Today is flag day in Canada, as it was on this day back in 1965 that the Red Maple Leaf was first raised on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, to officially designate this as our official Canadian flag. Not without its controversy, but after 46 years, The Red Maple Leaf is truly our nation identity andfilled with pride.

The Quebec Winter Carnival - January 28 2011 - February 13 2011

The Bonhomme welcomes visitors to the Carnival from the
Ice Palace.

The annual Quebec Winter Carnival is well underway, starting last Friday. The Carival has been going on for over 50 years and is the biggest Winter festival in the world. The Bonhomme, is the official mascot of the carnival and is the symbol of not only the carnival, but of the province of Quebec, and Canada too.

The Quebec Winter Carnival has been known as the Mardi Gras of the north, but with the exception, that this is geared for people of all ages with games and events for families, children, and people of all ages.

Events such as a grand opening ceremony, parades every night, snow and ice sculptures, dog sled, ice canoe races, parties, and air raft rides. Most of all it is fun for the entire family.

We Canadians love to talk about our weather, however over the years we have been able to over come the hardship and learned to enjoy winter with all that is there to offer. One of the many activities that we Canadians enjoys is sports. Not just hockey, although hockey is our pride and joy, there are several other sports that we Canadians enjoy playing, curling obviously comes to mind. Skiing, either downhill, slalom, or cross-country, plus we can't forget the snowboarders too. What about skating at your local rink or take a trip to Ottawa and skate on the Rideau Canal.

I recently read a book titled, "Defiant Spirits", which I purchased from the gift shop at the Mc Michael Canadian Art Gallery. The art Gallery itself is tremendous and a must for anyone who loves art and especially if they enjoy the works from the Group of 7 and Tom Thomson.

"Defiant Spirits", by Ross King, is a terrific book for anyone who is interested in the Group of 7 and Tom Thomson. Ross King describes the artists in great deal, including the struggles to be accepted by a sceptical public, media, and politicians. There is great insight into the life of all the artists, including Tom Thomson, which includes the untimely and mysterious death of Thomson back in 1917. This is highly recommended and great for students who may be studying The Group of 7.
