Google Pays $9 Billion to Stay the Default iPhone Search Engine

Google is the default iPhone search engine in the Safari web browser, but not because Apple thinks it’s the best option. No, Google will pay $9 billion this year for the privilege, according to an analyst’s estimate.

And the amount could be much higher next year.

The estimate comes from Rod Hall at Goldman Sachs. “We believe this revenue is charged ratably based on the number of searches that users on Apple’s platform originate from Siri or within the Safari browser,” Hall told investors in a note this morning,

Hall went on to say that Google’s payment to Apple next year could be as much as $12 billion.

Of course, it’s possible the Goldman Sachs analyst’s estimate is off. Last year, a Bernstein analyst pegged the number at $3 billion. Back in 2013, the annual payment was $1 billion.

About $10 per iPhone user

As of last year, there were about 715 million iPhones in use, according to BMO Capital Markets. And that total has surely grown in the last 18 months. If that figure, and Hall’s estimate of annual payments, are both correct it means Google is paying Apple approximately $10 a year for every iPhone user.

Anyone who’d prefer to not use Google as the default search engine on their iPhone can easily change this. Just go to the Settings app and scroll down to Safari. Near the top is Search Engine. Tap on that, then select from Google, Yahoo, Bing, or DuckDuckGo.

Apple’s iOS 12.0.1 Update Fixes Slow Reception, Charging Issues on iPhone XS

Apple has issued an update to iOS 12, which fixes several bugs that have plagued iPhone XS and XS Max users since the phones were released. The iOS 12.0.1 update is available to download now in 3uTools.

The update should fix one of the biggest issues on the iPhone XS and XS Max: users reported poor Wi-Fi reception compared to their previous iPhone X devices when used in their homes, but it doesn’t address the separate LTE issues. It also resolves the widespread issue of iPhone XS devices requiring to be unlocked before recognizing the Lightning cable charger. There’s also a slightly lesser-known issue with the iPad keyboard that’s being fixed. You can see the full release notes for the software update below.

Like clockwork, every new iPhone release is accompanied by some sort of scandal that is often exaggerated for dramatic effect, and in some instances, seemingly made up out of thin air. There was, of course, the bendgate saga that accompanied the iPhone 6, and who could forget the downright comical his state that came about in the wake of the iPhone 7 release. Arguably, the silliest ‘-gate’ controversy we’ve seen with Apple happened just recently with beautygate.

Amid complaints that selfies on the iPhone XS look different than they do on the iPhone X — which is to say they look softer — YouTuber Jonathan Morrison recently posted a series of selfies on social media which he claimed were taken with a Google Pixel 2. In reality, the photos were taken with the iPhone XS. Predictably, there were no shortage of comments from fooled commenters thrashing photos taken from what they were led to believe was an iPhone.

A few of the more noteworthy comments include: “could easily get mistaken for a DSLR”, “best portrait mode yet”, and “I have an iPhone XS Max and what Google is doing software wise is witchcraft. that pic is so good lol.”

Morrison also put out a YouTube video detailing his little photo prank along with some technical explanations as to why photo quality on the iPhone XS trumps the iPhone X, the whole saga surrounding beautygate notwithstanding.

All in all, the ongoing debate between photo quality on the iPhone and the Google Pixel 2 is arguably pointless. The quality of photos we can take today compared to what was possible even a few years ago is absolutely insane. Suffice it to say, any premium smartphone you buy today will take absolutely stunning photos. And sure, camera enthusiasts might debate the pros and cons amongst different smartphones for hours on end, but for the average buyer, the debate is simply not worth having.

Fortnite on iOS Hits $300 Million Revenue in 200 Days

The iOS version of Fortnite has been a big hit, with the mobile battle royale game earning $300 million in 200 days, according to market analyst Sensor Tower since its launch on Apple smartphones and tablets March 15.

