Malan Breton, fashion designer, brings a story in three chapters for fall winter 2017. The chapters create a story that flows from New York Fashion Week, to London Fashion Week, and concludes in Los Angeles at Style Fashion Week. The collection brings a complete story from the chapters: Everywhere at the End of Time (New York), Living in the Moment in Fear (London), and Seven Deadly Sins (Los Angels).

The New York chapter is Everywhere at the End of Time. This chapter  takes us to the current times in the world now and brings about empowerment. The empowerment of women and those being  poorly treated. The entire show from the dancers, to the opening model, Nykhor Paul bring the story to life.

The runway included celebrities models: Kiera Chaplin (Charlie Chaplin’s granddaughter), Frankie Grande, Consuelo Vanderbilt Costin,  Dylan Grieco, Mason Grammer, and Janine Tugonon. Each is a part of the  weaving of the story about acceptance and hope.

London’s show at Freemasons Hall continues the collections’ story. This chapter is living in the moment of fear and darkness. Taking the color away from you. The loss of color a strong presence on the runway. The opening fabric for this chapter looks similar to a second skin. The music for the runway is Sleepwalk by Santo & Johnny.

Los Angeles story chapter, the Seven Deadly Sins. This runway brings the story back to hope, light, and empowerment with the presence of color. The Phoenix in the triplet chapter story.

The collections’ stories are inspired by the 1930s, the loss of hope and death. The stories draw from Charlie Chaplin‘s 1930 films including City Lights and Modern Times. The collections present the story with perfection in fabrics, treatments, performances, and colors.

The fabrics are Asian inspired. The fabrics are organzas, silk Charmeuse, and recycled piettes. The piettes are created  from recycled cans. Breton uses a company in Twain that cuts, colors, and treats the metal.

Breton says, “I do my best to protect the environment with my designs.” This metallic dress moments and texture are extraordinary. Breton states, “the dress movement comes from the way I weighted and draped the dress. I am so grateful it turned out so well.”

The color in this chapter is green (earth and rebirth), gold (prosperity and richness), and deep blue (continuous flow of life). The floral prints bring a beauty and new beginning to the final chapter of the story.

Breton’s chapters stay true to his aesthetics elegance. The mens silhouettes are very on point. This collection Breton styled and designed himself. His stylist for several season, Montgomery Frazier The Image Guru, said, “we do not put anyone in anything that is ill fitting. If it is ill fitted they do not wear it. The textures and fabrics fit Breton’s catch line ‘wherever you go shine.’ The fabrics are rich, opulent, exquisite tailoring, and he is about the fashion. Being here with Breton is so glamorous at Style Fashion Week with the beautiful outdoor setting and jazz music.”

Breton develops his menswear after his own experience. He states, “when I was a ballet dancer in London and on Broadway every time I lifted my arm up when wearing a suit I would loose part of my sleeve. I knew I had to figure out how to cut a suit so I do not loose part of my sleeve. I trained at Turnbull And Asser, the suit makers for the Prince of Wales. He says, “I incorporate the English tradition I learned there with my own development for the men’s suits.”

The fashion show stayed true to the designers’ aesthetic, while completing the story started in New York. The beauty, tailoring, and signature detailing tell the story of hope, equality, and empowerment. Concluding with the image of renewing and shining wherever you are.

The 89th Oscars® will be one that is in the memories of many for years to come. The glamour of The Academy Awards did not disappoint from the luncheon, Oscars’ Week, red carpet, and Oscar® night.

Preparing for an evening at the Oscars® and the many afterparties is a process. This begins months in advance with stylist preparing the look for their clients. They look through the fashion and designers assisting with perfect look.

Viola Davis, Oscar winner for Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role, at the Oscars® states, “the art of acting best, The stories of the people who dreamed big and never saw those dreams to fruition. People who fell in love and lost.” We watch the beauty of art, fashion, and talent on this night. The night starts with the red carpet where film, fashion, and friends meet.

The International Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presents film category (Documentary, Animated, Shorts, and Foreign Films) symposiums the week leading up to the Oscar ceremony. These discussions provide insight to the directors thoughts on the Oscar nominated films.

