Put them on for Christmas!

When we checked out Narva’s new Ultima 225 Combo kits recently, and read about how well they performed in 4WD magazine tests, we knew they were exactly what we needed to stock. Especially, when the kits come with a complete ‘Plug and Play’ wiring loom that includes a mouse switch, fuse and fuse holder, relay and relay block, and cables insulated with corrugated tubing. There’s even a patented switching box that allows the loom to work on positive or negative wiring.

Each kit contains a pair of Swedish designed Narva Ultima 225 (8.85”) lamps (1 x broad beam, and 1 x pencil beam) featuring aluminium ‘free-form’ technology reflectors, virtually unbreakable polycarbonate lenses, polycarbonate ‘see-though’ lens protectors, rotary cup mounting system, and a glare shield at the top of the lamp to screen stray light.

There are three kits:

225-71700 has 100W globes and clear lenses.

225-71700BE sports 100W globes and blue lenses, which are claimed to provide a whiter, crisper light. For a limited time, we have either kit available for just $330 (Normally around $440).

The mother-of-all-lights version is the 225-71700HID with 35W globes that produce thee times more light, and provide five times the life expectancy of a standard halogen globe. The 35W globe reduces power Consumption and as the increased colour temperature (4150degreeK) is closer to daylight, it helps reduce eye fatigue that can occur on long journeys. When compared to other HID kits on the market, our price of $899 is fantastic value for such a high-spec product.

We offer free delivery, by insured post, to anywhere in Australia. http://www.4wd1.com/

Subscribe to 4WD1 posts by Email
Mind boggling 'RipSaw' off-road vehicle cuts through any terrain

The video says it all. Can you imagine five big and burly Queensland cops squeezed into the cabin of a Hummer H3?

Then there’s the black H3 that Queensland Police is using in its ‘undercover operations’ fleet. It’s hard to believe. If a black, unmarked, Hummer tried to pull you over, would you think it was the police? Would you stop? We wouldn’t. We’d floor the pedal of the Jeep and head for the closest narrow-gutted street, or any other place that didn’t allow super-wide vehicles.

Subscribe to 4WD1 posts by Email

Video of the month - 4WD1.com

This proud Nissan GU Patrol owner seems to prefer two wheels instead of four!

If you have a video you want to share, why not email us.

Subscribe to 4WD1 posts by Email
EXTENSIVE WINCH COMPARISON SHOWS IRONMAN ONE OF THE BEST

The current issue of Australian 4WD Action magazine (issue 126) features a mega winch comparo.

11 pages are dedicated to the cause, covering amp draw, winch stall testing, cable and hook destruction testing, submersion testing, and of course real-life abuse on the trail.

Out of the top 10 winches extensively tested, 4WD Action magazine rated overall the Ironman 9500lb as fourth best, ahead of the Warn Magnum, Warn 12000, Mile Marker 9000lb, T-max 9000/10000 and Opposite Lock 95000lb.

While the Ironman 95000lb winch was not the ultimate performer among the group, it proved a solid workhorse and well ahead of some the better known brands.

At 4WD1's price of just $799, there's no real reason for not having the extra saftey and security that comes with having your own electric self-recovery machine on-board. I try to imagine what it would have been like....to travel through a country unspoiled by buildings, roads, traffic, hordes of people and pollution in its many forms.

The marks left by the indigenous tribes over countless generations were microscopic compared to the landscape modifications that have been made more recently - and, usually, in the name of progress. My mind tries to envisage how everything looked more than two centuries ago: the crystal clear air and the natural environment with its abundance of flora and fauna.

Then, quite quickly, I jolt back to reality. What would I have done if I had had an accident or become seriously ill? A broken bone, a spinal injury or even a bad toothache would have turned paradise into pure hell. There would be no way of letting others know you need help, no rescue service or ambulance to whisk you off to the gentle care of a modern hospital, no injections to wipe out intense pain, and no air conditioned room in which to recuperate.

Come to think of it; the 21st century is really where I belong!
Subscribe to 4WD1 posts by Email
Jeep Parts clearance sale XJ ZG ZJ Cherokee Grand WG WJ TJ YJ Wrangler

Here is a unique opportunity for Jeep owners to SAVE HEAPS on Jeep parts.