Fortnite is also available on the three major home gaming consoles (the PlayStation 4, the Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch) and PC, and the free-to-play battle royale mode has turned the game into a global sensation. Its season pass model, which has players spend real money on a progression system that unlocks more cosmetic items as they play, has helped Fortnite become an earnings machine. Season 6 launched on September 27, and the iOS version grossed $20 million alone in the week after its launch.

The roadmap here is clear: Make a game that grabs players and put it on every device that can run it. But while that may sound simple, Fortnite’s success stands out because it’s really the first video game to have accomplished this, with a nod maybe to Tetris.

As a comparison, famous mobile hit Clash Royale earned $228 million in its first 200 days on iOS. And that figure excludes revenues from China (Fortnite iOS is not available in China).

About 65 percent of that $300 million comes from U.S. Meanwhile, the Android version of Fortnite, which has only been out since August 9, has earned over $60 million.

Fortnite iOS is also tracking ahead of PUBG Mobile. PUBG is the next most-popular battle royale game. Its iOS version has earned $47 million since launching on March 19.

A12 Bionic Chip Makes iPhone XS Nearly as Fast as High-end Desktop

Apple may have seriously undersold the processing power of the iPhone XS.

After deep diving into the new A12 chip, which is the world’s first 7nm manufactured processor, Anandtech found that the CPU features some big improvements that make it perform way better than just the 15% boost Apple is advertising. It’s nearly as good as a desktop CPU.

Anandtech found that Apple did a total revamp on the neural accelerator. The cache feature hasn’t seen changes this big since the A7 processor. Big changes were also made to the CPU core and memory compression on the GPU.

“A lot of workloads will be seeing performance improvements I estimate to be around 40%, with even greater improvements in some corner-cases,” writes the site. “Apple’s CPU have gotten so performant now, that we’re just margins off the best desktop CPUs; it will be interesting to see how the coming years evolve, and what this means for Apple’s non-mobile products.”

Different benchmark testings have shown the A12 chip performing between 24% and 28% better than the A11 chip on average.

It could be only a few years before Apple’s custom silicon start to outperform the fastest desktop CPUs in some areas.

Luca Todesco Successfully Jailbreaks iPhone XS Max Running iOS 12

Italian developer and renowned jailbreaker Luca Todesco is back with some news that will delight the jailbreak community. The enigmatic and often abrasive developer has once again taken to Twitter to confirm that he has successfully jailbroken his new iPhone XS Max hardware running iOS 12.

In terms of actually jailbreaking iOS 12, Todesco is a little way behind the China-based Pangu Team which confirmed back in September that it had managed to successfully jailbreak iOS 12running on Apple’s iPhone XS.

Todesco had also confirmed that his iOS 12 beta hack was still relevant in the production release of iOS 12 but was waiting on getting his hands on iPhone XS Max to validate whether or not there were any hardware concerns or restrictions in place that would thwart his attempts. We now have that confirmation:

The subsequent replies to the tweet show confirmation from Todesco that he has managed to successfully jailbreak the iPhone XS Max and that he has restored the device back to running stock iOS firmware and is currently using the hardware as his main device. As expected, the Italian was also pushed by his followers on whether or not a jailbreak would be released into the community to support Apple’s latest hardware and firmware combinations but there was no reply forthcoming to either confirm or deny whether or not that would happen.

As we know, Todesco was the developer responsible for the Yalu and Yalu102 jailbreaks and has provided a lot of value to the community outside of those releases. With that said, whether or not he will pick up where Yalu left off and once again contribute to the community in the form of an iOS 12 jailbreak is entirely up for debate.

One thing is for sure; there is a lot of attention being paid to Apple’s iOS 12 platform and definitely enough interest to suggest that we will be able to welcome a jailbreak into the world sooner rather than later.

The Asus ROG Phone currently isn't available on all markets and even the US has to wait until October 18 for its release but that doesn't mean we can't bask in the glory of the wallpapers, live wallpapers and themes that the gaming handset has to offer. And interestingly enough, not all wallpapers are tacky, which is rather surprising for images that ship with a gaming phone.

