On March 22–23, 2026, Italian voters rejected a constitutional referendum on judicial reforms proposed by Giorgia Meloni’s (Italy’s current Prime Minister). The “No” camp won with approximately 54% of the vote, while the government-backed “Yes” received about 46–47%. Turnout was higher than expected, at around 59% (roughly 28.6 million total votes cast).

Key Elements of the Proposed Reform

The reform aimed to overhaul aspects of Italy’s judiciary, which has long been criticized for being slow and inefficient. Main proposals included:

Separating the careers of judges and public prosecutors (currently, they share a unified path and training).

Creating distinct governing bodies (splitting the single CSM — Consiglio Superiore della Magistratura) for judges and prosecutors.

Establishing a new, independent disciplinary court (Alta Corte Disciplinare) for handling misconduct cases.

The government argued these changes would enhance judicial independence, reduce alleged political influence (particularly from left-leaning “red judges”), and improve efficiency. Opponents viewed the reforms as an attempt to weaken the judiciary’s autonomy and exert greater political control.

Political Context and Outcome

The referendum became a de facto vote of confidence in Meloni’s government, one year before the next general election. Meloni conceded defeat pretty well, stating that Italians had decided and her government would “respect” the result while continuing to govern “with responsibility.” She described it as a “lost chance to modernise Italy.”

The opposition celebrated the result as a defence of judicial independence and the Constitution. The “No” vote was stronger in major cities (e.g., Naples ~71%, Rome ~57%) and certain regions.

Possible Implications

The constitutional changes will not take effect; the existing judicial structure remains unchanged.

It represents the first major domestic setback for Meloni since she took office in 2022.

Analysts see it as energizing the opposition ahead of future elections, though Meloni’s coalition retains a parliamentary majority for now.

In short, Italian voters rejected the government’s flagship justice reform in a high-turnout constitutional referendum, delivering a clear but not overwhelming political blow to Prime Minister Meloni.

The hermitage of Santa Caterina located located in the municipality of Leggiuno, in the Province of Varese in northern Italy, offering an ancient charm in the most beautiful guardian of Lake Maggiore, steeped in history, legends, and miracles. It’s called the hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso, and its location is spectacular: it clings to the rock of Sasso Ballaro, overlooking the lake, almost as if defying time and the laws of nature, suspended between sky and water in a fragile yet captivating balance.

This gem is located in Leggiuno, in the province of Varese, and can be reached via a scenic staircase or by boat. But beyond its undeniable architectural beauty, it also has an interesting story to tell. Here, in particular, a miracle is said to have occurred, linked to the very rock face into which it is nestled.

The hermitage’s history began with a tragedy: the greedy merchant Alberto Besozzi, supposedly saved from shipwreck while crossing the lake thanks to his prayers to Saint Catherine of Alexandria. He decided to make a vow, retreating as a hermit to that stretch of coast, in a cave, for the rest of his life. There he built a chapel dedicated to the Saint in 1170, which is still preserved inside the church today.

It was soon joined by two other churches, Santa Maria Nova and San Nicola or Nicolao, patron saint of sailors, and seven years later the third church, dedicated to Saint Catherine, was built. The complex was initially governed by the Dominicans, between 1314 and 1645, later replaced by the Carmelites of Mantua until 1770.

In 1914, the complex was declared a national monument, while in 1970 ownership was transferred to the Province of Varese, which began major restoration and consolidation works, reopening it to the public in 1986. The hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso Ballaro presents itself as a complex set of buildings: the southern convent, the “conventino” and the courtyard of the press, that tell the story of centuries of architectural stratifications of this place.

<img decoding="async" width="735" height="514" src="https://4theloveofitaly.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Santa-Caterina-Sasso-located-shores-Lake-Maggiore-Italy.jpg" alt="Side view of Santa Caterina del Sasso located on the shores of Lake Maggiore in Italy.
How to get there

There are several options to reach it. On foot, the most scenic access is via a long, panoramic staircase of over 250 steps, surrounded by greenery. Alternatively, a convenient modern elevator carved into the rock is available.

Those wanting to visit by car can park nearby and continue on foot, while during the busiest months it is also possible to reach the hermitage by lake, with boats and vessels that dock directly at the small pier at the bottom.

Naples in southern Italy is a real treat for the eyes and the heart, as it holds a lot of beautiful sites to visit. In the city, there’s so much to see, and picking where to go isn’t that easy. You could just wander around to admire the beauty of Naples, but there are many points of interest in the city. So if you want to plan a targeted tour, here are some spots you definitely can’t miss.

Piazza del Plebiscito and Palazzo reale di Napoli
A symbol of Naples par excellence, it will open your eyes like a splendid theatre that houses the famous Royal Palace, richly decorated and perfectly preserved.

Spaccanapoli

This is the lower decumanus that runs from Via Benedetto Croce to Via Forcella and from above it seems to split the city in two parts. A characteristic neighbourhood, it is worth visiting every corner and alleyway.

Cristo Velato Napoli e Cappella di Sansevero

The Veiled Christ is a stunning statue located inside the Sansevero Chapel, one of the most remarkable religious works you can see in the whole world. Built in 1753, you can get up close and admire its perfect condition.