The parts listed are new (unless otherwise indicated) and most were manufactured by the companies that supplied the Jeep factory in the USA.

These EXTRA-LOW prices are only available while current stocks last. Does the President of the USA really have to travel half-way around the world (with a full entourage of assistants, reporters, security people and armored vehicles) just to have a few hours of talks with the Australian prime minister? Do business people really need to have face-to-face discussions with their clients, customers or suppliers? Haven’t any of these people heard of video-conferencing? In many cases, this type of international travel is simply a tax-deductible perk and/or a reward for ‘achievement’ in business.

WHEN the sale of ‘mega-yachts’ is banned. If my 4WD is considered (by some uninformed souls) to be ‘anti-social’, what could be said about the thriving, but little publicized, world of mega-yachts - and I don’t mean yachts with sails! Consider this: the world’s largest mega-yacht is ‘Rising Sun’, a gargantuan owned by Larry Ellison of Oracle. This monster is 452’ long and is powered by four 20-cylinder, 12,000hp engines. Not far behind is the 414’ ‘Octopus’ belonging to Microsoft’s Paul Allen. Either of these ‘boats’ would cost millions a year to operate and use tens of thousands of gallons of fuel in the process. And, like most of these sea-going palaces, their main purpose in life seems to be socializing in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. Even the 100th largest mega-yacht is not exactly tiny. This craft is reported to be Gary Comer’s 151’ ‘Turmoil’, which is pushed along by just a pair of 820hp Caterpillar engines. By the way, the social standing of the mega-yachts mentioned above will only be temporary. I read lately that even larger ones are under construction; and there is a long waiting list of orders.

WHEN millions of people around the world stop watching the F1 motor racing circus. Or, as it is known in some circles: ‘slot cars for big boys’. Why are SUV-owners subjected to constant “gas-guzzler” remarks from green groups and the press, when top-level motor racing is one of the most-manic users of fossil fuels? Could it be that anything to do with F1 makes great news and, therefore, attracts plenty of advertisers? There seem to be plenty of motoring writers prepared to ridicule people who drive 4WD vehicles, yet those same writers often to go into spasms of excitement when reporting that a Ferrari beat a Williams by 1.2 seconds. According to official F1 sources, each of the eight official teams travels 160,000kms (100,000miles) during each season. They use dozens of articulated trucks and support vehicles, and regularly fly everything by cargo plane when races are held outside of Europe. It is reported that (on average) each F1 team burns up, during testing and racing, over 53,000 gallons of fuel per season. That’s enough to keep me and my 4WD happy for the next fifty years!

WHEN the construction of huge mansions is banned. The amount of energy consumed in building a palatial house is enormous. And it is not unusual for a home of this type to be occupied by just two people. In the city where I live, a multi-storey waterfront mansion is being built for, reportedly, a cost of $30 million. To this astonishing figure you need to add the on-going operational costs of air-conditioning, heating, cleaning and maintenance; plus the running of obligatory trinkets like the motor cruiser, yacht and speedboat waiting at the jetty out the front, the exotic motor vehicles in the garage, and the private jet at a nearby airport. In this particular case, the owner (a divorced male) claims he will be the only permanent resident. Naturally, the print journos and the on-air commentators love talking about this extravagant type of lifestyle. But, you are not likely to hear them mention the associated energy consumption. No, that sort of criticism is reserved for the family heading off on holidays in their SUV.

WHEN people stop traveling to sporting events, concerts, theaters and art galleries etc. Even if they travel by public transport (collectively) a great amount of energy is consumed. The narks of the anti-SUV groups are quick to be critical of 4WD owners using their vehicles for recreational purposes, yet it is apparently quite Ok for hundreds of thousands of people to burn up some of the world’s oil reserves – just to see a bunch of athletes kick a bag of air around a grass field!