Counterclockwise: Oppo's short history of making phones is filled with innovation

Oppo began life in 2004 and in the early days it made its name by selling high-quality Blu-ray players, amplifiers and headphones. Its entry into the phone business came in 2012, quite late in the game. Still, the company grew quickly, becoming China's top smartphone brand in Q2 2016 (a position it since ceded to Huawei, though parent company BKK is still on top cumulatively).

Oppo's short history is filled with many firsts in mobile photography.

The Oppo U705T Ulike 2 claims to be the first phone with a built-in beautification feature for selfies, which was used with the 5MP front camera. A dubious honor, if you ask us, but there it is.

The Oppo Find 5 was among the pioneers of 1080p screens. It was unveiled in December of 2012 and narrowly missed being first (the HTC Droid DNA snagged that title). Still, 1080p was a resolution for TVs, it seemed ridiculous at the time. Not to worry, the Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset (Snapdragon 600 in China) chipset had plenty of power to drive the display.

Oppo got the win in the next round - the Find 7 was the first phone with a QHD screen. Manufactured by JDI, the 5.5" panel had an incredible for the time pixel density of 538ppi.

There was a 1080p version dubbed Find 7a too. The OnePlus One was based on this hardware, no surprise as the co-founder and CEO of OnePlus spent 15 years at Oppo as an engineer. He got his start in the company's Blu-ray division. More on Pete Lau in a moment.

The Ultra-HD feature was an early example of multi-frame processing - it snapped ten 13MP photos and processed the information into a 50MP shot. Check out these samples from our review. Not quite as good as the 38MP shots from a Lumia 1020, but still better than a straight upscale.

The more impressive Find 7 feature was VOOC charging. It transfers an impressive 20W of power at a low 5V. Most other fast charging technologies work at higher voltage, the downside of which is heat. VOOC is one of the fastest ways to charge your phone to this day and it keeps the phone cool.

OnePlus once again has Oppo to thank for one of its best features, Dash Charge is essentially a rebranded VOOC. The next generation tech, called Super VOOC, is available on the Oppo R17 Pro and some versions of the Find X. They charge at an insane 50W!

Eventually Mr. Lau rose to the position of Vice President at Oppo and was instrumental in developing the Oppo N1. This was the first phone to have official support for CyanogenMod - something that he would carry over to OnePlus (there's some sordid history there, but that's for another time). Note that the phone was also available with Color OS.

The Oppo N1 is also remembered for its rotating camera - a 1/3.06" 13MP sensor behind a bright f/2.0 lens. It was an impressive main camera for the time, but when you rotate it 180°, it turned into the best selfie camera in the world.

There was an invisible touch-sensitive area on the back, the O-Touch pad. It was used for scrolling mostly, but a double tap could launch the camera (and then serve as a shutter key). It's a shame Oppo didn't follow up on this, it was great for one-handed use and we think it's much more versatile than HTC's squeeze function (used in Google's Pixels as well).

You had to turn the camera manually, though. The Oppo N3 fixed that by adding a motor to do it automatically. This feature was also used to shoot a panorama - you held the phone still, the motor would sweep the camera for you (at a constant pace for better results).

The N3 was Oppo's first phone to feature a fingerprint reader. It was placed on the back, where the O-Touch pad used to be on the N1. It still supported swiping, which could be used to rotate the camera.

In 2016 Oppo turned to Sony to design the IMX398 image sensor, which was first used on the Oppo R9s and Oppo R9s Plus. Details on the sensor's special autofocus system are a bit murky - it's not Dual Pixel AF, but Oppo does claim it is superior to regular Phase Detection AF. This sensor was also used by OnePlus, most recently on the 5T.

The Oppo F3 Plus was the company's first phone with a dual camera - the selfie camera, specifically. The self-styled "selfie expert" naturally featured Beauty mode like the Ulike 2 did a few years before it. A smaller version of the phone, Oppo F3, was unveiled a couple of months later.