Duomo di Napoli e tesoro di San Gennaro

Right in the historic centre of the city stands a cathedral with a neo-Gothic facade, which has been restored a few times over the years and is quite striking architecturally. Inside, you’ll find the famous treasure of San Gennaro, the city’s patron saint, who you’ll hear people calling upon during your visit. The treasures includes relics, silverware, and various precious items.

Metro dell’arte

You don’t have to visit this museum to soak in the artistic vibe in Naples (though I would still recommend a visit if you have time). Just go down to the metro and check out the paintings and frescos that decorate the walls, which are different for each stop.

Museo di Capodimonte

It’s one of the most famous cultural hubs in the world, featuring both historical and beautiful paintings and sculptures. We’re talking about a stunning complex, even from the outside, surrounded by an amazing garden that’s just begs to be admired.

Galleria Borbonica Napoli

During the visit to the underground Naples, you’ll be able to check out the Bourbon Gallery, which is located under the Pizzofalcone hill near the Royal Palace. Built in 1853, it served as an escape route for the royals in case of imminent danger, and you can still walk through it today to feel the vibes of that era.

Napoli sotterranea

Not just on the surface, Naples is amazing to visit underground too, with organized tours that take you through the historic tunnels and let you admire the remains from various eras. Through out history, the underground city has been used by Neapolitans in various ways, from a water source to a dump, and even as a shelter during bombings.

Looking to visit the seaside town of Rimini on the Adriatic coast in Italy? Then why not consider this perfect gift of a Monopoly board dedicated to the town of Rimini.

For 20 years, Winning Moves, a company that has the international rights for special editions of the board game, explains the Italian manager of the company Fausto Cerutti, has been making versions for various Italian cities; the first was Naples and, later, Rome, Verona, Reggio Emilia, Bergamo and Palermo. But for the “first summer version“, he continues, the choice could have to be Rimini, “a model of tourism, a city that is a tourist, cultural and sporting centre”. So, for “the most played game in the world”, tested at least once by a billion people across the world and which the number of banknotes printed is higher than that of real money, the real estate bargaining of the red houses and green hotels have local names like Corso d ‘ Augusto and the Fellini Museum, the Galli theatre and piazzale Kennedy, piazza Tre Martiri and via Ca ‘Bacchino.

Many local partners are present on the Monopoly board, from Aquafan to Amarcord beer, Tamburini jewellery, including sports, entertainment venues and even a local real estate agency. In short, the perfect game for the Rimini people as well as the ideal gadget to remember an unforgettable holiday to Italy.

The game will be on sale at a local store called Spazio Conad and other stores and costs 30 euros (about £26 at the current exchange rate). This really is an excellent opportunity to promote the city in an original way and perhaps to play the game of being on holiday in Rimini even when you have returned home.

In my book, volcanos are Mother Nature’s most awe-inspiring and deadly spectacle, when a rupture in the earth’s crust allows molten magma, gases and ash to blast out into the atmosphere, often several miles high before cascading to ground, causing untold devastation.

Now clearly I wouldn’t recommend going anywhere near one of the things if there was even the slightest chance of an eruption, but there are many dormant or only mildly active volcanos around which are easily accessed. Climbing to the summit and peering into the crater is an incredible experience, as though you’re looking into the earth’s core.

And it’s not just for the thrills either. Holidaying among volcanos offers other benefits, for example to your health. It’s often said that the mud around the Volcano Solfatara in Pozzuoli, Italy, contains minerals and salts that can help with all kinds of skin and breathing conditions. It stinks around there, true, because of all the sulphur, but a lot of people visit anyway every year, holding their noses as they bathe in warm natural mud baths.

History-buffs also can get a lot out of it. No visit to the devastated town of Pompeii is complete without a walk up the side of Vesuvius, the volcano that destroyed it in 79AD, to understand the fear and confusion it must have caused the poor local people.

If you like the sound of getting close to a volcano on your holidays, here are some suggestions for where you’ll find the most interesting ones.

Vesuvius, Italy – The eruption that wiped out the towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum was one of the most immense and destructive of all time. Vesuvius is still active, although not doing too much recently. You can easily climb to the summit within a few hours, using the Bay of Naples as your base. Once you’re down, visit Pompeii to get a clear understanding of the devastation and panic the volcano wrought, and also unique insights into ancient Roman life.

Krakatoa, Indonesia – When Krakatoa erupted in 1883, wiping out over 30,000 people and causing gigantic tsunamis, it is also thought to have produced the loudest sound ever hear, audible over 3000 miles away! Scientists reckon it could blow again soon, so for now you can only visit by boat, keeping a distance of at least three miles. It’s between Java and Sumatra islands though, so easily reached.

Mt Etna, Italy – Despite being one of Europe’s most active volcanos, as well as one of the largest, tourists can still climb to the crater for a look around. It has erupted many times over the last century, never having caused any major damage apart from destroying one small village (with plenty of warning).

Mt St Helens, USA – Just south of Seattle in Washington State, Mount St Helens’ last major eruption was in 1980. Since then the mountain has frequently been closed off to visitors for fear of volcanic activity, but currently it is possible to climb marked trails.