WHEN the governments of every country come to their senses and order their defense forces to lay down their arms. Consider this: (a) When the US Army deploys, 70% of its total tonnage is fuel. (b) The US Department of Defense (DOD) consumes more oil than any other government body in the world. 144 million barrels a year, or 395,000 barrels a day! (c) Between August 10, 1990 and May 31, 1991 Central Command’s Desert Shield and Desert Storm operations consumed 1.8 billion gallons of fuel. (d) In Iraq, the US Army burns up around 1,900,000 gallons of gasoline a day (and there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight). (e) The Office of the Under Secretary of Defense said “Because DOD’s consumption of oil represents the highest priority of all uses, there will be no fundamental limits to DOD’s fuel supply for many, many decades.”

THE CONCLUSION.

The chance that any of the above will happen is zero. Living in today’s world requires the consumption of some type of energy. Even a gentle activity, like visiting an art exhibition, or going to the theater, (usually) requires the burning of fossil fuels. And, despite the protests of the anti-whatever groups, we cannot live in a modern society without consuming large amounts of energy. Retreating to a back-country block - to grow your own vegetables and run some chickens and a cow - does little to save the planet. No matter how hard you try, at some stage you will still need the services that can only be provided by an energy-consuming community.

A few years ago, I read an interesting editorial. It suggested that there were no true environmentalists; just pretenders. Because a true environmentalist would have dressed in bio-degradable clothes, walked to an area where carnivorous animals live, and slashed his/her wrists with a sharp stick.

Happy trails.

Subscribe to 4WD1 posts by Email
BEIJING - BEFORE AND AFTER THE OLYMPICS

BEIJING THEN

Way back in the 1980s, American Motors Corporation had a vision. Their recently-released Jeep Cherokee XJ wagon, which had become a roaring success in the USA (and went on to find three million buyers between 1983 and 2001) could be the perfect vehicle to meet the demands of the rapidly expanding automotive market in China.

Eventually, with the approval of the Chinese government, AMC set up a joint venture, known as Beijing Jeep, to build the XJ Cherokee. If successful, there were plans to export a high-spec RHD version to Australia and more basic 4-cylinder models to developing countries around the world.

However, the marriage of the Chinese and American companies was not always a happy one. Where possible, the factory was using local materials; but these were often low-grade and the build-quality of the Jeeps left much to be desired. One AMC executive couldn't believe his eyes when he noticed that the window glass of new Cherokees was full of air bubbles!

AMC's world-wide finances were in a diabolical state, so the future of the Beijing alliance was always in doubt. Chrylser's purchase of AMC in 1987 saved the relationship, and while no Chinese-built XJ's were ever exported to Australia, there were enough buyers (from the 1 billion+ population) to keep the assembly line operational. Today, the company is known as BBDC (Beijing Benz Daimler Chrysler)and it builds the 2.4 litre Qishe, a stylish vehicle that Jeep fans would instantly recognize as an XJ.

BEIJING NOW

Believe it, or not. If you intend to own a motor vehicle ten years from now, there is a good chance you will be driving one that was made in China. And you will, most likely, be very proud of the fact.

When Japanese cars entered the Aussie market in the 1960s, a lot of people referred to them as 'Jap crap'. Many car dealers boasted that they 'wouldn't touch one with a barge pole'. And we know of one dealer who had a major finance application rejected, because the bank manager was sure that the proposed Japanese franchise was a reckless venture.

The more-recent introduction of cars from Korea was often treated with similar, though more subdued, disdain. And, once again, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. The authoritive J D Powers research business in the USA reports that Hyundai vehicles are now near the top of the list, for reliability and customer satisfaction.

Now it's China's turn. And while the photos of many current models seem to indicate quirky design, it shouldn't take the world's most-populated country very long to catch up. Quality will quickly reach Japanese and Korean standards. After all, when were you last really disappointed by your Chinese-built computer, wide-screen television, mobile phone, GPS, airconditioner or running shoes?

Ateco Automotive, the Australian distributor of USA-made Warn products, plus Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Citroen, Maserati and Ferrari, is about to release a dual-cab utility made by Great Wall Motors in China. According to reports, this attractive truck will hit the market with a sub-$20k price, and you can bet it will make its presence known in the Australian market. A favourable reception here could also inspire a 4WD version.

BEIJING TOMORROW

If you like Jeeps or Land Rovers, BBDC - the descendant of the old AMC partnership - could have a 4WD model to satisfy both camps. In fact, the new B40 looks like the result of a night of passion between a JK Wrangler and a Range Rover Sport.