Soon after the Oppo R11 and Oppo R11 Plus applied the dual camera formula to the back (based on the IMX398 sensor from the R9s along with an IMX376 for the tele lens). While it was a single shooter, the 20MP selfie camera proved quite capable as well.

Those are the highlights of Oppo's past phones, a short but sweet story. The company's most recent phones have the same focus on screen and camera features. They've abandoned QHD resolutions, but handsets like the Oppo R17 Pro are leading the way to a future with in-display fingerprint readers and less obtrusive notches. This phone also experiments with a 3D ToF sensor, we'll see how that goes.

If you scoffed at the mention of a notch above, the Find X offers an alternative path - a pop-up camera powered by a motor. The experience from the N3 must have been of great help when designing this phone. The Find X also has a 3D sensor (using different tech, structured light), for 3D face scanning as an alternative to fingerprint readers.

That's the Oppo way - the company is not afraid to experiment with new features and it has consistently been one of the most innovative smartphone companies and has scored many "firsts" over the last 6 years.

Weekly poll results: Realme 2 Pro is a winner

The Realme 2 Pro scored high in last week’s poll. And how could it not when it undercuts even traditional “value for money” champs like Xioami’s Redmi Note series?

There were some concerns in the comments. Understandably, not everyone is a fan of the microUSB port. And people do wish for a larger battery (though, 3,500mAh is plenty, just ask LG or Apple).

Another issue that came up frequently is that the Snapdragon 660 chipset is underclocked. The big Kryo 260 Gold cores certainly are, they run at 2.0GHz instead of the usual 2.2GHz. That still gives them a 0.2GHz lead on the Snapdragon 636 cores.

And do keep in mind that these are the maximum clocks, which the CPU can rarely sustain, anyway. Looking at the benchmarks, the Realme 2 Pro loses the single-core race to the Xiaomi Mi A2 (S660), but actually beats it in the multi-core test. Also, the GPU clocks are untouched and that Adreno 512 is a great performer in the mid-range.

Speaking of the Mi A2, an Android One phone, there was a division over Color OS. Some say it works quite well, others wish for pure Android. Unfortunately, there’s not much to do here - of the BKK group only OnePlus sells (mostly) unmodded Android and they don’t bother with the mid-range (1+X=what?).

Next Tuesday the Realme 2 Pro, the Realme 2 and (perhaps) the Realme C1 will launch in Indonesia – only the brand’s second market. But with such positive attention, the Pro model is sure to make for a successful launch.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro in for review

Just over half a year ago, Xiaomi released its budget big-screen solution, the Redmi Note 5 Pro and just last month, the Redmi Note 6 Pro came to be. At first glance, the newer phone appears to be a minor hardware refresh and yet, we find some big improvements in areas in which the Redmi Note 5 Pro lacked.

If you don't take the notch into account, the device offers more usable screen space than the last generation and also has better screen-to-body ratio. The side bezels and the chin have shrunk, screen size has grown - from 5.99" to 6.26" and it's now taller as well - from 18:9 to 19:9 aspect ratio. Still, the display has a 1080 x 2280 pixel resolution and an IPS LCD panel. We'll know how it performs once it has been through our test gauntlet.

The chipset is the same - Snapdragon 636 but it's now offered with more memory options - 4 or 6GB of RAM paired with 64GB of storage while 3GB RAM version comes with 32GB of internal storage. The support for microSD card is here to stay but you still have to give up on the second SIM slot.

Another big improvement is the camera, or at least on paper. The notch on the front accommodates two sensors instead of one - 20MP main one with f/2.0 aperture and a 2MP camera for depth sensing. On the back, the old 12MP lens has been replaced with one that has a wider f/1.9 aperture that would surely help with low-light photography.

The Redmi Note 6 Pro has the same 4,000 mAh battery supporting Quick Charge 2.0 charging speeds. The system runs on Android 8.1 Oreo, which is a tad better than the Android 7.1 Nougat-running Redmi Note 5 Pro.

And as for the design, it retains the aluminum unibody construction and you can easily mistake it for the previous generation but the notch on the front gives it away.