Eyjafjallajökull, Iceland – My belief is the name derives from the sound you would make were the ground to start shaking while you were right at the summit. This is the volcano which erupted in 2010, sending a huge ash cloud up into the air, which disrupted flight activity for weeks afterwards as airlines were forced to ground planes.

Many companies now organise adventure holidays for singles and groups wanting to visit volcanos around the world. I highly recommend it for a fascinating look at nature in action. Remember to wear running shoes though!

Biog: Rob is a big lover of the volcanoes of Italy and can’t wait for his next trip to Mount Etna on the island of Sicily.

Introduction

The island of Sicily is a well known and beautiful destination off the Southern coast of Italy’s mainland. The residents are intensely proud of their heritage and culture. The island has been ruled by many different nations and empires over time and as a result, the culture, language and cuisine is diverse and fascinating. It boasts dozens of unique cities, each offering something special and different to travellers. The island is home to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, amazing architecture, incredible ruins, breathtaking scenery and magnificent cuisine. While there are plenty of different accommodation options offered in Sicily, the best way to stay on the island is certainly to rent one of the beautiful Italian villas. Many people assume that they will be unnecessary or too expensive, but that is not always the case. Read on to learn a little more about the benefits of a villa, how to compare a hotel room to a private villa and expected costs.

Villas vs. Hotels

Perhaps the biggest difference between a hotel and a villa in Sicily is the space you will have for your family. A hotel room can be idea for visitors not needing really big rooms, especially for larger groups, families or those travelling with small children. A villa, on the other hand, is typically very spacious and will include several rooms as well as an outdoor living area. Another big advantage of choosing a villa over a hotel is that a villa in Sicily will give you far more privacy. Rather than having other hotel guests above, below and on either side of your accommodation, a villa will have far more privacy and be much quieter. If the weather is bad one day in a hotel, you might feel cramped and forced to stay in a small space. In a villa you will have plenty of room to relax, play games or even cook in the kitchen.

Amenities of a Villa

Many Sicilian villas boast an outdoor swimming pool specifically for guests. This is one of the top amenities that makes a holiday accommodation truly spectacular. Rather than sharing a pool with hundreds of other guests you can enjoy having an exclusive swimming spot all to yourself. Many villas also have amenities like en suite bathrooms, entertainment centres complete a television, a gaming console and movies and even a fully equipped kitchen. At the more exclusive end there are even villas that come with household staff. Drivers, gardeners, housekeepers and chefs are not uncommon additions in a lavish Sicilian villa rental.

Expected Costs and Savings in a Villa

The costs of a villa in Sicily varies greatly depending on a number of factors. If you want a large villa for ten people or more with beach access, staff and a pool you can expect to pay upwards of three thousand Euros per week. Smaller villas in less ideal locations or without a pool can be booked for as little as six hundred Euros a week, which is cheaper than many hotels. If you are travelling in a large group that will require more than one hotel room for the duration of the vacation in Sicily, a villa may actually be the more affordable option overall. Keep in mind that a fully equipped kitchen means you can prepare and cook food in the villa rather than eating out in expensive hotel restaurants three times a day.

Visiting Sicily is a wonderful chance to explore a unique side of Italian culture, dine on incredible cuisine, and explore the cities and the ancient ruins.

If you feel a villa is not for you, we highly recommend the hotel below:

The ancient stones, the silence of the countryside, the flavors of the garden and the terraces with olive or vineyards: a winning mix that has made Puglia the destination at the top of the charts of favorite places to visit in Italy. In the lands of Primitivo and Negroamaro – according to the American magazine Wine Enthusiast, Puglia is in the top ten of the 2013 wine destinations – there are many masseries to offer excellent hospitality between Brindisi and Lecce.

Often just a stone’s throw from the cellars to visit that have made this possible with quality wines, secular traditions and cutting-edge innovations such as the Tenuta Eméra, in Marina di Pulsano. It is a story of wine and passion that of Claudio Quarta, the first scientist-entrepreneur in today’s vineyard biotechnology that in Puglia has found the ideal territory for the cultivation of the Primitivo, whose grapes mature at the end of August. The result is an intensely scented, full bodied and pleasing red wine. Not far away, the Masseria Bagnara Resort & Spa (Lizzano (Ta) Prices: double b & b from 150 pounds) is an ancient farmhouse with white walls and arches made of local tuff, transformed into a residence with fifteen rooms, a 360 degree view over vineyards, olive groves, Mediterranean scrub and sea.

A walk through the streets on the island of Ponza’s, a spot of shopping and a fish-based dinner and White wine. Everything they were doing all under the watchful of the curious people. Tiffany Trump, taking an holiday with her mother Marla Maples, made a short visit to the beautiful island of Ponza, part of the province of Latina in the Lazio region in southern Italy. After being in Capri, the 23-year-old daughter of US President Donald Trump and Maples, his second wife, returned to the Pontina Island, where the Trump family, before the presidential elections, was home. In recent years, to have a holiday there was Ivanka. She had been here ten years ago with the property Tycoon. The other day Tiffany was very much enjoying here star status with massive security measures in place.