Introduced at the Beijing Motor Show, the B40 stunned visitors with its tough, yet modern, appearance. Some claimed that the design looks better than a current-model Wrangler. Though there were no similar comparisons to the Range Rover.

While no details regarding engines and transmissions, or even a release date, are available at the moment, the B40 does prove that the Chinese auto manufacturers are well aware of what the world wants (and demands) in tyling. If we were Ateco, or any other motor vehicle importer, we would be booking a flight to Beijing right now. Hundreds of obstacles in the ‘river’ meant their small boat and outboard motor had to regularly rowed, pushed, shoved, dragged and carried; while dealing constantly with bush flies, ants, spiders and the presence of venomous snakes.

Even by the standards of the early 60s, the film was amateurish. However, this was part of the appeal. Here were young guys, with very limited resources, taking on a challenge that had never been attempted. The popularity of the film took everyone by surprise (particularly, TCN9) and led to the Leyland brothers becoming professional outdoor documentary makers. In later years, their weekly 'Ask the Leyland Brothers' program was attracting a national audience of 2.5 million!

The Leyland's 1966 production, ‘Wheels Across the Wilderness’, lured enough sponsors to cover the expenses of a 111 day, 6797 km (4248m) Land Rover trip across the middle of the Australian continent. To achieve this, by traveling in the most direct course, they had to cross the inhospitable Simpson Desert. And the words "no motorised vehicle will ever penetrate this desert" written by explorer, Cecil Madigan, would have been an irrresistable challenge.

According to the publicity of the day - and the inferences in their documentary - the Leylands were the first to cross the Simpson using motor vehicles. It made a great story, and film of them tackling the dunes and making desperate repairs to their their Land Rovers (five broken differentials!) gave television audiences a real appreciation of Australia's harsh desert country.

However, the Leylands were not the first to drive a motor vehicle across the Simpson. In fact, three years before they arrived, Compagnie Generale Geophysique (CGG) had already carved a road right through the desert for the oil exploration company, French Petroleum. In 1962, the founder of Geosurveys Australia, Reg Sprigg, had driven across, using a different route.

If the Leylands had not been aware of the 'French Line' (as the road is now known) when they began their journey, they would certainly have found out about it when they reached the Simpson. There would have been too many indicators of 'activity' for them to remain ignorant of the easy way through the desert. And there are reports of the Leylands speaking to a driver who had been contracted by CGG.

The fact that they made their crossing well away from the most direct route indicates that they certainly knew of the new road's existence. Perhaps it was more important to film a dramatic (and entertaining) challenge than be too concerned about minor facts. Whatever the truth, 'Wheels Across the Simpson' was a commercial success for the Leylands - and their sponors.

Custom 4WD wallpaper backgrounds for your computer desktop (4x4) (off-road)

If you are an off-road enthusiast, you will love the new range of off-road action wallpapers for your computer at http://www.4wd1.com/wallpapers.htm

Once you are there, select the wallpaper size you desire which will open the image in a new window. These quality units are ‘priced right’ and offer, at no extra cost, a wireless remote controller, a safety blanket and a 3-Year warranty.

Incredibly, the 9500lb is just $799 and the beefier 12000lb model is just $899. So, if you have been thinking about adding some insurance to the front of your 4WD, now is the time to act. Plus, we will add more icing to the cake by offering free delivery, by insured road freight, to anywhere in Australia.

Click here to buy online.

Crazy Jeep XJ Cherokee off-road jumping

Crazy Jeep XJ Cherokee

When you watch the antics of some idiots, it’s easy to understand why 4WD owners get a bad rap from some sections of media. So here are the facts:

MQ Patrols have round headlights are were build between 6/1980 and 10/1983.

MK Patrols have square headlights are were build between 11/1983 and 12/1987.

Why does this matter? When it comes to the fitment of aftermarket suspension, the design of the front shackles and front spring eyes, differs between the two models. Most suspension companies consolidate the application, only making the front leafs for the later model MK. If you own an MQ, and you buy a suspension kit, you get the springs for the later MK, supplied together with the matching front shackles and bushes from the MK model, in which then all is good.

