyle

The last part of the first chapter “The Billionaire Productivity Secret and the Experimental Lifestyle” answers a question Sir Richard Branson was once asked: “How do you become more productive?”. The answer is quite simple and short “work out”. The increased fitness will lead to more energy, that can then be turned into more productivity.

The 4-Hour Body tries to be a manifesto of an experimental lifestyle, ignoring common rules and just paying attention to cause and effect, to change everything you are dissatisfied about with your body.

Alles mit Maß und Ziel

The first chapter closes with a German quote “Alles mit Maß und Ziel”, which roughly translates to “have a goal, but don’t overdo it”.