Gathering Saturday to attend the evening Nominees Symposium we found ourselves surrounded by many who attend every year. One family that have attended for 24 years, they did miss the first symposium.

Sitting in the theatre the feeling of be in a location where you are surrounded by a white screen. Soon you are filled with the sound of people’s stories and lives. Taking in all the emotions that the directors have developed. It is a true honor to be where in a location where many great films are screened.

This is the 60th year for the Foreign Film category, La Strada states It took The Academy 27 years to realize that not all great film making is American. Mark Johnson, Academy governor representing the Producers Branch and the chair of the Foreign Language Film Award Executive Committee, stated, “there is a depth in this category, foreign films, they are becoming more accessible. It is not necessary to make an American film.” This year the Academy nominated  5 films from 85 submitted foreign films. The are Tanna, Land Of Mine, Tori Erdmann, The Salesman, and A Man Called Ove.

A Man Called Ove brings the sense of losing a lifelong partner to reality. This may be something many will experience in their lifetime, but not understand until that time. Hannes Holm, The Director,  talks about taking a novel to film he says, “He felt like a thief taking the book story to film. The version is his not the author’s version of the book. Frederick Morheden, the novelist, told him yes!”

The story is of a husband losing his wife. The struggle with disorder and absence of her presence he becomes desperate with the struggle. He turns to enforcing association rules and gives up on life. He develops a  most unlikely relationship.

Holm’s discussed the film with us after the symposium. He feels that each time the movie is different. He believes that he is only fifty percent of a film. The audience is the other fifty percent. He was honored to be in the theatre where some of the worlds greatest films are screened.

Tanna, a south Pacific island, is a story about the Yakel Tribe. The love interest of Wawa may change the tribes world for generations to come. The film is casted by the tribe leaders. This is presented in their native language. Martin Butler and Bentley Dean, film directors, state, “this was a collaboration film.” JJ acted as the language and cultural interpreter for the film.

This film did present many hurdles. The island has no electricity. The filming and editing was done with solar power. Casting was done by tribal leaders. They did have a few issues the almost imploded the film. The tribe members had never seen a film. The crew created a natural warm. environment for a cast that did not even have a sense of film making to be comfortable and present their best acting. They filmed a lot to ensure a good presence. The story had no written script. The story is a collaborated dialog based on each days shooting best and important each day. There were no rehearsals.

The world primer was with tribe. The chief said, “this is our Movie.” This film’s awards also include: Awards: AACTA Award for Best Original Music Score, Special Mention for Feature-length Fiction Film Nominations: AACTA Award for Best Direction. You can view this film on Amazon.

Land Of Mine, Under Sandet original title, is based on actual events after World War II German prisoners of war. They are ordered to clear over 2 million land mines on the Denmark shoreline.

Director, Martin Zandvloet, this film is about how we view human beings. We need to be more aware of viewing human being’s as individuals. Grateful to the editor for his insightful talent. bricklayer he finds walking on set with a cup of coffee is the best job.

This film has been awarded TIFF in 2015 and it won in the categories of Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, while also achieving a win for Best Danish Film at the Bodil Award plus more. You can view this film here iTunes, GooglePlay, MicroSoft, & Via Play.

Toni Erdmannthe, a film about a jokester father and his very busy CEO daughter. He hires someone to play his daughter and wonders who is going to pay the bill.

The film has received criticism regarding the length. Director, Maren Ade, states, “Took notes after premiere and was afraid to make those changes. She stewed a few days but left it.” The comedy is character driven. The play with the dentures developed from a set that was a gift while the director was a waitress.

The Salesman is about a couple begins performing Death of A Salesman their relationship begins to change. Asghar Farhadi, from Iran, was not in attendance at the symposium. He made a choice to stay away after the recent ban by the US President put in place a travel ban. He did send a message that he was honored to be nominated and had a lot of respect for the Academy. All directors present signed a letter in solidarity with Farhadi.

We had the honor of meeting actor Brian Avery after the event. He is thrilled for Oscars week. He found the films to be inspirational in talent and film. You can learn more about Avery’s acting career here.