What is different about the front shackles and bushes between the two models? The earlier MQ has shackles with straight-wall side-plates. Instead of a tradional rubber or urethane bushes, they use a special metal or brass type busing.

On the MK Patrol, the front shackle side-plates are stepped at the bottom (bowed out), basically like an upside-down y-shape. The bush on the top shackle pin is a metal type, and the bush at the bottom of the shackle (that sits in the spring eye) is a rubber or urethane type.

With the vintage of these Patrols, and the potential for chops and changes to the front end by (a) the fitment of a different grille and headlight kit (say after a smash or panel-beating job) and (b) the possibility of the suspension being previously modified or (c) an MQ/MK aftermarket suspension kit - how can you be sure what to order when it comes to suspension parts (replacement type or otherwise?)

Remember:

MQ was build 6/1980-10/1983

MK was build 11/-1983-12/1987

AND - CHECK THE FRONT SHACKLE DESIGN.

MQ has straight-wall side-plates

MK has stepped or bowed side-plates

If you are purchasing a new suspension kit, make sure the shackles will match the new springs.

If you are ordering new bushes, or new shackles for your earlier MQ Patrol, double-check the front shackle design so you know whether to order original MQ ones or the later MK type.

Check out our MQ MK Patrol suspension products here.

WARN TYRE AIR COMPRESSOR PUMP VTC TIRE

Our first stock of Warn Air-Power VTC compressors has just arrived, and our initial testing confirms that the performance is equal to the claims of Warn in USA.

At 0 PSI the compressor will pump 566 l/min. At 90 PSI it will still punch out 226 l/min.
These figures put every other 12v portable compressor to shame. Even the ‘High- Volume’ models marketed by ARB can only manage 75 l/min at 0 PSI.

Hooked up to one of our Jeep Wranglers, the VTC made very short work of getting a big 33-inch Goodyear MTR up from dead flat to 30 PSI. In a more likely scenario, the Warn was able to inflate the 33 from an aired-down 15 PSI to 30 PSI in just 50 seconds!

In addition to tyre inflation, the Warn VTC, with its high-horsepower fan-cooled motor, intercooler, and integrated 3.78 litre air reservoir, can be used to power air tools, pump up Zodiac-sized rubber boats, and just about anything else that needs plenty of air.
Here is how we would describe the new product:

Power = HUGE

Performance = HEAPS

Motor = COOL

Reservoir = MASSIVE

Capability = AMAZING

Design = LOOKS LIKE A V8

Quality= IT'S A WARN

At $1095, (plus the hose/accessory kit if needed), the VTC is many times the price of a shopping-centre special. But it’s a classic example of “you only get what you pay for’. If you need a high-performance, top-quality, portable compressor - that will keep its cool in serious workouts – the Warn VTC is the one to buy.

Click here to buy online.

Never Too Young | 4wd industry | Kirk Barker

To be a success in the 4WD industry you need to start as early as you can.

This photo of our marketing manager, Kirk Barker, was taken way back in 1976. As you can see, Kirk is really proud of his transport - a new Suzuki LJ50 soft-top.

If you can’t remember the Seventies, here are the facts:

A new Suzuki 4WD had a recommended list price of $2795 plus registration and, in those days, very few dealers asked for ‘delivery fees’. The optional bull bar and side bars added another $150. The LJ50 was ‘powered’ by a 539cc, two-stroke, three-cylinder engine and featured a 4-speed gearbox, deep low-range and a narrow body sitting on a wheelbase identical in length to a wartime Jeep.

Despite predictions by some motoring writers, and many car dealers, that a tiny 4WD with a 2-stroke engine wouldn’t sell in Australia, the LJ50 won plenty of hearts. It served as an el cheapo sports car for young city slickers and an easy-to-manage 4WD for people on the land. Farmers liked the fact that, in low-low, the little Suzy would chug along (on idle) at the speed of a slow walk. This meant they could feed the livestock from a moving vehicle - without needing to be behind the wheel.

In the mid-1970s, just the sales of Suzuki’s first Sydney dealer equaled 2 per cent of the entire Australia 4WD market!

Monster RC Jeep JK Wrangler Unlimited- for big kids too!

Back in stock!
